Abstract:Oxidative metabolism declines with aging in humans leading to multiple metabolic ailments and subsequent inflammation. In mice, there is evidence of age-related suppression of fatty acid oxidation and oxidative phosphorylation in the liver, heart, and muscles. Many interventions that extend healthy lifespan of mice have been developed, including genetic, pharmacological, and dietary interventions. In this article, we review the literature on oxidative metabolism changes in response to those interventions. We also discuss the molecular pathways that mediate those changes, and their potential as targets for future longevity interventions.
