Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the perceived impact on the health and wellbeing experienced by amateur community choir singers as rehearsals moved from face-to-face to online during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 26 volunteer participants from an amateur community choir in Scotland completed an online questionnaire. An online focus group discussion followed with seven of the participants. Results reveal many positive impacts on the health and wellbeing of singers for both face-to-face and online group singing rehearsals. Each mode of rehearsal impacts positively in different ways, advocating the use of both to suit individual singers’ needs and aspirations. Significant drawbacks were identified that provide possible avenues to further improve the experiences of singers in both face-to-face and online singing rehearsals.

Abstract:This paper builds upon the work of Hogan (2016, 2021) by casting a historical lens on the importance of emotional connectivity to place in Cork through a case study of the city’s most famous musician: the blues/rock guitarist Rory Gallagher. Specifically, it investigates how sense of place and Corkonian values are narratively produced and depicted in the Irish Tour ’74 documentary. It argues that the documentary portrays County Cork as a close-knit place with a deep sense of community and Gallagher as the physical representation of these values. Analysis of specific scenes also highlights the significance of localist expressions of identity and localised forms of prestige for Gallagher, as well as the way in which his songs can be renarrativised to create new meanings that either accentuate his yearning for home or promote a form of hybridised parochialism that centres around Belfast as his 'second home'. Abstract:Dumbarton Rock represents elements of ancient and medieval Scottish history and has witnessed the prosperity (and decline) of industry. Meanwhile, the Rock plays an important role in Scottish climbing. Its sustainable development has caused much concern for those who love and care about it. Therefore, this research aims to study the meanings of the Rock from the perspective of rock climbing, through analyzing eight interviewees' experiences. It was found that the special location of the Rock seems to create a place of short-time isolation and liberty to the climbers. Its history and intensive difficulty also improve the climbers' experience and makes it a great attraction for them. Dumbarton Rock sits at the nexus of 'lifestyle'/'adventure'/'extreme' sport and Scottish heritage, and this article helps to provide a means by which to pursue qualitative research on existential authenticity in locations where sports tourism overlaps with that of heritage.

"You've got to be focused at all times, ready for what's going to happen next," says Napier, a GP at Bourtreehill Medical Practice in Irvine and GP director for year four at the University of Glasgow Medical School.As with being a doctor, an important aspect of refereeing is "being able to communicate and connect with different types of people," he says.He has refereed over 1500 games, including at the highest level of Scottish football, the Scottish Premiership. Abstract:The Cranberries have been considered to be one of the major rock bands from Ireland. From 1993 until 2019, they released eight studio albums, and hit the world charts with songs such as “Linger” and “Zombie”, before disbanding following singer Dolores O’Riordan’s death. After two very successful and critically acclaimed records, The Cranberries’ third release To The Faithful Departed (1996) became the target of harsh criticism, as the press considered it to be lyrically shallow. As a result, The Cranberries’ third album has been traditionally analysed in that way. This paper aims at providing a new, comprehensive analysis of The Cranberries’ To The Faithful Departed by bringing the band’s then recently achieved stardom into focus, as such an experience had a significant impact on the four members’ emotional state, and hence in the songwriting. Thus, it is hoped that the present article will provide a greater understanding of how the lyrics of The Cranberries’ 1996 album reflect the struggles of a band achieving celebrity status in the music industry. This essay can be viewed as innovative for two reasons: firstly, there has been a lack of academic research on The Cranberries, and secondly, it offers a new reading of their third record To The Faithful Departed.

Abstract:Since graduating from college as an aspiring structural biologist 30 years ago, I have followed progress in the field with intermittent but genuine interest. To me, structural biology represents 'the road not taken' 1 , as I have instead dedicated my career to other pursuits. Here, I reflect on how keeping in touch with a field I left behind long ago continues to bring me joy and fulfillment. Despite no longer working in structural biology, I felt an unexpected connection to it on 9 October, when I heard the Nobel Prize in Chemistry announcement on the radio as I prepared breakfast. Three researchers — David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper — had been awarded the prize for pioneering work in protein design and structure prediction. I didn't recognize the names at that point, but I knew of Rosetta and AlphaFold. My mind drifted to memories of staring at stereo protein diagrams, trying — and failing — to see the 3D structures. Then, I went on with my day.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A great deal of the harmony and voice leading in the British rock group Radiohead's recorded output between 1997 and 2011 can be heard as elaborating either traditional tonal structures or establishing pitch centricity through purely contrapuntal means. This mode of hearing Radiohead's music departs from theories of rock harmony that (1) focus on fretboard‐specific melodic gestures, (2) highlight the role of modal scalar collections or (3) associate pitch centricity with hypermetric emphasis. Willingness to hear Radiohead's contrapuntal practice – a keyboard‐centred affair in this mature period – in such a prolongational way demands hearing non‐tonic phrase beginnings and even entire formal sections in keys for which no tonic chord is present. Graphic techniques ultimately derived from Schenker (though adapted for rock music by Everett, Burns and Nobile) illuminate this comparatively conservative way of hearing rock harmony. Under this rigorous model, which privileges descending fifth motions and melodically fluent contrapuntal structure, Radiohead's 1997–2011 corpus reveals three distinct systems of voice leading and harmony: functional tonal, functional modal and contrapuntal.

