Abstract:I describe the use of techniques based on composite rotations to combat systematic errors in quantum logic gates. Although developed and described within the context of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) quantum computing these sequences should be applicable to other implementations of quantum computation.

Abstract:Composite pulses, originally developed in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), have found widespread use in experimental quantum information processing (QIP) to reduce the effects of systematic errors. Most pulses used so far have simply been adapted from existing NMR designs, and while techniques have been developed for designing composite pulses with arbitrary precision, the results have been quite complicated and have found little application. Here, I describe techniques for designing short but effective composite pulses to implement robust not gates, bringing together existing insights from NMR and QIP, and present some composite pulses.

Statistically Significant Strings are Related to Regulatory Elements in the Promoter Regions of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract:Finding out statistically significant words in DNA and protein sequences forms the basis for many genetic studies. By applying the maximal entropy principle, we give one systematic way to study the nonrandom occurrence of words in DNA or protein sequences. Through comparison with experimental results, it was shown that patterns of regulatory binding sites in Saccharomyces cerevisiae(yeast) genomes tend to occur significantly in the promoter regions. We studied two correlated gene family of yeast. The method successfully extracts the binding sites varified by experiments in each family. Many putative regulatory sites in the upstream regions are proposed. The study also suggested that some regulatory sites are a ctive in both directions, while others show directional preference.

Controlling NMR spin systems for quantum computation

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic resonance is arguably both the best available quantum technology for implementing simple quantum computing experiments and the worst technology for building large scale quantum computers that has ever been seriously put forward. After a few years of rapid growth, leading to an implementation of Shor's quantum factoring algorithm in a seven-spin system, the field started to reach its natural limits and further progress became challenging. Rather than pursuing more complex algorithms on larger systems, interest has now largely moved into developing techniques for the precise and efficient manipulation of spin states with the aim of developing methods that can be applied in other more scalable technologies and within conventional NMR. However, the user friendliness of NMR implementations means that they remain popular for proof-of-principle demonstrations of simple quantum information protocols.

Abstract:Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation has received increasing attention due to its robustness against control errors. However, all the previous schemes have to use at least two sequentially implemented gates to realize a general one-qubit gate. Based on two recent reports, we construct two Hamiltonians and experimentally realized nonadiabatic holonomic gates by a single-shot implementation in a two-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system. Two noncommuting one-qubit holonomic gates, rotating along ˆx and ˆz axes respectively, are implemented by evolving a work qubit and an ancillary qubit nonadiabatically following a quantum circuit designed. Using a sequence compiler developed for NMR quantum information processor, we optimize the whole pulse sequence, minimizing the total error of the implementation. Finally, all the nonadiabatic holonomic gates reach high unattenuated experimental fidelities over 98%.

Abstract:High-precision, robust quantum gates are essential components in quantum computation and information processing. In this study, we present an alternative perspective, exploring the potential applicability of quantum gates that exhibit heightened sensitivity to errors. We investigate such sensitive quantum gates, which, beyond their established use in in vivo NMR spectroscopy, quantum sensing, and polarization optics, may offer significant utility in precision quantum metrology and error characterization. Utilizing the composite pulses technique, we derive three fundamental quantum gates with narrowband and passband characteristics -- the X (NOT) gate, the Hadamard gate, and gates enabling arbitrary rotations. To systematically design these composite pulse sequences, we introduce the SU(2), modified-SU(2), and regularization random search methodologies. These approaches, many of which are novel, demonstrate superior performance compared to established sequences in the literature, including NB1, SK1, and PB1.

Abstract:We consider two new quantum gate mechanisms based on nuclear spins in hyperpolarized solid $^{129}Xe$ and HCl mixtures and inorganic semiconductors. We propose two schemes for implementing a controlled NOT (CNOT) gate based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from hyperpolarized solid $^{129}Xe$ and HCl mixtures and optically pumped NMR in semiconductors. Such gates might be built up with particular spins addressable based on MRI techniques and optical pumping and optical detection techniques. The schemes could be useful for implementing actual quantum computers in terms of a cellular automata architecture.

