Abstract:The integration of functions in materials in order to gain macroscopic effects in response to environmental changes is an ongoing challenge in material science. Here, functions on different hierarchical levels are sequentially linked to translate a pH-triggered conformational transition from the molecular to the macroscopic level to induce directed movements in hydrogels. When the pH is increased, lysine-rich peptide molecules change their conformation into a beta-hairpin structure because of the reduced electrostatic repulsion among the deprotonated amino groups. Coupled to this conformation change is the capability of the beta-hairpin motifs to subsequently assemble into aggregates acting as reversible cross links, which are used as controlling units to fix a temporary macroscopic shape. A structural function implemented into the hydrogel by a microporous architecture-enabled nondisruptive deformation upon compression by buckling of pore walls and their elastic recovery. Coupled to this structural function is the capability of the porous material to enhance the diffusion of ions into the hydrogel and to keep the dimension of the macroscopic systems almost constant when the additional cross-links are formed or cleaved as it limits the dimensional change of the pore walls. Covalent cross-linking of the hydrogel into a polymer network acted as gear shift to ensure translation of the function on the molecular level to the macroscopic dimension. In this way, the information of a directed shape-shift can be programmed into the material by mechanical deformation and pH-dependent formation of temporary net points. The information could be read out by lowering the pH. The peptides reverted back into their original random coil conformation and the porous polymer network could recover from the previously applied elastic deformation. The level of multifunctionality of the hydrogels can be increased by implementation of additional orthogonal functions such as antimicrobicity by proper selection of multifunctional peptides, which could enable sophisticated biomedical devices.

Abstract:Flexible wearable devices have achieved remarkable applications in health monitoring because of the advantages of multisignal collecting and real-time wireless transmission of information. However, the integration of bulky sensing elements and rigid metal circuit components in traditional wearable devices may lead to a mechanical and signal-conducting mismatch between wearable devices and biological tissues, thus restricting their wide applications in the human body. The excellent mechanical properties, conductivity, and high tissue resemblance of conductive hydrogel contribute to its application in flexible electronic sensors to monitor human health. In this work, a dual-network, temperature-responsive ionic conductive hydrogel with excellent stretchability, fast temperature responsiveness, and good conductivity was developed by introducing a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/ tannic acid (TA)/ Fe3+ cross-linked network into the N,N-methylene diacrylamide (MBAA) cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAAm-co-AM)) network. Furthermore, the introduction of the PVP/TA/Fe3+ cross-linked network endowed the hydrogel with excellent stretchability and conductivity. By adjusting the molar ratio of TA and Fe3+ to 3:5, a hydrogel with a maximal stretching ratio of 720% and sensitive strain response (GF = 3.61) was achieved, showing a promising application in wearable strain sensors to monitor both large and fine human motions. Moreover, by introducing PNIPAAm with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the hydrogel may be used to monitor the environmental temperature through the temperature-conductivity responsiveness, which can be applied as a wearable temperature sensor to detect fever or tissue hyperthermia in the human body.

Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels have been appealing candidates for multifunctional ionic skin. However, the fabrication of the multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical property to meet the practical applications is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate)/alginate/hectorite clay Laponite XLS (PNIPAM-SA/ALG/XLS) double cross-linked hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, self-recovery ability, temperature/pH-responsive ability, and strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity was fabricated. The PNSAX hydrogel possessed a moderate tensile strength of 290 kPa at a large elongation rate of 1120% and an excellent compression strength of 2.72 MPa at 90%. The hydrogel also possessed excellent mechanical repeatability and self-recovery ability. Thus, the hydrogel could withstand repetitive deformations for long time periods. Additionally, the hydrogel could change its transparency and volume once at a temperature of 44 °C and change its volume at different pHs. Thus, the visual temperature/pH-responsive ability allowed the hydrogel to qualitatively harvest environmental information. Moreover, the hydrogel possessed an excellent conductivity of 0.43 S/m, and the hydrogel could transform large/subtle deformation and temperature information into electrical signal change. Thus, the ultrafast strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity allowed the hydrogel to quantitatively detect large/small-scale human motions as well as environmental temperature. A cytotoxicity test confirmed the good cytocompatibility. Taken together, the hydrogel was suitable for human motion detecting and environmental information harvesting for long time periods. Therefore, the hydrogel has a great application potential as a multifunctional ionic skin and smart sensor.

