Abstract:We propose a scheme of quantum computation with nonlinear quantum optics. Polarization states of photons are used for qubits. Photons with different frequencies represent different qubits. Single qubit rotation operation is implemented through optical elements like the Faraday polarization rotator. Photons are separated into different optical paths, or merged into a single optical path using dichromatic mirrors. The controlled-NOT gate between two qubits is implemented by the proper combination of parametric up and down conversions. This scheme has the following features: (1) No auxiliary qubits are required in the controlled-NOT gate operation; (2) No measurement is required in the course of the computation; (3) It is resource efficient and conceptually simple.

Abstract:We propose a linear optical scheme for direct realization of a nondestructive N-qubit controlled phase gate without resorting to a sequence of single- and two-qubit gates. The proposed setup involves linear optical elements, nonmaximally entangled pairs of photons, and multiphoton coincidence detection. To implement the scheme, physical qubits represented by the polarization states of single photons are probabilistically encoded into the two-photon states. Based on such encoding operation, a nondestructive N-qubit phase gate can be directly achieved by N-photon interference on an array of polarization beam splitters and N-photon coincidence detection.

Abstract:Quantum computers promise to increase greatly the efficiency of solving problems such as factoring large integers, combinatorial optimization and quantum physics simulation. One of the greatest challenges now is to implement the basic quantum-computational elements in a physical system and to demonstrate that they can be reliably and scalably controlled. One of the earliest proposals for quantum computation is based on implementing a quantum bit with two optical modes containing one photon. The proposal is appealing because of the ease with which photon interference can be observed. Until now, it suffered from the requirement for non-linear couplings between optical modes containing few photons. Here we show that efficient quantum computation is possible using only beam splitters, phase shifters, single photon sources and photo-detectors. Our methods exploit feedback from photo-detectors and are robust against errors from photon loss and detector inefficiency. The basic elements are accessible to experimental investigation with current technology.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to prepare the Bell states for atomic qubits trapped in separate optical cavities via atom-cavity-laser interaction. The quantum information of each qubit is encoded on the degenerate ground states of the atom, so the entanglement between them is relatively stable against spontaneous emission. The proposed scheme consists of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with two arms, and each arm contains a cavity with an N-type atom in it. It requires two classical fields and a single-photon source. By controlling the sequence and time of atom-cavity-laser interaction, the deterministic production of the atomic Bell states is shown. We also introduce the generalization of the present scheme to generate the 2N-atom Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state.

Abstract:A linear-optical scheme is proposed to implement the nondeterministic two-qubit controlled phase gate in decoherence-free subspace (DFS) with a certain success probability. The proposed setup requires simple linear-optical elements, two pairs of the two-photon polarization entangled states as auxiliary resource, and the conventional photon detectors that only distinguish the vacuum and nonvacuum Fock number states. A sophisticated single-photon detector distinguishing one or two photon states is unnecessary. This makes the protocol more realizable in experiments.

Abstract:A linear optical scheme for realizing the nondeterministic two-qubit quantum controlled phase gate is presented. The proposed setup involves a pair of product states, polarizing beam splitters, phase shifters and photon number resolving detectors. The omission of entangled ancilla input and additional single-qubit operations significantly reduces the complexity of this gate. This can be well implemented in experiment.

Abstract:We present a scheme for linear optical quantum computing using time-bin-encoded qubits in a single spatial mode. We show methods for single-qubit operations and heralded controlled-phase (cphase) gates, providing a sufficient set of operations for universal quantum computing with the Knill-Laflamme-Milburn [Nature (London) 409, 46 (2001)] scheme. Our protocol is suited to currently available photonic devices and ideally allows arbitrary numbers of qubits to be encoded in the same spatial mode, demonstrating the potential for time-frequency modes to dramatically increase the quantum information capacity of fixed spatial resources. As a test of our scheme, we demonstrate the first entirely single spatial mode implementation of a two-qubit quantum gate and show its operation with an average fidelity of 0.84±0.07.

