Abstract:Recently, heterogeneous single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted enormous attention in electrochemical applications owing to their advantages of high metal utilization, well-defined active sites, tunable selectivity, and excellent activity. To avoid the aggregation of atomically dispersed metal sites, an appropriate support has to be adopted to reduce the surface free energy of catalysts. Graphene with a high surface area, outstanding conductivity, and unique electronic properties has generally been utilized as the substrate for SACs. Moreover, the correlations between metal–support interactions and the electrocatalytic performance at the atomic scale can be studied on graphene-supported single-atom catalyst (G-SAC) nanoplatforms. In this review, we start from an overview of the synthetic methods for G-SACs. Subsequently, several advanced and effective characterization techniques are discussed. Then, we present a comprehensive summary of recent progress in G-SACs for a variety of electrochemical applications. Finally, we present challenges for and an outlook on the development of G-SACs with outstanding catalytic activity, stability, and selectivity.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Sustainable electrochemical energy conversion is considered as a promising solution to energy crises and environmental issues. Owing to their maximized utilization efficiency and excellent catalytic performance, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have obtained tremendous attention in the field of electrochemical energy conversion. In the last few years, graphene oxide (GO) has been considered to be a promising precursor for fabricating graphene-supported SACs due to its advantageous features such as large surface area, high density of intrinsic defects, and scalability. In this review, the recent advances in the preparation of graphene oxide-derived single-atom catalysts (GO-SACs) and their diverse electrochemical applications are summarized. Firstly, the synthetic strategies of GO-SACs are discussed with focuses on the advantages and shortages of each method. Subsequently, the electrochemical applications of GO-SACs in various energy conversion processes, including the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), are discussed in detail. Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have the advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, which show promising application potentials in many renewable energy-conversion technologies and critical industrial processes. In particular, carbon-supported SACs (CS-SACs) are of great interest because of their maximal atom utilization (∼100%), unique physicochemical structure, and beneficial synergistic effects between active catalytic sites and carbon substrates. In this review, we offer a critical overview of the unique advantages of CS-SACs related to their material designs, catalytic activities, and potential application areas. The state-of-the-art design and synthesis of CS-SACs are described under the framework of bottom-up and top-down approaches. We also comprehensively summarize recent advances in developing CS-SACs for important electrochemical reactions, i.e., oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, serving as bi-/multi-functional electrocatalysts, and usages in supercapacitors and batteries. Lastly, the critical challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field are highlighted.

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY) is regarded as an exceptional candidate to meet the growing demand in many fields due to its rich chemical bonds, highly π‐conjugated structure, uniformly distributed pores, large surface area, and high inhomogeneity of charge distribution. The extensive research efforts bring about a rapid expansion of GDY with a variety of functionalities, which significantly enhance performance including photocatalysis, energy, biomedicine, etc. In this review, the synthetic strategies (in situ and ex situ approaches) that are designed to rationally functionalize GDY, including optimizing their nanostructures by surface/interface engineering with dopants or functional groups (heteroatoms/small molecules/macromolecules), and building up hierarchical GDY‐based heterostructures are highlighted. Theoretical calculations on the structural evolution and electronic characteristics after the functionalization of GDY are briefly discussed. With elaborate functionalization and rational structure engineering, functional GDY applied in a variety of emerging applications (e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, energy storage and conversion, nanophotonics, sensors, biomedical applications, etc.) are comprehensively discussed. Finally, challenges and prospects concerning the future development of GDY‐based nanoarchitectures are also presented.

