Abstract:Gas bubbles are a powerful tool with applications in particle visualization, spacers, actuation pistons, and pressure sensors. Controlling the transportation of bubbles in the liquid phase is a challenge that needs to be solved in many industrial processes, such as in the pipe transportation of fluids, the corrosion of ocean vessels, and the control of foaming processes. There are few existing materials capable of the antibuoyancy unidirectional transportation of bubbles. Here, a Janus superwetting mesh is fabricated by integrating aerophilic (AL) and superaerophobic (SAB) surfaces. The resulting composite mesh achieves underwater bubble antibuoyancy unidirectional penetration. In aqueous solution, bubbles pass through the mesh from the SAB side to the AL side, but are blocked from passing through in the opposite direction. This Janus mesh can be considered to be a bubble diode, so is convenient for use in underwater bubble unidirectional transportation. This work may promote the development of advanced materials for gas bubble directional transportation and separation in aqueous media.

Abstract:Janus membranes with superwetting play an important role in many fields, such as oil/water separation, unidirectional fluid transportation, microfluidic devices, intelligent ion valve, mass/heat transfer applications, etc. Although there has been some progress in the preparation of the Janus membranes with unidirectional penetration, it still remains a great difficulty for facile fabrication of two dimensional Janus membranes with a large pore structure and stable bubble unidirectional transport in the water. Herein, a signal-layer Janus membrane with superwetting is fabricated via the method of liquid-regulated hydrophobic modification strategy. The resultant Janus mesh achieves underwater unidirectional penetration. Namely, Underwater bubbles can pass unidirectionally from superhydrophobic side to hydrophilic side, but are blocked from passing through in the opposite direction. Thus, this Janus membrane with the unidirectional underwater bubbles penetration "diode" performance. We believe this work can promote the development of multi-dimensional Janus materials for fluid directional transport.

Abstract:Inspired by natural creatures, bubble manipulation by surface microstructures in aqueous media has attracted great attention due to its promising applications in industrial production. Herein, a superhydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus aluminum membrane with tapered micropore arrays was fabricated by femtosecond laser drilling, surface fluorination, and subsequent fluorination removal. Compared with the single interception or penetration of double-faced hydrophilic or superhydrophobic membranes, the Janus membrane showed a distinctive unidirectional air bubble transport ability. In experiment, the air bubbles introduced on the lower hydrophilic surface could spontaneously move to the upper superhydrophobic surface, but they were prevented in the inverse direction. The dynamic process of unidirectional transport was in-situ monitored, and the physical mechanism was systemically investigated. In addition, the concepts of air-participating chemical/physical processes were demonstrated such as discoloration of purple litmus solution by CO2 injection, which proved the Janus membrane practicability. Abstract:Recently, Janus membranes with particular ability in unidirectional water permeation, known as “water diode”, have attracted increased attention. However, almost all existing Janus membranes are focused on controlling water permeation in air, similar membranes can work in complicated environments, such as oil, are still quite unusual, let alone with smart controllability. Herein, we report a TiO2 nanostructures coated mesh membrane. The membrane’s surface wettability can be reversibly switched between uniformly underoil superhydrophobicity and Janus underoil hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity as unilateral UV irradiation and heating are alternately carried out, consequently, on/off control of water permeation between blocking state and unidirectional penetrating state can be realized. Moreover, by controlling the size of the region irradiated by UV light for 50 min, penetrating channels with controlled size can be designed. Based on this advantage, different independent penetrating channels with diameter from 2 mm to 10 mm can be obtained, and precise control of water permeation flux from 48,432 Lm−2h−1 to 70,553 Lm−2h−1 can be achieved. Finally, based on the excellent controllability, some significant applications such as the removal of water from oil, underoil multichannel chemical reaction, and droplet pumping were also demonstrated. This work reports a new membrane with smart underoil water permeation controllability, given its controllability and particular wetting performance, it is potentially used in many fields, for example, oil purification, droplet manipulation, and microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Despite their notable unidirectional water transport capabilities, Janus membranes are commonly challenged by the fragility of their chemical coatings and the clogging of open microchannels. Here, an on-demand mode-switching strategy is presented to consider the Janus functionality and mechanical durability separately and implement them by simply stretching and releasing the membrane. The stretching Janus mode facilitates unidirectional liquid flow through the hydrophilic micropores-microgrooves channels (PG channels) fabricated by femtosecond laser. The releasing protection mode is designed for the in-situ closure of the PG channels upon encountering external abrasion and impact. The protection mode imparts the Janus membrane robustness to reserve water unidirectional penetration under harsh conditions, such as 2000 cycles mechanical abrasion, 10 days exposure in air and other rigorous tests (sandpaper abrasion, finger rubbing, sand impact and tape peeling). The underlying mechanism of gridded grooves in protecting and enhancing water flow is unveiled. The Janus membrane serves as a fog collector to demonstrate its unwavering mechanical durability in harsh real-world conditions. The presented design strategy could open up new possibilities of Janus membrane in a multitude of applications ranging from multiphase separation devices to fog harvesting and wearable health-monitoring patches.

