Abstract:The dynamical equation of the boundary vorticity has been obtained, which shows that the viscosity at a solid wall is doubled as if the fluid became more viscous at the boundary. For certain viscous flows the boundary vorticity can be determined via the dynamical equation up to bounded errors for all time, without the need of knowing the details of the main stream flows. We then validate the dynamical equation by carrying out stochastic direct numerical simulations (i.e. the random vortex method for wall-bounded incompressible viscous flows) by two different means of updating the boundary vorticity, one using mollifiers of the Biot-Savart singular integral kernel, another using the dynamical equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new vorticity boundary condition for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for a general smooth domain in R3. This boundary condition is motivated by the generalized Navier-slip boundary condition involving the vorticity. It is shown first that such an initial boundary value problem is well-posed at least local in time. Furthermore, more importantly, we obtain some estimates on rate of convergence in C([0, T], H1(Ω)) and C([0, T], H2(Ω)) of the solutions to the corresponding solutions of the ideal Euler equations with the standard slip boundary condition.

Abstract:The present paper provides some arguments surrounding the controversies of boundary vorticity creation for incompressible viscous flow. Our discussion shows that boundary vorticity creation must be a viscous physical process. Importantly, it is emphasized that not only viscosity is responsible for spreading the generated vorticity out of the boundary, but also must be involved in the process of boundary vorticity creation to realize the no-slip boundary condition. Lyman flux is a part of the boundary vorticity flux under the Lighthill-Panton-Wu's definition, which provides an alternative interpretation of boundary vorticity dynamics. Different from the existing inviscid interpretation, we insist that viscosity is fully indispensable for generating the Lyman flux through the tangential boundary acceleration and surface pressure gradient where the acceleration adherence is shown to be derived from the velocity adherence directly. Through a detailed discussion on interfacial vortex sheet and slip velocity, it is revealed that the velocity jump across the material interfacial vortex sheet (a thin viscous shear layer as the fluid viscosity approaches to zero) is physically different from that across the interface. In addition, it is shown that the formation of surface pressure distribution is an inviscid process while the subsequent boundary vorticity generation by the tangential pressure gradient must be a viscid process (contributed by the non-equilibrium particle relaxation effect). These two processes are separated by a non-zero time increment with the same order as the particle relaxation time. Then, the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation is revisited to elaborate the crucial roles of viscosity for both the continuum and slip regimes. For continuum flows with a no-slip boundary, the physical carrier of the slip velocity in the inviscid Euler theory originates from the produced vorticity concentrated in the thin material vortex sheet. Interestingly, we find that Lyman flux must be a viscous boundary flux even for a slip boundary where the implicit viscid mechanism is attributed to the non-continuum effect hidden in the Knudsen layer. The present exploration suggests that a complete physical picture including the boundary vorticity creation and the formation of airfoil circulation should be built upon the viscous flow theory.

Strong Convergence of Vorticities in the 2D Viscosity Limit on a Bounded Domain

Abstract:In the vanishing viscosity limit from the Navier-Stokes to Euler equations on domains with boundaries, a main difficulty comes from the mismatch of boundary conditions and, consequently, the possible formation of a boundary layer. Within a purely interior framework, Constantin and Vicol showed that the two-dimensional viscosity limit is justified for any arbitrary but finite time under the assumption that on each compactly contained subset of the domain, the enstrophies are bounded uniformly along the viscosity sequence. Within this framework, we upgrade to local strong convergence of the vorticities under a similar assumption on the $p$-enstrophies, $p>2$. The key novel idea is the analysis of the evolution of the weak convergence defect.

Abstract:We design an artificial boundary condition for the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in streamfunction-vorticity formulation in a flat channel with slip boundary conditions on the wall. The new boundary condition is derived from the Oseen equations and the method of lines. A numerical experiment for the non-linear Navier-Stokes equations is presented The artificial boundary condition is compared with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions for the flow past a rectangular cylinder in a flat channel. The numerical results show that our boundary condition is more accurate.

