Abstract:The mechanisms underlying chaotic advection and mixing in inertial flow at Reynolds numbers above the Stokes flow regime are incompletely understood. This paper describes numerical investigations of chaotic advection and mixing for time-periodic inertial flow in a two-dimensional rectangular cavity driven by alternating motion of the upper and lower walls. The effects of inertia are analyzed in terms of the flow topology and tracer dynamics. The periodic unsteady high Reynolds number laminar flow results in the evolution of the Poincare map as the Reynolds number increases. Periodic points shift in position from their original locations in Stokes flow, and the Poincare sections transition from those characteristic of Stokes flow to a different characteristic pattern at higher Reynolds numbers. Tracer motion exhibits increasing degrees of disorder with increasing Reynolds number and decreasing forcing frequency resulting in increased chaotic mixing. The forcing frequency has a much greater impact on chaotic advection and mixing than inertial effects.
Variable-density buoyancy-driven turbulence with asymmetric initial density distribution

Abstract:The effects of different initial density distributions on the evolution of buoyancy-driven homogeneous variable-density turbulence (HVDT) at low (0.05) and high (0.75) Atwood numbers are studied by using high-resolution direct numerical simulations. HVDT aims to mimic the acceleration-driven Rayleigh-Taylor and shock-driven Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities and reveals new physics that arise from variable-density effects on the turbulent mixing. Here, the initial amounts of pure light and pure heavy flows are altered primarily to mimic the variable-density turbulence at the different locations of the Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities' mixing layers where the amounts of the mixing fluids are not equal. It is found that for the low Atwood number cases, the asymmetric initial density distribution has limited effects on both global and local flow evolution for HVDT. However, at high Atwood number, both global flow evolution and the local flow structures are strongly affected by the initial composition ratio. The flow composed of more light fluid reaches higher turbulent levels and the local statistics reach their fully-developed behavior earlier in the time evolution. During the late time decay, where most of the flow is well-mixed, all parameters become independent of the initial composition ratio for both low and high Atwood number cases.

Abstract:In the present study, the effects of density variations on structures developing in an isotropic incompressible turbulent flow are investigated. Statistical analyses are carried out on data sets obtained from direct numerical simulations of forced turbulence. The discretized variable-density incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time advanced with a Fourier-Fourier spectral solver coupled with a semi-implicit second order in time Runge-Kutta scheme. Turbulence is forced using an extension of the Lundgren method to the variable-density equations including mass diffusion effects. Numerical evidence shows that the introduction of a variable-density field into a turbulent field modifies the coherent structures and the energy spectrum in the inertial range. The analysis of probability density functions of velocity gradients and Lagrangian acceleration suggests an increase in time and space intermittency beyond a threshold density ratio associated with the two-fluid mixture. These modifications are not captured by the classical scaling laws of skewness and flatness factors given in the literature for the constant-density flow case. The energy spectra preserve the Kolmogorov slope while exhibiting an energy level alteration within the smallest scales of the inertial range. This region corresponds to the range of modes where the energy levels of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability criterion are the highest, giving some physical arguments that the aforementioned structural modifications may be attributed to Rayleigh-Taylor-like instabilities. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.054604 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:By considering the effect of suspended solid particles in the ordinary equations for two-dimension inviscid incompressible mixing layer, the Rayleigh equation and the modified Rayleigh equation are obtained. And then, by solving the corresponding eigen-value equations with numerical computational method, the relation curves between perturbation frequency and spacial growth rate of the mixing layer for the varying particle loading, ratio of particle velocity to fluid velocity and Stokes number are got. Sever al important conclusions on the effect of suspended solid particles on unstability of the mixing layer are presented in the end by analyzing all the relation curves.

