Abstract:A new DCT coding method based on edge information measure and adaptive quadtree segmentation was proposed to enhance compression ratio of DCT coding and transmission efficiency.The quadtree algorithm was used to segment the image adaptively according to the pixels type and thresholds.Then DCT was applied to each block with different compression ratio.The larger the block size is,the higher the compression ratio we take.The simulation experiment shows that the compression ratio and SNR carried by transmitting 1 bit(SNBR) is bigger than 30 % of nonadaptive method.

Abstract:In this paper, Support vector machine (SVM) with adaptive parameters is proposed to improve the compression performance Of standard SVMs for image coding. The basic idea is to assign different weight values to different discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients such that the SVM training algorithm. learns the decision?, surface according to the relative importance of DCT coefficients in the training data set. The weight values used in SVM training are based on the energy distribution characteristic of each image subblock. Simulation results show it achieves better reconstruction quality than the standard JPEG and SVM-based compression algorithms.

Abstract:Aiming at the coding of prediction errors based on the Bayer pattern images,an effective and adaptive arithmetic coder is designed.Generally,a probability distribution of the prediction errors forms Laplacian distribution with zero mean.To reduce computing complexity of estimation of the error probability,the error is classified into quantization regions by minimizing mean square error,and a table is designed which lists the error quantization regions and corresponding probability with 3 significance bits.Experiment result shows that the proposed arithmetic coder is more effective than Golomb coder.

Abstract:In this paper, a predictive model for compression of mosaic image with Bayer pattern is proposed. It consists of TFNN neural network predictor and adaptive correction part based on context. As in JPEG-LS, the adaptive part of the predictor is context-based and it is used to ldquocancelrdquo the integer part of the offset due to the TFNN predictor. In the meantime, we propose a context quantization approach that achieves high coding efficiency. Compared with existing methods of CFA image lossless compression, the performance of proposed method is apparently the best.

Abstract:An efficient discrete cosine transform technique using a new adaptive feature for bandwidth compression is described. Taking account of human visual characteristics and transform coefficient statistics, the higher activity region is further classified into four subclasses according to four proposed basic patterns, while the lower activity region is assigned to four subclasses according to its AC-energy (image activity) distribution. Computer simulations shows that the proposed adaptive coder exhibits a performance improvement of 1 dB or more over conventional adaptive coders at the same coding rates

Abstract:In this paper, a sequential lossless compression of raw data from image sensor with Bayer pattern is proposed. Inspired by model of JPEG-LS, the proposed encoder consists of fuzzy neural network predictor, adaptive correction part based on context and adaptive arithmetic coder. As in JPEG-LS, it is a empirically observed that the global statistics of residuals from the ANN fixed predictor in raw data, which effectively exploits structural redundancies between mosaic-like color components, are well-modeled by a TSGD centered at zero. In the meantime, we propose a context determination approach based on causal interpolation that achieves high coding efficiency. Consequently, we can encode mosaic images on the fly at low complexity level. Compared with existing methods of lossless compression for Bayer raw data, the performance of proposed method is apparently the best.
Novel Algorithm for Context-Adaptive Variable Length Coding

Abstract:A novel algorithm for entropy coding was introduced to code block after discrete cosine transform and quantization in conventional video compression. The algorithm was based on context-adaptive variable length coding(CAVLC) of H.264.Level and run were coded thus separately using inerratic code tables.All code words could be obtained through a few simple calculations avoiding the look-up table,which substantially reduced random-access memory(RAM) requirement at encoder or decoder systems. The algorithm selected different code tables according to the known coding information,thus ensuring the context-adaptive performance.Three ways were adopted to code run according to the number of zero coefficients in block,which improved the compression efficiency.Simulation results show that the algorithm achieves excellent performance of compression in various coding conditions.

Abstract:Existing compression schemes usually scan an image by a fixed way.However,each image has its own characteristics,which makes it difficult to obtain a good coding performance with a fixed scanning man-ner.To solve this problem,an adaptive scanning-based compression method is proposed.Firstly,the wavelet transform is performed.Then the scanning order among the subbands is determined by the content of the im-age.Secondly,for the scanning of a subband,in order to preserving the texture information as much as possi-ble,the scanning method is designed with the considering of the characteristic of the subband.Finally,the bina-ry tree code is exploited to encode the one-dimensional coefficient sequence.Experiments show that,under the same conditions,the proposed compression method is superior to JPEG2000 and the state-of-the-art compression methods based on binary tree coding adaptively (BTCA).

Abstract:Region of interest(ROI) coding technique could effectively compress the image data while the important information could also be saved well and it's very adaptive to the remote sensing image compression.The ROI needs to be defined in advance in the existing ROI coding algorithms.So the application of the ROI coding algorithm is restricted when the ROI of remote sensing images couldn't be defined by the users in some conditions.To solve this problem,an automatic ROI coding algorithm based on the characteristics of the remote sensing images is proposed.According to the application demands,the ROI could be detected automatically with higher accuracy firstly.Then,by the using of the minimum enclosing rectangle which is close to the shape of the target,the ROI automatic detection algorithm is combined with the ROI coding algorithm.At last,the ROI coding algorithm is also improved with the detected results based on the JPEG2000 standard.This algorithm can automatically compress the remote sensing images and has greater practicality.The algorithm efficiency is tested with the simulation results.

