Abstract:The collective Raman cooling of a trapped two-component Fermi gas is analyzed. We develop the quantum master equation that describes the collisions and the laser cooling, in the festina lente regime, where the heating due to photon reabsorption can be neglected. The numerical results based on Monte Carlo simulations show, that three-dimensional temperatures of the order of 0.008 T_F can be achieved. We analyze the heating related to the background losses, and conclude that our laser-cooling scheme can maintain the temperature of the gas without significant additional losses. Finally we derive an analytic expression for the temperature of a trapped Fermi gas heated by background collisions, that agrees very well with the data obtained from the numerical simulation.

Abstract:We present a magnetically enhanced laser cooling scheme applicable to multi-level type-II transitions and further diatomic molecules with adiabatic transfer. An angled magnetic field is introduced to not only remix the dark states, but also decompose the multi-level system into several two-level sub-systems in time-ordering, hence allowing multiple photon momentum transfer. For complex multi-level diatomic molecules, although the enhancement gets weakened, our simulations still predict a $\sim 4\times$ larger value of the maximum achievable cooling force and a wider coolable velocity range compared to the conventional Doppler cooling. A reduced dependence on spontaneous emission of this scheme makes laser cooling a molecule with leakage channels become a feasibility.

Abstract:Only bosonic molecular species have been directly laser cooled to date, primarily due to an abundance of bosonic isotopes in nature and to their simpler hyperfine structure. Fermionic molecules provide new opportunities for ultracold chemistry, quantum simulation, and precision measurements. Here we report direct laser cooling of a fermionic molecular isotopologue, calcium monodeuteride (CaD). With a nuclear spin I = 1, only 5 hyperfine states need to be addressed for rotational closure in optical cycling. These hyperfine states are unresolved for typical experimental linewidths. We present a method for efficiently producing alkaline-earth metal hydrides and deuterides. We demonstrate rotational closure and show magnetically assisted Sisyphus cooling in one dimension for a beam of CaD molecules. Our results indicate that the experimental complexity for laser cooling CaD is similar to that of calcium monohydride (CaH). Laser cooling of CaD is a promising first step for production of ultracold and trapped atomic deuterium.

Abstract:Different from atoms, molecules have unique properties, and play an important role in the research of atomic, molecular and optical physics. Cold molecules have important applications in science and have been studied for more than 20 years. But traditional methods, such as the Stark decelerator, have hit a bottleneck: it is hard to increase the phase space density of molecules. Extending the direct laser-cooling technique to new molecular species has recently been a hot topic and also a big challenge. In this review paper, on one hand, we make a brief review to recent progresses on the direct laser cooling of polar molecules. On the other hand, a demonstration on the feasibility of laser cooling BaF molecule has been experimentally illustrated, including the analysis on the molecular energy levels, measurements of the high-resolution spectroscopy, efficient pre-cooling and state preparation via buffer-gas cooling and detailed investigations on the molcule-light interactions. All these results not only pave the way for future laser-cooling and -trapping experiments, but also serve as a reference for the laser-cooling explorations on new molecular species.

Abstract:We propose a laser cooling mechanism that leads to a temperature significantly lower than the single-photon recoil limit, about $4\times 10^{-4}\,E_{r}$. This mechanism benefits from sharp and high-contrast spectra which are induced by interacting dark-state resonances. It is theoretically demonstrated that four-level atoms illuminated by two counter-propagating probe beams and two additional beams directed perpendicularly to other two, exhibit new cooling effects; For red detuned probe lasers, atoms can be subject to a strong viscous force with an extremely small diffusion, characteristic of heating caused by the stochastic nature of spontaneous emission processes. By quantum mechanical simulations, we then find that the lowest temperature approaches 0.3 nK for the case of mercury, significantly lower than the recoil energy limit. A further advantage of our proposed scheme is that there is no need for an external magnetic field or a strong external confining potential.

Abstract:We explore, theoretically and experimentally, a method for cooling a broadband heat reservoir, via its laser-assisted collisions with two-level atoms followed by their fluorescence. This method is shown to be advantageous compared to existing laser-cooling methods in terms of its cooling efficiency, the lowest attainable temperature for broadband baths and its versatility: it can cool down any heat reservoir, provided the laser is red-detuned from the atomic resonance. It is applicable to cooling down both dense gaseous and condensed media.

Abstract:We report laser cooling of fermionic K-40 atoms, with temperatures down to (15 +/- 5) microK, for an enriched sample trapped in a MOT and additionaly cooled in optical molasses. This temperature is a factor of 10 below the Doppler-cooling limit and corresponds to an rms velocity within a factor of two of the lowest realizable rms velocity (~3.5v rec) in 3D optical molasses. Realization of such low atom temperatures, up to now only accessible with evaporative cooling techniques, is an important precursor to producing a degenerate Fermi gas of K-40 atoms.

Laser cooling of barium monofluoride molecules using synthesized optical spectra

Abstract:We demonstrate laser cooling of barium monofluoride (138BaF) molecules. We use serrodynes to synthesize time-sequenced optical spectra that can be precisely tailored to the hyperfine structure of this heaviest non-radioactive alkaline earth monofluoride. By optimizing these optical spectra, we realize strong Sisyphus cooling forces that efficiently collimate a molecular beam. Our technique is an important step towards using intense beams of barium monofluoride for precision measurement applications, and will be useful for cooling other molecular species with complex level structure.

