Abstract:In this article, we discuss the method of linear kernel quantile estimator proposed by Parzen (1979). We establish a Bahadur representation in sense of almost surely convergence with the rate log-an under the case of S-mixing random variable sequence which was proposed by Berkes (2009). We also obtain the strong consistence of this estimator and its convergence rate.

Methodology And Computing In Applied Probability

Abstract:In this paper, the Bahadur representation of the empirical and Bernstein polynomials estimators of the quantile function based on associated sequences are investigated. The rate of approximation depends on the rate of decay in covariances, and it converges to the optimal rate observed under independence when the covariances quickly approach zero. As an application, we establish a Berry-Esseen bound with the rate assuming polynomial decay of covariances. All these results are established under fairly general conditions on the underlying distributions. Additionally, we perform Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the finite sample performance of the suggested estimators, utilizing an associated and non-mixing model.

Abstract:Under some mild conditions, we establish a strong Bahadur representation of a general class of nonparametric local linear M -estimators for mixing processes on a random field. If the so-called optimal bandwidth h n = O (| n | −1/5 ), n ∈ Z d , is chosen, then the remainder rates in the Bahadur representation for the local M -estimators of the regression function and its derivative are of order O (| n | −4/5 log | n |). Moreover, we derive some asymptotic properties for the nonparametric local linear M -estimators as applications of our result.

Abstract:A standard model of (conditional) heteroscedasticity, i.e., the phenomenon that the variance of a process changes over time, is the Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, which is especially important for economics and finance. GARCH models are typically estimated by the Quasi-Maximum Likelihood (QML) method, which works under mild statistical assumptions. Here, we suggest a finite sample approach, called ScoPe, to construct distribution-free confidence regions around the QML estimate, which have exact coverage probabilities, despite no additional assumptions about moments are made. ScoPe is inspired by the recently developed Sign-Perturbed Sums (SPS) method, which however cannot be applied in the GARCH case. ScoPe works by perturbing the score function using randomly permuted residuals. This produces alternative samples which lead to exact confidence regions. Experiments on simulated and stock market data are also presented, and ScoPe is compared with the asymptotic theory and bootstrap approaches.

Abstract:On the one hand, we investigate the Bahadur representation for sample quantiles under φ-mixing sequence with φ(n) = O(n−3) and obtain a rate as $O\left(n^{-\frac{3}{4}} \log n\right)$, a.s. On the other hand, by relaxing the condition of mixing coefficients to $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \varphi^{1 / 2}(n)<\infty$, a rate O(n−1/2(log n)1/2), a.s., is also obtained.

Abstract:The class of generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (GARCH) models has proved particularly valuable in modelling time series with time varying volatility. These include financial data, which can be particularly heavy tailed. It is well understood now that the tail heaviness of the innovation distribution plays an important role in determining the relative performance of the two competing estimation methods, namely the maximum quasi-likelihood estimator based on a Gaussian likelihood (GMLE) and the log-transform-based least absolutely deviations estimator (LADE) (see Peng and Yao 2003 Biometrika, 90, 967-75). A practically relevant question is when to use what. We provide in this paper a solution to this question. By interpreting the LADE as a version of the maximum quasilikelihood estimator under the likelihood derived from assuming hypothetically that the log-squared innovations obey a Laplace distribution, we outline a selection procedure based on some goodness-of-fit type statistics. The methods are illustrated with both simulated and real data sets. Although we deal with the estimation for GARCH models only, the basic idea may be applied to address the estimation procedure selection problem in a general regression setting.

Abstract:This paper presents a new quantitative approach for finding the optimal weights of currency basket, with which the exchange rate risk of the basket is minimized. The article employs t-GARCH and Copula model for better measuring the dependency of currencies in basket. “Maximization by Parts in Likelihood” method is also used to improve the precision of parameters estimation. Our model is applied to daily returns of four currencies in a basket. Taking VaR as the measurement of risk, the empirical result suggests a larger weight should be optimally accorded to the dollar though there is a nonnegligible role for the Euro and Japanese yen.
Conditional Quantile Analysis for Realized GARCH Models

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel quantile approach to harness the high-frequency information and improve the daily conditional quantile estimation. Specifically, we model the conditional standard deviation as a realized GARCH model and employ conditional standard deviation, realized volatility, realized quantile, and absolute overnight return as innovations in the proposed dynamic quantile models. We devise a two-step estimation procedure to estimate the conditional quantile parameters. The first step applies a quasi-maximum likelihood estimation procedure, with the realized volatility as a proxy for the volatility proxy, to estimate the conditional standard deviation parameters. The second step utilizes a quantile regression estimation procedure with the estimated conditional standard deviation in the first step. Asymptotic theory is established for the proposed estimation methods, and a simulation study is conducted to check their finite-sample performance. Finally, we apply the proposed methodology to calculate the value at risk (VaR) of 20 individual assets and compare its performance with existing competitors.

