Abstract:A series of Cr-based complexes <b>6-10</b> bearing aminophosphine (P,N) ligands Ph2P-L-NH2 [L = CH2CH2 (<b>1</b>), L = CH2CH2CH2 (<b>2</b>), and L = C6H4CH2 (<b>3</b>)] and phosphine-imine-pyrryl (P,N,N) ligands 2-(Ph2P-L-N=CH)C4H3NH [L = CH2CH2CH2 (<b>4</b>) and L = C6H4CH2 (<b>5</b>)] were prepared, and their catalytic properties were examined for ethylene tri/tetramerization. X-ray crystallographic analysis of complex <b>8</b> indicated the κ2-P,N bidentate coordination mode at the Cr(III) center and the distorted octahedral geometry of monomeric P,N-CrCl3. Upon activation by methylaluminoxane (MAO), complexes <b>7-8</b> bearing P,N (PC3N backbone) ligands <b>2-3</b> showed good catalytic reactivity for ethylene tri/tetramerization. On the other hand, complex <b>6</b> bearing the P,N (PC2N backbone) ligand <b>1</b> was found active for non-selective ethylene oligomerization, while complexes <b>9-10</b> bearing P,N,N ligands <b>4-5</b> only produced polymerization products. In particular, the high catalytic activity of 458.2 kg/(g·Cr·h), excellent selectivity of 90.9% (1-hexene and 1-octene combined), and extremely low PE content of 0.1% were obtained with complex <b>7</b> in toluene at 45 °C and 45 bar. These results suggest that rational control of P,N and P,N,N ligand backbones, including a carbon spacer and rigidity of a carbon bridge, can lead to the high-performance catalyst for the ethylene tri/tetramerization process.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve The paper aims to develop a series of chromium (Cr)-based catalyst complexes for selective ethylene trimerization/tetramerization reactions. Specifically, the researchers synthesized several Cr-based complexes containing aminophosphine (P,N) ligands and phosphine imine pyrrolyl (P,N,N) ligands and investigated their catalytic performance in ethylene trimerization/tetramerization reactions. ### Main Research Background Linear α-olefins (LAOs) are key intermediates in the production of commodity polymers, poly α-olefins, plasticizer alcohols, detergent alcohols, and lubricant additives. With the increasing demand for polyolefin products, the demand for 1-hexene and 1-octene is also growing. Currently, 1-hexene and 1-octene are mainly produced through ethylene oligomerization. However, non-selective ethylene oligomerization methods usually produce a wide distribution of oligomers, requiring additional energy to separate the desired single components. In contrast, ethylene trimerization/tetramerization methods can directly and selectively produce 1-hexene and 1-octene, thus attracting extensive attention from both academia and industry. ### Research Objectives 1. **Synthesize Novel Chromium-Based Catalysts**: Prepare a series of Cr-based complexes containing P,N and P,N,N ligands with different carbon chain lengths and rigidities. 2. **Investigate Catalytic Performance**: Evaluate the catalytic activity and selectivity of these complexes in ethylene trimerization/tetramerization reactions. 3. **Optimize Reaction Conditions**: Optimize catalytic performance by adjusting parameters such as ethylene pressure, reaction temperature, aluminum/chromium molar ratio, chromium source, and solvent type. ### Main Findings - **Catalytic Activity and Selectivity**: Complexes 6-8 containing P,N ligands exhibited higher catalytic activity for ethylene oligomerization, while complexes 9-10 containing P,N,N ligands mainly catalyzed ethylene polymerization. - **Effect of Ligand Structure**: The carbon chain length and rigidity of the ligands significantly affected catalytic selectivity and activity. In particular, complex 8 with a more rigid phenyl backbone showed slightly higher activity but lower selectivity. - **Optimal Reaction Conditions**: Under conditions of 45°C and 45 bar, using complex 7 and methylaluminoxane (MAO) as a cocatalyst, the highest catalytic activity (458.2 kg/(g·Cr·h)), excellent selectivity (total selectivity for 1-hexene and 1-octene of 90.9%), and extremely low polyethylene content (0.1%) were achieved. ### Conclusion By rationally designing the carbon chain length and rigidity of P,N and P,N,N ligands, the catalytic performance of chromium-based catalysts in ethylene trimerization/tetramerization reactions can be significantly improved. This study provides valuable references for designing efficient selective ethylene trimerization/tetramerization catalysts.
