Abstract:Energy‐dense rechargeable batteries have enabled a multitude of applications in recent years. Moving forward, they are expected to see increasing deployment in performance‐critical areas such as electric vehicles, grid storage, space, defense, and subsea operations. While this at first glance spells great promise for conventional lithium‐ion batteries, all of these use‐cases, unfortunately, share periodic and recurring exposures to extremely low‐temperature conditions, a performance constraint where the lithium‐ion chemistry can fail to perform optimally. Next‐generation chemistries employing alternative anodes with increased solvent compatibility or altogether different operating mechanisms could present an avenue for overcoming many of the low‐temperature hurdles intrinsic to the lithium‐ion battery. In this article, a brief overview of the challenges in developing lithium‐ion batteries for low‐temperature use is provided, and then an array of nascent battery chemistries are introduced that may be intrinsically better suited for low‐temperature conditions moving forward. Specifically, the prospects of using lithium‐metal, lithium‐sulfur, and dual‐ion batteries for performance‐critical low‐temperature applications are evaluated. These three chemistries are presented as prototypical examples of how the conventional low‐temperature charge‐transfer resistances can be overcome. However, these three chemistries also present their own unique challenges at low temperatures, highlighting the balance between traditional low‐temperature electrolyte design and next‐generation approaches.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the preferred battery system for portable electronic devices and transportation equipment due to their high specific energy, good cycling performance, low self-discharge, and absence of memory effect. However, excessively low ambient temperatures will seriously affect the performance of LIBs, which are almost incapable of discharging at −40~−60°C. There are many factors affecting the low-temperature performance of LIBs, and one of the most important is the electrode material. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop electrode materials or modify existing materials in order to obtain excellent low-temperature LIB performance. A carbon-based anode is one candidate for use in LIBs. In recent years, it has been found that the diffusion coefficient of lithium ion in graphite anodes decreases more obviously at low temperatures, which is an important factor limiting its low-temperature performance. However, the structure of amorphous carbon materials is complex; they have good ionic diffusion properties, and their grain size, specific surface area, layer spacing, structural defects, surface functional groups, and doping elements may have a greater impact on their low-temperature performance. In this work, the low-temperature performance of LIBs was achieved by modifying the carbon-based material from the perspectives of electronic modulation and structural engineering.

Abstract:Rechargeable alkali metal ion (Li+, Na+, K+) batteries have shown great success in room-temperature energy storage. However, their low-temperature (subzero temperature) applications are still severely restricted, and the poor electrochemical performance of the anode materials at low temperature serves as a critical obstacle. Therefore, it is urgent to obtain a comprehensive understanding towards the key effects of low temperatures on the performance of the anodes and overview the related improving strategies. In this work, the effects that temperature would impose on electrode performance are firstly discussed. Next, the progress in low-temperature anodes of alkali metal ion batteries is reviewed, by the classification of the reaction types of the anode materials, including intercalation-type anodes, conversion-type anodes, alloy anodes and alkali metal anodes, and corresponding strategies to improve the performance of the anodes are summarized as well. At last, some promising research directions in this field are proposed. This work is intended to shed some light on future exploitation of high-performance low-temperature anode materials.
Boosting the Low-Temperature Performance of Graphite Anodes by Creating an Electrochemically Active Interface

Abstract:Graphite is the major anode material used in commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the sluggish ion-transfer kinetics associated with graphite anodes significantly restrict the operation of LIBs over a wide temperature. This is primarily due to their low reversible capacity and the substantial overpotential exhibited under low-temperature conditions. To address this limitation, we demonstrate herein an approach that involves grafting an electrochemically active lithium benzenesulfonate layer onto a graphite surface through a typical reduction reaction of diazonium cations, followed by ion exchange process. This surface modification reduces the charge transfer resistance of graphite anodes, leading to an excellent reversible capacity of similar to 150 mAh g(-1) at low-temperatures (-20 degrees C, 0.1C). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicates that both desolvation of the lithium ions outside the graphite, and lithium diffusion within the solid electrolyte interphase and graphite lattice are two crucial rate-limiting steps during the Li (de)lithiation, with the latter dominating during the low-temperature operation. These findings demonstrate a facile method for enhancing the low-temperature performance of graphite through surface modification and provide valuable insights into fundamental understandings that can guide the future design of better -low-temperature graphite anodes.

