Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Abstract:Molecular plasmonics, the area which deals with the interactions between surface plasmons and molecules, has received enormous interest in fundamental research and found numerous technological applications. Plasmonic metamaterials, which offer rich opportunities to control the light intensity, field polarization, and local density of electromagnetic states on subwavelength scales, provide a versatile platform to enhance and tune light-molecule interactions. A variety of applications, including spontaneous emission enhancement, optical modulation, optical sensing, and photoactuated nanochemistry, have been reported by exploiting molecular interactions with plasmonic metamaterials. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the developments of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials. After a brief introduction to the optical properties of plasmonic metamaterials and relevant fabrication approaches, we discuss light-molecule interactions in plasmonic metamaterials in both weak and strong coupling regimes. We then highlight the exploitation of molecules in metamaterials for applications ranging from emission control and optical modulation to optical sensing. The role of hot carriers generated in metamaterials for nanochemistry is also discussed. Perspectives on the future development of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials conclude the review. The use of molecules in combination with designer metamaterials provides a rich playground both to actively control metamaterials using molecular interactions and, in turn, to use metamaterials to control molecular processes.

Abstract:Plasmonic sensing has been an important multidisciplinary research field and has been extensively used in detection of trace molecules in chemistry and biology. The sensing techniques are typically based on surface-enhanced spectroscopies and surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). This review article deals with some recent advances in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors and SPR sensors using either localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) or propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The advances discussed herein present some improvements in SERS and SPR sensing, as well as a new type of nanowire-based SPP sensor.

Abstract:Surface plasmons are coherent and collective electron oscillations confined at the dielectric–metal interface. Benefitting from the inherent subwavelength nature of spatial profile, surface plasmons can greatly accumulate the optical field and energy on the nanoscale and dramatically enhance various light–matter interactions. The properties of surface plasmons are strongly related to materials and structures, so that metals, semiconductors and two-dimensional materials with various morphologies and structures can have alternating plasmonic wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet, visible, near infrared to far infrared. Because the electric field can be enhanced by orders of magnitude within plasmonic structures, various light–matter interaction processes including fluorescence, Raman scattering, heat generation, photoacoustic effects, photocatalysis, nonlinear optical conversion, and solar energy conversion, can be significantly enhanced and these have been confirmed by both theoretical, computational and experimental studies. In this review, we present a concise introduction and discussion of various plasmon-enhanced light–matter interaction processes. We discuss the physical and chemical principles, influencing factors, computational and theoretical methods, and practical applications of these plasmon-enhanced processes and phenomena, with a hope to deliver guidelines for constructing future high-performance plasmonic devices and technologies.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons are electromagnetic waves propagating on the surface of a metal. Thanks to subwavelength confinement to the surface, they can concentrate optical energy on the micrometer or even nanometer scale, enabling new applications in bio-sensing, optical interconnects, and nonlinear optics, where small footprint and strong field concentration is of the essence. The major obstacle in developing plasmonic applications is dissipative loss, which limits the propagation length of surface plasmons and broadens the bandwidth of surface-plasmon resonances. Here we present a new analysis of plasmonic materials and geometries that fully considers the trade-off between the propagation length and the degree of confinement of surface plasmon polaritons and allows a fair comparison between different substrates.

Abstract:Metallic nanostructures with nanogap features are proved to be highly effective building blocks for plasmonic systems, as they can provide ultrastrong electromagnetic (EM) fields and controllable optical properties. A wide range of fields, including surface enhanced spectroscopy, sensing, imaging, nonlinear optics, optical trapping, and metamaterials, are benefited from these enhanced EM fields. This review outlines the latest development of the fabrication methods for nanogap structures (metal nanoparticle assembly, nanosphere lithography, electron beam lithography (EBL), focused ion beam (FIB) lithography, oblique angle shadow evaporation, edge lithography, and so on), followed by a summary of their optical applications. The present review will inspire more ingenious designs and fabrications of plasmonic nanogap structures with lithography‐free fabrication techniques, and promote their applications in optics and electronics. Plasmonic nanogap structures are proved to be highly effective building blocks for plasmonic systems. They can provide ultrastrong electromagnetic fields and controllable optical properties. A wide range of fields, including surface enhanced spectroscopy, sensing, imaging, nonlinear optics, optical trapping, and metamaterials, are benefited from these enhanced electric fields.