Abstract:A facile “plug-and-go” strategy for the fabrication of Janus membranes (JMs) is proposed that uses different combinational substrates with opposite wettability, and some suitable substrates are tightly integrated through a certain pressure. The excellent compactness and controllability of the optimal JMs using foam Ni and superhydrophilic Cu mesh are demonstrated in multifunctional applications, including unidirectional liquid transportation in air–water systems, on-demand immiscible oil–water separation, droplet collection in liquid–liquid systems, and on–off switch control. The dual function of the resulting JMs as water and oil diodes is attributed to the interpenetrating structure and similar thicknesses of the formed hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers, which minimize the penetration distance of the Janus membrane in both directions. This strategy provides a common route for the fabrication of novel composite materials with greater diversity and composability regarding membrane pore size and thickness.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Manipulation of bubbles underwater is attracting a wide range of interests due to the immense potential applications for industry, human health, etc. Inspired by superaerophilic legs of the water strider, a unique type of superaerophilic/aerophobic Janus membrane with precisely controllable geometric parameters and morphologies for unidirectional transportation of bubbles underwater is proposed and fabricated by projection micro-stereolithography (P μ SL) based 3D printing technique. The bionic Janus membranes possess different wettability on their two sides, which enables them stable and ultra-fast unidirectional bubbles transportation underwater. The superhydrophobic microholes forbid the water entering them but provide numerous gas channels, which is dominated by the superaerophilic coating (nano-SiO 2 ). Most significantly, we apply our bionic Janus membranes for the ultra-fast removal of hydrogen bubbles adhering to the copper cathode during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The amazing performance of our 3D printed bionic Janus membranes promises applications in terms of ultra-fast unidirectional gas transportation underwater, such as fast gas–liquid separation, bubble collection, gas removal for chemical reaction, and so on.

Abstract:Achieving the unidirectional transportation of bubbles in the liquid phase is of great importance for solving both academic and industrial issues. Here, Janus (hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces) microhole‐arrayed polydimethylsiloxane fabricated by one‐step femtosecond laser drilling for ultrafast underwater bubble unidirectional transportation is reported. In aqueous solution, bubbles selectively penetrate from an aerophilic side to a superaerophilic one in the direction of both buoyancy and antibuoyancy, but are blocked in a reverse direction. More importantly, the bubbles readily penetrate through this Janus system within 81 ms, which is two orders of magnitude shorter than that of a previous Janus one because the aerophilic surface of current Janus system is more favorable for capturing and transporting the bubble than the superaerophobic surface of Janus system. Additionally, this "diode" presents a switchable property, which is dependent on the laser exposure dosage. According to X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectrum, the underlying mechanism is that the excessive laser exposure dosage is inclined to induce the graft of oxyhydryl group as the substitution of the original hydrocarbyl group. This work may provide an innovatory insight for designing advanced materials for ultrafast gas bubble directional transportation/collection in aqueous media, in addition to gas/liquid separation.