Abstract:Under the background of continuous consumption of fossil energy, lithium-ion battery has become the mainstream energy storage battery. With the expansion of lithium-ion battery application fields, such as aerospace, deep-sea diving and polar exploration, its performance at low temperatures below −20 °C or even at extreme cold states should be improved, which is affected by electrode materials, electrolyte and other aspects. In this review, the progress in improvement of various components of electrolyte system and graphite anode in lithium ion battery at low temperature is summarized. Finally, the development prospect of low temperature lithium ion battery is discussed.

Abstract:ConspectusBuilding rechargeable batteries for subzero temperature application is highly demanding for various specific applications including electric vehicles, grid energy storage, defense/space/subsea explorations, and so forth. Commercialized nonaqueous lithium ion batteries generally adapt to a temperature above -20 °C, which cannot well meet the requirements under colder conditions. Certain improvements have been achieved with nascent materials and electrolyte systems but have mainly been restrained to discharge and within a small rate at temperatures above -40 °C. Moreover, the recharging process of batteries based on the graphite anode still faces huge challenges from the simultaneous Li+ intercalation and potential Li stripping at subzero temperatures. Revealing the temperature-dependent evolution of physicochemical and electrochemical properties will greatly benefit our understanding of the limiting factors at low temperature, which is of significant importance.Herein, we dissect the ion movements in the liquid electrolyte and solid electrode as well as their interphase to analyze the temperature effect on Li+-diffusion behavior during charging/discharging processes. An electrolyte is the vital factor, and its ionic conductivity guarantees the smooth operation of the battery. However, it is the sluggish diffusion in the solid, especially the charge transfer at the solid electrolyte/electrode interfaces (SEI), that greatly limits the kinetics at low temperature. Many strategies have been put forward to tame electrolytes for low-temperature application. From a macroscopic point of view, multiple solvents are mixed to adjust the liquid temperature range and viscosity. With respect to the microscopic nature, research is focusing on the solvation structure by formulating the ratio of Li+ ions to solvent molecules. The binding energy of the Li+-solvent complex is crucial for the desolvation process at low temperature, which is manipulated with fluorinated solvents or other weakly solvating electrolytes. On the basis of an optimized electrolyte, electrodes and their reaction mechanism need to be coupled carefully because different materials show totally different responses to temperature change. To avoid the sluggish desolvation process or slow diffusion in the bulk intercalation compounds, several kinds of materials are summarized for low temperature use. The intercalation pseudocapacitive behavior can compensate for the kinetics to some extent, and a metal anode is a good candidate for replacing a graphite anode to build high-energy-density batteries at subzero temperature. It is also a wise choice to develop nascent battery chemistry based on the co-intercalation of solvent molecules into electrodes. Furthermore, the interfacial resistance contributes a lot at low temperature, which need be modified to accelerate the Li+ diffusion across the film. This will be linked to the electrolyte, exactly speaking, the solvation structure, to regulate the organic and inorganic components as well as the structure. Although it is difficult to investigate SEI on a graphite anode owing to its poor performance at low temperature, great efforts on Li metal anodes have offered some valuable information as reference. It is worth mentioning that the improvement in low-temperature performance calls for not only a change in the single composition but also the synergetic effect of each part in the whole battery. The elementary studies covered in this account could be taken as insight into some key strategies that help advance the low-temperature battery chemistry.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are at the forefront of energy storage and highly demanded in consumer electronics due to their high energy density, long battery life, and great flexibility. However, LIBs usually suffer from obvious capacity reduction, security problems, and a sharp decline in cycle life under low temperatures, especially below 0 °C, which can be mainly ascribed to the decrease in Li+ diffusion coefficient in both electrodes and electrolyte, poor transfer kinetics on the interphase, high Li+ desolvation barrier in the electrolyte, and severe Li plating and dendrite. Targeting such issues, approaches to improve the kinetics and stability of cathodes are also dissected, followed by the evaluation of the application prospects and modifications between various anodes and the strategies of electrolyte design including cosolvent, blended Li salts, high-concentration electrolyte, and additive introduction. Such designs elucidate the successful exploration of low-temperature LIBs with high energy density and long lifespan. This review prospects the future paths of research for LIBs under cold environments, aiming to provide insightful guidance for the reasonable design of LIBs under low temperature, accelerating their widespread application and commercialization.