Abstract:The general idea that optical radiation may cool matter was put forward by Pringsheim already in 1929. Doppler cooling of dilute atomic gases is an extremely successful application of this concept, and more recently anti-Stokes cooling in multilevel systems has been explored, culminating in the optical refrigeration of solids. Collisional redistribution of radiation is a proposed different cooling mechanism that involves atomic two-level systems, though experimental investigations in gases with moderate density have so far not reached the cooling regime. Here we experimentally demonstrate laser cooling of an atomic gas based on collisional redistribution of radiation, using rubidium atoms subject to 230 bar of argon buffer gas pressure. The frequent collisions in the ultradense gas transiently shift a far red detuned laser beam into resonance, while spontaneous decay occurs close to the unperturbed atomic resonance frequency. During each excitation cycle, a kinetic energy of order of the thermal energy k_B T is extracted from the dense atomic sample. In a proof of principle experiment with a thermally non-isolated sample, we experimentally demonstrate relative cooling by 66 K. The cooled gas has a density of more than 10 orders of magnitude above the typical values in Doppler cooling experiments, and the cooling power reaches 87 mW. Future prospects of the demonstrated effect include studies of supercooling beyond the homogeneous nucleation temperature and optical chillers.

Abstract:We propose to sympathetically slow and cool polar molecules in a cold, low-density beam using laser-cooled Rydberg atoms. The elastic collision cross sections between molecules and Rydberg atoms are large enough to efficiently thermalize the molecules even in a low-density environment. Molecules traveling at 100 m/s can be stopped in under 30 collisions with little inelastic loss. Laser cooling trapped-ion crystal modes beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime

Abstract:Laser cooling methods for trapped ions are most commonly studied at low energies, i.e., in the Lamb-Dicke regime. However, ions in experiments are often excited to higher energies for which the Lamb-Dicke approximation breaks down. Here we construct a non-perturbative, semiclassical method for predicting the energy-dependent cooling dynamics of trapped-ion crystals with potentially many internal levels and motional modes beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime. This method allows accurate and efficient modeling of a variety of interesting phenomena, such as the breakdown of EIT cooling at high energies and the simultaneous cooling of multiple high-temperature modes. We compare its predictions both to fully-quantum simulations and to experimental data for a broadband EIT cooling method on a Raman $S$-$D$ transition in $^{138}$Ba${^+}$. We find the method can accurately predict cooling rates over a wide range of energies relevant to trapped ion experiments. Our method complements fully quantum models by allowing for fast and accurate predictions of laser-cooling dynamics at much higher energy scales.

A general Zeeman slower for type-II transitions and polar molecules

Abstract: We proposed a general Zeeman slower scheme applicable to the majority of the laser-coolable molecules. Different from previous schemes, the key idea of our scheme lies in that the compensation of the detuning with the magnetic field is done for the repumping laser instead of the cooling laser. Only atoms or molecules with the right velocity will be repumped and laser slowed. Such scheme is more feasible for molecules with complex energy sturcutres. We apply this scheme for molecules with large Land\'e g-factor of the excited states and polyatomic molecules, and it shows a better slowing efficiency.
Direct laser cooling to Bose-Einstein condensation in a dipole trap

Abstract:We present a method for producing three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates using only laser cooling. The phase transition to condensation is crossed with $2.5 {\times} 10^{4}$ $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms at a temperature of $T_{\mathrm{c}} = 0.6\ \mu\mathrm{K}$ after 1.4 s of cooling. Atoms are trapped in a crossed optical dipole trap and cooled using Raman cooling with far-off-resonant optical pumping light to reduce atom loss and heating. The achieved temperatures are well below the effective recoil temperature. We find that during the final cooling stage at atomic densities above $10^{14}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, careful tuning of trap depth and optical-pumping rate is necessary to evade heating and loss mechanisms. The method may enable the fast production of quantum degenerate gases in a variety of systems including fermions.

Abstract:We present a microscopic laser model for many atoms coupled to a single cavity mode, including the light forces resulting from atom-field momentum exchange. Within a semiclassical description, we solve the equations for atomic motion and internal dynamics to obtain analytic expressions for the optical potential and friction force seen by each atom. When optical gain is maximum at frequencies where the light field extracts kinetic energy from the atomic motion, the dynamics combines optical lasing and motional cooling. From the corresponding momentum diffusion coefficient we predict sub-Doppler temperatures in the stationary state. This generalizes the theory of cavity enhanced laser cooling to active cavity systems. We identify the gain induced reduction of the effective resonator linewidth as key origin for the faster cooling and lower temperatures, which implys that a bad cavity with a gain medium can replace a high-Q cavity. In addition, this shows the importance of light forces for gas lasers in the low-temperature limit, where atoms can arrange in a periodic pattern maximizing gain and counteracting spatial hole burning. Ultimately, in the low temperature limit, such a setup should allow to combine optical lasing and atom lasing in single device.

Abstract:We extend the theory for laser cooling in a near-resonant optical lattice to include multiple excited hyperfine states. Simulations are performed treating the external degrees of freedom of the atom, i.e., position and momentum, classically, while the internal atomic states are treated quantum mechanically, allowing for arbitrary superpositions. Whereas theoretical treatments including only a single excited hyperfine state predict that the temperature should be a function of lattice depth only, except close to resonance, experiments have shown that the minimum temperature achieved depends also on the detuning from resonance of the lattice light. Our results resolve this discrepancy.

Abstract:Ultracold polar molecules are promising for quantum information processing and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. Laser cooling to ultracold temperatures is an established technique for trapped diatomic and triatomic molecules. Further cooling of the molecules to near the motional ground state is crucial for reducing various dephasings in quantum and precision applications. In this work, we demonstrate Raman sideband cooling of CaF molecules in optical tweezers to near their motional ground state, with average motional occupation quantum numbers of $\bar{n}_{x}=0.16(12)$, $\bar{n}_{y}=0.17(17)$ (radial directions), $\bar{n}_{z}=0.22(16)$ (axial direction) and a 3-D motional ground state probability of $54\pm18\%$. This paves the way to increase molecular coherence times in optical tweezers for robust quantum computation and simulation applications.