Abstract:The plasmonic nanolaser is a class of lasers with the physical dimensions free from the optical diffraction limit. In the past decade, progress in performance, applications, and mechanisms of plasmonic nanolasers has increased dramatically. We review this advance and offer our prospectives on the remaining challenges ahead, concentrating on the integration with nanochips. In particular, we focus on the qualifications for electrical pumping, energy consumption, and ultrafast modulation. At last, we evaluate the strategies for on-chip source construction design and further threshold reduction to achieve a long-term room-temperature electrically pumped plasmonic nanolaser, the ultimate goal toward practical applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The localized surface plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles is the collective oscillation of electrons on particle surface. The localized electromagnetic interaction brings a series of novel functions and applications. Plasmonic nanomaterials have been the significant part of nanophotonics, since its' localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can focus incident phonons on the nanoscale surface. The unique plasmonic property is highly sensitive to their size, shape, coupling between particles as well as local dielectric environment. These properties can be utilized for the development of new biosensing and bioimaging applications. To date, many LSPR sensing strategies have been developed with outstanding measurement capabilities, enabling detection down to the single-molecule level, including LSPR-based sensing, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, metal-enhanced fluorescence, dark-field light-scattering, metal-mediated fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Moreover, the unique optical stability of plasmonic nanoparticles enables them as ideal probes in cellular imaging. Here, recent examples on application of plasmonic nanostructures in sensing and bioimaging are summarized, and perspectives are provided as well.

Abstract:Low-profile patterned plasmonic surfaces are synergized with a broad class of silicon microstructures to greatly enhance near-field nanoscale imaging, sensing, and energy harvesting coupled with far-field free-space detection. This concept has a clear impact on several key areas of interest for the MEMS community, including but not limited to ultra-compact microsystems for sensitive detection of small number of target molecules, and surface devices for optical data storage, micro-imaging and displaying. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art in plasmonic theory as well as derive design guidance for plasmonic integration with microsystems, fabrication techniques, and selected applications in biosensing, including refractive-index based label-free biosensing, plasmonic integrated lab-on-chip systems, plasmonic near-field scanning optical microscopy and plasmonics on-chip systems for cellular imaging. This paradigm enables low-profile conformal surfaces on microdevices, rather than bulk material or coatings, which provide clear advantages for physical, chemical and biological-related sensing, imaging, and light harvesting, in addition to easier realization, enhanced flexibility, and tunability.

Abstract:Plasmonics and metamaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past decade, owing to the revolutionary impacts that they bring to both the fundamental physics and practical applications in multiple disciplines. Although the two fields initially advanced along their individual trajectories in parallel, they started to interfere with each other when metamaterials reached the optical regime. The dynamic interplay between plasmonics and metamaterials has generated a number of innovative concepts and approaches, which are impossible with either area alone. This review presents the fundamentals, recent advances and future perspectives in the emerging field of plasmonic metamaterials, aiming to open up new exciting opportunities for nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are travelling surface waves that have shown promise for applications in nanophotonics as they provide a direct route toward photon-mediated electrical signal generation – a central paradigm for speeding up and scaling down photonic elements. SPP waves have also generated fundamental interest due to their high-field strength and sub-wavelength confinement, properties that have enabled the surface-enhanced Raman effect. Over the last decade, photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) has emerged as a pioneering technique for imaging surface electric fields through ultrashort laser pulse mediated electron emission and has therefore become an indispensable tool for characterizing plasmonic phenomena at interfaces in a variety of materials. PEEM offers nanometer spatial resolution and femtosecond temporal resolution, allowing SPPs to be prepared, monitored, and manipulated on the nanometer-femtosecond scale. Through a brief review of recent reports, we aim to introduce PEEM-based SPP imaging and manipulation modalities and highlight their utility in the context of emerging nanoscale and quantum materials science advancements.

