Abstract:Let M be a symplectic manifold, equipped with a semi-free symplectic circle action with a finite, non-empty fixed point set. We show that the circle action must be Hamiltonian, and M must have the equivariant cohomology and Chern classes of (P1)n.

Abstract:In [20] the author classified complete intersections of dimension $8k$ admitting a Hamiltonian circle action, under a certain assumption on the fixed point set. In this paper, we improve this result in two directions. Firstly, in dimension $8$ we remove the assumption on the fixed point set. Secondly, in any dimension we prove the result under an analogous assumption on the fixed point set. We also give some applications of our methods to the unimodality of Betti numbers of symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action, and discuss the relation to symplectic rationality problems.

Abstract:Consider a compact symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with a Hamiltionan circle action. Then there are at least $n+1$ fixed points. Motivated by recent works on the case that the fixed point set consists of precisely $n+1$ isolated points, this paper studies a Hamiltonian $S^1$ action on a $10$-dimensional compact symplectic manifold with exactly 6 isolated fixed points. We study the relations of the following data: the first Chern class of the manifold,the largest weight of the action, all the weights of the action, the total Chern class of the manifold, and the integral cohomology ring of the manifold. We show the similarities of these data with those of a coadjoint orbit of the exceptional Lie group $G_2$, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a subcircle of the maximal torus.

Abstract:This paper studies symplectic manifolds that admit semi-free circle actions with isolated fixed points. We prove, using results on the Seidel element due to McDuff and Tolman, that the (small) quantum cohomology of a $2n$ dimensional manifold of this type is isomorphic to the (small) quantum cohomology of a product of $n$ copies of $\bb{P}^1$. This generalizes a result due to Tolman and Witsman.

Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we consider symplectic 4-manifolds $(M,\omega)$ with $c_1(M,\omega)=0$ which admit a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action together with an equivariant Maslov condition on orbits of the group action. We call such spaces {\em special Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces}. It turns out that there are no compact special Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces. We classify all exact special Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces and show that all of them admit the structure of a Stein surface.

Abstract:We prove new cases of the Hilbert-Smith conjecture for actions by natural homeomorphisms in symplectic topology. Specifically, we prove that the group of $p$-adic integers $\mathbb Z_p$ does not admit non-trivial continuous actions by Hamiltonian homeomorphisms, the $C^0$ limits of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, on symplectically aspherical symplectic manifolds. For a class of symplectic manifolds, including all standard symplectic tori, we deduce that a locally compact group acting faithfully by homeomorphisms in the $C^0$ closure of time-one maps of symplectic isotopies must be a Lie group. Our methods of proof differ from prior approaches to the question and involve barcodes and power operations in Floer cohomology. They also apply to other natural metrics in symplectic topology, notably Hofer's metric. An appendix by Leonid Polterovich uses this to deduce obstructions on Hamiltonian actions by semi-simple $p$-adic analytic groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify Hamiltonian $S^1$-actions on compact, four dimensional symplectic orbifolds that have isolated singular points with cyclic orbifold structure groups, thus extending the classification due to Karshon to the orbifold setting. To such a space, we associated a combinatorial invariant, a labeled multigraph, that determines the isomorphism type of the space. Moreover, we show that any such space can be obtained by applying finitely many equivariant weighted blow-ups to a minimal space, i.e., one on which no equivariant weighted blow-down can be applied.

Abstract:For a circle action on a compact almost complex manifold with a fixed point, the lower bound on the number of fixed points is known in dimension up to 12 except 10. In this paper, we show that if the circle group acts on a 10-dimensional compact almost complex manifold with a fixed point, then there are at least 6 fixed points. This minimum is attained by $\mathbb{CP}^5$ and $S^6 \times \mathbb{CP}^2$. We establish this lower bound by showing that there does not exist a circle action on a 10-dimensional compact almost complex manifold with 4 fixed points.

On a symplectic generalization of a Hirzebruch problem

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

Abstract:Let the circle group act on a 6-dimensional compact oriented manifold $M$ with isolated fixed points. The fixed point data of $M$ is the collection of signs and weights at the fixed points. To classify such a manifold $M$, the fixed point data is an essential information. Under an assumption that each isotropy submanifold is orientable, we classify the fixed point data of $M$, by showing that we can convert it to the empty collection by performing a combination of a number of types of operations. We do so by proving that we can successively take equivariant connected sums of $M$ at fixed points with $S^6$, $\mathbb{CP}^3$, and 6-dimensional analogue $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ of the Hirzebruch surfaces (and these with opposite orientations), to a fixed point free action on a compact oriented 6-manifold.

