Abstract:In this work, we report the formation of a novel, aqueous-based thermo-responsive, supramolecular gelling system prepared by a convenient and efficient self-assembly of a long-chain amino-amide and citric acid. To determine the viscosity behavior and to gain insights into the gelation mechanism, a complementary combination of techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and sinusoidal oscillatory tests, were used. The supramolecular gelator exhibited remarkably reversible sol-gel transitions induced by temperature at 76 °C. At a concentration of 5 wt%, the zero-frequency viscosity of the supramolecular system increased by about four orders of magnitude (from 4.2 to 12 563 Pa s) by changing the temperature from 23 °C to 76 °C. The viscous nature of the supramolecular gel could be preserved up to 90 °C. The synergistic combination of the hydrogen bonding between amino and carboxylic acid groups and the electrostatic interactions arising from the protonation of the amino-group and the deprotonation of carboxylic acid groups enhanced at higher temperatures is presumably responsible for the thermo-responsive behavior. We anticipate that these supramolecular gelators can be beneficial in various applications such as hydrogel scaffolds for regenerative medicine, personal care products and cosmetics, and enhanced oil recovery as viscosity modifiers.

Abstract:Macromonomers bearing tridentate 2,6-bis(1,2,3-trizol-4-yl)pyridine (BTP) ligand unit synthesized via CuAAC "click" chemistry in the middle of the chain and two ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) motifs on the ends linked to the central BTP unit via PEGs of various lengths were synthesized and used for the study of gelation both with and without the presence of Eu(III) ions. Various interesting gelation behaviors were found. Gels exhibited various multi-responsive properties, including photoluminescence, mechanoresponsive properties, self-healing abilities, thermorepsonsive properties and chemoresponsive properties. The different gelation abilities and multi-responsive properties for different systems were shown to be resulted from difference in PEG linker lengths and the introduction of orthogonal metal-ligand coordination and hydrogen bonding interactions. The selective responsiveness to different chemicals would allow the development of modular sensory systems that utilize a combination of orthogonal supramolecular interactions. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:AbstractThis manuscript presents a brief overview of recent advances in multistimuli‐responsive supramolecular gels (MRSGs). The synthesis of MRSGs with faster and smarter responsive abilities to a variety of external stimuli, such as redox reagents, pH changes, ligands, and coupling reagents, is one key issue for the upgrade of current molecular motors, signal sensors, shape memory devices, drug delivery systems, display devices, and other devices. However, the design rules of MRSGs are still not well understood. The lack of information about the relationship between the spatial structure and gelation behavior of existing gelators means that the knowledge required to design new gelators by the addition of functional moieties to well‐known gelators is lacking. Insights into the gelation pathway of known gelators may bring inspiration to researchers who want to exploit elegant designs and specific building blocks to obtain their own MRSGs with predictable stimuli‐responsive abilities.

Abstract:Utilizing metal-ligand binding as the driving force for self-assembly of a ditopic ligand, which consists of a 2,6-bis-( 1'-methylbenzimidazolyl)-4-oxypyridine moiety attached to either end of a penta( ethylene glycol) core, in the presence of a transition metal ion ( Zn-II) and a lanthanide metal ion ( La-III), we have achieved formation of stimuli-responsive metallo-supramolecular gels. We describe herein a series of experimental studies, including optical and confocal microscopy, dynamic light scattering, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and rheology, to explore the properties of such gels, as well as the nature of the gelation mechanism. Morphological and X-ray diffraction observations suggest gelation occurs via the flocculation of semicrystalline colloidal particles, which results in the gels exhibiting pronounced yielding and thixotropic behavior. Application of mechanical stress results in a decrease in the particle size, which is accompanied by an increase in gel strength after removal of the stress. Moreover, studies show that the presence of lanthanide( III) perchlorate increases the mechano-responsiveness of the gels, as a consequence of reduced crystallinity of the colloidal particles, presumably due to the different coordination ability of lanthanide( III) and zinc( II), which changes the nature of the self-assembly in these materials.