Abstract:Due to huge amount of visual surveillance data, network congestion and latency is serious problem for surveillance applications. To reduce the data amount, data compression must be done before transmission. Compressive sensing is a new theory that sample and compress signals at the same time with little cost of bandwidth and energy for transmission. While conventional compressive sensing requires huge memory to compress whole image at a time, block compressive sensing is introduced which compress image in block manners. Based on that, region enhancement block compressive sensing is proposed to adaptive compress image sequence and enhance the quality of region of interest with reduced data transmission. In proposed scheme, a target detecting algorithm is used to select the important blocks and more number of measurements is allocated on them. Thus the transmission amount is adaptively adjusted with the target in or out. The proposed scheme is evaluated in practical surveillance data and the result demonstrates that it adjusts the measurement ratio as needed and the quality of region of interest is enhanced at reduced measurement ratio.
Interest Point Detection based on Adaptive Ternary Coding

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive pixel ternary coding mechanism is proposed and a contrast invariant and noise resistant interest point detector is developed on the basis of this mechanism. Every pixel in a local region is adaptively encoded into one of the three statuses: bright, uncertain and dark. The blob significance of the local region is measured by the spatial distribution of the bright and dark pixels. Interest points are extracted from this blob significance measurement. By labeling the statuses of ternary bright, uncertain, and dark, the proposed detector shows more robustness to image noise and quantization errors. Moreover, the adaptive strategy for the ternary cording, which relies on two thresholds that automatically converge to the median of the local region in measurement, enables this coding to be insensitive to the image local contrast. As a result, the proposed detector is invariant to illumination changes. The state-of-the-art results are achieved on the standard datasets, and also in the face recognition application.

Abstract:Our study of a novel technique for adaptive image sequence coding is reported. The number of reference frames and the intervals between them are adjusted to improve the temporal compensability of the input video. The bits are distributed more efficiently on different frame types according to temporal and spatial complexity of the image scene. Experimental results show that this dynamic group-of-picture (GOP) structure coding scheme is not only feasible but also better than the conventional fixed GOP method in terms of perceptual quality and SNR. Abstract:Classical context modeling and binarization algorithms on multimedia do not fully exploit their spatial correlations under the sequential assumption. This paper proposes a novel entropy coding scheme incorporating regional context modeling (RCM) and dynamic Huffman binarization (DHB) for multimedia. RCM evaluates the context order with the line distance in Cartesian coordinate system, so that the 2-D spatial correlations can be directly exploited. RCM predicts each symbol with the weighted estimation based on the line distance and appearing frequency of its context, which coincides with the principle for context-based prediction. On the other hand, DHB is proposed to adaptively assign the length of bins based on the estimated probability of symbols for coding. For optimal prediction and coding, frequent symbols are assigned with short bins to constrain the propagation of code redundancy. Applied into multimedia coding, extensive experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves better coding performance than the benchmark coders.

Abstract:Ternary AIFV codes are almost instantaneous fixed-to-variable length codes, and are constructed based on two code trees. It is known that the redundancy of ternary AIFV codes is no more than one. In this paper, we provide a tighter upper bound on the redundancy of the ternary Huffman codes when the greatest probability of the source <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$p_{max}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> is known. As a result, the redundancy of the optimal ternary AIFV codes is bounded by Huffman codes, since the ternary Huffman codes can be seen as the special AIFV codes. To achieve lower redundancy than Huffman codes, we also propose a method to construct a class of ternary AIFV codes with time complexity <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$O(n)$ </tex-math></inline-formula> for <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$n$ </tex-math></inline-formula> source symbols. In addition, the redundancy of the proposed AIFV codes is analyzed and compared with Huffman codes. Analyzing the ternary AIFV codes constructed by the algorithm, we derive a tighter redundancy upper bounds under some conditions, which are superior to Huffman codes.
Rate-Distortion Optimized Skip Coding of Region Adaptive Hierarchical Transform Coefficients for MPEG G-PCC

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) point clouds are becoming more and more popular for representing 3D objects and scenes. Due to limited network bandwidth, efficient compression of 3D point clouds is crucial. To tackle this challenge, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is actively developing the Geometry-based Point Cloud Compression (G-PCC) standard, incorporating innovative methods to optimize compression, such as the Region-Adaptive Hierarchical Transform (RAHT) nestled within a layer-by-layer octree-tree structure. Nevertheless, a notable problem still exists in RAHT, i.e., the proportion of zero residuals in the last few RAHT layers leads to unnecessary bitrate consumption. To address this problem, we propose an adaptive skip coding method for RAHT, which adaptively determines whether to encode the residuals of the last several layers or not, thereby improving the coding efficiency. In addition, we propose a rate-distortion cost calculation method associated with an adaptive Lagrange multiplier. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves average Bjøntegaard rate improvements of -3.50%, -5.56%, and -4.18% for the Luma, Cb, and Cr components, respectively, on dynamic point clouds, when compared with the state-of-the-art G-PCC reference software under the common test conditions recommended by MPEG.

An Adaptive Predictive Coding Based on Image Segmentation for Lossless Compression of Ultrasonic Well Logging Images

Abstract:In recent years, image acquisition equipment has been widely adopted in the field of well logging. However, the data transfer rate of the logging system is limited by the transmission cables. Thus, data compression is necessary, but the common compression schemes were found to be not ideal for the well logging images, which have unique properties. In this paper, the properties of typical ultrasonic well logging images were studied and a suitable compression algorithm was proposed. Row and column correlation was found to be the major characteristic of the well logging images and 2-D correlation was not significant. Some subimages showed mainly row correlation and others showed mainly column correlation. According to this observation, an adaptive predictive lossless image compression coding based on image segmentation was proposed. An image is decomposed into blocks and pre-row or pre-column prediction is adaptively selected for every block to perform DPCM coding. An improved LZW algorithm is used to be encode the prediction error. Experiments showed that this coding scheme was able to achieve higher compression ratios than lossless JPEG and JPEG\|LS for the ultrasonic well logging image, while the complexity was comparable. The algorithm is self\|adaptive and thus no code table is needed. Since every block is independently processed, the error propagation problem associated with normal DPCM coding schemes is avoided.
