Line Bundle Resolutions via the Coherent-Constructible Correspondence

Abstract:We consider a finite collection of line bundles $\Phi$ introduced by Bondal on a smooth, projective toric variety $X$. For any coherent sheaf $F$ on $X$, we construct minimal resolutions of $F$ by line bundles in $\Phi$, up to twist, with length bounded by the dimension of $X$ and provide explicit formulae for their Betti numbers. For a toric subvariety $Y \subset X$ of codimension $k$, we give a construction of the minimal resolution of $f_{*}\mathcal{O}_{Y}$ of length $k$ by line bundles in $\Phi$ and relate their Betti numbers to the topology of a stratified real torus. Additionally, we recover a (generally non-minimal) cellular resolution of $f_{*}\mathcal{O}_{Y}$ constructed in Hanlon-Hicks-Lazarev. Aspects of our proof run through the Coherent Constructible Correspondence, a form of homological mirror symmetry for toric varieties.

A monotonicity formula for minimal connections

Abstract:For Hermitian connections on a Hermitian complex line bundle over a Riemannian manifold, we can define the ``volume", which can be considered to be the ``mirror" of the standard volume for submanifolds. We call the critical points minimal connections. In this paper, (1) we prove monotonicity formulas for minimal connections with respect to some versions of volume functionals, which would be important in bubbling analysis. As a corollary, we obtain the vanishing theorem for minimal connections in the odd-dimensional case. (2) We see that the formal ``large radius limit" of the defining equation of minimal connections is that of Yang-Mills connections. Then the existence theorem of minimal connections is proved for a ``sufficiently large" metric. (3) We can consider deformed Donaldson-Thomas (dDT) connections on $G_2$-manifolds as ``mirrors" of calibrated (associative) submanifolds. We show that dDT connections are minimal connections, just as calibrated submanifolds are minimal submanifolds. By the argument specific to dDT connections, we obtain the stronger monotonicity formulas and vanishing theorem for dDT connections than in (1).

Abstract:Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve and $V$ an orthogonal bundle over $C$. Let $\IQeV$ be the isotropic Quot scheme parameterizing degree $e$ isotropic subsheaves of maximal rank in $V$. We give a closed formula for intersection numbers on components of $\IQeV$ whose generic element is saturated. As a special case, for $g \ge 2$, we compute the number of isotropic subbundles of maximal rank and degree of a general stable orthogonal bundle in most cases when this is finite. This is an orthogonal analogue of Holla's enumeration of maximal subbundles in \cite{Ho}, and of the symplectic case studied in \cite{CCH1}.

Abstract:Packing of spheres is a problem with a long history dating back to Kepler's conjecture in 1611. The highest density is realized in face-centred-cubic (FCC) and hexagonal-close-packed (HCP) arrangements. These are only limiting examples of an infinite family of maximal-density structures called Barlow stackings. They are constructed by stacking triangular layers, with each layer shifted with respect to the one below. At the other extreme, Torquato-Stillinger stackings are believed to yield the lowest possible density while preserving mechanical stability. They form an infinite family of structures composed of stacked honeycomb layers. In this article, we characterize layer-correlations in both families when the stacking is random. To do so, we take advantage of the Hägg code -- a mapping between a Barlow stacking and a one-dimensional Ising magnet. The layer-correlation is related to a moment-generating function of the Ising model. We first determine the layer-correlation for random Barlow stacking, finding exponential decay. We next introduce a bias favouring one of two stacking-chiralities -- equivalent to a magnetic field in the Ising model. Although this bias favours FCC ordering, there is no long-ranged order as correlations still decay exponentially. Finally, we consider Torquato-Stillinger stackings, which map to a combination of an Ising magnet and a three-state Potts model. With random stacking, the correlations decay exponentially with a form that is similar to the Barlow problem. We discuss relevance to ordering in clusters of stacked solids and for layer-deposition-based synthesis methods.

