Abstract:Polygonal billiards exhibit a rich and complex dynamical behavior. In recent years polygonal billiards have attracted great attention due to their application in the understanding of anomalous transport, but also at the fundamental level, due to its connections with diverse fields in mathematics. We explore this complexity and its consequences on the properties of particle transport in infinitely long channels made of the repetitions of an elementary open polygonal cell. Borrowing ideas from the Zemlyakov-Katok construction, we construct an interval exchange transformation classified by the singular directions of the discontinuities of the billiard flow over the translation surface associated to the elementary cell. From this, we derive an exact expression of a scattering map of the cell connecting the outgoing flow of trajectories with the unconstrained incoming flow. The scattering map is defined over a partition of the coordinate space, characterized by different families of trajectories. Furthermore, we obtain an analytical expression for the average speed of propagation of ballistic modes, describing with high accuracy the speed of propagation of ballistic fronts appearing in the tails of the distribution of the particle displacement. The symbolic hierarchy of the trajectories forming these ballistic fronts is also discussed.

Abstract:We study billiards in domains enclosed by circular polygons. These are closed strictly convex curves formed by finitely many circular arcs. We prove the existence of a set in phase space, corresponding to generic sliding trajectories close enough to the boundary of the domain, in which the return billiard dynamics is semiconjugate to a transitive subshift on infinitely many symbols that contains the full N -shift as a topological factor for any , so it has infinite topological entropy. We prove the existence of uncountably many asymptotic generic sliding trajectories approaching the boundary with optimal uniform linear speed, give an explicit exponentially big (in q ) lower bound on the number of q -periodic trajectories as , and present an unusual property of the length spectrum. Our proofs are entirely analytical.

Abstract:The present work consists of a numerical study of the dynamics of irrational polygonal billiards. Our contribution reinforces the hypothesis that these systems could be Strongly Mixing, although never demonstrably chaotic, and discuss the role of rotational symmetries on the billiards boundaries. We introduce a biparametric polygonal billiards family with only $C_n$ rotational symmetries. Initially, we calculate for some integers values of $n$ the filling of the phase space through the Relative Measure $r(\ell, \theta; t)$ for a plane of parameters $\ell \times \theta$. From the resulting phase diagram, we could identify the completely ergodic systems. The numerical evidence that symmetrical polygonal billiards can be Strongly Mixing is obtained by calculating the Position Autocorrelation Function, $\Cor_x(t)$, these figures of merit result in power law-type decays $t^{- \sigma}$. The Strongly Mixing property is indicated by $\sigma = 1$. For odd small values of $n$, the exponent $\sigma \simeq 1$ is obtained while $\sigma < 1$, weakly mixing cases, for small even values. Intermediate $n$ values present $\sigma \simeq 1$ independent of parity. For high values of symmetry parameter $n$, the biprametric family tends to be a circular billiard (integrable case). This range shows even less ergodic behavior when $n$ increases and $\sigma$ decreases.

Abstract:We study the geometry of billiard orbits on rectangular billiards. A truncated billiard orbit induces a partition of the rectangle into polygons. We prove that thirteen is a sharp upper bound for the number of different areas of these polygons.

Abstract:We investigate chaotic scattering on an attractive step potential with a quadrupolar deformation. The phase space features of the bound billiard are studied by using the notion of symmetry lines to find periodic orbits. We show that the scattering dynamics is intimately linked to structures in the bound billiard (infinite potential wall) phase space. The existence of preferred scattering directions is shown to be a consequence of large scale features of the phase space such as the period-two orbits. Self-similarity in the scattering functions is directly linked to unstable periodic orbits of the bound phase space. The main observations and methodology are applicable to concave billiards in general.

