Abstract:The rapid development of wearable electronics has stimulated the urgent demand for compatible, miniaturized energy storage devices. As one of the most promising candidates, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have attracted significant attention, owing to their high power densities, long operation life, and fast charge/discharge rate. In comparison to conventional, rigid MSCs, deformable MSCs are attracting more and more attention for their superior tolerance to various deformations, including stretching, bending, and twisting, guaranteeing smooth operation of the wearable electronics. MXenes, a class of emerging two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides/nitrides, have metallic conductivity, high specific surface area, good hydrophilicity, and surface chemical tunability, showing great potential as electrode material for MSCs. In this paper, the recent progress, focused on the MXene-based, stretchable MSCs with fiber-shaped, planar configuration, is systematically summarized. Moreover, the key challenges and prospects of MXene-based, stretchable MSCs for practical application are discussed, which are critical for further development of them.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop compatible and miniaturized energy storage devices suitable for wearable electronic devices, especially stretchable micro - supercapacitors (MSCs). With the rapid development of flexible, portable, and wearable electronic products, the demand for such compatible and miniaturized energy storage devices has become more and more urgent. Micro - supercapacitors have attracted wide attention due to their high - power density, long service life, and fast charge - discharge rate. However, traditional rigid micro - supercapacitors perform poorly in the face of deformations such as stretching, bending, and twisting, which limits their application in wearable electronic products. Therefore, this paper focuses on the research progress of stretchable micro - supercapacitors based on MXene materials. MXene is a new class of two - dimensional transition - metal carbides/nitrides, which has metallic conductivity, a high specific surface area, good hydrophilicity, and tunable surface chemistry, showing great potential as electrode materials for micro - supercapacitors. Specifically, the paper summarizes the research progress of fiber - shaped and planar MXene - based stretchable micro - supercapacitors in recent years, and discusses the key challenges and prospects for their practical applications, which are crucial for the further development of MXene - based stretchable micro - supercapacitors. These problems include how to improve the stability of MXene sheets, prevent their restacking, and how to design and manufacture stretchable and flexible MXene - based electrode materials while maintaining excellent electrochemical performance.