Abstract:Graphyne (GY) supported single‐atom catalysts (SACs) for water‐splitting and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) exhibit remarkable catalytic performance with excellent atomic utilization efficiency. Co1/GY exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for metal‐air batteries as well as water splitting based on first‐principle computational modelling. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have received significant interest for optimizing metal atom utilization and superior catalytic performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, we investigate a range of single‐transition metal (STM1 = Sc1, Ti1, V1, Cr1, Mn1, Fe1, Co1, Ni1, Cu1, Zr1, Nb1, Mo1, Ru1, Rh1, Pd1, Ag1, W1, Re1, Os1, Ir1, Pt1, and Au1) atoms supported on graphyne (GY) surface for HER/OER and ORR using first‐principle calculations. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and phonon dispersion spectra reveal the dynamic and thermal stabilities of the GY surface. The exceptional stability of all supported STM1 atoms within the H1 cavity of the GY surface exists in an isolated form, facilitating the uniform distribution and proper arrangement of single atoms on GY. In particular, Sc1, Co1, Fe1, and Au1/GY demonstrate promising catalytic efficiency in the HER due to idealistic ΔGH* values via the Volmer‐Heyrovsky pathway. Notably, Sc1 and Au1/GY exhibit superior HER catalytic activity compared to other studied catalysts. Co1/GY catalyst exhibits higher selectivity and activity for the OER, with an overpotential (0.46 V) comparable to MoC2, IrO2, and RuO2. Also, Rh1 and Co1/GY SACs exhibited promising electrocatalysts for the ORR, with an overpotential of 0.36 and 0.46 V, respectively. Therefore, Co1/GY is a versatile electrocatalyst for metal‐air batteries and water‐splitting. This study further incorporates computational analysis of the kinetic potential energy barriers of Co1 and Rh1 in the OER and ORR. A strong correlation is found between the estimated kinetic activation barriers for the thermodynamic outcomes and all proton‐coupled electron transfer steps. We establish a relation for the Gibbs free energy of intermediates to understand the mechanism of SACs supported on STM1/GY and introduce a key descriptor. This study highlights GY as a favorable single‐atom support for designing highly active and cost‐effective versatile electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:Photoelectrocatalysis is a sustainable process that plays a central role in clean energy production and pollution removal. Due to the constraints of current photoelectrocatalysts such as instability and scarcity, scientists have resorted to carbon nanomaterials that are more stable and abundant. It has been found that γ-graphdiyne (GDY), the most stable carbon phase among graphynes that contains a diacetylene bond, has some striking properties such as well-ordered pores, non-uniform electronic structure, easily tunable bandgap and excellent photoelectric performance. It has become a new “star” as a highly active photoelectrocatalyst. Its properties, synthesis strategies and photoelectrocatalytic applications are reviewed. Five reaction systems are summarized based on the phase state of the precursors and catalysts, which include liquid-solid, liquid-liquid, gas-liquid, gas-solid, and solid-gas systems. The roles GDY play in photoelectrocatalysis itself, or as a support for single atom catalytic species are discussed. Problems for current research work are discussed and future research trends are proposed.

Abstract:Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) are a popular area of research for clean energy conversion owing to their cost‐effectiveness and excellent performance. The support plays a vital role in uniformly stabilizing and dispersing the single atoms. Although easily accessible carbon (C) is commonly selected as a support for SACs, its electrochemical properties, particularly stability, usually limits its application. Recently, non‐C materials with flexible physicochemical properties and unique metal–support interactions have attracted increasing attention for loading isolated metal atoms, showing promise for promoting catalytic performance. Therefore, in this review, a comprehensive summary of current research developments in non‐C‐supported SACs for green energy conversion is provided. The review begins with a brief introduction of the four types of non‐C‐supported SACs based on the support used. Thereafter, a systemic summary of synthesis methods for non‐C‐supported SACs analyzing their advantages and disadvantages is provided. The interactions between single metal atoms and non‐C supports are discussed, followed by their applications in green energy conversion. Then, the significance of adopting a variety of in situ/operando approaches is emphasized to gain insight into both the synthesis and reaction mechanisms, which have been successfully deployed for non‐C‐supported SACs. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives on designing promising non‐C‐supported SACs are discussed. A promising electrocatalyst is critical for solving issues of resource scarcity and environment pollution. This review summarizes the latest research progress in non‐carbon‐supported single‐atom catalysts for green energy conversion, including support species, synthesis methods, metal–support interactions, and in situ/operando characterizations. By providing a systematic overview, this review can facilitate the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts and benefit researchers in the field.

Abstract:Graphdiyne(GDY), which is composed of sp2-/sp-hybridized carbon atoms, has attracted increasing attention. In the structure of GDY, the existence of large triangular-like pores, well dispersed electron-rich cavities as well as a large π-conjugated structure endows GDY with a natural bandgap, fast electron/ion transport, and tunable electronic properties. These unique features make GDY competitive in areas of gas separation and capture, electronics, detectors, catalysts, biomedicine and therapy, and energy-related fields. Benefiting from the facile synthesis method, various GDY structures and GDY-based composites have been successfully prepared and show great potential in the practical application of energy storage and catalysis areas. Here, this review aims at providing a timely and comprehensive update on the preparation and application of GDY materials. The current development of GDY materials in various electrochemical fields especially in energy conversion, energy storage, and catalysis is mainly summarized. Moreover, the potential development prospects are also discussed.