Spectral Targeting Estimation of $λ$-GARCH models

Abstract:This paper presents a novel estimator of orthogonal GARCH models, which combines (eigenvalue and -vector) targeting estimation with stepwise (univariate) estimation. We denote this the spectral targeting estimator. This two-step estimator is consistent under finite second order moments, while asymptotic normality holds under finite fourth order moments. The estimator is especially well suited for modelling larger portfolios: we compare the empirical performance of the spectral targeting estimator to that of the quasi maximum likelihood estimator for five portfolios of 25 assets. The spectral targeting estimator dominates in terms of computational complexity, being up to 57 times faster in estimation, while both estimators produce similar out-of-sample forecasts, indicating that the spectral targeting estimator is well suited for high-dimensional empirical applications.

Abstract:Conditions for the existence of strictly stationary multivariate GARCH processes in the so-called BEKK parametrisation, which is the most general form of multivariate GARCH processes typically used in applications, and for their geometric ergodicity are obtained. The conditions are that the driving noise is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and zero is in the interior of its support and that a certain matrix built from the GARCH coefficients has spectral radius smaller than one. To establish the results semi-polynomial Markov chains are defined and analysed using algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Previous research indicates that the maximum likelihood estimates of Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models on foreign exchange rates, under various distributional assumptions, are sensitive to the presence of outliers. The advantage of the proposed Bounded Influence Estimator (BIE) is that it limits the influence of a small subset of data and is asymptotically normal. The BIE provides more consistent and robust estimates than Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) and semi-parametric estimator, both of which tend to underestimate volatility persistence due to outliers. It is thus robust to outliers and model misspecification. Results of BIE estimates of GARCH models on the exchange rate series of five major currencies indicate that BIE offers an efficient mechanism for down-weighting outlying observations and is a competitive alternative to MLE.

Abstract:This paper develops a methodology to accommodate uncertainty in a GARCH model with the goal of improving portfolio decisions via Bayesian learning. Given the abundant evidence of uncertainty in estimating expected returns, we focus our analyses on the single parameter driving expected returns. After deriving an Uncertainty-Implied GARCH (UI-GARCH) model, we investigate how learning about uncertainty affects investments in a dynamic portfolio optimization problem. We consider an investor with constant relative risk aversion (CRRA) utility who wants to maximize her expected utility from terminal wealth under an Affine GARCH(1,1) model. The corresponding stock evolution, and therefore, the wealth process, is treated as a Bayesian information model that learns about the expected return with each period. We explore the one- and two-period cases, demonstrating a significant impact of uncertainty on optimal allocation and wealth-equivalent losses, particularly in the case of a small sample size or large standard errors in the parameter estimation. These analyses are conducted under well-documented parametric choices. The methodology can be adapted to other GARCH models and applications beyond portfolio optimization.

Abstract:This article develops an option pricing model and its corresponding delta formula in the context of the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) asset return process. the development utilizes the locally risk-neutral valuation relationship (LRNVR). the LRNVR is shown to hold under certain combinations of preference and distribution assumptions. the GARCH option pricing model is capable of reflecting the changes in the conditional volatility of the underlying asset in a parsimonious manner. Numerical analyses suggest that the GARCH model may be able to explain some well-documented systematic biases associated with the Black-Scholes model. Copyright 1995 Blackwell Publishers.

Abstract:General multiperiod optimal consumption and investment problems with proportional transaction costs are investigated in this paper, a GARCH-type process is used to model the risky assets return series so that its time-varying moments and conditional heteroskedasticity can be properly described. We model this kind of consumption and investment problems as dynamic stochastic optimization problems, which can easily cope with different utility functions and any number of time periods. The procedure to efficiently solve the resulting nonlinear stochastic optimization problem is discussed in detail and a parallelizable decomposition algorithm is devised. Numerical results show the suitability and promise of our methodology.