Abstract:We construct on $\R^{2d}$, for any $d \geq 3$, smooth Hamiltonians having an elliptic equilibrium with an arbitrary frequency, that is not accumulated by a positive measure set of invariant tori. For $d\geq 4$, the Hamiltonians we construct have not any invariant torus of dimension $d$. Our examples are obtained by a version of the successive conjugation scheme {\it à la} Anosov-Katok.

Abstract:We study the extension of homologically trivial symplectic or Hamiltonian cyclic actions to Hamiltonian circle actions on irrational ruled symplectic $4$-manifolds. On one hand, we construct symplectic involutions on minimal irrational ruled $4$-manifolds that cannot extend to a symplectic circle action even with a possibly different symplectic form. Higher dimensional examples are also constructed. On the other hand, for homologically trivial symplectic cyclic actions of any other order, we show that such an extension always exists. We also classify finite groups of symplecticmorphisms that acts trivially on the first homology group, and prove the non-extendability of the Klein $4$-group action to the three dimensional rotation group action motivated by the classification of finite groups of symplectomorphisms.

Abstract:In the present paper, we consider an action of the circle group on a compact oriented 4-manifold. We derive the Atiyah-Hirzebruch formula for the manifold, and associate a graph in terms of data on the fixed point set. We show in the case of isolated fixed points that if an abstract graph satisfies the Atiyah-Hirzebruch formula, then there exists a corresponding 4-dimensional oriented $S^1$-manifold.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a smooth $4k$-dimensional orientable closed manifold, and assume that $M$ has at most two non-zero Pontrjagin numbers which are associated to the top dimensional Pontrjagin class and the square of the middle dimensional Pontrjagin class. We prove that the signature of $M$ being equal to $1$ and the $\hat{A}$-genus of $M$ vanishing cannot hold at the same time except $\dim M=8, 16$. As an application, we claim that the dimensions of oriented $S^1$-manifolds with exactly three fixed points are only $4, 8$ and $16$, and the rational projective plane whose dimension is greater than $16$ has no smooth non-trivial $S^1$-action.

Abstract:Let the circle group act on a compact oriented manifold $M$ with a non-empty discrete fixed point set. Then the dimension of $M$ is even. If $M$ has one fixed point, $M$ is the point. In any even dimension, such a manifold $M$ with two fixed points exists, a rotation of an even dimensional sphere. Suppose that $M$ has three fixed points. Then the dimension of $M$ is a multiple of 4. Under the assumption that each isotropy submanifold is orientable, we show that if $\dim M=8$, then the weights at the fixed points agree with those of an action on the quaternionic projective space $\mathbb{HP}^2$, and show that there is no such 12-dimensional manifold $M$.

Abstract:In this paper, we first explore holomorphic Hamiltonian systems. In particular, we define action functionals for those systems and show that holomorphic trajectories obey an action principle, i.e., that they can be understood - in some sense - as critical points of these action functionals. As an application, we use holomorphic Hamiltonian systems to establish a relation between Lefschetz fibrations and almost toric fibrations. During the investigation of action functionals for holomorphic Hamiltonian systems, we observe that the complex structure $J$ corresponding to a holomorphic Hamiltonian system poses strong restrictions on the existence of certain trajectories. For instance, no non-trivial holomorphic trajectories with complex tori as domains can exist in $\mathbb{C}^{2n}$ due to the maximum principle. To lift this restriction, we generalize the notion of holomorphic Hamiltonian systems to systems with non-integrable almost complex structures $J$ leading us to the definition of pseudo-holomorphic Hamiltonian systems. We show that these systems exhibit properties very similar to their holomorphic counterparts, notably, that they are also subject to an action principle. Furthermore, we prove that the integrability of $J$ is equivalent to the closedness of the "pseudo-holomorphic symplectic" form. Lastly, we show that, aside from dimension four, the set of proper pseudo-holomorphic Hamiltonian systems is open and dense in the set of pseudo-holomorphic Hamiltonian systems by considering deformations of holomorphic Hamiltonian systems. This implies that proper pseudo-holomorphic Hamiltonian systems are generic.