Abstract:In creating a large-scale quantum information processor, the ability to construct control pulses for implementing an arbitrary quantum circuit in a scalable manner is an important requirement. For liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computing, a circuit is generally realized through a sequence of selective soft pulses, in which various control imperfections exist and are to be corrected. In this work, we present a comprehensive analysis of the errors arisen in a selective pulse network by using the zeroth and first order average Hamiltonian theory. Effective correction rules are derived for adjusting important pulse parameters such as irradiation frequencies, rotational angles and transmission phases of the selective pulses to increase the control fidelity. Simulations show that applying our compilation procedure for a given circuit is efficient and can greatly reduce the error accumulation.

Abstract:A significant development in computing has been the discovery 1 that the computational power of quantum computers exceeds that of Turing machines. Central to the experimental realization of quantum information processing is the construction of fault-tolerant quantum logic gates. Their operation requires conditional quantum dynamics, in which one sub-system undergoes a coherent evolution that depends on the quantum state of another sub-system 2 ; in particular, the evolving sub-system may acquire a conditional phase shift. Although conventionally dynamic in origin, phase shifts can also be geometric 3 , 4 . Conditional geometric (or ‘Berry’) phases depend only on the geometry of the path executed, and are therefore resilient to certain types of errors; this suggests the possibility of an intrinsically fault-tolerant way of performing quantum gate operations. Nuclear magnetic resonance techniques have already been used to demonstrate both simple quantum information processing 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 and geometric phase shifts 10 , 11 , 12 . Here we combine these ideas by performing a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment in which a conditional Berry phase is implemented, demonstrating a controlled phase shift gate.
Composite pulses for robust universal control of singlet-triplet qubits

Abstract:Precise qubit manipulation is fundamental to quantum computing, yet experimental systems generally have stray coupling between the qubit and the environment, which hinders the necessary high-precision control. We report here the first theoretical progress in correcting an important class of errors stemming from fluctuations in the magnetic field gradient, in the context of the singlet-triplet spin qubit in a semiconductor double quantum dot. These errors are not amenable to correction via control techniques developed in other contexts, since here the experimenter has precise control only over the rotation rate about the z-axis of the Bloch sphere, and this rate is furthermore restricted to be positive and bounded. Despite these strong constraints, we construct simple electrical pulse sequences that, for small gradients, carry out z-axis rotations while canceling errors up to the sixth order in gradient fluctuations, and for large gradients, carry out arbitrary rotations while canceling the leading order error.

Abstract:We present a genetic algorithm for finding a set of pulse sequences, or rotations, for a given quantum logic gate, as implemented by NMR. We demonstrate the utility of the method by showing that shorter sequences than have been previously published can be found for both a CNOT and for the central part of Shor's algorithm (for N=15.) Artificial intelligence techniques like the genetic algorithm here presented have an enormous potential for simplifying the implementation of working quantum computers.

Abstract:We perform comprehensive experimental tests of various composite pulse sequences using one of open-access IBM's quantum processors, based on superconducting transmon qubits. We implement explicit pulse control of the qubit by making use of the opportunity of low-level access to the backend, provided by IBM Quantum. We obtain the excitation profiles for a huge variety of broadband, narrowband, and passband composite pulses, producing any pre-chosen target probabilities, ranging from zero to one. We also test universal composite pulses which compensate errors in any experimental parameter. In all experiments, we find excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental excitation profiles. This proves both the composite pulses as a very efficient and flexible quantum control tool and the high quality of the IBM quantum processor. As an extreme example, we test and observe a pronounced narrowband excitation profile for a composite sequence of as many as 1001 pulses.

Abstract:Using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques with a solution of cytosine molecules, we show an implementation of certain quantum logic gates (including NOT gate, square-root of NOT gate and controlled-NOT gate), which have central importance in quantum computing. In addition, experimental results show that nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can efficiently measure the result of quantum computing without attendant wave-functions collapse.

Abstract:An NMR realization of a two-qubit quantum gate which processes quantum information indirectly via couplings to a spectator qubit is presented in the context of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. This enables a successful comprehensive NMR implementation of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm for functions with three argument bits and demonstrates a technique essential for multi-qubit quantum computation.

