Abstract:The Department of Biotechnology at Savitribai Phule Pune University organized an International Conference on Biology Beyond Boundaries: Mitochondrial Insights, Computational Breakthroughs, and Clinical Transformations. The symposium provided a highly interactive platform for sharing scientific ideas, cultural enrichment, and collaborations between scientists working across multidisciplinary areas including cell death and mitochondrial biology, computational approaches, and translational research to combat various human diseases. More than 250 delegates including international scientists, junior investigators, and students joined this exciting event. Several sessions were dedicated for junior investigators and graduate students to highlight scientific excellence as well as to gather scientific feedback in advancing their ongoing research. Although promising progress has been made in infectious diseases in India, noncommunicable diseases such as cancer, cardiac, and neurodegenerative diseases are increasing, leading to higher funding in these areas of research. The success of this meeting has provided a platform for future scientific conferences, which will foster collaborations between multidisciplinary areas of biological sciences to prevent and treat various human diseases in India, as well as further showcase the progress in Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology throughout India.

Abstract:The development of molecular marker technology in the 1980s changed the fate of plant breeding and greatly complemented crop improvement. The information generated from molecular markers (QTLs mapping and association mapping) and genome sequencing could construct a foundation for the genetic improvement of complex traits in crops through molecular breeding approaches. This review is intended to be a synopsis and up-to-date coverage of achievements and ongoing molecular plant breeding research in the Indian Council of Agriculture Research-Agricultural Universities (ICAR-AUs) for the improvement of biotic and abiotic stress, post-harvest, and nutritional quality attributes in plants. India's contributions to international crop plant genome sequencing initiatives were also covered in this assessment. The challenge of achieving food security and nutritional quality has prompted ICAR-AUs to step up their molecular plant breeding research in recent years.

Abstract:Biomedical research collaborations are to be contextualized in the larger global health agenda which also opens up new information pathways, expands research networks, and brings additional resources. A qualitative inquiry was employed to understand the perceived benefits and challenges of research collaborations by biomedical scientists from India (Global South [GS] country) and the Global North (GN). In-depth interviews were conducted with 47 biomedical scientists from India and 06 from the GN. The data was analyzed using the grounded theory approach. Complementarity of skills and resources, access to funds, improved quality of work, an opportunity to conduct multi-centric studies, development of collaborative networks, better and larger number of publications, mutual learning, opportunity to work with credible researchers, address common interests, leverage interpersonal and trusted relationships and larger societal good were some of the critical factors for eagerness of participants in joint scientific endeavors. However, the challenging aspects of dissent and disagreements were the power imbalance between the collaborators, the development of a trust deficit, and local administrative issues. The challenges reported in the current publication, also echoed in several previous publications can be surmounted and negotiated amicably when the rules of the game, law of the land, sharing of the credits, and interest of the collaborating parties are addressed and agreed up in a fair and just manner before the start of the collaboration. Overall biomedical partnerships are complex collaborations with its challenges, the processes are dynamic and outcomes are emergent. This requires constant and proactive evolution of the preparation, implementation and sustainability of the collaborative efforts be it national or international.

Developing a faculty support program for fostering enriching undergraduate laboratory experiences under limited resource conditions

Abstract:Meaningful pedagogical reform requires good faculty training and support programs. Such support is particularly valuable when colleges and universities are trying to bring research and inquiry into the laboratory curricula under resource-limited conditions. In this situation, it may help to extend the scope of the faculty support program to include training for practicing experimental techniques, sustainable networking opportunities, and a space to learn about pedagogical reforms. From this perspective, we share our experience about building a faculty development program for public college teachers who teach undergraduate biology in India. Though we designed the program for low-resource settings, the experiments curated could very well represent core biological concepts typically identified by the international community. The activities and overall design of the program can be useful for initiating pedagogical reform in any college/university where the traditional approach to biology laboratory instruction predominates, and high-end research is not easy to access.
50,000 years of Evolutionary History of India: Insights from ∼2,700 Whole Genome Sequences