Abstract:Research on heterogeneous single-atom catalysts (SACs) has become an emerging frontier in catalysis science because of their advantages in high utilization of noble metals, precisely identified active sites, high selectivity, and tunable activity. Graphene, as a one-atom-thick two-dimensional carbon material with unique structural and electronic properties, has been reported to be a superb support for SACs. Herein, we provide an overview of recent progress in investigations of graphene-based SACs. Among the large number of publications, we will selectively focus on the stability of metal single-atoms (SAs) anchored on different sites of graphene support and the catalytic performances of graphene-based SACs for different chemical reactions, including thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis. We will summarize the fundamental understandings on the electronic structures and their intrinsic connection with catalytic properties of graphene-based SACs, and also provide a brief perspective on the future design of efficient SACs with graphene and graphene-like materials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

A Bionic Strategy for Addressing Scale-Span Issues in All-Carbon Electrocatalytic Systems

Abstract:We report the rational design of an all-carbon and all-scale electrocatalytic system with ultrahigh electrocatalytic activity outperforming Pt-based electrodes by quantum mechanics calculations and bionics. According to the calculations, N and O co-doped graphene quantum dots (N-O-GQDs) could offer an ultrahigh atomic ratio of high-activity edge defects (N-C+-O, O-C+, and N-C+) owing to the most marked edge effect and co-doping effect. To fully activate these atomic-scale defects for catalyzing the two-electron triiodide reduction applied in dye-sensitized solar cells, a mesh-capillary carbon matrix composed of carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes was constructed to well disperse the catalyst and provide fast pathways for both electron transport and electrolyte penetration/diffusion by imitating the sophisticated structure of the blood vessel system. The all-carbon ternary system exhibits high reduction potential (i.e. low overpotential) and low charge-transfer resistance, and delivers high open-circuit voltage of 0.81 V, high short circuit current density of 15.77 mA cm(-2), and high conversion efficiency of 7.68%. Our study helps understand and address general and challenging scale-span issues in electrode reactions for developing more efficient and practical electrocatalytic systems merely by assembling facilely derived carbon materials as the catalyst, matrix or current collector without using other materials. Abstract:The field of small molecule electro-activated conversion is becoming a new star in modern catalytic research toward the carbon-neutral future. The advent of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is expected to greatly accelerate the kinetics of electrocatalytic reactions such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), etc., owing to their maximum atomic efficiency, unique quantized energy level structure and strong interaction between well-defined active sites and supports. In this feature article, our group's proposed synthesis methodology applied in electrocatalysis is mainly summarized. Furthermore, we elaborate on how to achieve the stabilization of single metal atoms against migration and agglomeration during the preparation of SACs. Moreover, the electrochemical applications of SACs with a focus on the above heterogeneous reactions are presented. Finally, the prospects for the development and deficiencies of these SACs for electrocatalytic reactions are discussed.

Abstract:As a burgeoning carbon material, graphdiyne (GDY) with a highly π‐conjugated structure that is composed of sp‐ and sp2‐hybridized carbon atoms, it can be grouped into several forms. Compared to traditional carbon materials, GDY exhibits a unique carbon network and electronic structure, raising the concern of researchers at home and abroad. As a result of its favorable electronic structure and good functionalization capability, GDY can be modified to provide an ideal platform to prepare a highly active catalyst for electrocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, GDY can be synthesized on arbitrary substrates in a three‐dimensional nanosheet array structure, which can provide a large number of channels for the transfer of electrons and a large contact area with the reactant, which is also beneficial for electrocatalytic reactions. This Review focuses on the recent development of GDY for electrocatalysis applications, and elaborates the future prospects of GDY.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer high reactivity and selectivity toward catalytic reaction while maximizing the utilization of active components. Unfortunately, single-atom sites are susceptible to sintering and agglomerating into thermodynamically stable nanoclusters due to their high surface energy. Introducing appropriate supports to optimize the local coordination environment and electronic properties, as well as induce strong metal-support interactions (SMSI), is essential to preventing sintering. Although a range of potential SACs with low-cost supports are emerging as promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis, the real roles and key factors of supports that govern the catalytic properties of these SACs remain ambiguous. Aiming at understanding the bonding between atomic sites and supports and how this relates to the catalytic performance, we herein summarize the recent experimental and computational efforts of SACs toward electrocatalysis. Moreover, the real role of the support in the SACs plays in affecting the electrocatalytic reaction is also emphasized. Furthermore, before ending this review, we have also proposed the prospects and challenges of the advanced SACs for the application in the field of electrocatalytic energy conversion.

