Abstract:Affection plays a crucial role in romantic relationships, as individuals exchange affection with each other to build and maintain relationships. This study applied affection exchange theory (AET) to examine affection exchange patterns within marital dyads, employing couple‐centered approaches. The aim was to identify different types of couple affection exchange profiles based on both partners' affection given and received. The sample consisted of 668 Chinese heterosexual couples. Additionally, this study explored the association between couple affection exchange profiles and marital quality. Through latent profile analysis, three distinct profiles were identified: reserved (47.1%), invisible (10.5%), and highly affectionate (42.4%). Further between‐profile comparisons regarding marital quality indicated that couples in the highly affectionate profile report the most satisfying marriages, whereas the invisible profile represents the least desirable outcome. The findings highlight the diverse nature of couple affection exchange and offer valuable insights for couple therapy interventions focused on affection.

Team–Member Exchange and Work Engagement: Does Personality Make a Difference?

Abstract:Purpose Adopting a person–situation interactionist framework, this study examined the joint effects of employee personality (i.e., extraversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness) and social exchange relationships with peers (i.e., team–member exchange; TMX) in predicting work engagement. Methodology This study is based on survey responses from 235 Chinese employees collected at two time points with 3 months in between. We conducted moderated regression analyses to test the hypotheses that employees higher in extraversion or conscientiousness or lower in neuroticism would demonstrate a stronger TMX–work engagement relation. Findings Results from this study showed that the three focal personality traits moderated the TMX–engagement relation simultaneously. Specifically, the positive TMX–engagement relation was stronger for employees with higher extraversion or lower neuroticism than that for their counterparts. Interestingly, the TMX–engagement relation was positive for employees lower in conscientiousness but negative for those higher in conscientiousness. Implications These findings support the notion that lateral social exchange relationships in the workplace (i.e., TMX) are an important antecedent of work engagement and, more importantly, their beneficial effects on work engagement are contingent on certain types and/or levels of personality traits. Originality/Value This study not only advances our understanding of presumed antecedents of work engagement but also opens a new door for future research on work engagement by highlighting the importance of a person–situation interactionist framework.

Abstract:Using a sample of over 300 employees from mainland China,the present study investigated the relationship among 2 social exchanges in organizations-perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange,psychological capital and work engagement,especially the mediating role of psychological capital.The results indicated that both perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange had positive effects of prediction on psychological capital and wok engagement;and psychological capital had a positive effect of prediction on work engagement.Further study showed that psychological capital mediated the relationship between social exchanges in organizations and work engagement.

Abstract:Instrumentality—the extent to which one facilitates another person’s goal progress—has been described as the Rosetta Stone of attraction, and promotes closeness in ongoing relationships. Yet prior work has not examined whether people might regulate their instrumentality in contexts in which they desire (vs. do not desire) attraction or closeness with others. Four studies, employing imagined online scenario and in-lab experimental paradigms, examined whether people strive to be more instrumental to potential romantic partners (targets) under conditions that lead them to be more (vs. less) romantically interested in those targets. Single participants were more romantically interested in romantically available versus unavailable targets, which in turn, was associated with greater willingness to be instrumental. Results for romantically involved participants were less consistent. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Abstract:Understanding personality effects and their role in influencing relationship quality, varied according to gender and relationship duration, could help us better understand close relationships. Participants were Chinese dating dyads and were asked to complete both the Big Five Inventory and Perceived Relationship Quality Component scales. Males and those who had a long-term relationship perceived better relationship quality; individuals who scored higher on agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and emotional stability enjoyed better relationship quality; gender and/or relationship duration moderated the actor effect of extraversion and the partner effects of conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness on relationship quality. Regarding the profile similarity, those couples who were more dissimilar in their profile personality had better relationship quality, especially when they were in a relatively long-term relationship. Meanwhile, with an increase in profile similarity, the males' perceived relationship quality decreased.

