Abstract:Western drama indirectly introduced to Shanghai through Japan in 1907 has been acknowledged.However,drama introduced to Nankai directly from European countries in 1909 has not been paid much attention to,because it was considered to be not so advanced.Cao Yu who wrote several masterpieces under the influence of "pure artistic research" advocated by Peng Chun,was later unfortunately guided towards a wrong direction impacted by "advanced drama conception".That was just the destiny of Cao Yu and Chinese drama in 20th century.

An Analysis of Cao Yus Creative Conception of Female Images Transformation in His Plays

Abstract:As the Pioneer of Chinese Drama, Cao Yu has contributed a series of distinctive and representative female images to contemporary Chinese literature. However, it exists a great transformation in female image creation and aesthetics in his plays. Divided from 1938, modern women represented by Fanyi, Chen Bailu and Hua Jinzi full of passion for life were celebrated by Cao Yu during the pre-time, while traditional women with classic Chinese flavors got well recognized by him during the post-time, such as Doctor Ding, Sufang and Ruijue. The transformation related closely to his creative conception, reflecting Cao Yus re-choice of his aesthetic interests, values, and cultural stance. This article analyzed Cao Yus creative conception from the differences between his two periods of female image creation and aesthetics before and after 1938. In recent years, feminism has been on the rise in China. Therefore, it will not only be beneficial to the Chinese womens liberation movement, but also to the worlds womens liberation movement.

Abstract:The article is dedicated to the creative path of the outstanding Chinese tenor of our time Dai Yuqiang. Attention is focused on the key events of his life that influenced his development as a vocalist. The article covers the versatile activity of Dai Yuqiang as an opera singer, the main phase of which falls on the late 1990s – 2010s, and as a concert performer, teacher and music educator. It reveals the features of his performing repertoire (from Chinese folk songs to Italian verismo operas) and highlights the geography of his performances (from China to the USA). Dai Yuqiang is a singer known outside of China, who is internationally recognised for his exceptional voice and artistry. The name of Dai Yuqiang is inscribed in the world vocal art, he is the first and only student of the great Luciano Pavarotti. In the field of Chinese vocal education today, Dai Yuqiang is one of the leading teachers, engaged in the education of professional vocalists. An important part of his pedagogy is the popularisation of vocal literacy among a wide audience. The information from Dai Yuqiang’s biography is reinforced by excerpts from two published interviews, which allows us to make his artistic portrait more expressive, voluminous, and multifaceted.

Abstract:Wu Mei's teaching drama at Peking University is a landmark event in the history of 20th century Chinese opera studies and modern Chinese academic and cultural history.It marks as the drama studies has been recognized by society and protected by the academic system.The new era has provided Wu Mei a good opportunity to create history,and Wu Mei also has increased the brilliance for this period of time.The two develops a healthy interactive relationship.The life in Peking University for 5 yeas has a great impact on Wu Mei's life and academic career,which has completed the change from traditional writer to a modern scholar,even though this change is not complete.Through comparison with another scholar Wang-GuoWei,Wu Mei's achievement and the characteristics in drama studies can be seen more clearly.Both of them are masters and it is difficult to judge who is better than the other.We cannot judge their fit and unfit quality simply.

Abstract:Mao Qiling is in the period of transition from late Ming Dynasty to early Qing Dynasty.His drama thought showed some character of Ming opera drama view which highly thought affection,as well as reflected the late Ming scribes' romantic self-admiring attitude.At the same time,his drama views reflected the Qing Dynasty drama view which highly stressed the importance of ethical education,and attached importance to drama because it made benefit to the world of traditional Confucianism.Meanwhile he highly confirmed that the Yuan drama was one generation's article,which was the harbinger of Jiao Xun opera view about each generation has its' wins and Wang Guowei's view about each generation has its own literature.Accordingly,his views on drama,on literature and academic have some isomorphism;each of them was both of the succession of the thought of Ming Dynasty and the pioneer of the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:One of the major legacies of the May Fourth Movement (1919) is the literature produced at the time, and within that canon the emergence of huaju (spoken drama) occupies an important position. As China's most prominent playwright of the twentieth century, Cao Yu published important plays, most notably Thunderstorm, Sunrise, and Peking Man, which feature some of spoken drama's most successful female characters. In light of the theory of literary event, this article intends to analyze those female protagonists with reference to Nora's departure, and to explore the power of social criticism embodied in their struggles to win freedom and independence. As young female intellectuals, these women undergo difficult experiences and end up with different endings. Reconsidered as pieces of political commentary, Cao Yu's plays reflect the legacy of the May Fourth Movement, that is, the idea that literature is an event that has power to act and intervene into reality.

Abstract:The founding of the People’s Republic of China in the 20th century, the advent of changes in Chinese society lead to the emergence of new artistic requirements for Chinese dramatic art, and especially for the Peking Opera. Style changes have been brewing in the theater since the late Qing era, but they were fi nally thought out and fi xed in it by the personal talent of its representatives, such as Mei Lanfang, Cheng Yanqiu, Zhou Xinfang, Qi Zhushang and others. Their work had a signifi cant impact on the style of the Peking Opera and contributed to new fl owering of Chinese theatrical art. The article discusses the ways of its renewal; the most radical one subsequently led to the emergence of the so-called “exemplary performances”.

Abstract:Although the creation of Chinese modern drama in the new era started just 20 years ago, it goes further than what happened 70 years ago in cultural modernization. It is because before 1980s Chinese modern drama didn't always go towards modernization, but went back to a situation before the May 4th Movement under a push of extreme political culture.