Abstract:Traditional preparation methods of Janus membranes are either too complicated or cannot accurately control their characters such as surface wettability, layer thickness, and pore structure. Herein, asymmetric wettability and layer thickness on the copper mesh were successfully regulated by an interface-confined surface engineering strategy and applied for liquid manipulation. Water droplets can spontaneously infiltrate from the superhydrophobic side to the superhydrophilic side of the as-prepared Janus copper mesh (JCM), achieving unidirectional transportation. Besides, the separation efficiency of the JCM exceeds 99.2%, whether it is a combination of light or heavy oil-water mixtures. Moreover, compared to the corresponding superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic meshes, the JCM showed a 200% increase in fog collection. A fog collector with a sandwich structure was further developed, making up of a superhydrophilic inner layer and double-deck superhydrophobic external layers that always play a role of a Janus collector to allow a continuous and high-performance fog harvesting regardless of the direction of the fog flow. Overall, this work provides a new idea in the fabrication of Janus membranes, which could be extended to the transport of directional water, switchable oil/water separation, fog collection, and other fields.

Abstract:Reliable manipulation of gaseous bubbles in aqueous media has spurred considerable research interest in recent years due to the tremendous potential ranging from water treatment, catalytic reactions to resource exploration and liquid medicine transportation. However, facile and effective manufacture of functional devices for bubble manipulation is still in great demand. Here, a versatile integrated femtosecond laser-assisted ablation and nanoparticles deposition (FLAND) approach is proposed to obtain Janus organic membranes having mesoscale pore arrays for unidirectional transportation of underwater bubbles. Selective silica nanoparticles deposition occurs simultaneously with laser ablation, enabling superaerophilic/superaerophobic Janus membranes without toxic chemical treatment and rigorous bonding. The FLAND method is capable of controlling the wettability of the pore channel, which is revealed to play a crucial role in the bubble penetration behavior. Analogous to an electrical diode, underwater unidirectional penetration of bubbles is demonstrated for gas-related implementations. This fabrication system with an identical femtosecond laser for simultaneous ablation and nanoparticles deposition manifests simplicity and versatility, opening up more possibilities in manufacturing functional surfaces for various applications.

Abstract:Achieving the dynamic control of underwater gas bubbles (UGBs) on smart surfaces has aroused great attention for academic research and industrial applications. To date, developing a kind of stimuli‐responsive porous membrane with asymmetric wettability which can be reversibly switched between Janus and non‐Janus systems, unfortunately, has been rarely demonstrated. Here, a light/temperature‐responsive Janus tapered‐hole arrayed zinc foil (TAZF) is unfolded by combining one‐step laser drilling and a subsequent heating which is successfully utilized for underwater bubble unidirectional transport, that is, bubble "diode." Moreover, this TAZF can reversibly switch between Janus architecture and double‐faced aerophobic by applying alternative heating and UV dispositions for selectively capturing or repelling bubbles. The underlying mechanism revealed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectrums is that the reversible graft and removal of hydroxyl (OH) on the top surface of TAZF dominates the wettability conversion. The quantitative relationship among the UV and heating time and the water contact angle and the underwater bubble contact angle (UGBCA) is also studied. This work provides insight for designing smart surfaces applicable in fast bubble capture, transportation, collection, and gas/liquid separation.