Abstract:I explored the psychological mechanism underlying the exchanging of sex for tangible benefits such as drugs, money, and career opportunities, that is, transactional sex. I conducted an experiment with 58 undergraduate students at a university in China. I found that objectification (i.e., viewing human beings and objects as alike) moderated the effect of materialism on their attitudes toward transactional sex. When primed with materialistic images, individuals who saw a larger overlap between the attributes of human beings and objects, and those who perceived themselves as more object-like, felt more positive toward transactional sex than did those less prone to objectify the self and others. This study contributes to understanding of transactional sex, which temporarily satisfies individuals' material needs yet may have disastrous consequences in multiple life domains. Therefore, in addition to advancing knowledge about materialism and objectification, an understanding of the psychological mechanism underlying transactional sex may potentially contribute to the well-being of those who are most likely to participate in transactional sex.

Abstract:Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Ahead of Print. Insecure attachment styles, widely recognized as negative predictors in most Western samples, have been found to impair marital satisfaction for individuals high in attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. However, Chinese culture is more tolerant of some features of attachment avoidance, which may lead to different implications of attachment styles for marital relationships. Besides, considering that responses of the partner play a vital role in the interaction of intimate relationships, the current study examined how attachment styles affect marital satisfaction through perceived partner responsiveness (PPR). This study is based on dyadic data from 668 Chinese couples across six marital stages, whose average length of marriage was 15.22 years (ranging from 0.03 to 67.57 years, SD = 13.88). Using the actor-partner interdependence model (APIMeM) to analyze these data, results suggested that: (a) individuals' attachment anxiety was negatively associated with marital satisfaction for both themselves and their partner, and these associations were partially mediated by PPR; (b) PPR was a full mediator of the positive association between individuals' attachment avoidance and their own marital satisfaction; (c) wives' PPR fully mediated the positive association between their attachment avoidance and their partner's marital satisfaction, whereas husbands' PPR partially mediated the positive association between their attachment avoidance and their partner's marital satisfaction. These findings differ from previous studies based on Western samples and advance our understanding of how attachment styles are related to PPR and marital satisfaction in Chinese context, providing practical guidance on marital interactions for people with insecure attachment styles.

Abstract:Status exchange in marriage refers to a marriage pattern in which one spouse compensates for his or her disadvantage in one status area relative to the other spouse with an advantage in another. Two prominent examples of marriage exchange discussed in the existing literature are race–status exchange and beauty–status exchange. Although the marriage exchange theory is well supported by early studies, in recent years, its applicability has been questioned by some scholars. Protracted debates on the topic in question were launched in two top sociological journals, the American Sociological Review and the American Journal of Sociology. This study reviews these debates and offers an in-depth theoretical investigation into the relationship between matching and exchange, and the premise of marriage exchange theory. In addition, we collect and analyze the data from the five waves of the China Family Panel Studies (2010–2018) on beauty–status exchanges and other forms of marriage exchanges in China. We found little evidence of beauty–status exchanges in Chinese marriages and even the well-assumed exchange of “woman's beauty for man's talent” lacks sound empirical support. However, there are ample evidences of exchanges among the four status factors of education, occupation, income, and family background. As indicators of socioeconomic status, these four variables are homogeneous in nature, and therefore can more easily substitute for one another. We argue that the validity of marriage exchange theory depends on the similarity or substitutability between the elements in exchange. Thus, we can neither completely accept nor reject the marriage exchange theory.

Abstract:People have an innate motivation to establish and maintain romantic relationships with others, and consumption is often utilized to construct personal image. In the current research, we explore the effect of romantic alternatives on nonsingles' experiential and material purchases. Across six studies, the results reveal that romantic alternative triggers self-enhancement in nonsingles, which in turn affects experiential versus material purchases. Specifically, men have a stronger preference for experiential purchases, while women prefer material purchases when encountering the desire for others. The studies also test the function of experiential versus material purchases in signaling desirable partner images as part of self-enhancement and address the alternative explanation of relationship seeking. The findings recognize a subtle tactic that is resorted to cope with alternatives by consumption to achieve self-enhancement, which contributes to the literature on relationship maintenance. Furthermore, this research sheds light on purchase signals of experimental and material consumption in romantic relationship context, providing practical suggestions for marketing.