Abstract:With the Eulerian-Lagrangian point-source method, the effects of dispersed particles on turbulent structures and asymmetric properties are systematically investigated in a three-dimensional spatially evolving compressible mixing layer with the convective Mach number up to 1.2. Particles interact with the mixing layer through two-way coupling, and three simulations with different particle diameters are conducted and compared with the particle-free flow. The underlying mechanisms responsible for the mixing layer asymmetry are also revealed through analyzing the self-similar equations of the particle-laden spatially evolving compressible mixing layer. The compressible mixing layer is significantly asymmetric on the high- and low-speed sides. The low-speed layer possesses more vortices and less shocklets compared with the high-speed layer in the fully developed region, and the shear layer center tends to skew toward the low-speed stream, which is due to the streamwise momentum gradient. Small particles augment the mixing layer asymmetry with more vortices and shocklets in the low-speed stream, which is attributed to the small inertia and the larger streamwise velocity of particles than fluid across the mixing layer. However, large particles attenuate the asymmetry of the mixing layer where the vortical structures on the low-speed side are further reduced and the shocklets are barely existent in both the layers, which is ascribed to the large inertia and the stronger effect of particle back-reaction on the low-speed fluid than that on the high-speed fluid.

Abstract:Kelvin-Helmhotz roll up of the 3-D time-developing mixing was simulated numerically. The dye lines or fluid interfaces were presented by computing a passive scalar at high Peclet number. The hydric bubbles were also simulated numerically. To help understanding the visualization results, the behaviour of coherent structures were analyzed. A comparison between vortical structure and passive scalar contours indicates that the wrapping by the vortices largely dominates the evolution of passive scalar.

Abstract:Variable-density mixing in shock bubble interaction, a canonical flow of Richtermyer-Meshkov instability, is studied by the high-resolution simulation. While the dissipation mainly controls the passive scalar mixing rate, an objective definition of variable-density mixing rate characterizing the macroscopic mixing formation is still lacking, and the fundamental behavior of mixing rate evolution is not yet well understood. Here, we first show that the variable-density mixing of shock bubble interaction is distinctly different from the previous observations in the passive scalar mixing. The widely-accepted hyperbolic conservation of the first moment of concentration in the scalar mixing, i.e., the conservation of the mean concentration, is violated in variable-density flows. We further combine the compositional transport equation and the divergence relation for the miscible flows to provide the evidence that the existence of density gradient accelerated mixing rate, decomposed by the accelerated dissipation term and redistributed diffusion term, contributes to the anomalous decrease or increase of the mean concentration depending on Atwood number. Further analyzing a number of simulations for the cylindrical or spherical bubbles under a broad range of shock Mach numbers, Reynolds numbers, and Peclet numbers, the density gradient accelerated mixing rate exhibits weak dependent on Peclet numbers, and identifies an Atwood number range with high mixing rate, which can be theoretically predicted based on the mode of hyperbolic conservation violation behavior.

Multi-scale interactions in turbulent mixed convection drive efficient transport of Lagrangian particles

Abstract:When turbulent convection interacts with a turbulent shear flow, the cores of convective cells become aligned with the mean current, and these cells (which span the height of the domain) may interact with motions closer to the solid boundary. In this work, we use coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian direct numerical simulations of a turbulent channel flow to demonstrate that under conditions of turbulent mixed convection, interactions between motions associated with ejections and low-speed streaks near the solid boundary, and coherent superstructures in the interior of the flow interact and lead to significant vertical transport of strongly settling Lagrangian particles. We show that the primary suspension mechanism is associated with strong ejection events (canonical low-speed streaks and hairpin vortices characterized by $u'<0$ and $w'>0$), whereas secondary suspension is strongly associated with large scale plume structures aligned with the mean shear (characterized by $w'>0$ and $\theta'>0$). This coupling, which is absent in the limiting cases (pure channel flow or free convection) is shown to lead to a sudden increase in the interior concentration profiles as $\mathrm{Ri}_\tau$ increases, resulting in concentrations that are larger by roughly an order of magnitude at the channel midplane.

