Abstract:Wavelength conversion and signal regeneration are realized simultaneously by employing a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The experiments demonstrate that the NOLM has strong regenerative capability when it is used as wavelength conversion media. Proper choice of the initial state of the polarization controller in the NOLM can enhance the extinction ratio of the converted signal.

Abstract:The fiber loop mirror is an ideal device for investigating nonlinear switching by using the ultrafast Kerr nonlinearity of optical fibers, and a number of examples of its use have been published. These include pulse switching,1 soliton switching,2 and two-wavelength switching.3 The nonlinear phase shift depends on the product of the signal intensity and the fiber loop length; thus, to reduce switching intensities, we use long loops (~100 m). To improve the long-term stability of these devices, polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) is used. Because the group and phase velocities are considerably different for the orthogonal polarization states of a PMF, in all the previous examples we ensured that the clockwise and anticlockwise signals traveled in the same polarization state within the fiber.

Abstract:We discuss a novel broadband, polarization-insensitive, and wavelength-shift-free optical phase conjugator (OPC). In the OPC scheme, the original input signal is inherently suppressed in a polarization-diversity loop setup. This allows for spectrally efficient, wavelength-(band)-shift-free generation of phase-conjugated idlers over a continuous operating band. The idlers are generated using four-wave mixing in nonlinear fibers using out-of-band, orthogonally polarized pump waves. The saturation characteristics of the exploited nonlinear mixing process as well as the crosstalk characteristics of the OPC diversity loop scheme are investigated. The OPC subsystem is finally utilized for fiber nonlinearity mitigation by midlink spectral inversion in 800-km transmission experiments over dispersion-managed fiber spans with lumped amplification by Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. Q2-factor improvements of up to 0.7dB are obtained in transmission of a 300-GHz wide 1.6Tb/s super channel consisting of eight 200Gb/s polarization division multiplexed 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation subchannels.

Abstract:Rewinding the arrow of time via phase conjugation is an intriguing phenomenon made possible by the wave property of light. Here, we demonstrate the realization of a one-wave optical phase conjugation mirror using a spatial light modulator. An adaptable single-mode filter is created, and a phase-conjugate beam is then prepared by reverse propagation through this filter. Our method is simple, alignment free, and fast while allowing high power throughput in the time-reversed wave, which has not been simultaneously demonstrated before. Using our method, we demonstrate high throughput full-field light delivery through highly scattering biological tissue and multimode fibers, even for quantum dot fluorescence.

Abstract:We propose a novel phase-preserving multilevel amplitude regenerator scheme by cascading two nonlinear-optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) with an intermediate optical phase conjugator (OPC) stage. Joint parameter optimization of the two NOLM units has been carried out to cancel the introduced phase distortion and enable a more power-efficient performance. Moreover, our scheme combines the operation of the NOLM and the OPC in a single subsystem, enabling the compensation of both amplitude and phase distortions when located symmetrically in a transmission link. To this end, extensive numerical simulations have been performed to evaluate the regeneration performance in a transmission link dominated by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and Kerr-induced nonlinear distortions (self-phase modulation-induced phase distortion), achieving over 100% reach extension compared to the cases of un-regenerative, or a mid-span OPC-based transmission links.
The Effect of Optical Phase Conjugation on Inter- and Intra-Channel Nonlinearities in Ultrahigh-Speed Transmission Systems

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength conversion was simultaneously achieved by using nonlinear optical loop mirror. The maximum separation of the wavelength conversion between the control laser and signal laser is larger than 25 nm. The gain-switched distributed feed-back laser-diode is used as the control light with a pulse width of 20 ps, and the spectrum-sliced fiber amplifier light source is used for the signal lasers with multi-wavelength output. The performance of the converted signal with different wavelength depends on the control optical power or the direction of the polarization controller in the mirror.

Abstract:We present experimental demonstration of phase conjugation using nonlinear metamaterial elements. Active split-ring resonators loaded with varactor diodes are demonstrated theoretically to act as phase-conjugating or time-reversing discrete elements when parametrically pumped and illuminated with appropriate frequencies. The metamaterial elements were fabricated and shown experimentally to produce a time reversed signal. Measurements confirm that a discrete array of phase-conjugating elements act as a negatively-refracting time reversal RF lens only 0.12$\lambda$ thick.

Abstract:We discuss recent progress on the use of optical and digital phase conjugation techniques for nonlinearity compensation in optical fiber links. We compare the achievable performance gain of phase conjugated twin wave applied in two polarization states and time segments with mid-link optical phase conjugation and digital back propagation. For multicarrier transmission scheme such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, two recently proposed schemes, namely phase-conjugated pilots and phase-conjugated subcarrier coding are reviewed.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion has been achieved to generate a multichannel return-to-zero optical source for wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) systems by using a nonlinear optical loop mirror consisting of a common dispersion-shifted fiber. After WDM transmission over 40-km SMF, the WDM signals are successfully regenerated by a novel regenerator including reshaping and reamplification based on a dispersion-imbalanced loop mirror consisting of an SMF and a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber.

Abstract:We have realized the nonlinear sign shift operation for photonic qubits. This operation shifts the phase of two photons reflected by a beam splitter using an extra single photon and measurement. We show that the conditional phase shift is (1.05+/-0.06)pi in clear agreement with theory. Our results show that, by using an ancilla photon and conditional detection, nonlinear optical effects can be implemented using only linear optical elements. This experiment represents an essential step for linear optical implementations of scalable quantum computation.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength interchange for differential phase-shift-keying signal is proposed and demonstrated using an optical parametric loop mirror with a phase-controlled optical pump. The performance of wavelength interchange is experimentally evaluated at 10 Gb/s. Successful swapping of phase information is achieved with error-free performance for 231-1 pseudorandom binary sequence encoded signals.

Abstract:We combine lossless, phase-only transformations with fully-transmitting linear-optical scatterers to define the principle of linear-optical phase amplification. This enables a physical phase shift $\phi$ to be nonlinearly mapped to a new space $\gamma(\phi)$ using linear optics, resulting in a completely general and enhanced phase shifter that can replace any standard one. A particular phase amplifier is experimentally realized, allowing the phase enhancement parameter $d\gamma/d\phi$ to be continuously tuned. Placing this enhanced phase shifter in one arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer led to an intensity-phase slope more than twenty times steeper than what can be obtained with its unamplified counterpart.
