Neutrino Emissions from Tidal Disruption Remnants

Abstract:We study high-energy neutrino emissions from tidal disruption remnants (TDRs) around supermassive black holes. The neutrinos are produced by the decay of charged pions originating in ultrarelativistic protons that are accelerated there. In the standard theory of tidal disruption events (TDEs), there are four distinct phases from debris circularization of stellar debris to super- and sub-Eddington to radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs). In addition, we consider the magnetically arrested disk (MAD) state in both the super-Eddington accretion and RIAF phases. We find that there are three promising cases to produce neutrino emissions: the super-Eddington accretion phase of the MAD state and the RIAF phases of both the non-MAD and MAD states. In the super-Eddington MAD state, the enhanced magnetic field makes it possible to accelerate the protons to $E_{p,max}~0.35 PeV (M_bh/10^{7.7}M_\odot)^{41/48}$ with the other given appropriate parameters. The neutrino energy is then $E_{\nu,pk}~67 TeV (M_bh/10^{7.7}M_\odot)^{41/48}$ at the peak of the energy spectrum. For $M_bh\gtrsim10^{7.7} M_\odot$, the neutrino light curve is proportional to $t^{-65/24}$, while it follows the standard $t^{-5/3}$ decay rate for $M_bh<10^{7.7} M_\odot$. In both cases, the large luminosity and characteristic light curves diagnose the super-Eddington MAD state in TDEs. In the RIAF phase of the non-MAD state, we find $E_{p, max}~0.45 PeV (M_bh/10^7M_\odot)^{5/3}$ and $E_{\nu,pk}~0.35 PeV (M_bh/10^7M_\odot)^{5/3}$, and its light curve is proportional to $t^{-10/3}$. This indicates that one can identify whether the existing RIAFs are the TDE origin or not. TDRs are potentially a population of hidden neutrino sources invisible in gamma rays.

Abstract:Stars can be tidally disrupted when passing near a black hole, and the debris can induce a flux of high-energy neutrinos. It has been discussed that there are hints in IceCube data of high-energy neutrinos produced in Tidal Disruption Events. The emitting region of neutrinos and photons in these astrophysical events is likely to be located in the vicinity of the central black hole, where the dark matter density might be significantly larger than in the outer regions of the galaxy. We explore the potential attenuation of the emitted neutrino and photon fluxes due to interactions with dark matter particles around the supermassive black hole of the host galaxies of AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr and AT2019aalc, and study the implications for some well-motivated models of dark matter-neutrino and dark matter-photon interactions. Furthermore, we discuss the complementarity of our constraints with values of the dark matter-neutrino scattering cross section proven to alleviate some cosmological tensions.

Multi-messenger Observations of Tidal Disruption Events

Abstract:Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and other observatories, we have identified three candidate Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) in spatial and temporal coincidence with high-energy neutrinos detected by IceCube: AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr and AT2019aalc. All three of these events have been shown to be able to produce high-energy neutrinos. In these proceedings, I will give an overview of Tidal Disruption Events, outline our follow-up program with ZTF, describe the observations carried out for each of those coincident events and highlight their similarities and differences.

Abstract:Tidal disruptions are extremely powerful phenomena that have been designated as candidate sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The disruption of a star by a black hole can naturally provide protons and heavier nuclei, which can be injected and accelerated to ultra-high energies within a jet. Inside the jet, accelerated nuclei are likely to interact with a dense photon field, leading to a significant production of neutrinos and secondary particles. We model numerically the propagation and interactions of high-energy nuclei in jetted tidal disruption events in order to evaluate consistently their signatures in cosmic rays and neutrinos. We propose a simple model of the light curve of tidal disruption events, consisting of two stages: a high state with bright luminosity and short duration and a medium state, less bright and longer lasting. These two states have different impacts on the production of cosmic rays and neutrinos. In order to calculate the diffuse fluxes of cosmic rays and neutrinos, we model the luminosity function and redshift evolution of jetted tidal disruption events. We find that we can fit the latest ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray spectrum and composition results of the Auger experiment for a range of reasonable parameters. The diffuse neutrino flux associated with this scenario is found to be subdominant, but nearby events can be detected by IceCube or next-generation detectors such as IceCube-Gen2.