Abstract:With the highest energy density ever among all sorts of commercialized rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have stimulated an upsurge utilization in 3C devices, electric vehicles, and stationary energy-storage systems. However, a high performance of commercial LIBs based on ethylene carbonate electrolytes and graphite anodes can only be achieved at above -20 °C, which restricts their applications in harsh environments. Here, a comprehensive research progress and in-depth understanding of the critical factors leading to the poor low-temperature performance of LIBs is provided; the distinctive challenges on the anodes, electrolytes, cathodes, and electrolyte-electrodes interphases are sorted out, with a special focus on Li-ion transport mechanism therein. Finally, promising strategies and solutions for improving low-temperature performance are highlighted to maximize the working-temperature range of the next-generation high-energy Li-ion/metal batteries.

Abstract:The fundamental issues and solutions in low‐temperature lithium metal batteries are comprehensively summarized from the perspective of the ion transport kinetics, which guide development direction of low‐temperature batteries toward practical applications. The deployment of rechargeable batteries is crucial for the operation of advanced portable electronics and electric vehicles under harsh environment. However, commercial lithium‐ion batteries using ethylene carbonate electrolytes suffer from severe loss in cell energy density at extremely low temperature. Lithium metal batteries (LMBs), which use Li metal as anode rather than graphite, are expected to push the baseline energy density of low‐temperature devices at the cell level. Albeit promising, the kinetic limitations of standard cell chemistries under subzero operation condition inevitably hamper the cyclability of LMBs, resulting in a severe decline in plating/stripping reversibility and short‐circuit hazards due to the dendritic growth. Such performance degradation becomes more pronounced with decreasing temperature, ascribing to sluggish ion transport kinetics during charging/discharging processes which includes Li+ solvation/desolvation, ion transport through bulk electrolyte, as well as ion diffusion within solid electrolyte interphase and bulk electrode materials at low temperature. In this review, the critical limiting factors and challenges for low‐temperature ion transport behaviors are systematically reviewed and discussed. The strategies to enhance Li+ transport kinetics in electrolytes, electrodes, and electrolyte/electrode interface are comprehensively summarized. Finally, perspective on future research direction of low‐temperature LMBs toward practical applications is proposed.