Abstract:Here we provide a novel method for fabricating pH- and thermal-responsive triple-shape memory hydrogel based on a single reversible switch phase. A high-density quadruple hydrogen-bonding ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) system was introduced into the hydrogel network, which can occur to varied degrees of dissociation under different pH and temperature conditions. Different degrees of dissociation and reassociation can be viewed as different subsets of memory elements to freeze and unfreeze the temporary shapes. Although this class of hydrogels contains only a single transition phase, they feature a large dissociative differential in response to varied external stimuli to provide multiple windows for programming different temporary shapes.

Abstract:Flexible electronics are playing an increasingly important role in human health monitoring and healthcare diagnosis. Strong adhesion on human tissue would be ideal for reducing interface resistance and motion artifacts, but arising problems such as skin irritation, rubefaction, and pain upon device removal have hampered their utility. Here, inspired by the temperature reversibility of hydrogen bonding, a skin-friendly conductive hydrogel with multiple-hydrogen bonds was designed by using biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), phytic acid (PA), and gelatin (Gel). The obtained PVA/PA/Gel (PPG) hydrogel with temperature-triggered tunable mechanic could reliably adhere to skin and detect electrophysiological signals under a hot compress while be readily removed under a cool compress. Furthermore, the additional advantages of transparency, breathability, and antimicrobial activity of the PPG hydrogel ensure its long-time wearable value on the skin. It is both environmentally friendly and cost saving for the waste PPG hydrogel during production can be recycled based on their reversible physical bonding. The PPG hydrogel sensor is expected to have good application prospects to record electrophysiological signals in human health monitoring.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels are promising candidates for fabricating wearable sensors for human motion detection and disease diagnosis, and electronic skin. However, most of the existing ionic conductive hydrogel-based sensors primarily respond to a single-strain stimulus. Only a few ionic conductive hydrogels can respond to multiple physiological signals. Although some studies have explored multi-stimulus sensors, such as those detecting strain and temperature, the ability to identify the type of stimulus remains a challenge, which limits their applications. Herein, a multi-responsive nanostructured ionic conductive hydrogel was successfully developed by crosslinking the thermally sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-ionic liquid) conductive nanogel (PNI NG) with a poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate-co-ionic liquid) (PSI) network. The resultant hydrogel (PNI NG@PSI) was endowed with good mechanical stretchability (300%), resilience and fatigue resistance, and excellent conductivity (2.4 S m-1). Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibited a sensitive and stable electrical signal response and has a potential application in human motion detection. Moreover, the introduction of a nanostructured thermally responsive PNIPAAm network also endowed it with a sensitive and unique thermal-sensing ability to timely and accurately record temperature changes in the range of 30-45 °C, holding promise for application as a wearable temperature sensor to detect fever or inflammation in the human body. In particular, as a dual strain-temperature sensor, the hydrogel demonstrated an excellent capability of distinguishing the type of stimulus from superposed strain-temperature stimuli via electrical signals. Therefore, the implementation of the proposed hydrogel in wearable multi-signal sensors provides a new strategy for different applications, such as health monitoring and human-machine interactions.

Abstract:Skin-like body sensors have important applications in soft-bodied intelligent robots, electronic skins, and medical health monitoring. Accurate sensing of pressure and temperature are two core elements of skin-like sensors that mimic skins. Skin-like sensors convert sensed external stimuli such as pressure and temperature into electrical signals, enabling visual monitoring of external environmental stimuli. However, there are very limited reports on hydrogels-based and dual stimuli-responsive (strain/temperature) sensors. To this end, we report a highly flexible strain/temperature dual stimuli-responsive sensor based on poly(acrylamide) (PAAM) hydrogels. Our prepared conductive ionic hydrogels are endowed with the ability to undergo phase changes at different temperatures by introducing inexpensive and stable sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) thermotropic phase-change units, which can turn from opaque to transparent within 10 s when temperature is increased, and to opaque again when temperature is decreased. In this study, we have succeeded in producing a dual-responsive multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel (SN-PAAM) that is responsive to temperature/strain dual stimuli and has excellent mechanical properties: high tensile strength (581 kPa), extra long elongation (1,836%), high sensitivity (GF = 1.62 to 2.46), and short response time (120 to 130 ms). To the best of our knowledge, these combined functions are not achievable with conventional strategies. Therefore, the hydrogels developed in this research could have good prospects for different applications such as flexible wearable devices, skin-like sensors, visualization of bionic skins, dual response interactive devices, and in the field of anti-counterfeiting and encryption.