Abstract:We have taken significant steps towards the realization of a practical quantum computer: using nuclear spins and magnetic resonance techniques at room temperature, we provided proof of principle of quantum computing in a series of experiments which culminated in the implementation of the simplest instance of Shor's quantum algorithm for prime factorization (15=3x5), using a seven-spin molecule. This algorithm achieves an exponential advantage over the best known classical factoring algorithms and its implementation represents a milestone in the experimental exploration of quantum computation. These remarkable successes have been made possible by the synthesis of suitable molecules and the development of many novel techniques for initialization, coherent control and readout of the state of multiple coupled nuclear spins. Furthermore, we devised and implemented a model to simulate both unitary and decoherence processes in these systems, in order to study and quantify the impact of various technological as well as fundamental sources of errors. In summary, this work has given us a much needed practical appreciation of what it takes to build a quantum computer. While liquid NMR quantum computing has well-understood scaling limitations, many of the techniques that originated from this research may find use in other, perhaps more scalable quantum computer implementations.

Abstract:It is shown theoretically how to use the EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) technique, using electron spins as qubits, coupled with each other by the exchange interaction, to set the configuration of n qubits (n=1,2,3,4) at resonance, in conjunction with pulses, to construct the NOT (one qubit), CNOT (two qubits), CCNOT (three qubits), CCCNOT (four qubits) Toffoli gates, which can be exploited to build a quantum computer. This is unique to EPR, wherein exchange-coupled electron spins are used. This is not possible with NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), that uses nuclear spins as qubits, which do not couple with each other by the exchange interaction.

Abstract:We introduce universal broadband composite pulse sequences for robust high-fidelity population inversion in two-state quantum systems, which compensate deviations in any experimental parameter (e.g. pulse amplitude, pulse duration, detuning from resonance, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc.) and are applicable with any pulse shape. We demonstrate the efficiency and universality of these composite pulses by experimental data on rephasing of atomic coherences in a $\text{Pr}^{3+}\text{:}\text{Y}_2\text{SiO}_5$ crystal.

Abstract:A number of composite pulse (CP) sequences for four basic quantum phase gates -- the Z, S, T and general phase gates -- are presented. The CP sequences contain up to 18 pulses and can compensate up to eight orders of experimental errors in the pulse amplitude and duration. The short CP sequences (up to 8 pulses) are calculated analytically and the longer ones numerically. The results demonstrate the remarkable flexibility of CPs accompanied by extreme accuracy and robustness to errors -- three features that cannot be simultaneously achieved by any other coherent control technique. These CP sequences, in particular the Z, S and T gates, can be very useful quantum control tools in quantum information applications, because they provide a variety of options to find the optimal balance between ultrahigh fidelity, error range and speed, which may be different in different physical applications.

Abstract:Quantum computation holds the promise of solving computational problems which are believed to be classically intractable. However, in practice, quantum devices are still limited by their relatively short coherence times and imperfect circuit-hardware mapping. In this work, we present the parallelization of pre-calibrated pulses at the hardware level as an easy-to-implement strategy to optimize quantum gates. Focusing on gates, we demonstrate that such parallelization leads to improved fidelity and gate time reduction, when compared to serial concatenation. As measured by Cycle Benchmarking and Process Tomography, we reduce gate errors by half. We show that this strategy can be applied to other gates like the CNOT and CZ, and it may benefit tasks such as Hamiltonian simulation problems, amplitude amplification, and error-correction codes.

Towards shorter composite 180° refocusing pulses for NMR

Abstract:Novel composite 180° pulses are designed for use in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and verified experimentally using solution-state 1H NMR spectroscopy. Rather than being constructed from 180° pulses (as in much recent work), the new composite pulses are constructed from 90° pulses, with the aim of finding sequences that are shorter overall than existing equivalents. The primary (but not exclusive) focus is on composite pulses that are dual compensated - simultaneously broadband with respect to both inhomogeneity of the radiofrequency field and resonance offset - and have antisymmetric phase schemes, such that they can be used to form spin echoes without the introduction of a phase error. In particular, a new antisymmetric dual-compensated refocusing pulse is presented that is constructed from ten 90° pulses, equivalent to just five 180° pulses.
