Abstract:Realizing versatile functionalities in a single photonic device is crucial for photonic integration. We here propose a polarization-switchable and wavelength-controllable multi-functional metasurface. By changing the polarization state of incident light, its functionality can be switched between the flat focusing lens and exciting surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) wave. Interestingly, by tuning the wavelength of incident light, the generated SPP waves can also be controlled at desired interfaces, traveling along the upper or lower interface of the metasurface, or along both of them, depending on whether the incident light satisfies the first or second Kerker condition. This polarization-switchable and wavelength-controllable multifunctional metasurface may provide flexibility in designing tunable or multifunctional metasurfaces and may find potential applications in highly integrated photonic systems.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern optics, optical elements have become an indispensable part of an optical system. A metasurface is a nanostructure composed of arrays of sub-wavelength scatterers and is widely used due to its simple structure, thin thickness, easy integration, and high utilization rate. This paper designs a polarization-multiplexed transmissive metasurface lens in the visible light band 690 nm and near-infrared light band 880 nm. The metasurface lens combines the x -polarized lens design with the y -polarized lens design to realize three metasurface lenses with dual wavelength and different polarization states under the same metasurface. The metasurface lenses are: a coaxial confocal metasurface lens with the focus length of f 1 = f 2 =7 215 nm, an off-axis metasurface lens with the focus length of f 1 = f 2 =7 221 nm and with a displacement of x d =±4 000 nm, and a coaxial metasurface lens with the focus length of f 1 =7 000 nm and f 2 =10 000 nm, respectively. They have not only a high numerical aperture of 0.8 but also a good focusing capability with a full width at half maximum close to diffraction limit, and their space utilization is also improved. This compact and highly numerical aperture and high spatial utilization of dual-wavelength polarization multiplexing metasurface design provides an effective solution for the development of focusing lens and has unique potentials and advantages in fluorescent microlens, optical imaging, etc.

Abstract:Metasurface is a class of two-dimensional microstructure functional materials, which has an ability of modulating light in subwavelength region and becomes a hot topic during the last decade. An advantage of metasurfaces is their versatility by invoking the degrees of freedom of light field to achieve various functionalities. In this paper, we report methods of using the polarization and dispersion of light to achieve multifunctional metasurface devices, allowing the different degrees of freedom of light to carry independent phase profiles to achieve the polarization-dependent conversion of Bessel beams with different orders and numerical apertures as well as integrated optical tweezers-optical spanner metasurface. Also, the wavelength-controlled multifunctional metalens by introducing an improved genetic algorithm has been implemented. We envision our research are expected to be the potential candidates in multifunctional integrated optical devices.

Abstract:Metasurface regulates the polarization, phase, amplitude, frequency, and other characteristics of electromagnetic waves through the subwavelength microstructure. By using its polarization characteristics, it can realize the functions of optical rotation and vector beam generation. It is the most widely used method of regulation. However, parallel optical manipulation, imaging, and communication usually require polarization-insensitive focused (or vortex) arrays of beams, so polarization-independent wavelength multiplexing optical systems need to be considered. In this paper, the genetic algorithm combined with the computer-generated hologram (CGH) is used to control the transmission phase of the structure itself, and on the basis of wavelength multiplexing, the corresponding array of focused or vortex beams without the polarization selection property is realized. The simulation software results show that the method has a huge application prospect in optical communication and optical manipulation.