Minimal model program for algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures

Abstract:For $\mathbb Q$-factorial klt algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures, we prove the cone theorem, the contraction theorem, and the existence of flips. Therefore, we deduce the existence of the minimal model program for such structures. We also prove the base-point-freeness theorem for such structures of general type and establish an adjunction formula and the existence of $\mathbb Q$-factorial quasi-dlt modifications for algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures.

Minimal cobordisms between thin and thick torus knots

Abstract:We determine the locally flat cobordism distance between torus knots with small and large braid index, up to high precision. Here small means 2, 3, 4, or 6. As an application, we derive a surprising fact about torus knots that are met along the way of almost minimal cobordisms between two-stranded torus knots and the trivial knot.

Abstract:Finding the shortest vectors in a lattice is an NP-hard problem, so low-dimensional results also play an essential role in lattice reduction theory. Using Ryskov's result for the admissible centerings and Tammela's result for determining the Minkowski-reduced form, we prove that the absolute values of the coordinates of a minimal vector on a six-dimensional Minkowski-reduced basis are less than or equal to three. To sharpen P. Tammela's work, we combine some lattice geometry arguments with the aforementioned theoretical results.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. The prescribed rational functions constitute a subset of rational functions satisfying certain symmetry and analyticity conditions. Over a smooth complex curve [math], we construct explicitly a bundle [math] with values in the prescribed rational functions. An intrinsic coordinate-independent formulation (the main result of the paper, Proposition 1) for such bundles is given. The construction presented in this paper is useful for studies of the canonical cosimplicial cohomology of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras on smooth manifolds, as well as for the purposes of conformal field theory and the theory of foliations.

Minimal triangulations of circle bundles

Abstract:A triangulation of a circle bundle $ E \xrightarrow[\text{}]{\pi} B$ is a triangulation of the total space $E$ and the base $B$ such that the projection $\pi$ is a simplicial map. In the paper we address the following questions: Which circle bundles can be triangulated over a given triangulation of the base? What are the minimal triangulations of a bundle? A complete solution for semisimplicial triangulations was given by N. Mnëv. Our results deal with classical triangulations, that is, simplicial complexes. We give an exact answer for an infinite family of triangulated spheres (including the boundary of the $3$-simplex, the boundary of the octahedron, the suspension over an $n$-gon, the icosahedron). For the general case we present a sufficient criterion for existence of a triangulation. Some minimality results follow straightforwadly.

Abstract:The Lawson-Osserman cone [24] is a four dimensional coassociative submanifold in R-7 in terms of Harvey-Lawson calibrated geometries [16] and the basic counterexample for Bernstein type results for minimal graphs of higher codimension in Euclidean space. We shall explore the geometry of this cone in terms of its basic property of constant Jordan angles and show a rigidity result within the class of coassociative submanifolds with constant Jordan angles. This will also shed new light on the higher codimension Bernstein problem.

Abstract:Let $C(n)$ be the solution to the contact number problem, i.e., the maximum number of touching pairs among any packing of $n$ congruent spheres in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We prove the long conjectured values of $C(6)=12, C(7)=15$, and $C(8)=18$. The proof strategy generalizes under an extensive case analysis to $C(9)=21, C(10) = 25, C(11) = 29, C(12) = 33$, and $C(13) = 36$. These results have great importance for condensed matter physics, materials science, crystallography, organic and physical chemistry of interfaces.

Abstract:The starting point of this paper is the computation of minimal hyperbolic polynomials of duals of cones arising from chordal sparsity patterns. From that, we investigate the relation between ranks of homogeneous cones and their minimal polynomials. Along the way, we answer in the negative a question posed in an earlier paper and show examples of homogeneous cones that cannot be realized as rank-one generated (ROG) hyperbolicity cones.