Abstract:The velocity U and the mixing scalar field Θ of turbulent wake flows developing downstream of a slender splitter plate were studied experimentally for unstratified and strongly stably stratified conditions in a square channel with water as fluid. The experimental program comprises five different Reynolds numbers spanning [Formula: see text]–60 000 for [Formula: see text] (isokinetic conditions) between the two planar, initially separated streams and five relative density stratifications from [Formula: see text] to 10%, since mixing studies for these stratification strengths are rather limited. This full-channel Reynolds number uses the hydraulic diameter [Formula: see text] of the mixing section as the characteristic length scale. These experiments challenge the corresponding numerical calculations based on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes approaches relying on the Boussinesq approximations of the first and second kind. The development of the mixing scalar field Θ was measured by two fundamentally different approaches: laser induced fluorescence (LIF) in the downstream x– y mid-plane and wire-mesh sensors (WMSs) in discrete lateral y– z planes. This allows for a direct comparison of both sensing techniques at locations where both planes intersect. For the unstratified conditions, it is shown that the downstream developing wake velocity deficit decay agrees well with the theoretical approach. The concentration fields based on LIF and WMS profiles of the mean and fluctuating (root mean square, RMS) data confirm self-similarity by introducing a mixing scalar Θ for both techniques. In the approximate limit, it is shown that the mean concentration field can be well described by an error function and the corresponding RMS data by a Gaussian profile in self-similar coordinates. By using the momentum thickness θ m at the splitter plate as the normalization parameter, the downstream developing width of the mixing zone [Formula: see text] becomes independent for [Formula: see text]. The mean and the RMS values of the concentration field Θ for the stably stratified experiments show self-similarity in the core of the concentration field but also a departure from the error function and Gaussian profile in the outer parts. Introducing a local gradient Richardson number Ri g , it is shown that both the growth and growth-suppression of the mixing zone are well described by the Miles–Howard criterion for all the stratified experiments considered, even though this criterion was originally developed for shear layers.

Abstract:We analyze a dataset from a numerically simulated, temporally evolving turbulent wake (Zhou, Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 7, 2022, 104802) that exhibits spontaneous anisotropic layering under strong stratification, alongside significant spatiotemporal variability within the flow. This analysis focuses on the irreversible flux coefficient, , defined as the ratio between turbulent potential and kinetic energy dissipation rates. We find that the volume-averaged initially rises, reaches a plateau between 0.45 and 0.49 when the layering dynamics become dominant, and then decreases as viscosity plays a larger role. These peak values are consistent with those from prior simulations under strongly stratified conditions. Such efficient mixing occurs when the Ozmidov to Thorpe length scale ratio is between 0.37 and 0.52, consistent with numerical and field data reported by Mashayek et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 826, 2017, pp. 522–552). To account for the coexistence of dynamically distinct regions within the flow, we perform conditional sampling of against a locally defined gradient Richardson number, . This reveals a flux-gradient relation between and that remains largely consistent over time. This relation features a large, approximately constant value of for values greater than one, echoing the 'constant-power' scenario postulated by Balmforth et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 355, 1998, pp. 329–358).

Abstract:In this study, ensembles of experimental data are presented and utilized to compare and validate two models used in the simulation of variable density, compressible turbulent mixing. Though models of this kind (Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and Large Eddy Simulations) have been validated extensively with more canonical flows in previous studies, the present approach offers novelty in the complexity of the geometry, the ensemble based validation, and the uniformity of the computational framework on which the models are tested. Moreover, all experimental and computational tasks were completed by the authors which has led to a tightly coupled experimental configuration with its digital twin. The experimental divergent shock tube facility and its data acquisition methods are described and replicated in simulation space. A 2D Euler model which neglects the turbulent mixing at the interface is optimized to experimental data using a Gaussian process. This model then serves as the basis for both the 2D RANS and 3D LES studies that make comparisons to the mixing layer data from the experiment. RANS is shown to produce good agreement with experimental data only at late flow development times. The LES ensembles generally show good agreement with experimental data, but display sensitivity to the characterization of initial conditions. Resolution dependent behavior is also observed for certain higher-order statistics of interest. Overall, the LES model successfully captures the effects of divergent geometry, compressibility, and combined non-linear instabilities inherent to the problem. The successful prediction of mixing width and its growth rate highlight the existence of three distinct regimes in the development of the instability, each with similarities to previously studied instabilities.

