Abstract:Let $q$ be a prime power and $F_4(q)$ be the Chevalley group of type $F_4$ over a finite field with $q$ elements. Marcelo--Shinoda (1995) determined the values of the unipotent characters of $F_4(q)$ on all unipotent elements, extending earlier work by Kawanaka and Lusztig to small characteristics. Assuming that $q$ is a power of~$2$, we explain how to construct the complete character table of~$F_4(q)$.

Abstract:We show how the character tables of the groups $E_6(q)_{\text{ad}}$ and ${^2\!E}_6(q)_{\text{ad}}$ can be constructed, where $q$ is a power of~$2$. (Partial results are also obtained for any $q$ not divisible by~$3$.) This is based on previous work by Hetz, Lusztig, Malle, Mizuno and Shoji, plus computations using Michel's version of {\sf CHEVIE}. We also need some general results that are specific to semisimple groups which are not of simply connected type. A further crucial ingredient is the determination of the values of the unipotent characters on unipotent elements for groups of type $D_4$ and $D_5$ (in characteristic~$2$).

Abstract:Based on a presentation of $\mathcal{C}_n$ and the help of [GAP], we construct the character table of the Clifford group $\mathcal{C}_n$ for $n=1,2,3$. As an application, we can efficiently decompose the (higher power of) tensor product of the matrix representation in those cases. Our results recover some known results in [HWW, WF] and reveal some new phenomena. We prove that when $n \geq 3$, (1) the trivial character is the only linear character for $\mathcal{C}_n$ and hence $\mathcal{C}_n$ equals to its commutator subgroup, (2) the $n$-qubit Pauli group $\mathcal{P}_n$ is the only proper non-trivial normal subgroup of $\mathcal{C}_n$, (3) the matrix representation $\mathcal{M}_{2^n}$ is a faithful representation for $\mathcal{C}_n$. As a byproduct, we give a presentation of the finite symplectic group $Sp(2n,2)$ in terms of generators and relations.

Abstract:We provide a new branching rule from the general linear group $GL_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ to the symplectic group $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ by establishing a simple algorithm which gives rise to a bijection from the set of semistandard tableaux of a fixed shape to a disjoint union of several copies of sets of symplectic tableaux of various shapes. The algorithm arises from representation theory of a quantum symmetric pair of type $A\mathrm{II}_{2n-1}$, which is a $q$-analogue of the classical symmetric pair $(\mathfrak{gl}_{2n}(\mathbb{C}), \mathfrak{sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C}))$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number. We compute the trivial source character tables of finite Frobenius groups $G$ with an abelian Frobenius complement $H$ and an elementary abelian Frobenius kernel of order $p^2$. More precisely, we deal with all infinite families of such groups which occur in the two extremal cases for the fusion of $p$-subgroups: the case in which there exists exactly one $G$-conjugacy class of non-trivial cyclic $p$-subgroups, and the case in which there exist exactly $p+1$ distinct $G$-conjugacy classes of non-trivial cyclic $p$-subgroups.

Abstract:Character tables represent an invaluable tool for applications of group theory in physics and chemistry. They are useful, among other applications, to carry out the projection of functions which later on constitute the basis to simplify the calculations and establish the selection rules. However, the physical interpretation of the character tables as quantum numbers is not visible. In this contribution we prove that the characters are indeed conserved quantities associated with the discrete symmetry of a molecule. In the process, the eigenfunction method of symmetry projection emerges in natural form, an approach not discussed in traditional textbooks. A non trivial example involving the octahedral group is presented.

Abstract:We develop a $\mathtt{q}$-analogue of the theory of conjugation equivariant $\mathcal D$-modules on a complex reductive group $G$. In particular, we define quantum Hotta-Kashiwara modules and compute their endomorphism algebras. We use the Schur-Weyl functor of the second author, and develop tools from the corresponding double affine Hecke algebra to study this category in the cases $G=GL_N$ and $SL_N$. Our results also have an interpretation in skein theory (explored further in a sequel paper), namely a computation of the $GL_N$ and $SL_N$-skein algebra of the 2-torus.

Abstract:In this note we announce some results extending our recent work with A. Toufik on the free-fermion point q=i of the Haldane-Shastry chain to the case with an even number N of sites. The resulting long-range version of the Heisenberg XX chain may be viewed as a model of fermions with extended gl(1|1) symmetry. Unlike for odd N, the conserved charges are nilpotent and exhibit Jordan blocks.

Abstract:The classical Maass Spezialschar is a Hecke-stable subspace of the level one holomorphic Siegel modular forms of genus two, i.e., on $\mathrm{Sp}_4$, cut out by certain linear relations between the Fourier coefficients. It is a theorem of Andrianov, Maass, and Zagier, that the classical Maass Spezialschar is exactly equal to the space of Saito-Kurokawa lifts. We study an analogous space of quaternionic modular forms on split $\mathrm{SO}_8$, and prove the analogue of the Andrianov-Maass-Zagier theorem. Our main tool for proving this theorem is the development of a theory of a Fourier-Jacobi expansion of quaternionic modular forms on orthogonal groups.

Abstract:We continue studying properties of semisimple Hopf algebras $H$ over algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0 resulting from their generalized character tables. We show that the generalized character table of $H$ reflect normal left coideal subalgebras of $H.$ These are the Hopf analogues of normal subgroups in the sense that they arise from Hopf quotients. We apply these ideas to prove Hopf analogues of known results in group theory. Among the rest we prove that columns of the character table are orthogonal and that all entries are algebraic integers. We analyze `semi kernels' and their relations to the character table. We prove a full analogue of the Burnside-Brauer theorem for almost cocommutative $H.$ We also prove the Hopf algebras analogue of the following (Burnside) theorem: If G is a non-abelian simple group then $\{1\}$ is the only conjugacy class of G which has prime power order.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute the conjugacy classes and the list of irreducible characters of GSp(4,q), where q is odd. We also determine precisely which irreducible characters are non-cuspidal and which are generic. These characters are then used to compute dimensions of certain subspaces of fixed vectors of smooth admissible non-supercuspidal representations of GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero with residue field of order q.