Abstract:India has been underrepresented in whole genome sequencing studies. We generated 2,762 high coverage genomes from India––including individuals from most geographic regions, speakers of all major languages, and tribal and caste groups––providing a comprehensive survey of genetic variation in India. With these data, we reconstruct the evolutionary history of India through space and time at fine scales. We show that most Indians derive ancestry from three ancestral groups related to ancient Iranian farmers, Eurasian Steppe pastoralists and South Asian hunter-gatherers. We uncover a common source of Iranian-related ancestry from early Neolithic cultures of Central Asia into the ancestors of Ancestral South Indians (ASI), Ancestral North Indians (ANI), Austro-asiatic-related and East Asian-related groups in India. Following these admixtures, India experienced a major demographic shift towards endogamy, resulting in extensive homozygosity and identity-by-descent sharing among individuals. At deep time scales, Indians derive around 1-2% of their ancestry through gene flow from archaic hominins, Neanderthals and Denisovans. By assembling the surviving fragments of archaic ancestry in modern Indians, we recover ∼1.5 Gb (or 50%) of the introgressing Neanderthal and ∼0.6 Gb (or 20%) of the introgressing Denisovan genomes, more than any other previous archaic ancestry study. Moreover, Indians have the largest variation in Neanderthal ancestry, as well as the highest amount of population-specific Neanderthal segments among worldwide groups. Finally, we demonstrate that most of the genetic variation in Indians stems from a single major migration out of Africa that occurred around 50,000 years ago, with minimal contribution from earlier migration waves. Together, these analyses provide a detailed view of the population history of India and underscore the value of expanding genomic surveys to diverse groups outside Europe.

It is the first time that a mainstream biology journal has decided to publish a whole issue on rare genetic disorders. I congratulate the editorial board of the Journal of Biosciences for their timely support to encourage research in this area. I also believe that this issue will increase awareness about rare genetic diseases research and encourage many in India to enter the field.

Abstract:Introduction Despite world-class medical facilities and clinical expertise in India, various challenges have hampered biomedical research, including limited funding, overburdened healthcare professionals, and inadequate research infrastructure. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recognized the need to enhance research capabilities in the medical community and mandated the Basic Course in Biomedical Research (BCBR). This study evaluates the impact of BCBR on medical teachers and postgraduate students across India. Methods A cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted among 245 participants who completed BCBR, out of 1,187 who were sent the questionnaire. A structured questionnaire collected data on demographics, motivations for taking the course, knowledge and skills improvement, and research output. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 29.0 (Released 2022; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Participants included diverse age groups, with motivations ranging from regulatory compliance to a genuine desire for research knowledge. The majority scored over 70% in the course, indicating substantial knowledge improvement. BCBR positively influenced research output with increased research proposal submissions, publications, and improved thesis mentoring. The analysis showed that participants' designations and branches of study significantly affected course performance, while gender did not. The study revealed a strong correlation between pre-course and post-course performance across various research topics. Conclusion BCBR, mandated by the NMC, not only fulfills regulatory requirements but also promotes a research culture in India's medical community.

Abstract:The world's population is rapidly increasing, putting a colossal strain on the world's food supply. Pesticides are one of the most frequent strategies for increasing food production, but their continued usage has some pessimistic consequences for the environment. Over the last two decades, there has been a surge in interest in biopesticides as a prospective replacement. A bibliometric study was conducted from 2002 to 2021 to identify the scientific evolution of biopesticides. In the dimension database, a total of 5680 documents were identified as suitable for this analysis. The documents were analyzed, and nations were ranked based on authors, productivity, article citations, and co-authorship using parameters such as the number of papers, article citations, keywords, source impact, and country of publication. From 2002 to 2021, Pest Management Science and the Journal of Economic Entomology produced the most articles as well as the top contributions in biopesticide publishing by authors Benelli (first) and Tyagi (second). In 2006, Halkier received the highest degree of citation, while Berg received the highest level of citation in 2009. The University of Queensland and the University of Florida were the top two institutes that contributed to the publication of biopesticides.

Abstract:The Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India (CSCMi) is one of 10 International Centers of Excellence in Malaria Research funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2010. The Center combines innovative research with capacity building and technology transfer to undertake studies with clinical and translational impact that will move malaria control in India toward the ultimate goal of malaria elimination/eradication. A key element of each research site in the four states of India (Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, and Meghalaya) has been undertaking community- and clinic-based epidemiology projects to characterize the burden of malaria in the region. Demographic and clinical data and samples collected during these studies have been used in downstream projects on, for example, the widespread use of mosquito repellants, the population genomics of Plasmodium vivax, and the serological responses to P. vivax and Plasmodium falciparum antigens that reflect past or present exposure. A focus has been studying the pathogenesis of severe malaria caused by P. falciparum through magnetic resonance imaging of cerebral malaria patients. Here we provide a snapshot of some of the basic and applied research the CSCMi has undertaken over the past 12 years and indicate the further research and/or clinical and translational impact these studies have had.

