Abstract:In recent years, Software Transactional Memory systems (STMs) have garnered significant interest as an elegant alternative for addressing concurrency issues in memory. STM systems take optimistic approach. Multiple transactions are allowed to execute concurrently. On completion, each transaction is validated and if any inconsistency is observed it is aborted. Otherwise it is allowed to commit. In databases a class of histories called as conflict-serializability (CSR) based on the notion of conflicts have been identified, whose membership can be efficiently verified. As a result, CSR is the commonly used correctness criterion in databases. Similarly, using the notion of conflicts, a correctness criterion, conflict-opacity (co-opacity) which is a sub-class of can be designed whose membership can be verified in polynomial time. Using the verification mechanism, an efficient STM implementation can be designed that is permissive w.r.t co-opacity. By storing multiple versions for each transaction object, multi-version STMs provide more concurrency than single-version STMs. But the main drawback of co-opacity is that it does not admit histories that are uses multiple versions. This has motivated us to develop a new conflict notions for multi-version STMs. In this paper, we present a new conflict notion multi-version conflict. Using this conflict notion, we identify a new subclass of opacity (a popular correctness-criterion), mvc-opacity that admits multi-versioned histories and whose membership can be verified in polynomial time. We show that co-opacity is a proper subset of this class. The proposed conflict notion mv-conflict can be applied on non-sequential histories as well unlike traditional conflicts. Further, we believe that this conflict notion can be easily extended to other correctness-criterion as well.

Abstract:Traditional CSCW applications maintain the consistency of shared resources by permitting only one operation on a resource at a time. These models are not suitable for the co-operative design situation, which needs the inspiration and creation of the designers.We present a consistency control model based on mer multiple versions of document. Designers can work offline, and fully control the local version of the design documents. It is the system's duty to maintain the consistency between the multiple versions all around network detect collisions, either merge automatically or invoke the participants to negotiate.

Abstract:Software Transactional Memory Systems (STM) are a promising alternative to lock based systems for concurrency control in shared memory systems. In multiversion STM systems, each write on a transaction object produces a new version of that object. The advantage obtained by storing multiple versions is that one can ensure that read operations do not fail. Opacity is a commonly used correctness criterion for STM systems. Multi-Version permissive STM system never aborts a read-only transaction. Although many multi-version STM systems have been proposed, to the best of our knowledge none of them have been formally proved to satisfy opacity. In this paper we present a time-stamp based multiversion STM system that satisfies opacity and mv-permissiveness. We formally prove the correctness of the proposed STM system. We also present garbage collection procedure which deletes unwanted versions of the transaction objects and formally prove it correctness.

Abstract:Software Transactional Memory Systems (STM) are a promising alternative for concurrency control in shared memory systems. Multiversion STM systems maintain multiple versions for each t-object. The advantage of storing multiple versions is that it facilitates successful execution of higher number of read operations than otherwise. Multi-Version permissiveness (mv-permissiveness) is a progress condition for multi-version STMs that states that a read-only transaction never aborts. Recently a STM system was proposed that maintains only a single version but is mv-permissive. This raises a natural question: how much concurrency can be achieved by multi-version STM. We show that fewer transactions are aborted in multi-version STMs than single-version systems. We also show that any STM system that is permissive w.r.t opacity must maintain at least as many versions as the number of live transactions. A direct implication of this result is that no single-version STM can be permissive w.r.t opacity.In this paper we present a time-stamp based multiversion STM system that satisfies opacity and is easy to implement. We formally prove the correctness of the proposed STM system. Although many multi-version STM systems have been proposed in literature that satisfy opacity, to the best of our knowledge none of them has been formally proved to be opaque. We also present garbage collection procedure which deletes unwanted versions of the transaction objects. We show that with garbage collection the number of versions maintained is bounded by number of live transactions.
Repairing Conflicts among MVCC Transactions

Abstract:The optimistic variants of MVCC (Multi-Version Concurrency Control) avoid blocking concurrent transactions at the cost of having a validation phase. Upon failure in the validation phase, the transaction is usually aborted and restarted from scratch. The "abort and restart" approach becomes a performance bottleneck for the use cases with high contention objects or long running transactions. In addition, restarting from scratch creates a negative feedback loop in the system, because the system incurs additional overhead that may create even further conflicts. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for conflict resolution in MVCC for in-memory databases. This low overhead approach summarizes the transaction programs in the form of a dependency graph. The dependency graph also contains the constructs used in the validation phase of the MVCC algorithm. Then, in the case of encountering conflicts among transactions, the conflict locations in the program are quickly detected, and the conflicting transactions are partially re-executed. This approach maximizes the reuse of the computations done in the initial execution round, and increases the transaction processing throughput.