Probing the Tidal Disruption Flares of Massive Black Holes with High-Energy Neutrinos

Abstract:The recently discovered high-energy transient Swift J164449.3+573451 (Sw J1644+57) is thought to arise from the tidal disruption of a passing star by a dormant massive black hole. Modeling of the broadband emission suggests the presence of a powerful relativistic jet, which contributes dominantly to the observed X-ray emission. Here we suggest that protons can be accelerated to ultra-high energies by internal shocks occurring in the jets, but their flux is insufficient to account for the observed flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. High energy protons can produce ~0.1-10 PeV neutrinos through photomeson interactions with X-ray photons. The large X-ray fluence (7x10^-4 erg cm^-2) and high photopion efficiency, together with the insignificant cooling of secondary mesons, result in bright neutrino emission expected from Sw J1644+57 if the jet composition is matter-dominated. One to several neutrinos may be detected by a Km^3-scale detector from one tidal disruption event similar to Sw J1644+57, thereby providing a powerful probe of the composition of the jets.
A neutrino flare associated with X-ray emission from TDE ATLAS17jrp

Abstract:Tidal disruption events (TDEs), where stars are captured or tidally disrupted by supermassive black holes, are potential sources of high-energy neutrinos. We report the discovery of a potential neutrino flare that is spatially and temporally associated with X-ray emission from TDE ATLAS17jrp. The best-fit spectrum of the neutrino flare follows a power-law with an index of $\rm{\gamma=2.7\pm0.4}$ and a flux normalization of $\rm{\Phi_0 =1.7^{+6.3}_{-1.5}\times 10^{-18}\;GeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$ at 100 TeV based on an analysis of 10-year track data from IceCube, and the flare duration is 61 days. We calculate that the probability of this association occurring by chance is $0.17\%$. Therefore, ATLAS17jrp is the second TDE (not including candidates) associated with high-energy neutrinos, following TDE AT2019dsg associated with an IceCube neutrino alert. This association can be attributed to the interaction of X-ray photons produced by the hot corona with high-energy particles accelerated by disk winds or outflows, resulting in the production of neutrinos.

Choked Jets in Expanding Envelope as the Origin of the Neutrino Emission Associated with Tidal Disruption Events

Abstract:Three tidal disruption event (TDE) candidates (AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr, AT2019aalc) have been found to be coincident with high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in multimessenger follow-ups. Recent studies suggest the presence of a quasi-spherical, optically thick envelope around the supermassive black holes in TDEs, resulted from stellar debris after the disruption. The envelope may expand outwardly with a velocity of ∼10 4 km s −1 , as indicated by the emission line widths. We study whether the neutrino signal can be explained by choked relativistic jets inside the expanding envelope. While powerful jets, such as that in Swift J1644+57, can successfully break out from the envelope, those with relatively weak power could be choked by the envelope. Choked jets can still accelerate cosmic rays and produce high-energy neutrinos via interaction with the thermal photons in the envelope. We explore the parameter space of the jets that can produce detectable neutrino flux while being choked in the expanding envelope. We find that the cumulative neutrino numbers of AT2019fdr and AT2019aalc are consistent with the expected range imposed by observations, while the allowed parameter space for AT2019dsg is small. The neutrino time delay relative to the optical peak time of TDEs can be explained as the jet propagation time in the envelope before being choked. The discovery of TDE-associated neutrino events may suggest that jets might have been commonly formed in TDEs, as expected from super-Eddington accretion, but most of them are too weak to break out from the expanding envelopes.

AT2021lwx: Another Neutrino-Coincident Tidal Disruption Event with a Strong Dust Echo?

Abstract:We discuss the possible association of an astrophysical neutrino (IC220405B) with the recently reported, extremely energetic tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate AT2021lwx (ZTF20abrbeie, aka ``Scary Barbie'') at redshift $z=0.995$. Although the TDE is about $2.6^\circ$ off the direction of the reconstructed neutrino event (outside the 90% confidence level localization region), the TDE candidate shares some important characteristics with so far reported neutrino-TDE associations: a strong infrared dust echo, high bolometric luminosity, a neutrino time delay with respect to the peak mass accretion rate of the order of hundred days, and a high observed X-ray luminosity. We interpret this new association using an isotropic emission model, where neutrinos are produced by the collision of accelerated protons with infrared photons. After accounting for the high redshift of AT2021lwx (by interpreting the data in the SMBH frame), we find that the expected neutrino fluences and neutrino time delays are qualitatively comparable to the other TDEs. Since data are only available up to 300 days post-peak in the SMBH frame, significant uncertainties exist in the dust echo interpretation, and therefore in the predicted number of neutrinos detected, $\mathcal N_{\nu}\simeq3.0\times10^{-3}-0.012$. We recommend further follow-up on this object for an extended period and suggest refining the reconstruction of the neutrino arrival direction in this particular case.

Electromagnetic Cascade Emission from Neutrino-Coincident Tidal Disruption Events

Abstract:The potential association between Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) and high-energy astrophysical neutrinos implies the acceleration of cosmic rays. These accelerated particles will initiate electromagnetic (EM) cascades spanning from keV to GeV energies by the processes related to neutrino production. We model the EM cascade and neutrino emissions by numerically solving the time-dependent transport equations and discuss the implications for AT2019dsg and AT2019fdr in the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray bands. We show that the $\gamma$-ray constraints from \emph{Fermi} can constrain the size of the radiation zone and the maximum energy of injected protons, and that the corresponding expected neutrino event numbers in follow-up searches are limited to be less than about 0.1. Depending on the efficiency of $p\gamma$ interactions, the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray signals can be expected closer to the peak of the optical-ultraviolet (OUV) luminosity, or to the time of the neutrino production.