Abstract:When turbulent flow is laden with negatively buoyant particles, their mean distribution in the direction of gravity can induce stable density gradients that penalize turbulent fluctuations. This effect is studied numerically for shear-driven flow with dilute noninertial sediment. The turbulent dynamics and sediment transport depend critically on particle settling velocity vs , splitting into two regimes: homogeneous weakly stratified turbulence and flow with developed turbulence atop an intermittent boundary layer. Abstract:In this article we consider the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity depending on the vertical position. As our main result we establish linear enhanced dissipation near the non-affine stationary states replacing Couette flow. Moreover it turns out that the shear flow overcompensates for weakening viscosity: decreasing viscosity leads to stronger enhanced dissipation and increasing viscosity leads to weaker dissipation than in the constant viscosity case.

Abstract:Mixing of inertial point particles in a turbulent channel flow at Re{\tau} = 950 is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations. We consider inertial particles, at varying Stokes number, released from pairs of sources located at different positions inside the channel and analyze the rate at which particles come into close proximity to each other. To do so, we employ a Lagrangian framework, which is suitable for the analysis of trajectories and in general for the study of mixing and dispersion problems. By varying the release position of particles along the wall-normal direction we obtain a thorough description of mixing in an anisotropic turbulent flow. Moreover, we analyze the effects of particle inertia and show that these are not univocal but also depend on the position and alignment of the sources, owing in particular to the dependence of the flow timescales on the distance from the wall.

Abstract:Relatively strongly stratified turbulent flows tend to self-organise into a 'layered anisotropic stratified turbulence' (LAST) regime, characterised by relatively deep and well-mixed density 'layers' separated by relatively thin 'interfaces' of enhanced density gradient. Understanding the associated mixing dynamics is a central problem in geophysical fluid dynamics. It is challenging to study LAST mixing, as it is associated with Reynolds numbers and Froude numbers ( and being characteristic velocity and length scales, the kinematic viscosity and the buoyancy frequency). Since a sufficiently large dynamic range (largely) unaffected by stratification and viscosity is required, it is also necessary for the buoyancy Reynolds number , where is the (appropriately volume-averaged) turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate. This requirement is exacerbated for oceanically relevant flows, as the Prandtl number in thermally stratified water (where is the thermal diffusivity), thus leading (potentially) to even finer density field structures. We report here on four forced fully resolved direct numerical simulations of stratified turbulence at various Froude ( ) and Prandtl ( ) numbers forced so that , with resolutions up to . We find that, as increases, emergent 'interfaces' become finer and their contribution to bulk mixing characteristics decreases at the expense of the small-scale density structures populating the well-mixed 'layers'. However, extreme mixing events (as quantified by significantly elevated local destruction rates of buoyancy variance ) are always preferentially found in the (statically stable) interfaces, irrespective of the value of .

Abstract:With the Eulerian–Lagrangian point-source method, turbulence modulation by dispersed particles is systematically investigated in a three-dimensional spatially evolving compressible mixing layer with the convective Mach number up to 1.2. Particles interact with the mixing layer through two-way coupling, and three simulations with different particle diameters are conducted and compared with the particle-free simulation. The underlying mechanisms responsible for turbulence modulation are revealed by analyzing the transport equations of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy, especially the two-way coupling terms. The compressible mixing layer turbulence is significantly anisotropic with strong three-dimensionality. The addition of particles augments turbulence anisotropy of the shear layer, and the augmentation becomes greater as the particle inertia increases, which is attributed to the different particle responsive features to the fluid fluctuations in the streamwise, normal, and spanwise directions. Particles respond fast to the fluid streamwise fluctuation but slowly to the normal and spanwise fluctuations because the streamwise turbulent intensity is larger compared with the normal and spanwise turbulent intensities. Consequently, the streamwise fluctuating velocity and the Reynolds shear stress are augmented and the normal and spanwise velocity fluctuations are attenuated. Besides, small particles slightly enhance the growth rate of the mixing layer, while large particles reduce the shear layer growth rate in the fully developed turbulence, which is due to the quick response of small particles and the slow response of large particles to the total fluid fluctuation.