Abstract:Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have been demonstrated to show exceptional reactivity and selectivity in catalytic reactions by effectively utilizing metal species, making them a favorable choice among the different active materials for energy conversion. However, SACs are still in the early stage of energy conversion, and problems like agglomeration and low energy conversion efficiency are hampering their practical applications. Substantial researches focus on support modifications, which are vital for SAC reactivity and stability due to the intimate relationship between metal atoms and support. In this review, a category of supports and a variety of surface engineering strategies employed in SA systems are summarized, including surface site engineering (heteroatom doping, vacancy introducing, surface groups grafting, and coordination tunning) and surface structure engineering (size/morphology control, cocatalyst deposition, facet engineering, and crystallinity control). Also, the merits of support surface engineering in single‐atom systems are systematically introduced. Highlights are the comprehensive summary and discussions on the utilization of surface engineered SACs in diversified energy conversion applications including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermocatalysis, and energy conversion devices. At the end of this review, we have discussed the potential and obstacles of using surface engineered SACs in the field of energy conversion. This review aims to guide the rational design and manipulation of SACs for target‐specific applications by capitalizing on the characteristic benefits of support surface engineering. Abstract:Alkyne carbon material is a novel two-dimensional carbon allotrope with good electrical conductivity and high specific surface area. The porous structure composed of sp2- and sp-hybridized carbon promotes charge transfer and ion transport, which endows alkyne carbon material with broad application prospects in the field of energy storage and conversion. Theoretically, gamma-graphyne (gamma-GY) has the highest stability among the gamma-GY-like carbon materials due to its stable conjugated system and unique triangular pore structure, which promotes the ionic intercalation/ de-intercalation process in alkali metal ion batteries. Given its excellent semiconductor properties, gamma-GY is also an ideal candidate for photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution. Besides, the molecular framework and electron configuration of gamma-GY can be regulated by heteroatom doping or rational molecular structural design of organic precursors. This review summarized synthesis methods of.-GY and its applications in lithium ( sodium and potassium) ion batteries, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis, then further proposed the challenges and opportunities in the energy field.

Abstract:Graphene, a one-atom layer of graphite, possesses a unique two-dimensional (2D) structure, high conductivity and charge carrier mobility, huge specific surface area, high transparency and great mechanical strength. Thus, it is expected to be an ideal material for energy storage and conversion. During the past several years, a variety of graphene based materials (GBMs) have been successfully prepared and applied in supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, water splitting, electrocatalysts for fuel cells, and solar cells. In this review, we will summarize the recent advances in the synthesis and applications of GBMs in these energy related systems. The challenges and prospects of graphene based new energy materials are also discussed.

While these SACs must be dispersed on solid substrates, the underlying support is usually limited to carbon materials that have a poor ability to modulate the coordination environment and electronic structures of single atoms, and consequently their catalytic activity toward the SRR is restricted. Here we propose two-dimensional (2D) graphene/electride heterostructures as substrates to enhance the catalytic activities of SACs for Li-S batteries. 2D electrides featuring the anionic electron gas on their surface enable efficient electron transfer to SACs, which alters their electronic structures, resulting in the shifts of the d orbital and Fermi levels. This unique electronic structure decreases the filling of antibonding states such that the bonding with adsorbates at active sites is enhanced. We demonstrate the enhanced catalytic performance of SACs in terms of the Gibbs free energy of SRR and Li 2 S dissociation. In addition, a universal descriptor for the rapid screening of SACs is established by a linear regression fitting method. This work provides a new design strategy to modulate SAC activity through electrides for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The extensive use of single-atom catalysts (SACs) has appeared as a significant area of investigation in contemporary study. The single-atom catalyst, characterized by its maximum atomic proficiency and great discernment of the transition-metal center, has a unique combination of benefits from both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. Consequently, it effectively bridges the gap between these two types of catalysts, leveraging their distinctive features. The utilization of SACs immobilized on graphene substrates has garnered considerable interest, primarily because of their capacity to facilitate selective and efficient photocatalytic processes. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the progress and potential uses of SACs made from graphene in photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction and hydrogen (H2) generation. The focus is on their contribution to converting solar energy into chemical energy. The present study represents the various preparation methods and characterization approaches of graphene-based single-atom photocatalyst This review investigates the detailed mechanisms underlying these photocatalytic processes and discusses recent studies that have demonstrated remarkable H2 production rates through various graphene-based single-atom photocatalysts. Additionally, the pivotal roleof theoretical simulations, likedensity functional theory (DFT), to understand the structural functional relationships of these SACs are discussed. The potential of graphene-based SACs to revolutionize solar-to-chemical energy conversion through photocatalytic CO2 reduction and H2 production is underscored, along with addressing challenges and outlining future directions for this developing area of study. By shedding light on the progress and potential of these catalysts, this review contributes to the collective pursuit of sustainable and efficient energy conversion strategies to mitigate the global climate crisis.