Abstract:Nuclear star clusters (NSCs), made up of a dense concentration of stars and the compact objects they leave behind, are ubiquitous in the central regions of galaxies surrounding the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Close interactions between stars and stellar-mass black holes (sBHs) lead to tidal disruption events (TDEs). We uncover an interesting new phenomenon: for a subset of these, the unbound debris (to the sBH) remains bound to the SMBH, accreting at a later time, thus giving rise to a second flare. We compute the rate of such events and find them ranging within 10 −6 –10 −3 yr −1 gal −1 for SMBH mass ≃10 6 –10 9 M ⊙ . Time delays between the two flares spread over a wide range, from less than a year to hundreds of years. The temporal evolution of the light curves of the second flare can vary between the standard t −5/3 power law to much steeper decays, providing a natural explanation for observed light curves in tension with the classical TDE model. Our predictions have implications for learning about NSC properties and calibrating its sBH population. Some double flares may be electromagnetic counterparts to LISA extreme-mass-ratio inspiral sources. Another important implication is the possible existence of TDE-like events in very massive SMBHs, where TDEs are not expected. Such flares can affect spin measurements relying on TDEs in the upper SMBH range.

Search for Gamma-ray Emission from Accretion Flares of Tidal Disruption Events Possibly Associated with the IceCube Neutrinos

Abstract:Outflows or disk-coronas generated in tidal disruption events (TDEs) of supermassive black holes have been suggested as possible sites of high-energy neutrinos. Three TDEs (AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr and AT2019aalc) have been claimed to be associated with high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in multi-messenger follow-ups. No GeV photons have been detected accompanying the neutrino for the three sources. In this work, we searched for the high-energy gamma-ray emission from a larger sample of TDE candidates observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). No significant GeV emission was observed, and the upper limits of the gamma-ray emission flux are reported. We then performed a stacking analysis for the sample sources and found that the collective gamma-ray emission of this class of sources was also not bright enough to be detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). The nondetection of the high-energy gamma-ray emission from the sample TDEs could be due to the fact that the high-energy gamma rays are absorbed by soft photons in the source. Using a model-based hypothesis, the upper limit on the emission radius of the neutrino production is obtained for these TDEs: R<1016 cm for typical TDE parameter values.
Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays from Neutrino-Emitting Tidal Disruption Events

Abstract:We revisit the Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECRs) production in Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) in the light of recent neutrino-TDE associations. We use an isotropically emitting source-propagation model, which has been developed to describe the neutrino production in AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr, and AT2019aalc. These TDEs have strong dust echoes in the infrared range, which are potentially linked with the neutrino production. A mechanism where neutrinos originate from cosmic ray scattering on infrared photons implies cosmic rays in the ultra-high energy range, thus suggesting a natural connection with the observed UHECR. We extrapolate the three TDE associations to a population of neutrino- and UHECR-emitting TDEs, and postulate that these TDEs power the UHECRs. We then infer the source composition, population parameters, and local rates that are needed to describe UHECR data. We find that UHECR data point towards a mix of light to mid-heavy injection isotopes, which could be found, e.g., in oxygen-neon-magnesium white dwarfs, and to a contribution of at least two groups of TDEs with different characteristics, dominated by AT2019aalc-type events. The required local TDE rates of ${\mathcal O}(10^2)~\mathrm{Gpc^{-3} \, yr^{-1}}$, however, are more indicative of the disruption of main sequence stars. We propose an enhanced efficiency in the acceleration of heavier nuclei that could address this discrepancy. The predicted diffuse neutrino fluxes suggest a population of astrophysical neutrino sources that can be observed by future radio neutrino detection experiments.

Neutrino Diffusion within Dark Matter Spikes

Abstract:Multi-messenger observations of astrophysical transients provide powerful probes of the underlying physics of the source as well as beyond the Standard Model effects. We explore transients that can occur in the vicinity of supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies, including tidal disruption events (TDEs), certain types of blazars, or even supernovae. In such environments, the dark matter (DM) density can be extremely high, resembling a dense spike or core. We study a novel effect of neutrino diffusion sustained via frequent scatterings off DM particles in these regions. We show that for transients occurring within DM spikes or cores, the DM-neutrino scattering can delay the arrival of neutrinos with respect to photons, but this also comes with a suppression of the neutrino flux and energy loss. We apply these effects to the specific example of TDEs, and demonstrate that currently unconstrained parameter space of DM-neutrino interactions can account for the sizable $O$(days) delay of the tentative high-energy neutrinos observed from some TDEs.

