Abstract:<p>Nitrogen doped carbon is a promising candidate for noble Pt and IrO2 to catalyze oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, its catalytic activity is principally restricted by the low density of exposed active sites. Herein, we design hierarchically structured oxygen electrodes with a hierarchical nitrogen doped carbon layer on macroporous carbon cloth (termed as ). The outer NCLs are well-controlled with the same chemical components and defect degrees, but different geometric structures. It is noted that only catalytic moieties adjacent to mesopores and macropores can be utilized. The multi-scaled possesses a large oxygen diffusion coefficient (4.97 × 10−3 cm2 s−1) and thereby a high utilization of catalytic sites. Resultingly, exhibits excellent catalytic activity for both ORR (half-wave potential of 0.855 V) and OER (1.580 V at 10 mA cm−2), and shows preferable activity and stability over noble Pt and IrO2 in zinc air flow batteries. This provides an insight for developing high density and accessible active sites in the practical energy device, including, but not limited to, metal-air battery, CO2 electrolyser and N2 electrolyser.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are: in rechargeable metal - air batteries, the insufficient exposure of catalytic active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as well as the low mass transfer efficiency. These problems lead to the poor catalytic performance of the catalysts, thus affecting the energy conversion efficiency of the batteries. Specifically, nitrogen - doped carbon materials, as alternative catalysts to the precious metals Pt and IrO₂, have great potential in catalyzing ORR and OER, but their catalytic activity is limited by the low density of exposed active sites. In addition, micropores are easily blocked by adsorbed water, which hinders the adsorption of reactants and the desorption of products, further reducing the catalytic activity. Therefore, it is crucial to design a hierarchical oxygen electrode that can accelerate mass transfer and increase the utilization rate of active sites. To solve the above problems, the author designed an oxygen electrode (CC@NCL) with a multi - scale structure, which is achieved by depositing a hierarchical nitrogen - doped carbon layer on a macroporous carbon cloth. This design not only improves the oxygen diffusion coefficient (reaching \(4.97\times 10^{-3}\, \text{cm}^2\, \text{s}^{-1}\)), but also greatly increases the exposure of catalytic sites. The experimental results show that CC@NCL exhibits excellent ORR and OER catalytic activities, and shows better catalytic activity and stability than commercial Pt/C and IrO₂ catalysts in zinc - air flow batteries. In conclusion, this research aims to develop an efficient and practical oxygen electrode to improve the energy conversion efficiency and stability of rechargeable metal - air batteries.