Abstract:Geophysical fluid flows that are stably-stratified in density, like most of the ocean, can be strongly turbulent at small scales as a result of shear instabilities. The resulting mixing controls the vertical transport of heat and tracers that are key to large-scale layering and circulation patterns, including those crucial to Earth's climate. However, the physics of sheared stratified turbulence remain poorly understood due to their extraordinary range of scales and spatio-temporal intermittency. This paper reviews a laboratory model, the stratified inclined duct (SID), which encapsulates these fundamental physics and complexity while permitting precise control and measurements, a sweet spot to stimulate fruitful research. We explain how this exchange flow down a modest slope sustains high levels of energy dissipation and mixing while remaining strongly-stratified, thereby accessing the relevant geophysical parameter regime. Emphasising the role of detailed measurements, we highlight key discoveries and unsolved questions around the transition to turbulence, intermittent dynamics and parameterisations of mixing. Dimensional design guidelines show how the optical measurements of the full three-dimensional flow field could be perfected to extrapolate laboratory results to the tantalisingly close regime of the most intense geophysical stratified turbulence.

Abstract:We present high-resolution direct numerical simulations of turbulent three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection with a focus on the Lagrangian properties of the flow. The volume is a Cartesian slab with an aspect ratio of four bounded by free-slip planes at the top and bottom and with periodic side walls. The turbulence is inhomogeneous with respect to the vertical direction. This manifests in different lateral and vertical two-particle dispersion and in a dependence of the dispersion on the initial tracer position for short and intermediate times. Similar to homogeneous isotropic turbulence, the dispersion properties depend in addition to the initial pair separation and yield a short-range Richardson-like scaling regime of two-particle dispersion for initial separations close to the Kolmogorov dissipation length. The Richardson constant is about half the value of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The multiparticle statistics is very close to the homogeneous isotropic case. Clusters of four Lagrangian tracers show a clear trend to form flat, almost coplanar, objects in the long-time limit and deviate from the Gaussian prediction. Significant efforts have been taken to resolve the statistics of the acceleration components up to order four correctly. We find that the vertical acceleration is less intermittent than the lateral one. The joint statistics of the vertical acceleration with the local convective and conductive heat flux suggests that rising and falling thermal plumes are not associated with the largest acceleration magnitudes. It turns out also that the Nusselt number which is calculated in the Lagrangian frame converges slowly in time to the standard Eulerian one.

A pair of equal and opposite oblique instability waves is introduced to perturb the mixing layer at the inlet. The full evolution process of instability, including formation of Lambda-vortices and hairpin vortices, breakdown of large structures and establishment of self-similar turbulence, is presented clearly in the simulation. In the transition process, the flow fields are populated sequentially by Lambda-vortices, hairpin vortices and 'flower' structures. This is the first direct evidence showing the dominance of these structures in the spatially developing mixing layer. Hairpin vortices are found to play an important role in the breakdown of the flow. The legs of hairpin vortices first evolve into sheaths with intense vorticity then break up into small slender vortices. The later flower structures are produced by the instability of the heads of the hairpin vortices. They prevail for a long distance in the mixing layer until the flow starts to settle down into its self-similar state. The preponderance of slender inclined streamwise vortices is observed in the transversal middle zone of the transition region after the breakup of the hairpin legs. This predominance of streamwise vortices also persists in the self-similar turbulent region, though the vortices there are found to be relatively very weak. The evolution of both the mean streamwise velocity profile and the Reynolds stresses is found to have close connection to the behaviour of the large vortex structures. High growth rates of the momentum and vorticity thicknesses are observed in the transition region of the flow. The growth rates in the self-similar turbulence region decay to a value that agrees well with previous experimental and numerical studies. Shocklets occur in the simulation, and their formation mechanisms are elaborated and categorized. This is the first three-dimensional simulation that captures shocklets at this low convective Mach number.