Abstract:The last 20 years have been a remarkable era for biology and medicine. One of the most significant achievements has been the sequencing of the first human genomes, which has laid the foundation for profound insights into human genetics, the intricacies of regulation and development, and the forces of evolution. Incredibly, as we look into the future over the next 20 years, we see the very real potential for sequencing more than 1 billion genomes, bringing even deeper insight into human genetics as well as the genetics of millions of other species on the planet. Realizing this great potential for medicine and biology, though, will only be achieved through the integration and development of highly scalable computational and quantitative approaches that can keep pace with the rapid improvements to biotechnology. In this perspective, I aim to chart out these future technologies, anticipate the major themes of research, and call out the challenges ahead. One of the largest shifts will be in the training used to prepare the class of 2035 for their highly interdisciplinary world.

Abstract:Bioinformatics is now a critical skill in many research and commercial environments as biological data are increasing in both size and complexity. South African researchers recognized this need in the mid-1990s and responded by working with the government as well as international bodies to develop initiatives to build bioinformatics capacity in the country. Significant injections of support from these bodies provided a springboard for the establishment of computational biology units at multiple universities throughout the country, which took on teaching, basic research and support roles. Several challenges were encountered, for example with unreliability of funding, lack of skills, and lack of infrastructure. However, the bioinformatics community worked together to overcome these, and South Africa is now arguably the leading country in bioinformatics on the African continent. Here we discuss how the discipline developed in the country, highlighting the challenges, successes, and lessons learnt.

Abstract:As one of the world's mega-biodiverse regions, the Indian subcontinent harbors exceptional biological riches spanning diverse taxa and ecosystems. However, rapid economic growth and associated anthropogenic pressures pose ever-increasing threats to native biota through habitat loss, overexploitation, invasive species, climate change, and pollution. This paper analyzes India's changing biodiversity landscape, evaluates the efficacy of conservation policies, and charts strategic priorities for the future. Spatiotemporal trends for 3563 species across terrestrial, fresh water and marine realms were assessed using IUCN Red List data. We find that birds and mammals show modest improvements recently owing to legal protections and habitat recovery initiatives. However, other less-charismatic taxa exhibit alarming population declines nationwide. Our policy analysis highlights critical gaps in implementation frameworks involving multi-sector coordination, capacity building, benefit sharing, and participatory decision-making. To arrest biodiversity erosion and achieve stated policy targets by 2030, we propose an integrated, evidence-driven strategy prioritizing invasives control, agro-ecological transitions, pollution abatement, ecological connectivity via green-gray infrastructure, and community-based adaptation. Mindful of inherent socio-ecological complexities, our recommendations provide a framework for targeted conservation investments attuned to India's development aspirations.

Abstract:Scientific collaboration at international level has increased manifolds during last two decades. Collaboration is not only associated with higher research productivity but has also been found to be positively correlated with impact. Considering the benefits and advantages of international collaboration for the national science and technology systems of a country, policymakers in different countries have designed programs to promote international collaboration in science. This paper attempts to measure and characterize the international collaboration patterns in Indian scientific research for the last 20 years (2001–2020) using data from WoS. The existing methods from scientometrics and a new formalism of boost in productivity, citations and visibility, is used for the purpose. Analytical results show that India’s international collaboration has grown with a CAGR of 12.27% during this period, rising from 20.73% internationally collaborated papers in 2001 to 32.35% internationally collaborated papers in 2020. USA, Germany, England, and China remain the top collaborating partners in terms of volume of papers, however, the relative intensity of collaboration with South Korea and Saudi Arabia has increased significantly. Among the internationally collaborated papers of India, about 50% papers have an Indian researcher as lead (first) author, and further the internationally collaborated papers of India have more than 50% authors from India. The Indian indigenous scholarly ecosystem is found to be significantly productive, but slight and heavy dependence for impact and visibility, respectively, is found on international collaborations. The probable factors shaping the Indian international collaboration and the major policy implications for India are discussed.