Abstract:At present, model-driven engineering plays an essential role in software development. Model versioning systems perform the task of conflict detection when merging parallel-developed model versions. However, conflict detection is typically conducted at the primitive operation level in operation-based systems. This situation implies that the overall intention of model developers may be disregarded, which results in unsatisfactory performance. In this study, we present an approach to conflict detection at the composite level in model versioning systems for Unified Modeling Language. This approach has two main stages. During the preprocessing stage, redundant operations are removed from the originally recorded operation lists to increase efficiency. During the conflict detection stage, a fragmentation procedure is conducted with only potentially conflicted operations allocated into the same fragment. Then, a pattern-matching strategy is applied to help indicate conflicts.

Abstract:Multi-versioned database systems have the potential to significantly increase the amount of concurrency in transaction processing because they can avoid read-write conflicts. Unfortunately, the increase in concurrency usually comes at the cost of transaction serializability. If a database user requests full serializability, modern multi-versioned systems significantly constrain read-write concurrency among conflicting transactions and employ expensive synchronization patterns in their design. In main-memory multi-core settings, these additional constraints are so burdensome that multi-versioned systems are often significantly outperformed by single-version systems. We propose Bohm, a new concurrency control protocol for main-memory multi-versioned database systems. Bohm guarantees serializable execution while ensuring that reads never block writes. In addition, Bohm does not require reads to perform any book-keeping whatsoever, thereby avoiding the overhead of tracking reads via contended writes to shared memory. This leads to excellent scalability and performance in multi-core settings. Bohm has all the above characteristics without performing validation based concurrency control. Instead, it is pessimistic, and is therefore not prone to excessive aborts in the presence of contention. An experimental evaluation shows that Bohm performs well in both high contention and low contention settings, and is able to dramatically outperform state-of-the-art multi-versioned systems despite maintaining the full set of serializability guarantees.

Multi-Valued Connected Consensus: A New Perspective on Crusader Agreement and Adopt-Commit

Abstract:Algorithms to solve fault-tolerant consensus in asynchronous systems often rely on primitives such as crusader agreement, adopt-commit, and graded broadcast, which provide weaker agreement properties than consensus. Although these primitives have a similar flavor, they have been defined and implemented separately in ad hoc ways. We propose a new problem called connected consensus that has as special cases crusader agreement, adopt-commit, and graded broadcast, and generalizes them to handle multi-valued inputs. The generalization is accomplished by relating the problem to approximate agreement on graphs. We present three algorithms for multi-valued connected consensus in asynchronous message-passing systems, one tolerating crash failures and two tolerating malicious (unauthenticated Byzantine) failures. We extend the definition of binding, a desirable property recently identified as supporting binary consensus algorithms that are correct against adaptive adversaries, to the multi-valued input case and show that all our algorithms satisfy the property. Our crash-resilient algorithm has failure-resilience and time complexity that we show are optimal. When restricted to the case of binary inputs, the algorithm has improved time complexity over prior algorithms. Our two algorithms for malicious failures trade off failure resilience and time complexity. The first algorithm has time complexity that we prove is optimal but worse failure-resilience, while the second has failure-resilience that we prove is optimal but worse time complexity. When restricted to the case of binary inputs, the time complexity (as well as resilience) of the second algorithm matches that of prior algorithms.

Abstract:In the modern era of multi-core systems, the main aim is to utilize the cores properly. This utilization can be done by concurrent programming. But developing a flawless and well-organized concurrent program is difficult. Software Transactional Memory Systems (STMs) are a convenient programming interface which assist the programmer to access the shared memory concurrently without worrying about consistency issues such as priority-inversion, deadlock, livelock, etc. Another important feature that STMs facilitate is compositionality of concurrent programs with great ease. It composes different concurrent operations in a single atomic unit by encapsulating them in a transaction. Many STMs available in the literature execute read/write primitive operations on memory buffers. We represent them as Read-Write STMs or RWSTMs. Whereas, there exist some STMs (transactional boosting and its variants) which work on higher level operations such as insert, delete, lookup, etc. on a hash-table. We refer these STMs as Object Based STMs or OSTMs. The literature of databases and RWSTMs say that maintaining multiple versions ensures greater concurrency. This motivates us to maintain multiple version at higher level with object semantics and achieves greater concurrency. So, this paper pro-poses the notion of Optimized Multi-version Object Based STMs or OPT-MVOSTMs which encapsulates the idea of multiple versions in OSTMs to harness the greater concurrency efficiently.