Abstract:Marital commitment and satisfaction are known to be closely related, but only limited research has examined the asymmetric interaction patterns between spouses. In this paper, the authors study 400 Chinese couples and find that communication mediates the relationship between marital commitment and marital satisfaction. Using the actor-partner interdependence model, they find that wives and husbands show asymmetric associations for marital commitment, communication and satisfaction. Specifically, compared with husbands, wives are more attuned to the path from marital commitment to marital satisfaction via communication. Implications and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:Objective To explore relationship between attachment style and dyadic heterosexual interaction behavior among junior high school students.230 students from grade 2 and 3 in two junior high schools.MethodsRelationship Questionnaire(RQ) and Experiences of Close Relationship Inventory(ECR) were used for measuring attachment style.Dyadic Heterosexual Interaction Behavior Inventory,which developed by ourselves,was used to measure dyadic interaction.ResultsThey are two factors on dyadic heterosexual interaction behavior: flaunting and attraction,intimacy and exclusion.The inventory has good reliability and validity.There are significant positive correlation between attachment anxiety and dyadic heterosexual interaction,but no significant correlations were found between attachment avoidant and dyadic heterosexual interaction.ConclusionThe junior high school students who have high attachment anxiety tend to have obvious dyadic heterosexual interaction.

Abstract:In an effort to understand behavior and attributions of conflict among partners of intimate relationships, the authors have studied questionnaires from 84 dating pairs and 80 married couples who were asked about their relationship quality, responsive behavior, and attributions of their conflicts. The result shows that gender difference plays a significant role in responsive behavior among partners in conflict, and the responsive behavior and attributions of conflict are more diversified between married couples than that between dating partners. The research is important in any effort for people to avoid conflict.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the correlations among personal traits, marital interaction and marital satisfaction.Methods: NEO-FFI, Coping style scale, MLOC, Marital Commitment Scale, Interpersonal Problem Solving Inventory and Locke-Wallace marital adjustment Test were used among 370 Chinese newlyweds.Results: The cross section survey showed that, the neuroticism, external locus of control of marriage, was significantly negatively correlated with marital satisfaction; the openness, internal locus of control, positive coping, marital commitment, Interpersonal Problem Solving, is significantly positively correlated with marital satisfaction; commitment, interpersonal problem solving and openness could predict the marital satisfaction.Conclusion: Enhancing the level of marital commitment, changing the negative attributions into positive, solving problems positively by using dyadic adjustment and constructive communication would be helpful to marital success.

Attachment theory postulates that three behavioral systems are central to optimal couple functioning: attachment, caregiving, and sex. However, few studies have examined the concurrent contribution of these systems to understand sexual well-being. This daily diary study examined the intermediary role of attachment- and caregiving-related sexual motives in the associations linking attachment insecurities and positive and negative emotions during sexual activity in 149 long-term mixed-gender/sex couples. Multilevel analyses revealed that individuals higher in attachment avoidance endorsed less caregiving sexual motives, which was associated with their own more negative emotional experience during sexual activity. Individuals higher in attachment anxiety endorsed more attachment sexual motives, which was associated with their own and their partner's more negative emotional experience during sex. However, individuals higher in attachment anxiety also concurrently endorsed more caregiving sexual motives, which predicted their own and their partner's more positive emotional experience during sex. Overall, the findings support the associations between the attachment, caregiving, and sexual behavioral systems and suggest that engaging in sex as a way to care for one's partner might foster sexual well-being in long-term couples.