Abstract:Thermoresponsive hydrogels can be used as smart flexible sensors. However, the design and facile preparation of multifunctional thermoresponsive hydrogel sensors still face great challenges. Herein, a tunable thermoresponsive, thermochromic and stretchable poly(2-hydroxypropyl acrylate-co-acrylamide) (P(HPA-co-AM))/hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)/lithium chloride (LiCl) hydrogel with the networks constructed from non-covalent interaction was fabricated by photopolymerization. PHPA exhibits excellent thermoresponsiveness. HPC endows the hydrogel with outstanding mechanical performance and enhanced temperature-sensitivity. LiCl not only provides good conductivity, but also regulates the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the hydrogel. The hydrogel shows tensile strength up to 300 kPa and maximum strain up to 790 %. The LCST value of the hydrogel can be adjusted from 38 to 75 °C. Therefore, the thermoresponsive conductive hydrogel can realize the information encryption, and be used as sensor through strain and temperature changes in the external environment to realize the motion and health detection, and visual signal transmission. This work is expected to provide ideas for the next generation of smart multifunctional electronic skin and information encryption device.
pH and temperature dual-responsive hydrogel actuator with bidirectional bending behavior and ultra large bending angle

Abstract:Smart hydrogels have received attentions for the great potentials in biomedical and robots applications. However, the deformation performance of hydrogels still needs to be improved, especially for the pH and thermal dual responsive hydrogels. In this study, a pH and temperature dual-responsive poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid-3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid)/Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (P(AAm-AAc-3-AAPBA)/PNIPAM) bilayer structures have been prepared by UV polymerization. The PNIPAM layer shrinks/swells when the temperature is higher/lower than the low critical solution temperature, while P(AAm-AAc-3-AAPBA) layer will swell/shrink when pH is too high/low. The volume change trend of the two layer is different, resulting in the bending behaviors of P(AAm-AAc-3-AAPBA)/PNIPAM hydrogel actuator. The bidirectional bending performance can be reversibly, repeatedly, and precisely controlled by pH and temperature-induced cooperative swelling-shrinking properties from both layers. The bending angle of the bilayer structure achieves about 1420° at the environment of pH 2 and 55 °C. It takes about 70s to convert the bending angle of the bilayer structures from 355° (10 °C, pH 2) to -360° (55 °C, pH 12). In addition, three kinds of biomimetic hydrogel structures, such as mechanical gripper, bionic flower and bionic hand, have been prepared and demonstrated good performance. The obtained P(AAm-AAc-3-AAPBA)/PNIPAM hydrogels exhibit excellent pH and thermal responsive bending properties, which enable them as an ideal smart hydrogel system .

Reversible Shape-Shifting of an Ionic Strength Responsive Hydrogel Enabled by Programmable Network Anisotropy.