Abstract:The present work elucidates the boundary behaviors of the velocity gradient tensor ($\bm{A}\equiv\bm{\nabla}\bm{u}$) and its principal invariants ($P,Q,R$) for compressible flow interacting with a stationary rigid wall. Firstly, it is found that the well-known Caswell formula exhibits an inherent physical structure being compatible with the normal-nilpotent decomposition, where both the strain-rate and rotation-rate tensors contain the physical effects from the spin component of the vorticity. Secondly, we derive the kinematic and dynamic forms of the boundary $\bm{A}$-flux from which the known boundary fluxes can be recovered by applying the symmetric-antisymmetric decomposition. Then, we obtain the explicit expression of the boundary $Q$ flux as a result of the competition among the boundary fluxes of squared dilatation, enstrophy and squared strain-rate. Importantly, we emphasize that both the coupling between the spin and surface pressure gradient, and the spin-curvature quadratic interaction, are \textit{not} responsible for the generation of the boundary $Q$ flux, although they contribute to both the boundary fluxes of enstrophy and squared strain-rate. Moreover, we prove that the boundary $R$ flux must vanish on a stationary rigid wall. Finally, the boundary fluxes of the invariants of the strain-rate and rotation-rate tensors are also discussed. It is revealed that the boundary flux of the third invariant of the strain-rate tensor is proportional to the wall-normal derivative of the vortex stretching term, which serves as a source term accounting for the the spatiotemporal evolution rate of the wall-normal enstrophy flux. These theoretical results provide a unified description of boundary vorticity and vortex dynamics, which could be valuable in understanding the formation mechanisms of complex near-wall coherent structures and the boundary sources of flow noise.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of circularly symmetric solutions to the initial boundary valueproblem of the nonisentropic compressibleNavier--Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain with impermeable boundary conditions when theviscosities and the heat conduction coefficienttend to zero at the same rate. By multiscale analysis, we obtain that away from the boundary the nonisentropiccompressible viscous flow can be approximated by thecorresponding inviscid flow, and near the boundary there are boundary layers for the angular velocity, density,and temperature in the leading order expansions ofsolutions, while the radial velocity and pressure do not have boundary layers in the leading order. The boundarylayers of velocity and temperature are described by a nonlinear parabolic system. We prove the stability ofboundary layers and rigorously justify the asymptotic behavior of solutions in the $L^{\infty}$ space for the smallviscosities and heat-conduction limit in the Lagrangian coordinates, as long as the strength of the boundarylayers is suitably small. Finally, we show that the similar asymptotic behavior of the small viscosities andheat conduction limit holds in the Eulerian coordinates for the compressible nonisentropic viscous flow.
Neumann Boundary Condition for Abelian Vortices

Abstract:We study abelian BPS vortices on a surface $S$ with boundary, which satisfy the Neumann boundary condition on the norm of the scalar field, or equivalently, that the current along the boundary vanishes. These vortices have quantised magnetic flux and quantised energy. Existence of such vortices is manifest when $S$ is the quotient by a reflection of a smooth surface without boundary, for example a hemisphere. The $N$-vortex moduli space then admits an interesting stratification, depending on the number of vortices in the interior of $S$ and the number of half-vortices on the boundary.

Abstract:We study the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem for Navier–Stokes equations of steady motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a two-dimensional, bounded, multiply connected domain Ω = Ω_1 \Ω_2, Ω_2⊂Ω_1 . We prove that this problem has a solution if the flux ℱ of the boundary value through ∂Ω 2 is nonnegative (inflow condition). The proof of the main result uses the Bernoulli law for a weak solution to the Euler equations and the one-sided maximum principle for the total head pressure corresponding to this solution.

Abstract:In this article we derive Biot-Savar law for exterior 2D domain. No-slip condition in terms of vorticity is expressed in integral form. For non-stationary fluid dynamics equations no-slip condition generates affine invariant manifold and no-slip integral relations on vorticity can be transferred to Robin-type boundary condition.

Abstract:We say that the vanishing viscosity limit holds in the classical sense if the velocity for a solution to the Navier-Stokes equations converges in the energy norm uniformly in time to the velocity for a solution to the Euler equations. We prove, for a bounded domain in dimension 2 or higher, that the vanishing viscosity limit holds in the classical sense if and only if a vortex sheet forms on the boundary.