Abstract:As a Chinese popular saying goes, "Money turns a good man into a bad man". Is this saying reflecting the truth or not? This research would discuss this phenomenon from the evolutionary perspective. "Good Resource" has been regarded as one of the most important aspects that males self-evaluate in the mating process. However, little has been known regarding whether and why male mating strategy would vary under different levels of resource availability. According to Life History Theory, the development of humans' sexual strategy is based on childhood experiences, which would be influenced by current environmental conditions as well. According to previous research, two studies explored how resource-acquiring cues and childhood experiences (including childhood economic condition and parent-child relationship) would influence unmarried males' unrestricted sociosexual attitudes. Study 1 adopted the imaginary method, recruited 62 college students (M = 19.53 years, SD = 2.78) in a psychology class at Fudan University. Participants were randomly divided into two groups and filled their demographic information including childhood economic background and parent-child relationships, followed by the task of writing an article. The article was based on the imagination of living either a wealthy life or an underprivileged life. Participants completed the questionnaire adapted from the SOI-STMO (Sociosexual Orientation Inventory - Short-term Mating Orientation Scale; Jackson & Kirkpatrick, 2007) after writing the article. The results showed that parent-child relationship during early childhood was a moderator in the association between the quality of resource and their sexual attitudes. However, the moderating effect of childhood economic background was not found to be statistically significant. Study 2 utilized Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structures questionnaire (ECR-RS) to explore the moderating effect of attachment styles on the association between the quality of resource and participants' sexual attitudes. Participants were randomly divided into two groups and filled out their demographic information including childhood economic background and the ECR-RS. Participants were presented with three pictures that showed either "good" or "bad" resource, wrote an article regarding the experience, and completed the questionnaire adapted from the Brief Sexual Attitudes Scale (Hendrick, Hendrick, & Reich, 2006). Participants' photos of their own face were integrated in those pictures to increase a sense of authenticity. According to the results, avoidantly-attached behaviors in the early childhood had the most significant moderating effect on the relationship between resource-acquiring capability and participants' sexual attitudes. To be specific, highly avoidant participants were more likely to have more open sexual attitudes if they had "good resource." Those on the lower end of avoidance tended to show a significant lower level of unrestricted sexual attitudes under the situation of "good resource" (vs "bad resource"). Given these two studies, the previous statement of " Money turns a good man into a bad man" seemed to be true only for those who showed an avoidant attachment style to their parents at the young age. The current study aimed to enrich the Life History Theory literature and provide useful implication and direction for future studies.

Abstract:This paper aims to explore the importance of intimacy and trust in interpersonal relationships from a sociological perspective. Firstly, the concept of intimacy and trust is defined and analyzed, revealing their crucial roles in interactions between individuals and within society. Intimacy, characterized by emotional closeness and support, has been shown to enhance the stability and quality of relationships, while trust serves as a fundamental element in maintaining and strengthening interpersonal bonds. Drawing on empirical research and theoretical perspectives from social psychology, this paper delves into how intimacy facilitates mechanisms of trust and how trust, in turn, promotes the maintenance and development of intimacy in relationships. Additionally, the interplay between intimacy and trust, as well as the influences of various factors including individual characteristics, relational dynamics, and environmental contexts, are examined. The practical significance and future directions of fostering intimacy and trust in everyday life, organizational settings, and governmental institutions are discussed to promote the healthy development of interpersonal relationships.
Attachment Orientation and Preferences for Partners' Emotional Responses in Stressful and Positive Situations

Abstract:Attachment theory proposes that close relationships help us to regulate our emotions in stressful and positive situations. However, no previous studies have examined preferences for a partner's emotional response to one's own stressful and positive situations or tested whether these preferences differ based on attachment orientation. This study examines the association of attachment orientation and preferences for partners' emotional responses relative to one's own emotional responses in stressful and positive contexts among 425 United States adults who were currently in a committed relationship of ≥6 months. Data were collected in 2020. Overall, participants preferred their partners to feel and express less distress, less worry, more calm, and more hope than themselves during stressful situations and for their partners to feel and express more excitement, pride, and hope than themselves during positive situations. Higher attachment anxiety predicted preferences for partners to feel and express more distress/worry in stressful situations, whereas higher attachment avoidance predicted preferences for partners to feel and express less hope in stressful situations. Statistical interactions of attachment anxiety × attachment avoidance indicated that the combination of low attachment anxiety and high attachment avoidance (dismissing avoidance) was associated with preferences for partners to feel and express less positive emotions in positive situations, whereas the combination of high attachment anxiety and high attachment avoidance (fearful avoidance) was associated with preferences for partners to feel and express more negative emotions in stressful situations and less positive emotions in positive situations. This investigation provides novel evidence for links between attachment orientation and preferences for partners' emotional responses in two theoretically important contexts, which has implications for the nature and function of emotion regulation in close relationships. Future research is needed to determine the generalizability of these findings to more collectivist cultural contexts.