Abstract:Plasmonics, focusing on the fundamental researches and novel applications of plasmons, has rapidly developed as an important branch of nano-optics in recent years. Essentially, surface plasmons are highly localized collective electron excitation at a metal-dielectric interface. This elementary excitation can be strongly coupled with electromagnetic fields, which enable one to collect, manipulate, and emit micron-scale optical signals through using nano-scale structures. Recently, the quantum properties of plasmons have received tremendous attention as nanofabrication techniques approach to the quantum limit. On this scale, with the unique intrinsic properties of plasmons, i.e. the particle-like nature of photons and wave-like nature of electrons, quantum plasmonics exhibits very attractive prospects in quantum information, high-efficiency optoelectronic devices, and highly sensitive detection, etc. Here in this paper, we review the development of quantum plasmonics in recent years, by introducing the research progress of relevant theories and the experimental breakthroughes. Some perspectives of the future development of quantum plasmonics are also outlined.

Abstract:Since the 2005 issue on "Synthesis and Plasmonic Properties of Nanostructures" in MRS Bulletin, significant progress has been made with respect to the synthesis, structure–property relationship, and application of plasmonic nanomaterials. With a number of selected examples, here we provide a brief account of recent demonstrations and developments. We start with three syntheses to highlight the precision and power of chemical methods in fabricating plasmonic nanomaterials with diverse, well-defined, and controllable sizes, shapes, morphologies, and structures. We then showcase some innovative applications based upon plasmonic nanomaterials, including self-assembly, plasmonic catalysis, touch-screen display, metamaterial engineering, and photothermal heating for water evaporation. Finally, we offer some perspectives on the existing challenges and opportunities in pushing plasmonic nanomaterials to the next level of success.

Revolutionlizing Plasmonic Platform via Magnetic Field-Assisted Confined Ultrafast Laser Deposition of High-Density, Uniform, and Ultrafine Nanoparticle Arrays

Abstract:The remarkable capabilities of 2D plasmonic surfaces in controlling optical waves have garnered significant attention. However, the challenge of large-scale manufacturing of uniform, well-aligned, and tunable plasmonic surfaces has hindered their industrialization. To address this, we present a groundbreaking tunable plasmonic platform design achieved through magnetic field (MF) assisted ultrafast laser direct deposition (MAPLD) in air. Through precise control of metal nanoparticles (NPs), with Cobalt (Co) serving as the model material, employing a magnetic field (MF), and fine-tuning ultrafast laser parameters, we have effectively converted coarse and non-uniform NPs into densely packed, uniform, and ultrafine NPs(~3nm). This revolutionary advancement results in the creation of customizable plasmonic 'hot spots,' which play a pivotal role in Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors. The profound impact of this designable plasmonic platform lies in its close association with plasmonic resonance and energy enhancement. When the plasmonic nanostructures resonate with incident light, they generate intense local electromagnetic fields, thus vastly increasing the Raman scattering signal. This enhancement leads to an outstanding 2 to 18-fold boost in SERS performance and unparalleled sensing sensitivity down to 10-10 M. Notably, the plasmonic platform also demonstrates robustness, retaining its sensing capability even after undergoing 50 cycles of rinsing and re-loading of chemicals. Moreover, this work adheres to green manufacturing standards, making it an efficient and environmentally friendly method for customizing plasmonic 'hot spots' in SERS devices. Our study not only achieves the formation of high-density, uniform, and ultrafine nanoparticle arrays on a tunable plasmonic platform but also showcases the profound relation between plasmonic resonance and energy enhancement. The outstanding results observed in SERS sensors further emphasize the immense potential of this technology for energy-related applications, including photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and clean water, propelling us closer to a sustainable and cleaner future.

Abstract:Plasmonics, which deals with the unique optical properties of metallic and semiconductor nanostructure, is one of the most fascinating and fast-moving areas of photonics. Its board scale research in the visible, infrared, terahertz and microwave frequencies has driven by the advances in the micro/nano fabrication and the computational simulation technologies, as well as the potential applications in areas of high sensitivity bio-chemical sensing, sub-wavelength light-guiding, near-field microcopy, and nanolithography. Especially, the development of the artificial metamaterial has laid the good foundation for the material and devices in the terahertz frequency range, which is barely responded by the nature materials, and furthermore, has promoted the progress of terahertz surface plasmonics. In this paper the generation, propagation, new applications, and perspective of terahetz surface plamonics are reviewed and discussed.