Abstract:We consider the problem of pricing discretely monitored Asian options over $T$ monitoring points where the underlying asset is modeled by a geometric Brownian motion. We provide two quantum algorithms with complexity poly-logarithmic in $T$ and polynomial in $1/\epsilon$, where $\epsilon$ is the additive approximation error. Our algorithms are obtained respectively by using an $O(\log T)$-qubit semi-digital quantum encoding of the Brownian motion that allows for exponentiation of the stochastic process and by analyzing classical Monte Carlo algorithms inspired by the semi-digital encodings. The best quantum algorithm obtained using this approach has complexity $\widetilde{O}(1/\epsilon^{3})$ where the $\widetilde{O}$ suppresses factors poly-logarithmic in $T$ and $1/\epsilon$. The methods proposed in this work generalize to pricing options where the underlying asset price is modeled by a smooth function of a sub-Gaussian process and the payoff is dependent on the weighted time-average of the underlying asset price.

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic properties of the Gaussian Quasi‐Maximum‐Likelihood estimator (QMLE) for the Real‐time GARCH(1,1) model of Smetanina (2017, Journal of Financial Econometrics, 15(4), 561‐601). The developed theory relies on the functional dependence measure and recently developed theory for derivative processes in Dahlhaus et.al. (2019, Bernoulli, 25(2), 1013‐1044). We prove stationarity and ergodicity of the underlying processes and consistency for the QMLE estimator under mild conditions. Further, under normality of the error term, we also establish asymptotic normality for QMLE, which then becomes MLE, at the usual rate. Finally, in our simulations we show that consistency and asymptotic normality holds for typical sample sizes.

Abstract:In a Markovian model for a financial market, we characterize the best arbitrage with respect to the market portfolio that can be achieved using nonanticipative investment strategies, in terms of the smallest positive solution to a parabolic partial differential inequality; this is determined entirely on the basis of the covariance structure of the model. The solution is intimately related to properties of strict local martingales and is used to generate the investment strategy which realizes the best possible arbitrage. Some extensions to non-Markovian situations are also presented.

Abstract:SummaryARCH/GARCH representations of financial series usually attempt to model the serial correlation structure of squared returns. Although it is undoubtedly true that squared returns are correlated, there is increasing empirical evidence of stronger correlation in the absolute returns than in squared returns. Rather than assuming an explicit form for volatility, we adopt an approximation approach; we approximate the γth power of volatility by an asymmetric GARCH function with the power index γ chosen so that the approximation is optimum. Asymptotic normality is established for both the quasi‐maximum likelihood estimator (qMLE) and the least absolute deviations estimator (LADE) in our approximation setting. A consequence of our approach is a relaxation of the usual stationarity condition for GARCH models. In an application to real financial datasets, the estimated values for γ are found to be close to one, consistent with the stylized fact that the strongest autocorrelation is found in the absolute returns. A simulation study illustrates that the qMLE is inefficient for models with heavy‐tailed errors, whereas the LADE is more robust.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new class of asymmetric beta-binomial generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (GARCH) models for bounded integer-valued time series, which can capture the asymmetric impact of positive and negative observations. We study the stationarity conditions of the process and derive the moment and covariance functions. Furthermore, we estimate the unknown parameters using the conditional maximum likelihood (CML) method. The asymptotic properties of the estimators are discussed, as well as their finite-sample performance. Finally, we illustrate the model to real time series data in the field of meteorology.

Abstract:We deal with zero-delay source coding of a vector Gaussian autoregressive (AR) source subject to an average mean squared error (MSE) fidelity criterion. Toward this end, we consider the nonanticipative rate distortion function (NRDF) which is a lower bound to the causal and zero-delay rate distortion function (RDF). We use the realization scheme with feedback proposed in [1] to model the corresponding optimal "test-channel" of the NRDF, when considering vector Gaussian AR(1) sources subject to an average MSE distortion. We give conditions on the vector Gaussian AR(1) source to ensure asymptotic stationarity of the realization scheme (bounded performance). Then, we encode the vector innovations due to Kalman filtering via lattice quantization with subtractive dither and memoryless entropy coding. This coding scheme provides a tight upper bound to the zero-delay Gaussian RDF. We extend this result to vector Gaussian AR sources of any finite order. Further, we show that for infinite dimensional vector Gaussian AR sources of any finite order, the NRDF coincides with the zero-delay RDF. Our theoretical framework is corroborated with a simulation example.