Abstract:We define an action of the Weyl group W of a simple Lie algebra g on a completion of the ring Y, which is the codomain of the q-character homomorphism of the corresponding quantum affine algebra U_q(g^). We prove that the subring of W-invariants of Y is precisely the ring of q-characters, which is isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of the category of finite-dimensional representations of U_q(g^). This resolves an old puzzle in the theory of q-characters. We also identify the screening operators, which were previously used to describe the ring of q-characters, as the subleading terms of simple reflections from W in a certain limit. Our results have already found applications to the study of the category O of representations of the Borel subalgebra of U_q(g^) in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.13256" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.13256">arXiv:2312.13256</a> and to the categorification of cluster algebras in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2401.04616" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.04616">arXiv:2401.04616</a>.

Saxl conjecture and the tensor square of unipotent characters of GL(n,q)

Abstract:We know from Letellier that if for some triple of partitions the corresponding Kronecker coefficient is non-zero then the corresponding multiplicities for unipotent characters of GL(n,q) is also non-zero. A conjecture of Saxl says that the tensor square of an irreducible character of the symmetric group corresponding to a staircase partition contains all the irreducible characters. Therefore Saxl conjecture implies its analogue for unipotent characters. In this paper we prove the analogue of Saxl conjecture for unipotent characters and we describe conjecturally the set of all partitions for which the tensor square of the associated unipotent character contains all the unipotent characters.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a categorical double quantum Heisenberg action on the representation category of finite classical groups $\mathrm{O}_{2n+1}(q)$, $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(q)$ and $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}_{2n}(q)$ with $q$ odd. Over a field of characteristic zero or characteristic $\ell$ with $\ell\nmid q(q-1)$, we deduce a categorical action of a Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}'_{I_+}\oplus\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}'_{I_-}$ on the representation category of finite classical groups. We show that the colored weight functions $\mathbb{O}^+(u)(\bullet)$, $\mathbb{O}^-(v)(\bullet)$ and uniform projection can distinguish all irreducible characters of finite classical groups. In particular, the colored weight functions are complete invariants of quadratic unipotent characters of finite classical groups. We also show that using the theta correspondence and extra symmetries of categorical double quantum Heisenberg action, the Kac-Moody action on the Grothendieck group of the whole category can be determined explicitly.

Abstract:In order to tackle the problem of generically determining the character tables of the finite groups of Lie type $\mathbf{G}(q)$ associated to a connected reductive group $\mathbf{G}$ over $\overline{\mathbb F}_p$, Lusztig developed the theory of character sheaves in the 1980s. The subsequent work of Lusztig and Shoji in principle reduces this problem to specifying certain roots of unity. The situation is particularly well understood as far as character values at unipotent elements are concerned. We complete the computation of the values of unipotent characters at unipotent elements for the groups $\mathbf{G}(q)$ where $\mathbf{G}$ is the simple group of type $E_8$, by specifying the aforementioned roots of unity for all prime powers $q$. We also resolve this task for the groups ${^2\!E}_6(q)$ when $q$ is a power of $p=2$. Our results thus conclude the project of computing the values of unipotent characters at unipotent elements for the simple exceptional groups of Lie type.

Higher Specht bases and $q$-series for the cohomology rings of certain Hessenberg varieties

Abstract:It is conjectured (following the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture) that the cohomology rings of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties yield permutation representations, but the decompositions of the modules are only known in some cases. For the Hessenberg function $h=(h(1),n,\ldots,n)$, the structure of the cohomology ring was determined by Abe, Horiguchi, and Masuda in 2017. We define two new bases for this cohomology ring, one of which is a higher Specht basis, and the other of which is a permutation basis. We also examine the transpose Hessenberg variety, indexed by the Hessenberg function $h' = ((n-1)^{n-m},n^m)$, and show that analogous results hold. Further, we give combinatorial bijections between the monomials in the new basis and sets of $P$-tableaux, motivated by the work of Gasharov, illustrating the connections between the $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action on these cohomology rings and the Schur expansion of chromatic symmetric functions.

Abstract:We study the even characters of $\widehat{su(2)}$ conformal field theories (CFTs) at admissible fractional levels obtained from the difference of the highest weight characters in the unflavoured limit. We show that admissible even character vectors arise only in three special classes of admissible fractional levels which include the threshold levels, the positive half-odd integer levels, and the isolated level at -$5/4$. Among them, we show that the even characters of the half-odd integer levels map to the difference of characters of $\widehat{su(2)}_{4N+4}$, with $N\in\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, although we prove that they do not correspond to rational CFTs. The isolated level characters maps to characters of two subsectors with $\widehat{so(5)}_1$ and $\widehat{su(2)}_1$ current algebras. Furthermore, for the $\widehat{su(2)}_1$ subsector of the isolated level, we introduce discrete flavour fugacities. The threshold levels saturate the admissibility bound and their even characters have previously been shown to be proportional to the unflavoured characters of integrable representations in $\widehat{su(2)}_{4N}$ CFTs, where $N\in\mathbb{Z}_{> 0}$ and we reaffirm this result. Except at the three classes of fractional levels, we find special inadmissible characters called quasi-characters which are nice vector valued modular functions but with $q$-series coefficients violating positivity but not integrality.