High-energy neutrino emission from tidal disruption event outflow-cloud interactions

Abstract:Tidal disruption events (TDEs), characterized by their luminous transients and high-velocity outflows, have emerged as plausible sources of high-energy neutrinos contributing to the diffuse neutrino. In this study, we calculate the contribution of TDEs to the diffuse neutrino by employing the outflow-cloud model within the TDE framework. Our analysis indicates that the contribution of TDEs becomes negligible when the redshift Z exceeds 2. Employing a set of fiducial values, which includes outflow energy Ekin=1051 erg , a proton spectrum cutoff energy Ep,max=100 PeV , a volume TDE rate N ̇=8×10−7 Mpc−3 year−1 , covering fraction of clouds CV=0.1 , energy conversion efficiency in the shock η=0.1 , and a proton spectrum index Γ=−1.7 , we find that TDEs can account for approximately 80% of the contribution at energies around 0.3 PeV. Additionally, TDEs still contribute around 18% to the IceCube data below 0.1 PeV and the total contribution is ∼24−15+2% . In addition, we also discuss the potential influence of various parameter values on the results in detail. With the IceCube data, we impose constraints on the combination of the physical parameters, i.e., Cf=N ̇EkinCvη . Two Candidate Obscured Tidal Disruption Events Coincident with High-energy Neutrinos

Abstract:Recently, three optical tidal disruption event (TDE) candidates discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) have been suggested to be coincident with high-energy neutrinos. They all exhibit unusually strong dust infrared (IR) echoes, with their peak times matching the neutrino arrival time even better than the optical peaks. We hereby report on two new TDE candidates that are spatially and temporally coincident with neutrinos by matching our sample of mid-infrared outbursts in nearby galaxies (MIRONG) with Gold alerts of IceCube high-energy neutrino events up to June 2022. The two candidates show negligible optical variability according to their ZTF light curves and can therefore be classified as part of the growing population of obscured TDE candidates. The chance probability of finding two such candidates about $\sim3\%$ by redistributing the MIRONG sources randomly in the SDSS footprint, which will be as low as $\sim0.1\%$ (or $\sim0.2\%$) if we limit to sources with increased fluxes (or variability amplitudes) comparable with the matched two sources. Our findings further support the potential connection between high-energy neutrinos and TDEs in dusty environments by increasing the total number of neutrino-associated TDE and TDE candidates to five, although the underlying physics remains poorly understood.

Neutrino follow-up with the Zwicky Transient Facility: Results from the first 24 campaigns

Abstract:The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) performs a systematic neutrino follow-up program, searching for optical counterparts to high-energy neutrinos with dedicated Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) observations. Since first light in March 2018, ZTF has taken prompt observations for 24 high-quality neutrino alerts from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, with a median latency of 12.2 hours from initial neutrino detection. From two of these campaigns, we have already reported tidal disruption event (TDE) AT 2019dsg and likely TDE AT 2019fdr as probable counterparts, suggesting that TDEs contribute >7.8% of the astrophysical neutrino flux. We here present the full results of our program through to December 2021. No additional candidate neutrino sources were identified by our program, allowing us to place the first constraints on the underlying optical luminosity function of astrophysical neutrino sources. Transients with optical absolutes magnitudes brighter that $-21$ can contribute no more than 87% of the total, while transients brighter than $-22$ can contribute no more than 58% of the total, neglecting the effect of extinction and assuming they follow the star formation rate. These are the first observational constraints on the neutrino emission of bright populations such as superluminous supernovae. None of the neutrinos were coincident with bright optical AGN flares comparable to that observed for TXS 0506+056/IC170922A, with such optical blazar flares producing no more than 26% of the total neutrino flux. We highlight the outlook for electromagnetic neutrino follow-up programs, including the expected potential for the Rubin Observatory.

Abstract:Abstract Recent radio observations and coincident neutrino detections suggest that some tidal disruption events (TDEs) exhibit late-time activities, relative to the optical ehmission peak, and these may be due to delayed outflows launched from the central supermassive black hole. We investigate te possibility that jets launched with a time delay of days to months, interact with a debris that may expand outwards. We discuss the effects of the time delay and expansion velocity on the outcomes of jet breakout and collimation. We find that a jet with an isotropic-equivalent luminosity of ≲ 5 × 1045 erg/s is likely to be choked for a delay time of ∼3 months. We also study the observational signatures of such delayed choked jets. The jet-debris interaction preceding the breakout would lead to particle acceleration and the resulting synchrotron emission can be detected by current and near-future radio, optical and X-ray telescopes, and the expanding jet-driven debris could explain late-time radio emission. We discuss high-energy neutrino production in delayed choked jets, and the time delay can significantly alleviate the difficulty of the hidden jet scenario in explaining neutrino coincidences.