Abstract:Underwater bubble dynamics and manipulation have emerged as an important research hotspot for boiling heat transfer, as well as bubble transport and collection. However, achieving switchable and controllable penetration of bubbles remains a challenge. In this work, by using laser etching and post-modification, Janus meshes with four pore sizes ranging from micron to millimeter sizes were prepared for unidirectional penetration of bubbles. Although typical unidirectional penetration was observed in these Janus meshes of four pore sizes, they all exhibit easy passage of bubbles without the desired controllable and switchable properties for penetration behaviors. The Janus mesh (with a pore size of ∼930 μm) is respectively superimposed with hydrophilic meshes of different pore sizes as integrated meshes. Interestingly, the integrated meshes take a penetration behavior transition of the bubbles from prohibited to a critical state, and easy permeation by changing the pore size and thickness of the hydrophilic mesh. The controllable permeability of the integrated mesh is attributed to different levels of resistance (i.e., the gas pressure at the upper interface, P up ) before acquiring a Laplace pressure. The integrated mesh can function as a bubble switch, offering a flexible and effective strategy for controllable penetration of underwater bubbles.

Abstract:The characteristics of the directed transport of liquids based on Janus membranes play a crucial role in practical applications in energy, materials, physics, chemistry, medicine, biology, and other fields. Although extensive progress has been made, it is still difficult to realize the accurate controllability of liquid directional transmembrane transport. The current gating strategies for the directed transport of liquids based on Janus membranes still have some limitations: (a) using magnetic fluid may cause contamination due to the addition of new substances and (b) utilizing hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity conversion of titanium dioxide requires a long switching time (over 30 min). Herein, a strategy is proposed to precisely control liquid directional transport by altering the wettability of droplets on Janus films prepared by a femtosecond laser through photothermal effects. Infrared laser irradiation on Janus film coated with CNTs can effectively convert light energy into thermal energy, rapidly increase the surface temperature of Janus film, and change the wettability of the liquid on the film. Liquid transmembrane directional transport can be achieved within a few seconds without contaminating the transported liquid. The proposed gating strategy can enable the application of Janus membranes in various scenarios such as microchemical reactions, biological cell culture, and interface self-propulsion.

Abstract:Inspired by nature, Janus membranes with unidirectional liquid transport (ULT) were developed to be used in the fields of fog collection, moisture-wicking fabrics, demulsification, etc. However, the obtained Janus membranes are often unifunctional, and it is still a great challenge to adjust the ULT of Janus membranes for multifunctional applications. Herein, a scalable, low-cost, and machine-washable Janus membrane was developed by combining the cyclic self-assembly of phytic acid and FeIII and a one-side spraying coating of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), featuring adjustable ULT upon challenge for multifunctional applications. By controlling the amount of PDMS, the Janus membranes exhibit two different performances, ULT and switchable permeation. The prepared Janus membranes achieved an excellent moisture-wicking fabric (1.6× the water evaporation rate of cotton), fast water collection under oil, rapid demulsification, and the efficient separation of an oil/water mixture. The separation efficiency of a light or heavy oil from water was higher than 99.9% even after 10 separation cycles, and the flux of the separation was up to 2.55 × 104 or 2.38 × 104 L m-2 h-1, respectively. This study could provide an idea for the development of more Janus membranes with adjustable performances to realize multifunctional applications.
Robust Super-Amphiphobic Titanium Surface for Liquid/Liquid Mini Separations

Abstract:Super-amphiphobic surface with low robustness is not suitable for practical application due to its weak mechanical strength. In this work, an in-site growth of micro-/nanoscale flower-like TiO2 on the surface of a titanium mesh was successfully fabricated through hydrothermal synthesis, followed by chemical modification with low-surface-energy heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrodecyl trichlorosilane. The resultant super-amphiphobic coating was highly repellent to all of the ethanol–water mixtures with surface tensions ranging over 26.0–72.8 mN/m, as well as excellent chemical and mechanical durability. After it was irradiated for 8 h with ultraviolet light, it was used for oil/water and oil/oil mini-separation with the help of its Janus characteristic. This was attributed to its unidirectional penetration for liquid droplets with different surface tension values. This kind of smart super-amphiphobic mesh with photochemical activity could potentially gate and sort liquids via surface tensions.