Abstract:Code merging plays an important role in collaborative software development. However, it is often tedious and error-prone for developers to manually resolve merge conflicts, especially when there are many conflicts after merging long-lived branches or parallel versions. In this paper, we present SoMany-Conflicts, a language-agnostic approach to help developers resolve merge conflicts systematically, by utilizing their interrelations (e.g., dependency, similarity, etc.). SoMany-Conflicts employs a graph representation to model these interrelations and provides 3 major features: 1) cluster and order related conflict based on the graph connectivity; 2) suggest related conflicts of one focused conflict based on the topological sorting, 3) suggest resolution strategies for unresolved conflicts based already resolved ones. We have implemented SoManyConflicts as a Visual Studio Code extension that supports multiple languages (Java, JavaScript, and TypeScript, etc.), which is briefly introduced in the video: https://youtu.be/_asWh_ j1KTU. Advancing Multi-Context Systems by Inconsistency Management

Abstract:Multi-Context Systems are an expressive formalism to model (possibly) non-monotonic information exchange between heterogeneous knowledge bases. Such information exchange, however, often comes with unforseen side-effects leading to violation of constraints, making the system inconsistent, and thus unusable. Although there are many approaches to assess and repair a single inconsistent knowledge base, the heterogeneous nature of Multi-Context Systems poses problems which have not yet been addressed in a satisfying way: How to identify and explain a inconsistency that spreads over multiple knowledge bases with different logical formalisms (e.g., logic programs and ontologies)? What are the causes of inconsistency if inference/information exchange is non-monotonic (e.g., absent information as cause)? How to deal with inconsistency if access to knowledge bases is restricted (e.g., companies exchange information, but do not allow arbitrary modifications to their knowledge bases)? Many traditional approaches solely aim for a consistent system, but automatic removal of inconsistency is not always desireable. Therefore a human operator has to be supported in finding the erroneous parts contributing to the inconsistency. In my thesis those issues will be adressed mainly from a foundational perspective, while our research project also provides algorithms and prototype implementations.

Abstract:In collaborative software development, programmers create software branches to add features and fix bugs tentatively, and then merge branches to integrate edits. When edits from different branches textually overlap (i.e., textual conflicts ) or lead to compilation and runtime errors (i.e., build and test conflicts ), it is challenging for developers to remove such conflicts. Prior work proposed tools to detect and solve conflicts. They investigate how conflicts relate to code smells and the software development process. However, many questions are still not fully investigated, such as what types of conflicts exist in real-world applications and how developers or tools handle them. For this article, we used automated textual merge, compilation, and testing to reveal three types of conflicts in 208 open-source repositories: textual conflicts, build conflicts (i.e., conflicts causing build errors), and test conflicts (i.e., conflicts triggering test failures). We manually inspected 538 conflicts and their resolutions to characterize merge conflicts from different angles. Our analysis revealed three interesting phenomena. First, higher-order conflicts (i.e., build and test conflicts) are harder to detect and resolve, while existing tools mainly focus on textual conflicts. Second, developers manually resolved most higher-order conflicts by applying similar edits to multiple program locations; their conflict resolutions share common editing patterns implying great opportunities for future tool design. Third, developers resolved 64% of true textual conflicts by keeping complete edits from either a left or right branch. Unlike prior studies, our research for the first time thoroughly characterizes three types of conflicts, with a special focus on higher-order conflicts and limitations of existing tool design. Our work will shed light on future research of software merge.

Abstract:Model-driven engineering is now playing an essential role in software development. Adequate model versioning systems are critical to enable efficient team-based development of models. The state-of-art model versioning systems are able to detect and help resolving basic conflicts which arise during the merging of different model versions. However, conflict resolution is typically conducted at the primitive operation level in operation-based system and user interaction is required to choose from the conflicting operations. In this study, we present an approach to resolve conflicts automatically at composite level in model versioning systems for Unified Modeling Language (UML). This approach has two main stages. During the merging stage, a temporary merged model is generated, which represent the central intention of model developers. And during the conflict resolution stage, our approach automatically finds and presents to the model developers all solutions for resolving all inconsistencies in the merged model. The approach was empirically evaluated on a range of test models and proved to be scalable to models of large size.