Abstract:Reversible shape-shifting hydrogels exhibit great potential in diverse fields. Repeatable programmability for the shape transformation has newly been enabled in thermally responsive hydrogels via engineering of the chain orientation of the polymer network, which substantially promotes the transformation capability. However, diversified responsive behavior and the enabling mechanism require further investigation. Herein, we develop an ionic strength (IS) responsive hydrogel enabling the programmable reversible shape transformation based on a semi-interpenetrating network of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Deformation of the hydrogel upon external force can be fixed due to crystallization of PVA that underwent cyclic freezing-thawing. Therefore, the chain orientation can be retained in the deformed area, enabling the programmable IS responsive actuation. In contrast to the thermally responsive actuation originated from the lower critical solution temperature phase transition, the IS responsive actuation does not accompany any phase change and the corresponding mechanism is proposed. Reversible bending providing an actuation angle as large as 80° can be achieved after optimization of the PVA content. The PVA crystals can be melted upon heating, and the responsive actuation can thus be reprogrammed. In addition, utilizing a digital light 3D printer, the hydrogels are further fabricated into arbitrary geometries, thus realizing more complex actuations. Overall, our work provides a general strategy to develop reversible shape-shifting hydrogels and paves the way for soft actuators.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel biodegradable and pH/thermo-sensitive hydrogel based on poly(ɛ-caprolactone), methoxyl poly(ethylene glycol), methylacrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide was prepared by UV-initiated free radical polymerization. The hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transforms infrared ray. The thermal responsibility was investigated with the help of differential scanning calorimetry. Swelling behavior in aqueous medium with different pH value was studied in detail. When the pH value of the aqueous medium was increased from 1.2 to 7.2, the swelling ratio of the hydrogels increased accordingly. The morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the hydrolytic degradation behavior in different aqueous media (pH 1.2 and pH 7.2) was also investigated in detail. The prepared biodegradable pH/thermo-sensitive hydrogel based on poly(ɛ-caprolactone), methoxyl poly(ethylene glycol), methylacrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide hold great promise in the development of a smart drug delivery system.

Abstract:To balance the requirements of transparency, mechanical strength, stable conductivity, and biocompatibility of traditional electronic conductive hydrogels in intelligent devices is still a formidable challenge. The increase of ionic conductive gels has provided decent transparency, stretchability, and wearability in artificial skins but the dilemma still exists between stability and functionality. This article reports a facile strategy to develop a visual thermosensitive physically and chemically dual cross-linked ion-based conductive hydrogel through in situ free-radical copolymerization, achieving robust mechanical properties, an obvious response, and a multiple sensing process. As an archetypical template, the ion-based conductive hydrogel offers an evaluation and monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG), which is comparable to commercial electrodes. Intriguingly, such kinds of conductive gels exhibit tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behaviors. Taking advantage of their high temperature responsive accuracy, the visualized qualitative observation for smart response and digitized measurement and calibration for thermal stimulus can be simultaneously achieved. Abstract:Stimulus-responsive hydrogels, such as conductive hydrogels and thermoresponsive hydrogels, have been explored extensively and are considered promising candidates for smart materials such as wearable devices and artificial muscles. However, most of the existing studies on stimulus-responsive hydrogels have mainly focused on their single stimulus-responsive property and have not explored multistimulus-responsive or multifunction properties. Although some works involved multifunctionality, the prepared hydrogels were incompatible. In this work, a multistimulus-responsive and multifunctional hydrogel system (carboxymethyl cellulose/poly acrylic-acrylamide) with good elasticity, superior flexibility, and stable conductivity was prepared. The prepared hydrogel not only showed excellent human motion detection and physiological signal response but also possessed the ability to respond to environmental temperature changes. By integrating a conductive hydrogel with a thermoresponsive poly(<i>N</i>-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel to form a bilayer hydrogel, the prepared bilayer also functioned as two kinds of actuators owing to the different degrees of swelling and shrinking under different thermal stimuli. Furthermore, the different thermochromic properties of each layer in the bilayer hydrogel endowed the hydrogel with a thermoresponsive "smart" feature, the ability to display and conceal information. Abstract:A hydrogel that fuses long-term biologic integration, multimodal responsiveness, and therapeutic functions has received increasing interest as a wearable and implantable sensor but still faces great challenges as an all-in-one sensor by itself. Multiple bonding with stimuli response in a biocompatible hydrogel lights up the field of soft hydrogel interfaces suitable for both wearable and implantable applications. Given that, we proposed a strategy of combining chemical cross-linking and stimuli-responsive physical interactions to construct a biocompatible multifunctional hydrogel. In this hydrogel system, ureidopyrimidinone/tyramine (Upy/Tyr) difunctionalization of gelatin provides abundant dynamic physical interactions and stable covalent cross-linking; meanwhile, Tyr-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) acts as a conductive filler to establish electrical percolation networks through enzymatic chemical cross-linking. Thus, the hydrogel is characterized with improved conductivity, conformal biointegration features (i.e., high stretchability, rapid self-healing, and excellent tissue adhesion), and multistimuli-responsive conductivity (i.e., temperature and urea). On the basis of these excellent performances, the prepared multifunctional hydrogel enables multimodal wearable sensing integration that can simultaneously track both physicochemical and electrophysiological attributes (i.e., motion, temperature, and urea), providing a more comprehensive monitoring of human health than current wearable monitors. In addition, the electroactive hydrogel here can serve as a bidirectional neural interface for both neural recording and therapeutic electrostimulation, bringing more opportunities for nonsurgical diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Abstract:A hydrogel with multiple responses to pressure, pH and light. Multiple factors stimulate human beings in their daily lives, but uniformly collecting these signals is challenging. This study proposes a physically cross‐linked method that employs hydrogen bonding interactions to prepare poly(vinyl alcohol)/perylene imide (PVA/PI) hydrogels. The prepared PVA/PI hydrogels demonstrate favorable compressive strength (45–75 kPa) and adhesion properties. At room temperature, elongation reaches approximately 400%. Additionally, the PVA/PI hydrogels exhibit strong mechanical properties, with a maximum elongation of 200%, and high ionic‐electronic conductivity of 29.6 S m−1, even after being soaked in a 2 M HCl solution for 24 h. The water‐soluble PI in the PVA/PI hydrogels is environmentally responsive, resulting in a current response time of 100 ms under 365 nm irradiation, as well as reversible fluorescence changes across different pH levels. Both the PVA5/PI1 and PVA5/PI1/HCl2 (the concentrations were 5 wt%, 1 mg mL−1 and 2 mol L−1, respectively) hydrogels demonstrate high sensitivity (0.49 and 7.88 kPa−1) and a wide pressure monitoring range (0.088–30.67 kPa and 0.088–18.67 kPa, respectively) as pressure sensors. The first developed recyclable PVA/PI hydrogel shows promise for use in wearable sensing devices and is expected to be applied in complex environments.