Chancing your arm: the meaning of risk in rock climbing

Abstract:This paper explores the relationship between risk-taking and risk management by examining meanings attached to risk by a group of lifestyle sport participants. Drawing from in-depth interviews with male and female rock-climbers in the UK, it outlines the ways in which climbers' construction of risk and risk management were intimately related to broader discourses of risk and self-reflexivity in contemporary western society. 1 Analysing the data through reference to Douglas' work on risk and identity2 shows how climbers' discursive practices surrounding risk management are intrinsically related to their assumed identity as a competent, experienced and good climber. Consequently, this group of climbers established their credentials not by daring or risk-taking actions on the rock face but instead by demonstrating their competence in the way they managed and controlled risk.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:It is common practice among young astrophysicists these days to invest research time conservatively in mainstream ideas that have already been explored extensively in the literature. This tendency is driven by peer pressure and job market prospects, and is occasionally encouraged by senior researchers. Although the same phenomenon existed in past decades, it is alarmingly more prevalent today because a growing fraction of observational and theoretical projects are pursued in large groups with rigid research agendas. In addition, the emergence of a ``standard model'' in cosmology (albeit with unknown dark components) offers secure ``bonds'' for a safe investment of research time. In this short essay, which summarizes a banquet lecture at a recent conference, I give examples for both safe and risky topics in astrophysics (which I split into categories of ``bonds,'' ``stocks,'' and ``venture capital''), and argue that young researchers should always allocate a small fraction of their academic portfolio to innovative projects with risky but potentially highly profitable returns. In parallel, selection and promotion committees must find new strategies for rewarding candidates with creative thinking.

“To Thine Own Self Be True”: One Music Educator’s Transition from Higher Education Faculty Member to High School Teacher

Abstract:This dramaturgically-inspired telling of an autoethnographic narrative evokes theatre-in-the-round imagery to depict one of the two researcher’s significant and elective professional transition from holding a tenure-track university faculty position to high school music teaching, covering a one-and-a-half year time span. Four interrelated theoretical frameworks are used to interpret data, combining existing models with novel concepts: culturally scripted selves; aspects of selfhood informed by cultural scripts; performative markers of tertiary music education; and processes of concealment. Metathemes of time, workload/agency, and support developed and shaped data analysis. Recommendations for the field include changes in: mentorship models, definitions of success/happiness, cultural norms, and worklife balance. The story and our study of it is presented as a play in a critical, published format (non-acting edition). It consists of an Authors’ Note (including General Comments and Cast of Characters); a Play in two Acts, each with three Scenes; a Critical Analysis (including Review of Literature, Theoretical Framework, Discussion, and Implications), and an Appendix explaining research method.

Abstract:Taking inspiration from a press article comparing doom metal and New Age music, I explore individualism and magic in these musical cultures, reflecting on the 'dirty, soothing secret' suggested in that article's title. I trace the loosely defined characteristics of New Age music in the limited academic research on the topic, before situating the music in the wider New Age milieu which centres around the epistemological authority of the seeking self among diverse spiritual resources. Then, I examine the claims made about metal in the news article, drawing out themes which also relate to individualism and magic. Finally, I return to the concepts of the dirty, the soothing and the secret, arguing that these are not merely incidental aspects of the mainstream reception of New Age and metal music, but in fact can be understood as contributing to the magical potential of such music for listeners.

Abstract:This essay considers Ray Davies in the context of the English Romantic art tradition. By connecting Davies with Romantics like William Wordsworth, John Keats, William Blake, and Charles Lamb, this essay explores Davies's language, characterizations, themes, development of a personal mythology, use of antitheses, and sense of “negative capability.” The influence of the English art school on Davies is also explored as is his work in later years which suggests Blake's apocalyptic vision and Shelley's spirituality.
Electric ladyland : women and rock culture

Abstract:With the explosion of rock music in the mid-1960s, women arrived-as performers, critics, and fans. While operating in radically different ways within rock culture, female musicians, journalists, and groupies rewrote women's roles on and off the stage in the 1960s and 1970s. Electric Ladyland is a social and cultural history of this formative era in rock and roll, examining how the changing roles of women were intertwined with the evolution of the music. Articles and reviews from Rolling Stone and the Village Voice provide a window on a time when female musicians such as Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell battled sexism from concert promoters and mainly male reviewers. Feminist rock journalists, however, were coming into their own. In particular, Ellen Willis, music critic for the New Yorker, and Lillian Roxon, author of the influential Rock Encyclopedia, transformed the way society perceived sometimes marginalized female performers. The groupie was born at the same time, and Rhodes devotes considerable attention to the rise of this phenomenon. Through journalistic accounts as well as personal interviews with groupies of the 1960s and 1970s, she explores these women's dual legacy of self-assertion and promiscuous behavior that resonates to this day through the popularity of such films as Almost Famous. Deeply informed by critical media studies and drawing on diverse and rich sources, Electric Ladyland assesses the lasting effects of cultural representations on female sexuality and gender roles.