Abstract:Most of current collaborative feature modeling systems use the token-passing method as its collaborative strategy that makes the collaborative design between multi-clients inflexible and inefficient. Based on the analysis of feature operation in collaborative environment, we propose a new method to solve the concurrency conflicts, an enhanced naming mechanism for collaborative feature modeling to preserve the design intensions, and a process for non-locked multi-client collaborative design. The algorithms have been implemented in a prototype system integrating C++, Java3D and VML, CORBA technologies. Flexibility and efficiency in collaborative feature modeling environment have been achieved in our system.

Abstract:Resolving conflicts is the main challenge for software merging. The existing merge tools usually rely on the developer to manually resolve conflicts. This is of course inefficient. We propose an interactive approach for resolving merge conflicts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt for conflict resolution of structured merge. To represent the possibly very large set of candidate programs, we propose an expressive and efficient representation by version space algebra. We also design a simple mechanism for ranking resolutions in the program space, such that the top-ranked resolution is very likely to meet the developer's expectation. We prototype our approach as a merge tool AutoMerge, and evaluate it on 244 real-world conflicts arising from 10 open-source projects. Results show great practicality of our approach.
Verifying Semantic Conflict-Freedom in Three-Way Program Merges

Abstract:Even though many programmers rely on 3-way merge tools to integrate changes from different branches, such tools can introduce subtle bugs in the integration process. This paper aims to mitigate this problem by defining a semantic notion of confict-freedom, which ensures that the merged program does not introduce new unwanted behaviors. We also show how to verify this property using a novel, compositional algorithm that combines lightweight dependence analysis for shared program fragments and precise relational reasoning for the modifications. We evaluate our tool called SafeMerge on 52 real-world merge scenarios obtained from Github and compare the results against a textual merge tool. The experimental results demonstrate the benefits of our approach over syntactic confict-freedom and indicate that SafeMerge is both precise and practical.

Abstract:Collaborative software development significantly enhances development productivity by enabling multiple contributors to work concurrently on different branches. Despite these advantages, such collaboration often increases the likelihood of causing conflicts. Resolving these conflicts brings huge challenges, primarily due to the necessity of comprehending the differences between conflicting versions. Researchers have explored various automatic conflict resolution techniques, including unstructured, structured, and learning-based approaches. However, these techniques are mostly heuristic-based or black-box in nature, which means they do not attempt to solve the root cause of the conflicts, i.e., the existence of different program behaviors exhibited by the conflicting versions. In this work, we propose sMerge, a novel conflict resolution approach based on the semantics of program behaviors. We first give the formal definition of the merge conflict problem as well as the specific conditions under which conflicts happen and the criteria employed to select certain version as the resolution. Based on the definition, we propose to resolve the conflicts from the perspective of program behaviors. In particular, we argue that the key to resolving conflicts is identifying different program behaviors, and thus can be solved through targeted test generation. We conduct an extensive evaluation of sMerge using a comprehensive dataset of conflicts sourced from various projects. Our results show that sMerge can effectively solve the merge problem by employing different test generation techniques, including search-based, GPT-based, and manual testing. We remark that sMerge provides a way to understand the program behavior differences through testing, which not only allows us to solve the merge problem soundly but also enables the detection of incorrect ground truths provided by developers, thereby enhancing the reliability of the merge process.
Automatic Detection and Resolution of Software Merge Conflicts: Are We There Yet?

Abstract: Developers create software branches for tentative feature addition and bug fixing, and periodically merge branches to release software with new features or repairing patches. When the program edits from different branches textually overlap (i.e., textual conflicts), or the co-application of those edits lead to compilation or runtime errors (i.e., compiling or dynamic conflicts), it is challenging and time-consuming for developers to eliminate merge conflicts. Prior studies examined %the popularity of merge conflicts and how conflicts were related to code smells or software development process; tools were built to find and solve conflicts. However, some fundamental research questions are still not comprehensively explored, including (1) how conflicts were introduced, (2) how developers manually resolved conflicts, and (3) what conflicts cannot be handled by current tools. For this paper, we took a hybrid approach that combines automatic detection with manual inspection to reveal 204 merge conflicts and their resolutions in 15 open-source repositories. %in the version history of 15 open-source projects. Our data analysis reveals three phenomena. First, compiling and dynamic conflicts are harder to detect, although current tools mainly focus on textual conflicts. Second, in the same merging context, developers usually resolved similar textual conflicts with similar strategies. Third, developers manually fixed most of the inspected compiling and dynamic conflicts by similarly editing the merged version as what they did for one of the branches. Our research reveals the challenges and opportunities for automatic detection and resolution of merge conflicts; it also sheds light on related areas like systematic program editing and change recommendation.