Abstract:Intrinsically ionic conductive hydrogel can response to temperature stimulus due to their temperature‐dependent ion migration. The wearable temperature sensor array fabricated by micromachining process can detect spatio‐temporal temperature distribution of human body with high resolution. The vascular pathways at wrist can be mapped by the temperature sensor array. Hydrogel‐based sensing devices show potential in wearable electronics. However, most hydrogels are mechanically weak, bringing functional stability problems in real usage environment that may interact with occasionally external forces. There are demands to develop robust hydrogel‐based devices with good performances. Here, a highly sensitive temperature sensor with robust, ionic conductive, and double cross‐linked polyacrylamide‐sodium alginate hydrogel is developed. It is found that ions with larger radius show higher sensitivity to temperature changes (e.g., Ba2+) in the hydrogel, because ion movement is dependent with ion sizes. The sensor shows advantages of fast response (2.02 s of 40 °C temperature difference), wide sensing range (22–100 °C), and high robustness (withstanding 2000 cyclic compression and 175 N m−1 for 180° anti‐peeling test). The wearable sensor can effectively distinguish the temperatures of various body parts (0.9 °C temperature difference) and monitor respiration (0.5 °C temperature difference) in real‐time. A wearable 5×5 sensing array is developed for direct human‐body temperature mapping, achieving an optimum resolution of ≈0.15 mm−1 and enabling a clear mapping of superficial vascular pathways at the wrist. This study provides a practical and optimized approach for the implementation of wearable conductive hydrogel‐based devices in the field of human health.