Abstract:Operation of Li-ion batteries below −20 °C is hindered by low electrolyte conductivity and sluggish solid-state diffusion in electrodes. Li metal anodes show promise for low-temperature operation, but few electrolyte compositions exhibit high conductivity at reduced temperature while also allowing Li electrodeposition/stripping with high Coulombic efficiency. Here, we show that the Coulombic efficiency of Li metal anodes can be substantially improved at low temperatures (−60 °C) by tailoring the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) structure through the use of two classes of electrolyte solvents: cyclic carbonates and ethers. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and other methods show that fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) induces temperature-dependent changes in the chemistry and structure of the SEI to be abundant with LiF and Li2CO3, while 17O nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular dynamics calculations show that FEC affects the solvation behavior and SEI formation process in this new electrolyte system. Abstract:Energy storage devices have been developed greatly in recent years. Developing forward, they are expected to operate stably in electric vehicles, electric grids, military equipment, and aerospaces in various climates. Unfortunately, these areas require batteries to be repeatedly and periodically exposed to sub-zero temperatures, even extremely low temperatures (−40 °C or lower). The low temperature reduces the kinetics of all the activation processes of the batteries, leading to increased impedance and polarization, and loss of battery energy and power, thus restricting their performance. Developing new cathode materials is one of the main strategies to alleviate the low-temperature restrictions. A conventional lithium-ion battery is the most attractive system, which is more adaptive to the practical low-temperature application now. Sodium-ion batteries, magnesium-ion batteries, and zinc-ion batteries, which have the advantages of low cost and high safety, are considered potential substitutes for lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical performance of these batteries at low-temperature has been conducted extensively. This review provides an overview of lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, magnesium-ion batteries, and zinc-ion batteries that can work normally in low-temperature environments, with emphasis on various high-energy cathode materials, mainly including polyanionic compounds, layered oxides, spinel oxides, Prussian blue, and Prussian blue analogs. Specifically, we propose how the conventional low-temperature charge-transfer resistance can be overcome. However, these chemistries also present their own unique challenges at low temperatures. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these materials, as well as the main challenges and strategies for applying them to batteries at low temperatures so that the batteries can still discharge efficiently.

Abstract:Lithium anode-based batteries (LBs) are highly demanded in society owing to the high theoretical capacity and low reduction potential of metallic lithium. They are expected to see increasing deployment in performance critical areas including electric vehicles, grid storage, space, and sea vehicle operations. Unfortunately, competitive performance cannot be achieved when LBs operating under extreme temperature conditions where the lithium-ion chemistry fail to perform optimally. In this review, a brief overview of the challenges in developing LBs for low temperature (<0 °C) and high temperature (>60 °C) operation are provided followed by electrolyte design strategies involving Li salt modification, solvation structure optimization, additive introduction, and solid-state electrolyte utilization for LBs are introduced. Specifically, the prospects of using lithium metal batteries (LMBs), lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries, and lithium oxygen (Li-O2) batteries for performance under low and high temperature applications are evaluated. These three chemistries are presented as prototypical examples of how the conventional low temperature charge transfer resistances and high temperature side reactions can be overcome. Tailoring electrolytes for Sn-based anodes toward Li storage at a low temperature of -50°C

Abstract:High-capacity storage in Li-ion batteries with graphite anodes remains a challenge at low temperature. By contrast, metal-based composite anode materials, including Sn metal, have shown good lithium storage capabilities at low temperature. However, the suitable low temperature electrolyte is still infancy to achieve high efficiency capacity of Sn-based anode in ultra-low temperature. Herein, a 2-methytetrahydrofuran (2Me-THF)-based low temperature electrolyte is proven to support the excellent lithium capability of Sn-based anode at ultra-low temperatures. The formulated 2Me-THF electrolyte exhibited small changes in viscosity and ionic conductivity with decreasing temperature. A SnO 2 -LiF-G (graphite) electrode with 1 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide-(2Me-THF) electrolyte maintained 80% of the room temperature reversible capacity at -30°C and delivered a reversible capacity of 650 mAh g −1 , even at -50°C, under a current density of 100 mA g −1 . Furthermore, a detailed characterization based on Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Time-of-flight Secondary ion Mass Spectrometry confirmed that the formed inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase on the electrode surface effectively maintained the solid-liquid interfacial stability at low temperature. This work provided design concepts for ultralow temperature electrolytes for metal-based anodes, which were especially helpful for further promoting batteries for low temperature applications.