On the complexity of polygonal billiards

Abstract:We show that the complexity of the billiard in a typical polygon grows cubically and the number of saddle connections grows quadratically along certain subsequences. It is known that the set of points whose first n-bounces hits the same sequence of sides as the orbit of an aperiodic phase point z converges to z. We establishe a polynomial lower bound estimate on this convergence rate for almost every z. This yields an upper bound on the upper metric complexity and upper slow entropy of polygonal billiards. We also prove significant deviations from the expected convergence behavior. Finally we extend these results to higher dimensions as well as to arbitrary invariant measures.

Abstract:We define a new class of plane billiards - the `pensive billiard' - in which the billiard ball travels along the boundary for some distance depending on the incidence angle before reflecting, while preserving the billiard rule of equality of the angles of incidence and reflection. This generalizes so called `puck billiards' proposed by M.Bialy, as well as a `vortex billiard', i.e. the motion of a point vortex dipole in 2D hydrodynamics on domains with boundary. We prove the variational origin and invariance of a symplectic structure for pensive billiards, as well as study their properties including conditions for a twist map, the existence of periodic orbits, etc. We also demonstrate the appearance of both the golden and silver ratios in the corresponding hydrodynamical vortex setting. Finally, we introduce and describe basic properties of pensive outer billiards.

Deviations for generalized tiling billiards in cyclic polygons

Abstract:This work continues the study of tiling billiards, a class of dynamical system introduced by Davis et al. in 2018. We develop the study of generalized tiling billiards in a cyclic polygon. This work shows that the behavior of generalized tiling billiards in cyclic N-gons with N > 4 is considerably different from that of triangular and quadrilateral tiling billiards studied before. Indeed, we exhibit an open set of generalized tiling billiard trajectories deviating sublinearly from their asymptotic direction, whereas for N = 3 or 4 almost every trajectory stays at a bounded distance from a line. Moreover, we establish the rate of deviations both in the generic case and in some non generic cases.

Abstract:We study polygonal billiards with reflection laws contracting the reflected angle towards the normal. It is shown that if a polygon does not have parallel sides facing each other, then the corresponding billiard map has finitely many ergodic SRB measures whose basins cover a set of full Lebesgue measure.

Abstract:We consider a billiard problem for compact domains bounded by confocal conics on a hyperboloid of one sheet in the Minkowski space. We show that there are two types of confocal families in such setting. Using an algebro-geometric integration technique, we prove that the billiard within generalized ellipses of each type is integrable in the sense of Liouville. Further, we prove a generalization of the Poncelet theorem and derive Cayley-type conditions for periodic trajectories and explore geometric consequences.

Periodic orbits for square and rectangular billiards

Abstract:Mathematical billiards is much like the real game: a point mass, representing the ball, rolls in a straight line on a (perfectly friction-less) table, striking the sides according to the law of reflection. A billiard trajectory is then completely characterised by the number of elastic collisions. The rules of mathematical billiards may be simple, but the possible behaviours of billiard trajectories are endless. In fact, several fundamental theory questions in mathematics can be recast as billiards problems. A billiard trajectory is called a periodic orbit if the number of distinct collisions in the trajectory is finite. We classify all possible periodic orbits on square and rectangular tables. We show that periodic orbits on such billiard tables cannot have an odd number of distinct collisions. We also present a connection between the number of different classes of periodic orbits and Euler's totient function, which for any integer $N$ counts how many integers smaller than $N$ share no common divisor with $N$ other than $1$. We explore how to construct periodic orbits with a prescribed (even) number of distinct collisions, and investigate properties of inadmissible (singular) trajectories, which are trajectories that eventually terminate at a vertex (a table corner).