Abstract:Artificial sensory afferent nerves that emulate receptor nanochannel perception and synaptic ionic information processing in chemical environments are highly desirable for bioelectronics. However, challenges persist in achieving life-like nanoscale conformal contact, agile multimodal sensing response, and synaptic feedback with ions. Here, a precisely tuned phase transition poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel is introduced through the water molecule reservoir strategy. The resulting hydrogel with strongly cross-linked networks exhibits excellent mechanical performance (∼2000% elongation) and robust adhesive strength. Importantly, the hydrogel's enhanced ionic conductance and heterogeneous structure of the temperature-sensitive component enable highly sensitive strain information perception (GFmax = 7.94, response time ∼ 87 ms), temperature information perception (TCRmax = -1.974%/°C, response time ∼ 270 ms), and low energy consumption synaptic plasticity (42.2 fJ/spike). As a demonstration, a neuromorphic sensing-synaptic system is constructed integrating iontronic strain/temperature sensors with fiber synapses for real-time information sensing, discrimination, and feedback. This work holds enormous potential in bioinspired robotics and bioelectronics.
A Biocompatible Hydrogel-Coated Fiber-Optic Probe for Monitoring Ph Dynamics in Mammalian Brains in Vivo

Abstract:The pH dynamics in the brain microenvironment is related to a variety of brain diseases, so it is critical to develop pH probes with great efficiency for in vivo detection of brain. Here, we report a biocompatible hydrogel-coated fiber optic probe (HCFOP) for monitoring pH dynamics in the brains of freely-moving mice. The novel pH probe was prepared by combining hydrogel coated silica multimode fiber with pH-sensitive microspheres embedded in hydrogel fiber, and the pH calibration is based on fluorescence ratio detection. The sensor has a dynamic range of pH from 3.0 to 9.0, and a resolution of 0.0014 pH units with good reproducibility, reversibility, and time stability. We tested the capability of our proposed sensor in dynamically detecting pH in the brains of free moving mice, and the biocompatibility for long-term implantation. We implanted the fiber-optic probes into the striatum and hippocampus of mouse brains. During cerebral ischemia, we detected a decrease in pH of about 0.5 after ~15 mins. During epilepsy induced by kanic acid (KA), we found that pH in the hippocampus decreased by about 0.2 after ~80 mins, in relation to the dynamical concentrations of adenosine. This biofriendly and easy-to-manufacture HCFOP provides a unique solution for assessing small changes in the pH of the brain microenvironment, thus holds great promises in neuroscience study.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels with high stretchability can extend their applications as a flexible electrode in electronics, biomedicine, human-machine interfaces, and sensors. However, their time-consuming fabrication and narrow ranges of working temperature and working voltage severely limit their further potential applications. Herein, a conductive nanocomposite network hydrogel fabricated by projection microstereolithography (P μ SL) based 3D printing is proposed, enabling fast fabrication ability with high precision. The 3D printed hydrogels exhibit ultra-stretchability (2500%), hyper-antifreezing (-125°C), extremely low working voltage (<100 μ V), and super cyclic tensile stability (1 million cycles). The hydrogel-based strain sensor can probe both large-scale and tiny human motions, even with ultralow voltage of 100 μ V at extremely low temperature around −115°C. It is demonstrated that the present hydrogels can be used as a flexible electrode for capturing human electrophysiological signals (EOG and EEG), where the alpha and beta waves from the brain can be recorded precisely. Therefore, the present hydrogels will pave the way for the development of next-generation intelligent electronics, especially for those working under extremely low-temperature environments.

Abstract:<p>Polyion complex (PIC) hydrogels attract lots of studies because of the relatively definite network and excellent mechanical strength. However, the stability of the PIC hydrogel is poor in salt solutions due to the counter‐ion screening effect, which restricts their applications. Besides, novel functions of the PIC hydrogels also need to be explored. In this work, a multifunctional PIC hydrogel is prepared by polymerizing a hydrophobic monomer 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate in poly(styrene sulfonic acid) aqueous solution with the presence of counter‐ion NaCl. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, water content, and mechanical properties of the hydrogel are investigated. The introduction of hydrophobic weak electrolyte into the hydrogel brings stable excellent mechanical strength even in NaCl solutions with high concentration and pH modulated softening and strengthening. Surprisingly, the hydrogel swells but is strengthened in HCl, while it shrinks but is softened in NaOH. pH induced shape memory and unique spontaneous shape changing is thus presented benefiting from this synergistic effect. Moreover, information encryption is realized on the PIC hydrogel owing to the transmittance change and the different water absorption capability of the hydrogel at different states. This new kind of PIC hydrogel proposes a new smart material in continuously actuating soft machines and secretive information transformation.</p>