Abstract:The homotopy type of the complement manifold of a complexified toric arrangement has been investigated by d'Antonio and Delucchi in a paper that shows the minimality of such topological space. In this work we associate to a given toric arrangement a matrix that represents the arrangement over the integers. Then, we consider the family of toric arrangements for which this matrix has maximal rank. Our goal is to prove, by means of basic linear algebra arguments, that the complement manifold of the toric arrangements that belong to this family is diffeomorphic to that of centered toric arrangements and thus it is a minimal topological space, too.

Abstract:We investigate configuration-space integrals over punctured Riemann spheres from the viewpoint of the motivic Galois coaction and double-copy structures generalizing the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations in string theory. For this purpose, explicit bases of twisted cycles and cocycles are worked out whose orthonormality simplifies the coaction. We present methods to efficiently perform and organize the expansions of configuration-space integrals in the inverse string tension α ′ or the dimensional-regularization parameter ε of Feynman integrals. Generating-function techniques open up a new perspective on the coaction of multiple polylogarithms in any number of variables and analytic continuations in the unintegrated punctures. We present a compact recursion for a generalized KLT kernel and discuss its origin from intersection numbers of Stasheff polytopes and its implications for correlation functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We find a non-trivial example of correlation functions in ( , 2) minimal models, which can be normalized to become uniformly transcendental in the → ∞ limit.

An SO(3)-monopole cobordism formula relating Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants

Abstract:We prove an analogue of the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture in the context of SO(3) monopoles, obtaining a formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds using the SO(3)-monopole cobordism. The main technical difficulty in the SO(3)-monopole program relating the Seiberg-Witten and Donaldson invariants has been to compute intersection pairings on links of strata of reducible SO(3) monopoles, namely the moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles lying in lower-level strata of the Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="dg-ga/9710032" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/dg-ga/9710032">arXiv:dg-ga/9710032</a>]. In this monograph, we prove --- modulo a gluing theorem which is an extension of our earlier work in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/9907107" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/9907107">arXiv:math/9907107</a>] --- that these intersection pairings can be expressed in terms of topological data and Seiberg-Witten invariants of the four-manifold. This conclusion is analogous to the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture concerning the wall-crossing formula for Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold with $b_2^+=1$; that wall-crossing formula and the resulting structure of Donaldson invariants for four-manifolds with $b_2^+=1$ were established, assuming the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture, by Goettsche [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="alg-geom/9506018" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9506018">arXiv:alg-geom/9506018</a>] and Goettsche and Zagier [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="alg-geom/9612020" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9612020">arXiv:alg-geom/9612020</a>]. In this monograph, we reduce the proof of the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture to an extension of previously established gluing theorems for anti-self-dual SO(3) connections (see [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/9812060" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/9812060">arXiv:math/9812060</a>] and references therein). Since the first version of our monograph was circulated, applications of our results have appeared in the proof of Property P for knots by Kronheimer and Mrowka [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0311489" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0311489">arXiv:math/0311489</a>] and work of Sivek on Donaldson invariants for symplectic four-manifolds [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1301.0377" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1301.0377">arXiv:1301.0377</a>].

Abstract:We prove a number of results to the general effect that, under obviously necessary numerical and determinant constraints, "most" morphisms between fixed bundles on a complex elliptic curve produce (co)kernels which can either be specified beforehand or else meet various rigidity constraints. Examples include: (a) for indecomposable $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal{E'}$ with slopes and ranks increasing strictly in that order the space of monomorphisms whose cokernel is semistable and maximally rigid (i.e. has minimal-dimensional automorphism group) is open dense; (b) for indecomposable $\mathcal{K}$, $\mathcal{E}$ and stable $\mathcal{F}$ with slopes increasing strictly in that order and ranks and determinants satisfying the obvious additivity constraints the space of embeddings $\mathcal{K}\to \mathcal{E}$ whose cokernel is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}$ is open dense; (c) the obvious mirror images of these results; (d) generalizations weakening indecomposability to semistability + maximal rigidity; (e) various examples illustrating the necessity of the assorted assumptions.