Abstract:Manipulating gas bubbles in aqueous ambient is of great importance for applications in water treatment, gas collection, and matter transport. Here, a kind of Janus foam is designed and fabricated by one-step ultrafast laser ablation of one side of the copper film, which is treated to be superhydrophobic. Janus foam exhibits not only the capability of unidirectional transport of underwater bubbles but also gas collection with favorable efficiency up to ∼15 mL cm-2 min-1. The underlying physical mechanism is attributed to the cooperation of the buoyancy, adhesion, and wetting gradient forces imposed on the bubbles. As a paradigm, the underwater chemical reaction between the unidirectional CO2 gas flow and the alkaline phenolphthalein solution is demonstrated via Janus foam. This facile and low-cost fabrication approach for Janus foam will find broad potential applications in effective bubble transport, carbon capture, and controllable chemical reactions under aqueous conditions.

The advances in fabrication technology and natural bionics have brought remarkable progress for the development of Janus materials. Among the exciting progress, the micro/nanofabrication technique of electrospinning shows advantages in constructing thin porous fibrous membrane materials with controllable surface wettability and hierarchical structures. Here, a brief review of bioinspired Janus membrane for unidirectional liquid penetration fabricated by electrospinning is presented, and the underlying scientific mechanism is discussed with an emphasis on the materials design involving asymmetric surface wettability and micro-topology structure. An overview of recent emerging applications is also reviewed, with special attentions to liquid separation, water collection, distillation, and smart textile, etc. As researchers keep to develop more efficient strategies on designing new Janus membrane with higher performances, it has become increasingly important to understand the mechanism of liquid moving dynamics at the asymmetric interface in order to better recognize the scientific limitations currently hindering the field development. At last, the challenges currently faced and possible strategies on developing new Janus membranes for optimization and engineering in the future are proposed.

Abstract:Janus membrane (JM) with asymmetric surface wettability on opposite two surfaces has demonstrated high application potential on the oil/water separation process due to its unique unidirectional water permeation property. In this study, a novel Janus membrane was prepared by electrospinning a thin layer of silica nanoparticle doped poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) nanofibers (PVDF-HFP/SiO2) on the surface of superhydrophilic polyamine (PDA) coated Cu@Cu(OH)2 mesh. The thickness and compactness of the nanofiber layer could be controlled by varying the electrospinning time, in which the water contact angle (WCA) value of the hydrophobic layer and critical water breakthrough column height of the membrane were able to be optimized. The Janus membrane (JM-5) with the electrospinning time of 5 min exhibited a large WCA difference of approximately 140°, achieving a spontaneous water permeation from the hydrophobic to hydrophilic direction but blocking the water flow in the reverse direction. The water flux of JM-5 membrane was estimated as 5305 L/m2.h only under the Laplace pressure. There is no obvious change in the WCA value of the JM-5 membrane observed when the membrane was employed in high saline solutions with a wide pH range of 1–13. The JM-5 membrane could maintain a stable water flux during the 6-cycle oil/water separation process. Such Janus membrane with the function of water diode could be potentially applied for the treatment of oily wastewater and other application fields, e.g., the water removal from oil-type solutions in chemical industry.

Abstract:The realization of the directional water transport function of Janus membrane is based on the formation of its asymmetric structure. Nevertheless, the persistent problems of unstable directional water transport and poor adhesion between membranes limit their application. In this paper, based on electrospinning, the copper mesh with an in-situ growth conical nanoneedle structure was innovatively selected as an imprint template, and the conical structure was imprinted between the blended TPU/PAN membrane and the PAN membrane to form a three-layer laminated composite membrane. The gradient unidirectional permeability Janus membrane was developed, which not only constructed an asymmetric hierarchical structure but also realized the progressive wetting function inside. The water absorption tests showed that the water storage capacity was as high as 2047.37% of its weight. Moreover, stable gas permeability could be achieved under 20 cm water column pressure when the gas flow rate was 0.05 kg/cm3. Importantly, the membrane exhibited ultra-stable unidirectional water transport under strong mechanical stimulation and prolonged gravity, which provided possibility for preparation of Janus membranes with high durability, strong mechanical damage resistance and good air permeability.