Abstract:With the increasing development of supramolecular chemistry, stimulus-responsive supramolecular gels as a supramolecular material attract more attention. Supramolecular gels are self-assembled by non-covalent forces, when supramolecular gels are stimulated by temperature, light, pH, chemistry substances, mechanical strength etc., the gels can produce the appropriate response, such as sol-gel transition, change in color or fluorescence. Stimulus-responsive supramolecular gels have very good prospects in the areas of ion recognition materials, self-healing materials and biomaterials. This paper reviews the progress of stimulus responsive supramolecular gels in the past five years. According to the different types of stimulation, the gels are devided into the following categories: heat-sensitive organic gel, chemistry substances and pH-responsive supramolecular gels, light-sensitive organic gel, redox-responsive supramolecular gel, mechanical force-responsive supramolecular gels and multiple stimuli-responsive supramolecular gel. According to these classifications, the supramolecular gels are introduced and at the same time, the developing orientation for further research is presented.

Abstract:Metallo-supramolecular gels were prepared using a ligand macromolecule containing the tridentate 2,6-bis-(1,2,3-trizol-4-yl)pyridine (BTP) ligand unit synthesized via CuAAC "click'' chemistry in the main chain, together with transition metal ions and/or lanthanide ions. The gelation and gel properties, e. g. swelling, emission, rheological properties, thermo-and chemo-responsive properties, can be tuned by the careful selection of metal ions and their combinations, solvents, concentration, etc. Most interestingly, the gels exhibited repeatable autonomic healing ability. Moreover, the repeatable self-healing ability of the gels found practical application in the repairing of metal coatings.

Abstract:Small molecule gels with different stimuli responsiveness are endowed with different characteristics. Due to the reversibility of non-covalent bond forces and the adjustability of the self-assembly process, small molecule gels are widely used as an intelligent soft material prospect. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel gelator, stigmasteryl glycinate ferrocenoylamide (SGF), which uses plant sterols as raw materials and has multi-stimulus response performance. The gelation behavior of SGF was investigated in different solvents. The properties and mechanism of self-assembly of gels were characterized by SEM, UV-VIS, FT-IR, CAT and XRD. The intermolecular hydrogen bond nature of the gel formation and the lamellar aggregation pattern of SGF gel are revealed. Interestingly, SGF/cyclohexane gel shows excellent responsiveness to a variety of external stimuli such as temperature, thixotropic force and redox. In particular, SGF has a specific recognition ability for methanol.

Abstract:Charge-transfer salts formed by the electron donor tetrathiafulvalene and electron acceptor halogen have been the focus of significant interest in constructing high conductivity supramolecular nano-materials. However, the stable supramolecular gel systems of TTF-X2 combinations with controlled self-assembly pathways cannot be accessed easily in solvents. In this context, a novel representative organogel system was constructed according to the crown ether-monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene-l- glutamide triad. The formed gel exhibited multiple stimulus responses on various external stimuli, including temperature, sonication, anions and K+. This gel could be transformed into the charge transfer salt gel with I2, which was an important first example of the charge transfer salt gel of TTF with I2 in solvents. The same gel-gel transition was also induced by adding other inorganic oxidants (i.e., Ag+, Fe3+, Cu2+ and TFA) and π-electron acceptors (i.e., TCNQ and C60).

Abstract:A novel strategy to synthesize stimuli-responsive metal-coordinated polymeric gels (MCPGs) via one-pot CuAAC and non-covalent metal coordination chemistry was demonstrated. 4'-(4-Prop-2-ynyloxyphenyl)-2,2 ':6 ',2 "-terpyridine (Terpy-phi-CH2C equivalent to CH) and alpha,omega-diazido/hydroxyl PEG (PEG(45)(N-3)(2)) were used as precursors to yield linear terpyridine-terminated PEG derivatives with 1,2,3-triazole rings and terpyridine ligands in their main chains to serve as ligands for chelating a range of transition and/or lanthanide metal ions. It was found that the bridging metal complexes could not only act as branching or crosslinking sites within the three-dimensional polymer networks but could also bestow special properties to the final gels, such as stimuli-responsive and thixotropic features, thereby allowing facile and efficient design and synthesis of promising intelligent materials.