Abstract:Ivrii's Conjecture states that in every billiard in Euclidean space the set of periodic orbits has measure zero. It implies that for every $k\geq2$ there are no k-reflective billiards, i.e., billiards having an open set of k-periodic orbits. This conjecture is open in Euclidean spaces, with just few partial results. It is known that in the two-dimensional sphere there exist 3-reflective billiards (Yu.M.Baryshnikov). All the 3-reflective spherical billiards were classified in a paper by V.Blumen, K.Kim, J.Nance, V.Zharnitsky: the boundary of each of them lies in three orthogonal big circles. In the present paper we study the analogue of Ivrii's Conjecture for projective billiards introduced by S.Tabachnikov. In two dimensions there exists a 3-reflective projective billiard, the so-called right-spherical billiard, which is the projection of a spherical 3-reflective billiard. We show that the only 3-reflective planar projective billiard with piecewise smooth boundary is the above-mentioned right-spherical billiard. In higher dimensions, we prove the non-existence of 3-reflective projective billiards with piecewise smooth boundary, and also the non-existence of projective billiards with piecewise smooth boundary having a subset of triangular orbits of non-zero measure in the phase space.

Abstract:Recent experiments and numerical simulations have shown that certain types of microorganisms "reflect" off of a flat surface at a critical angle of departure, independent of the angle of incidence. The nature of the reflection may be active (cell and flagellar contact with the surface) or passive (hydrodynamic) interactions. We explore the billiard-like motion of a body with this empirical reflection law inside a regular polygon and show that the dynamics can settle on a stable periodic orbit or can be chaotic, depending on the swimmer's departure angle and the domain geometry. The dynamics are often found to be robust to the introduction of weak random fluctuations. The Lyapunov exponent of swimmer trajectories can be positive or negative, can have extremal values, and can have discontinuities depending on the degree of the polygon. A passive sorting device is proposed that traps swimmers of different departure angles into separate bins. We also study the external problem of a microorganism swimming in a patterned environment of square obstacles, where the departure angle dictates the possibility of trapping or diffusive trajectories.

Abstract:In the class of projective billiards, which contains the usual billiards, we exhibit counter-examples to Ivrii's conjecture, which states that in any planar billiard with smooth boundary the set of periodic orbits has zero measure. The counter-examples are polygons admitting a $2$-parameters family of $n$-periodic orbits, with $n$ being either $3$ or any even number grower than $4$.

Abstract:In this text we study billiards on ovals and investigate some consequences of a rotational symmetry of the boundary on the dynamics. As it simplifies some calculations, the symmetry helps to obtain the results. We focus on periodic orbits with the same symmetry of the boundary which always exist and prove that in general half of them are elliptic and Moser stable and the other half are hyperbolic with homo(hetero)clinic intersections.

Abstract:In this work we completely describe the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. In the first part of this work, we propose a geometric approach of dynamics by introducing natural foliations associated to it. In the second part, we exploit the relationship between triangle tiling billiards and a family of fully flipped $3$-interval exchange transformations on the circle. We give a combinatorial approach of dynamics via renormalization. By uniting the two approaches, we prove several conjectures on the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. First, we prove the Tree Conjecture and the 4n+2 Conjecture, both concerning the symbolic dynamics of periodic trajectories, and both stated by Baird-Smith, Davis, Fromm and Iyer. Second, we study a family of exceptional trajectories which are closely related to the orbits of minimal Arnoux-Rauzy maps. We prove that all of these exceptional trajectories pass by all tiles, which confirms our own conjecture with P. Hubert on their non-linear escape. Moreover, we use tiling billiards to prove the convergence, up to rescaling, of arithmetic orbits of the Arnoux-Yoccoz map to the Rauzy fractal, conjectured by Hooper and Weiss. All of these conjectures have been stated in print in the last three years.

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that many species of microorganisms leave a solid surface at a fixed angle determined by steric interactions and near-field hydrodynamics. This angle is completely independent of the incoming angle. For several collisions in a closed body this determines a unique type of billiard system, an aspecular billiard in which the outgoing angle is fixed for all collisions. We analyze such a system using numerical simulation of this billiard for varying tables and outgoing angles, and also utilize the theory of one-dimensional maps and wavefront dynamics. When applicable we cite results from and compare our system to similar billiard systems in the literature. We focus on examples from three broad classes: the ellipse, the Bunimovich billiards, and the Sinai billiards. The effect of a noisy outgoing angle is also discussed.