Abstract:If suitable quantum optical interactions were available, transforming optical field mode operators in a nonlinear fashion, the all-photonics platform could be one of the strongest contenders for realizing a quantum computer. Unlike other, matter-based (solid-state or atomic) platforms, photonic qubits can be operated at room temperature and high clock rates (GHz or, in principle, even THz). In addition, recent continuous-variable time-domain approaches are extremely well scalable. Moreover, while single-photon qubits may be processed directly, "brighter" logical qubits may be embedded in individual oscillator modes, using so-called bosonic codes, for an in-principle fault-tolerant processing. In this paper, we show how elements of all-optical, universal, and fault-tolerant quantum computation can be implemented using only beam splitters together with single-mode cubic phase gates in reasonable numbers, and possibly off-line squeezed-state or single-photon resources. Our approach is based on a decomposition technique combining exact gate decompositions and approximate Trotterization. This allows for efficient decompositions of certain nonlinear continuous-variable multimode gates into the elementary gates, where the few cubic gates needed may even be weak or all identical, thus facilitating potential experiments. The final gate operations include two-mode controlled phase rotation and three-mode Rabi-type Hamiltonian gates, which are shown to be employable for realizing high-fidelity single-photon two-qubit entangling gates or, as a bosonic-code example, creating high-quality Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill states. We expect our method of general use with various applications, including those that rely on quartic Kerr-type interactions.

Abstract:Motivated by protocols [G. Gordon, G. Rigolin, Phys. Rev. A 73 (2006) 062316] and [N.B. An, G. Mahler, Phys. Lett. A 365 (2007) 70], we propose a linear optical protocol for quantum state sharing of polarization entangled state in terms optical elements. Our protocol can realize a near-complete quantum state sharing of polarization entangled state with arbitrary coefficients, and it is possible to achieve unity fidelity transfer of the state if the parties collaborate. This protocol can also be generalized to the multi-party system.

Abstract:The first section of the work investigates light modes as a means of implementing optical qubits and qudits. The modes considered are polarization mode, path mode, transverse spatial mode, frequency mode, temporal bin-mode and temporal mode. Subsequently, mathematical model of linear optical elements like beam splitters (BS) and phase shifters are deduced and their capability of representing any single qubit optical gate is exposed. Finally Knill, Laflamme and Milburn (KLM) method of using linear optical elements to promote nonlinear operations based on nonlinear (nondeterministic) sign-flip gate (NS) is explained, and designs of two qubits conditional sign flip gate (c-z1/16) and CNOT gate, both based on KLM method, are demonstrated. So, universal set of quantum gates based on linear optics is possible.

Abstract:Optical beams bearing orbital angular momentum have been recently recognized as potential candidates for realizing D-dimensional quantum systems (qudits). In this paper, we propose an optical scheme to implement an orbital angular momentum beam splitter, which changes the outgoing direction with respect to the incoming direction while leaving the qudit state unchanged. Furthermore we demonstrate that such a beam splitter can be used to sort different orbital angular states of a single photon, create arbitrary superpositions of orbital angular momentum states, and implement a high-dimensional Bennett-Brassard 1984 protocol for quantum key distribution.

Abstract:We introduce a scheme for linear optics quantum computation, that makes no use of teleported gates, and requires stable interferometry over only the coherence length of the photons. We achieve a much greater degree of efficiency and a simpler implementation than previous proposals. We follow the "cluster state" measurement based quantum computational approach, and show how cluster states may be efficiently generated from pairs of maximally polarization entangled photons using linear optical elements. We demonstrate the universality and usefulness of generic parity measurements, as well as introducing the use of redundant encoding of qubits to enable utilization of destructive measurements--both features of use in a more general context.