Abstract:Diffraction gratings are crucial optical elements in various optical systems, which can realize tailored diffraction energy distributions as well as phase modulations based on Fourier series. Meanwhile, the polarization gratings can produce arbitrarily specified polarization states on a set of desired diffraction orders for realizing polarimeter. However, simultaneously and independently tailoring the encoded phase profiles and polarization states in different diffraction orders has not been investigated previously. Here, a dielectric metasurface with the capability of generating different holographic images (generalized phase profiles) in different diffraction orders with controllable polarization states is proposed. Such functionality is achieved by applying the double‐phase method into the metasurface design process for manipulating the complex amplitude distributions of two orthogonal polarization bases. Furthermore, in order to prove that the proposed design strategy is suitable to achieve complicated wavefront modulation in a straightforward and convenient manner, a vectorial holographic image with spatially continuous polarization distribution is also obtained without any iteration process. The proposed method may pave the way to achieve a variety of applications such as beam shaping, polarization imaging as well as multifunctional optical systems. A dielectric metasurface with the capability of generating different holographic images in different diffraction orders with controllable polarization states is successfully demonstrated. Such functionality is achieved by manipulating the complex amplitude distributions of two orthogonal polarization bases. The proposed method may pave the way to achieve applications such as beam shaping, polarization imaging as well as multifunctional optical system.

Abstract:Huygens metasurface, as a subcategory of metamaterials, shows great potential in the capacity and efficiency of electromagnetic wave manipulation within a subwavelength scale. Here, the transmission-type Huygens metasurface is demonstrated for complete and independent control of orthogonally polarized transmitted waves by constructing pairs of crossed electric and magnetic resonances in three-sheet meta-atoms as the building blocks for holographic imaging. Under incoherent horizontally and vertically polarized illuminations, two designated holographic images with negligible mutual interferences are accomplished with at least 62.95% measured imaging efficiency and 63.53 signal-to-noise ratio, respectively. This work addresses several major issues in traditional polarization-multiplexed holography with regard to transmission-coefficient manipulation capacity, image fidelity, and simple fabrication technique, empowering advanced research and applications in polarization-selective microwave devices and information processing.

Abstract:Thermal emission is a ubiquitous electromagnetic wave with an extreme broad spectrum in nature, and controlling thermal emission can be used to develop low-cost and convenient infrared light sources with wavelength tunable in a wide range that is currently difficult to other sources. Conventional metasurfaces are commonly used to control light but lack the flexibility to achieve complex emission spectral profiles and dynamic tuning. Here, we introduce a novel dual-layer metasurface structure with two completely independent layers to achieve a multi-peak thermal emission within the 5-8 {\mu}m wavelength range. Simulations and experiments show that this two-layer structure can achieve arbitrary spectral shapes without interfering with multiple resonant modes. This unique configuration presents a promising platform for further exploration in thermal emission engineering, enabling spectral control and dynamic tuning.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have powerful light field manipulation capabilities, which have been extensively studied in the past few years and have developed rapidly in various fields. At present, the focus of metasurface research has shifted to the tunable functionality. In this paper, a temperature-controllable multifunctional metasurface lens based on phase transition material is designed. First of all, by controlling the temperature of the desired working area and the polarization of the incident light, switching among multiple focus, single focus, and no focus at any position can be achieved, and the intensity and helicity of the output light can be adjusted. In addition, a polarization-sensitive intensity-tunable metalens based on the P-B phase principle is designed, when the incident light is linearly polarized light, left-handed circularly polarized light, or right-handed circularly polarized light, it has the same focal point but with different light field intensities. Therefore, the focused intensity can be tunable by the polarization state of the incident light.

Abstract:This paper reports an integrated bifunctional metasurface composed of metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) trapezoidal nanoantennas. Polarization, wavelength, and angle are all multiplexed to improve the integration and the performance of the metasurface. Under orthogonal-polarized incidence, phase and amplitude are tuned independently by gap surface plasmon (GSP) resonance, leading to the combination of beam deflection and structural color printing functions. Both functions work in broadband, namely, 360 nm to 540 nm for beam deflection function and 400 nm to 800 nm for structural color printing function. Angle multiplexing further improves the tunability of the two functions. This integrated bifunctional metasurface is very suitable to be used in ultra-compact optics systems, and may find more applications in optical and biological sensing areas.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have exhibited great capabilities to control electromagnetic waves, and many multifunctional metasurfaces were recently proposed. However, although angle-multiplexed meta-devices were successfully realized in reflection geom-etries, their transmission-mode counterparts are difficult to achieve due to the additional requirements. Here, we design and fabricate a transmissive angle-multiplexed meta-polarizer in the microwave regime based on a multilayer metasurface. Coupled-mode-theory analyses reveal that the device exhibits distinct angle-dependent transmissive responses under exci-tations with different polarizations, and such differences are further enhanced by multiple scatterings inside the device. Microwave experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations and theoretical analyses.

