Abstract:However, the group of complex thalloid liverworts — which includes the model plant Marchantia polymorpha — innovated by developing specialized pegged rhizoids, in addition to already existing smooth rhizoids. Pegged rhizoids are basically empty tubes with thick cell walls, made of dead cells and assembled in external pseudovascular bundles along the midrib of the flat thallus. These structures somewhat resemble xylem from vascular plants. In a recent study published in Current Biology , Justin Goodrich, Moritz Nowack and colleagues show that — despite functional and developmental similarities — the master genes behind this example of convergent evolution are different. In vascular plants, xylem cell differentiation is controlled by a conserved family of master transcription factors known as VASCULAR-RELATED NAC-DOMAIN (VND). Whereas there is evidence of functional conservation of VND pathways in mosses, the Marchantia lineage appears to have evolved water-conducting pipes independently, building a novel gene regulation network and master switches by recruiting unrelated bHLH transcription factors, in this case ZHOUPI (ZOU) and INDUCER OF CBF EXPRESSION 1 (ICE1).