Abstract:With the rapid development of electric power, lithium materials, as a rare metal material, will be used up in 50 years. Sodium, in the same main group as lithium in the periodic table, is abundant in earth's surface. However, in the study of sodium-ion batteries, there are still problems with their low-temperature performance. Its influencing factors mainly include three parts: cathode material, anode material, and electrolyte. In the cathode, there are Prussian blue and Prussian blue analogues, layered oxides, and polyanionic-type cathodes in four parts, as this paper discusses. However, in the anode, there is hard carbon, amorphous selenium, metal selenides, and the NaTi2(PO4)3 anode. Then, we divide the electrolyte into four parts: organic electrolytes; ionic liquid electrolytes; aqueous electrolytes; and solid-state electrolytes. Here, we aim to find electrode materials with a high specific capacity of charge and discharge at lower temperatures. Meanwhile, high-electrical-potential cathode materials and low-potential anode materials are also found. Furthermore, their stability in air and performance degradation in full cells and half-cells are analyzed. As for the electrolyte, despite the aspects mentioned above, its electrical conductivity in low temperatures is also reported.

Abstract:With the acceleration of technological progress, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become one of the indispensable forms of energy in modern life and play a crucial role. However, its performance degradation in low-temperature environments remains a key factor restricting its further development. In particular, as the core components of LIBs, the stability of electrodes and electrolytes at low temperatures directly determines the overall performance of the battery. Specifically, the fluidity of the electrolyte is significantly reduced at low temperatures, while lithium-ions at the negative electrode are more easily precipitated, leading to the formation of lithium dendrites, which together affect the safety and life of the battery. This paper systematically analyses the latest advances in structure regulation and design of anode materials and electrolytes through an in-depth study of the low-temperature stability of LIBs. Modification methods for these key materials are described in detail, including strategies for optimising electrolyte additives and their positive effects on enhancing battery performance at low temperatures. In addition, the article discusses potential directions for future research in this area, aiming to provide guidance and reference for improving the performance of LIBs for applications in low-temperature environments.

Abstract:The current research progress of cathode/anode materials of lithium ion batteries for low temperature use was reviewed.The low temperature performance of LiFePO4/C and LiCoO2 cathode material carbon and other anode materials were analyzed;the approaches of improving the low temperature performance were discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Abstract Among various rechargeable batteries, the lithium-ion battery (LIB) stands out due to its high energy density, long cycling life, in addition to other outstanding properties. However, the capacity of LIB drops dramatically at low temperatures (LTs) below 0 °C, thus restricting its applications as a reliable power source for electric vehicles in cold climates and equipment used in the aerospace. The electrolyte engineering has proved to be one of the most effective approaches to mitigate LIB performance degradation at LTs. In this review, we summarize the important factors contributing to the deterioration in Li + transport and capacity utilization at LTs while systematically categorize the solvents, salts and additives reported in the literature. Strategies to improve the Li + transport kinetics, in the bulk electrolyte and across the interphases, are discussed. In particular, the formation mechanism of solid electrolyte interphase and its functionality for LT electrolytes are analyzed. Perspectives on the future evolution of this area are also provided. Abstract:Lithium batteries have been widely used in various fields such as portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and grid storages devices. However, the low temperature-tolerant performances (-70 oC to 0 oC) of lithium batteries is still mainly hampered by low ionic conductivity of bulk electrolyte and interfacial issues. In general, there are four threats in developing low-temperature lithium batteries when using traditional carbonate-based electrolytes: 1) low ionic conductivity of bulk electrolyte, 2) increased resistance of solid electrolyte interface, 3) sluggish kinetics of charge transfer, 4) slow Li diffusion throughout bulk electrodes. Meanwhile, conventional electrolytes have been close to the upper limit of optimum low-temperature performance owing to their intrinsic molecular structural properties. As a result, it is urgent to design unconventional electrolytes with lower melting point and higher ionic conductivity. Herein, in this review, we overview the recent key advance in regard to unconventional electrolytes including fluorinated ester, ethyl acetate, gamma-butyrolactone, liquefied gas, ether, plastic crystal and aqueous electrolytes. We focus on solvation structure modification and solid electrolyte interphase optimization of unconventional electrolytes for low-temperature lithium batteries. Finally, aiming at the deficiencies in current understanding, we explore the inherent limitations and envision the future prospects of low-temperature lithium batteries.