Abstract:Flat optics has demonstrated great advances in miniaturizing conventional bulky optical elements due to recent developments in metasurface design. Specific applications of such designs include spatial differentiation and the compression of free-space. However, metasurfaces designed for such applications are often polarization-dependent and are designed for a single functionality. In this work, we introduce a polarization-independent metasurface structure by designing guided resonances with degenerate band curvatures in a photonic crystal slab. Our device can perform both free-space compression and spatial differentiation when operated at different frequencies at normal incidence. This work demonstrates the promise of dispersion engineering in metasurface design to create ultrathin devices with polarization-independent functionality.

Abstract:Extending the optical control capabilities of metasurfaces for broader functionalities has recently attracted extensive attention. Simultaneously achieving amplitude and phase control is an effective route as it allows rebuilding the full information of the field. However, related previous studies mostly rely on anisotropic meta-atoms, which restrict the available incident polarizations. Here, a polarization-insensitive amplitude and phase control method is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in the terahertz regime, which is actualized by introducing interference effect in reflective-type meta-molecules composed of isotropic meta-atoms. Two kinds of functional meta-mirror devices, i.e., multi-order meta-gratings and multi-focal meta-lenses, are designed and characterized, where the results verify this method very well. This proposed method further enriches the routes to control amplitude and phase and may also find broad applications in realizing flexible wavefront control devices with complex functionalities.

Abstract:Traditional optical elements, such as waveplates and polarization beam splitters, are essential for classical and quantum information techniques. Yet their bulky size and heavy weight are prejudicial for miniaturizing information systems. Here, we present our recent studies on polarization manipulation and multiplexing with optical metasurfaces, which significantly miniaturize optical systems. One is to break the limitation of polarization multiplexing in optical metasurfaces with engineered noise, and the other is to realize multichannel distribution and transformation of entangled photons with dielectric metasurfaces. The approaches achieve potential applications in high-capacity optical displays, data storage, information encryption, and quantum information networks.

Abstract:Thermal emission caused by the thermal motion of the charged particles is commonly broadband, un-polarized, and incoherent, like a melting pot of electromagnetic waves, which makes it unsuitable for infrared applications in many cases requiring specific thermal emission properties. Metasurfaces, characterized by two-dimensional subwavelength artificial nanostructures, have been extensively investigated for their flexibility in tuning optical properties, which provide an ideal platform for shaping thermal emission. Recently, remarkable progress was achieved not only in tuning thermal emission in multiple degrees of freedom, such as wavelength, polarization, radiation angle, coherence, and so on but also in applications of compact and integrated optical devices. Here, we review the recent advances in the regulation of thermal emission through metasurfaces and corresponding infrared applications, such as infrared sensing, radiative cooling, and thermophotovoltaic devices.

Abstract:In the terahertz band, how integrating multiple functions into a device with a tiny unit structure is a challenge. In this paper, an optically-controlled multifunctional linear polarization conversion metasurface working in the terahertz band is proposed. The reflection and transmission polarization conversion functions can be realized by irradiating the metasurface with pump light with different wavelengths. The metasurface is designed with a multilayer structure, and a photosensitive semiconductor alone is used to control multiple functions, which makes the manipulation of multifunctional devices easy. When the photosensitive semiconductor germanium (Ge) and silicon (Si) are in different states, the metasurface can realize broadband reflection and transmission polarization conversion functions, the corresponding relative bandwidth are 102.4% and 98.9%, respectively, and the work efficiency can be regulated by pump light with different intensity and wavelength. In addition, the working principle of the metasurface is analyzed by eigenmode theory and surface current distributions. The stability of the metasurface to structural parameters and incident angles are discussed.