Abstract:A cross-linked supramolecular polymer network gel was prepared by orthogonal self-assembly of two homoditopic monomers and a metallic cross-linker. The gel is transparent and free-standing, which not only shows an interesting gel-sol transition in response to quadruple-stimuli, but also exhibits self-healing properties, as can be seen by the naked eye and as evidenced by rheological characterization. These unique features are all due to the dynamically reversible host-guest complexation and good mechanical properties of the cross-linked polymer network. Therefore, these fascinating properties make this supramolecular gel an unprecedentedly intelligent material.

Abstract:A photochromic metal-organic gel with thermo-, photo-, and anion-responsive behavior is obtained. Unusually, heating of the Al-ligand solution leads to gel formation and cooling to room temperature reverses the process to reform the solution. The gel is sensitive to weakly coordinating anions. Additionally, reversible photochromic transformations take place both in the solution and gel states, accompanied by reversibly switched luminescence.

Abstract:<p>It has been attracted broad interest to construct stimulus responsive supramolecular hydrogels as smart materials over the past few decades; however, the design of multi-stimuli responsive hydrogels remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a multi-stimuli responsive supramolecular hydrogel has been designed on the basis of methoxy-azobenzene-grafted poly(acrylic acid) (PAA-mAzo) and β-CD dimer, which involves the host-guest and electrostatic interactions. Besides the common thermo-responsive behavior, the hydrogel also exhibits reversible sol-gel transition under green and blue light irradiations because of the disassociation and association of host–guest interaction between mAzo and β-CD. In addition, the hydrogel turns into precipitate at low pH due to the decrease of solubility of PAA in aqueous solution. The electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged carboxylic acid groups and hydrated protons at high pH makes the recovery of hydrogel. At last, the release of rhodamine B loaded in the triple-stimuli responsive hydrogel can be accelerated by green light irradiation and low pH, which demonstrates the potential applications in biomedical materials.</p>

Abstract:A network‐structured supramolecular gel is constructed through host‐guest interactions between conjugated ligands and metal ions, leading to enhanced mechanical properties and excellent electrical conductivity. This overcomes the problem of insufficient conductance due to the presence of solvent in the interstitial region of the supramolecular gel. Supramolecular gels can undergo reversible sol‐gel transitions by controlling the pH or temperature of the system. In addition, a method has been developed to determine the specific binding ratio of host‐guest molecules by conductivity tests, and has been used to verify the specific binding ratio of crown ether to potassium ions. To explain the high conductivity of supramolecular metallic gels, DFT and SEM have been employed to elucidate their conductivity mechanism.

Abstract:Smart luminescent materials that have the ability to reversibly adapt to external environmental stimuli and possess a wide range of responses are continually emerging, which place higher demands on the means of regulation and response sites. Here, europium ions (Eu3+)-directed supramolecular metallogels are constructed by orthogonal self-assembly of Eu3+ based coordination interactions and hydrogen bonding. A new organic ligand (L) is synthesized, consisting of crown ethers and two flexible amide bonds-linked 1,10-phenanthroline moieties to coordinate with Eu3+. Synergistic intermolecular hydrogen bonding in L and Eu3+-L coordination bonding enable Eu3+ and L to self-assemble into shape-persistent 3D coordination metallogels in MeOH solution. The key to success is the utilization of crown ethers, playing dual roles of acting both as building blocks to build L with C2-symmetrical structure, and as the ideal monomer for increasing the energy transfer from L to Eu3+'s excited state, thus maintaining the excellent luminescence of metallogels. Interestingly, such assemblies show K+, pH, F-, and mechano-induced reversible gel-sol transitions and tunable luminescence properties. Above findings are useful in the studies of molecular switches, dynamic assemblies, and smart luminescent materials.