Abstract:Vorticity is locally created on a boundary at the rate measured by the boundary vorticity flux, which can be further decomposed as the sum of the orbital rotation and the (generalized) spin. For incompressible viscous flow interacting with a stationary wall, the full expressions of the boundary fluxes of the orbital rotation and the spin are derived, for the first time, to elucidate their boundary creation mechanisms, respectively. Then, these new findings are successfully extended to the study of the boundary enstrophy dynamics, as well as the Lyman vorticity dynamics as an alternative interpretation to the boundary vorticity dynamics. Interestingly, it is found that the boundary coupling of the longitudinal and transverse processes is only embodied in the boundary spin flux, which is definitely not responsible for the generation of the boundary orbital-rotation flux. In addition, the boundary fluxes of enstrophy are directly associated with the boundary source of the second principal invariant of the velocity gradient tensor, and the two quadratic forms representing the spin-geometry interaction. The present exposition provides a new perspective to the vorticity dynamics on boundaries, which could be valuable in clarifying the formation mechanisms of near-wall coherent structures and flow noise at the fundamental level.

Abstract:From the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (NSK) equations, the exact relations between the fundamental surface physical quantities for two-phase viscous flow with diffuse interface are derived, including density gradient, shear stress, vorticity, pressure, enstrophy flux and surface curvature. These theoretical results provide a solid foundation of the boundary/interfacial vorticity dynamics and a new tool for analysis of complex interfacial phenomena in two-phase viscous flows. To demonstrate the application of the developed results, simulation of a droplet impacting and spreading on a solid wall is conducted by using a recently developed well-balanced discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (WB-DUGKS), focusing on spreading process when the separation bubbles form inside the droplet. The distributions of shear stress, pressure and enstrophy flux at the interface and wall are analyzed, particularly near the moving contact points and other characteristic points. This example gives an unique perspective to the physics of droplet impingement on a wall.

Abstract:We consider the flow of an { ideal} fluid in a 2D-bounded domain, admitting flows through the boundary of this domain. The flow is described by Euler equations with \textit{non-homogeneous } Navier slip boundary conditions. These conditions can be written in the form $\mathbf{v}\cdot \mathsf{n}=a,$ $2D(\mathbf{v})\mathsf{n}\cdot \mathsf{s}+\alpha \mathbf{v}% \cdot {\mathsf{s}}=b,$ where the tensor $D(\mathbf{v})$ is the rate-of-strain of the fluid's velocity $\mathbf{v}$ and\ $\mathsf{(n},% \mathsf{s)}$ is the pair formed by the normal and tangent vectors to the boundary. We establish the solvability of this problem in the class of solutions with $L_{p}-$bounded \ vorticity, $p\in (2,\infty ].$ To prove the solvability we realize the passage to the limit in Navier-Stokes equations with vanishing viscosity.

Abstract:We prove the persistence of boundary smoothness of vortex patches for a non-linear transport equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with velocity field given by convolution of the density with an odd kernel, homogeneous of degree $-(n-1)$ and of class $C^2(\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\}, \mathbb{R}^n).$ This allows the velocity field to have non-trivial divergence. The quasi-geostrophic equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and the Cauchy transport equation in the plane are examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a sign-changing free boundary problem that comes from the boundary regularity of rotating vortex patches of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. The complete classification of singular points has been obtained through establishing a new Weiss-type monotonicity formula. Upon these results, we prove that only $90^\circ$ corner type of singularity could happen at the boundary of a Lipschitz rotating vortex patch, while the other parts are $C^\infty$ smooth.

Abstract:We give a novel vorticity formulation for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Via a resolvent argument, we obtain Green's function and establish an upper bound, which is the 3D analog of [24]. Moreover, we prove similar results for the corresponding Stokes problem with more general mixed boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the Navier friction boundary condition. To simplify the expansion of solutions in terms of the viscosity, we shall only consider the case that the slip length a in the Navier boundary condition is a power of the viscosity epsilon, alpha=epsilon(gamma). First, by multi-scale analysis we formally deduce that gamma = 1/2 is critical in determining the boundary layer behavior. When gamma > 1/2, the boundary layer appears in the zero-th order terms of the expansion of solutions, and satisfies the same boundary value problem for the nonlinear Prandtl equations as in the non-slip case, when gamma = 1/2, the boundary layer also appears in the zero-th order terms of solutions, and satisfies the nonlinear Prandtl equations but with a Robin boundary condition for the tangential velocity profile, and when gamma < 1/2, the boundary layer appears in the order O(epsilon(1-2 gamma)) terms of solutions, and satisfies a boundary value problem for the linearized Prandtl equations. Secondly, we justify rigorously the asymptotic behavior of the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with anisotropic viscosities by using the energy method, when the slip length is larger than the square root of the vertical viscosity. Even though the boundary layer appears in the lower order terms of solutions and satisfies a linear problem, the vorticity of flow is unbounded in the vanishing viscosity limit.
