Abstract:We consider pion condensation in QCD at finite isospin density μI and zero temperature using two-flavor chiral perturbation theory ( χPT ). The pressure is calculated to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the low-energy expansion. In the nonrelativistic limit, we recover the classic result by Lee, Huang, and Yang for the energy density of a dilute Bose gas with an s -wave scattering length that includes loop corrections from χPT . In the chiral limit, higher-order calculations are tractable. We calculate the pressure to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the low-energy expansion, which is an expansion in powers of μI2/(4π)2f2 , where f is the (bare) pion decay constant. The spontaneous breakdown of the global internal symmetry U(1)I3 gives rise to a massless Goldstone boson or phonon. We discuss the properties of the low-energy effective theory describing this mode. Finally, we compare our results for the pressure and the speed of sound with recent lattice simulations with 2+1 flavors. The agreement is very good for isospin chemical potentials up to 180–200 MeV, depending on the physical quantity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.034022 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the pion condensation phenomenon in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at a finite isospin density. Specifically, the author uses two - flavor chiral perturbation theory (χPT) to study the condensation behavior of pions and their related thermodynamic properties at zero temperature and under the condition of a finite isospin density \(\mu_I\). ### Main research contents: 1. **Calculation of pressure**: The author calculated the pressure at the next - to - leading order (NLO) in the low - energy expansion, and further calculated the next - to - next - to - leading order (NNLO) pressure. These calculations involve a detailed analysis of the low - energy effective theory of pions. 2. **Non - relativistic limit**: In the non - relativistic limit, the author recovered the classical result, that is, the result of Lee, Huang and Yang (LHY) on the energy density of a dilute Bose gas, which includes loop corrections from χPT. 3. **Goldstone mode**: The spontaneous breaking of the global internal symmetry \(U(1)_I^3\) leads to the emergence of massless Goldstone bosons or phonons. The author discussed the properties of the low - energy effective theory describing this mode. 4. **Comparison with lattice simulations**: The author compared their results with the recent lattice simulation results including 2 + 1 flavors of quarks, and found that the agreement between the two is very good when the isospin chemical potential \(\mu_I\) reaches 180 - 200 MeV. ### Specific problem analysis: - **Pion condensation**: At a finite isospin density, pions can form a condensed state. The emergence of this condensed state is due to the spontaneous breaking of isospin symmetry, resulting in the appearance of massless Goldstone modes in the system. - **Thermodynamic properties**: By calculating thermodynamic quantities such as the pressure and the speed of sound of the system, the author explored the properties of the pion condensed state. In particular, in the low - energy expansion, the author calculated the contributions of different orders to more accurately describe the thermodynamic behavior of the system. - **Non - relativistic limit**: In the non - relativistic limit, the behavior of pions is similar to that of a dilute Bose gas. Through detailed calculations, the author verified the validity of this analogy and recovered the classical result. - **Verification of lattice simulations**: By comparing with the latest lattice simulation results, the author verified the accuracy of their theoretical calculations. This not only enhances the credibility of the theoretical model, but also provides a theoretical basis for future experiments. In summary, through detailed theoretical calculations and comparison with experimental data, this paper deeply explored the physical mechanism of pion condensation at a finite isospin density and its thermodynamic properties.
