Abstract:The ionospheric electron density is influenced by solar radiation and the Earth's atmosphere, with the impact factors broadly categorized into temporal and spatial features. This letter proposes a combined convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) model to predict the spatial variation of ionospheric election density. By front-loading the CNN in front of the LSTM model, both the time-permitting and the trend of the spatial features can be extracted simultaneously, improving the prediction performance. As an example, the electron density distribution in 2016 is used as the training set to predict the data in 2017. The results show that the maximum, minimum, and average root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of the CNN-LSTM model over a 12-month period were 0.036, 0.012, and 0.022, representing the improvements of 68.53%, 54.41%, and 69.55% compared to the single-layer, double-layer, and three-layer LSTM models, respectively. Meanwhile, 99% of the predicted results had values above 0.95. The excellent predictive performance of our model to multiple years demonstrates that the model has good generalization ability in predicting electron density profiles. This model can provide a new way for the prediction of electron density distribution in the ionosphere, which is crucial for remote sensing applications in shortwave communication, ionospheric monitoring, satellite communications, and navigation systems, as well as for understanding and mitigating the impact of space weather on these technologies.