Abstract:We present an experimental platform for linear-optical quantum information processing. Our setup utilizes multiphoton generation using a high-quality single-photon source, which is demultiplexed across multiple spatial channels, a custom-designed, programmable, low-loss photonic chip, and paired with high-efficiency single-photon detectors. We demonstrate the platform's capability in producing heralded arbitrary two-qubit dual-rail encoded states, a crucial building block for large-scale photonic quantum computers. The programmable chip was fully characterized through a calibration process that allowed us to create a numerical model accounting for fabrication imperfections and measurement errors. As a result, using on-chip quantum state tomography (QST), we achieved high-fidelity quantum state preparation, with a fidelity of 98.5\% specifically for the Bell state.

Abstract:A scheme is proposed to implement a conditional quantum phase gate between atoms trapped in spatially separated cavities. Instead of direct interaction between atoms, quantum interference of polarized photons decayed from the optical cavities is used to realize the desired quantum operation between two distant atoms. The scheme requires a twofold coincidence detection, and is insensitive to the imperfection of the photon detectors.

Abstract:We present an all-optical scheme to implement the non-deterministic quantum logic operation of Knill, Laflamme and Milburn [Nature 409 (2001) 46–52]. The squeezed vacuum state is used as an auxiliary state. That is why a single-photon source is not needed. We demonstrate that the same setup can be used to teleport the superposition state α|0〉+β|1〉 of the vacuum state and the single-photon state or the superposition state α|0〉+β|H〉+γ|V〉 of the vacuum state and the polarized single-photon state.

Abstract:The preparation stage of optical qubits is an essential task in all the experimental setups employed for the test and demonstration of quantum optics principles. We consider a deterministic protocol for the preparation of qubits as a superposition of vacuum and one photon number states, which has the advantage to reduce the amount of resources required via phase-sensitive measurements using a local oscillator (‘dyne detection’). We investigate the performances of the protocol using different phase measurement schemes: homodyne, heterodyne, and adaptive dyne detection (involving a feedback loop). First, we define a suitable figure of merit for the prepared state and we obtain an analytical expression for that in terms of the phase measurement considered. Further, we study limitations that the phase measurement can exhibit, such as delay or limited resources in the feedback strategy. Finally, we evaluate the figure of merit of the protocol for different mode-shapes handily available in an experimental setup. We show that even in the presence of such limitations simple feedback algorithms can perform surprisingly well, outperforming the protocols when simple homodyne or heterodyne schemes are employed.

Abstract:We propose two compact, economic, and scalable schemes for implementing optical controlled-phase-flip and controlled-controlled-phase-flip gates by using the input-output process of a single-sided cavity strongly coupled to a single nitrogen-vacancy-center defect in diamond. Additional photonic qubits, necessary for procedures based on the parity-check measurement or controlled-path and merging gates, are not employed in our schemes. In the controlled-path gate, the paths of the target photon are conditionally controlled by the control photon, and these two paths can be merged back into one by using a merging gate. Only one half-wave plate is employed in our scheme for the controlled-phase-flip gate. Compared with the conventional synthesis procedures for constructing a controlled-controlled-phase-flip gate, the cost of which is two controlled-path gates and two merging gates, or six controlled-NOT gates, our scheme is more compact and simpler. Our schemes could be performed with a high fidelity and high efficiency with current achievable experimental techniques.

Abstract:Integrated quantum photonics provides a promising route towards scalable solid-state implementations of quantum networks, quantum computers, and ultra-low power opto-electronic devices. A key component for many of these applications is the photonic quantum logic gate, where the quantum state of a solid-state quantum bit (qubit) conditionally controls the state of a photonic qubit. These gates are crucial for development of robust quantum networks, non-destructive quantum measurements, and strong photon-photon interactions. Here we experimentally realize a quantum logic gate between an optical photon and a solid-state qubit. The qubit is composed of a quantum dot (QD) strongly coupled to a nano-cavity, which acts as a coherently controllable qubit system that conditionally flips the polarization of a photon on picosecond timescales, implementing a controlled-NOT (cNOT) gate. Our results represent an important step towards solid-state quantum networks and provide a versatile approach for probing QD-photon interactions on ultra-fast timescales.
