Abstract:Optical chiral metamaterials have recently attracted considerable attention because they offer new and exciting opportunities for fundamental research and practical applications. Through pragmatic designs, the chiroptical response of chiral metamaterials can be several orders of magnitude higher than that of natural chiral materials. Meanwhile, the local chiral fields can be enhanced by plasmonic resonances to drive a wide range of physical and chemical processes in both linear and nonlinear regimes. In this review, we will discuss the fundamental principles of chiral metamaterials, various optical chiral metamaterials realized by different nanofabrication approaches, and the applications and future prospects of this emerging field.

Abstract:This work develops a deep learning‐driven data iteration strategy alongside a global optimization network, showcasing excellent capabilities in expediting metasurface design and unearthing complex light‐matter interactions. As anticipated, it enables the customized and easy‐to‐implement design of chiral metasurfaces and advanced sensing abilities for enantiomer‐specific analysis of bio‐samples in a calibration‐free manner. As a 2D metamaterial, metasurfaces offer an unprecedented avenue to facilitate light‐matter interactions. The current "one‐by‐one design" method is hindered by time‐consuming, repeated testing within a confined space. However, intelligent design strategies for metasurfaces, limited by data‐driven properties, have rarely been explored. To address this gap, a data iterative strategy based on deep learning, coupled with a global optimization network is proposed, to achieve the customized design of chiral metasurfaces. This methodology is applied to precisely identify different chiral molecules in a label‐free manner. Fundamentally different from the traditional approach of collecting data purely through simulation, the proposed data generation strategy encompasses the entire design space, which is inaccessible by conventional methods. The dataset quality is significantly improved, with a 21‐fold increase in the number of chiral structures exhibiting the desired circular dichroism (CD) response (>0.6). The method's efficacy is validated by a monolayer structure that is easily prepared, demonstrating advanced sensing abilities for enantiomer‐specific analysis of bio‐samples. These results demonstrate the superior capability of data‐driven schemes in photonic design and the potential of chiral metasurface‐based platforms for calibration‐free biosensing applications. The proposed approach will accelerate the development of complex systems for rapid molecular detection, spectroscopic imaging, and other applications.

Chiral Metasurface Multifocal Lens in the Terahertz Band Based on Deep Learning

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces have garnered significant interest as an emerging field of metamaterials, primarily due to their exceptional capability to manipulate phase distributions at interfaces. However, the on-demand design of chiral metasurface structures remains a challenging task. To address this challenge, this paper introduces a deep learning-based network model for rapid calculation of chiral metasurface structure parameters. The network achieves a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.025 and enables the design of chiral metasurface structures with a circular dichroism (CD) of 0.41 at a frequency of 1.169 THz. By changing the phase of the chiral metasurface, it is possible to produce not only a monofocal lens but also a multifocal lens. Well-designed chiral metasurface lenses allow us to control the number and position of focal points of the light field. This chiral metasurface, designed using deep learning, demonstrates great multifocal focus characteristics and holds great potential for a wide range of applications in sensing and holography.

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces have great influence on the development of holography. Nonetheless, it is still challenging to design chiral metasurface structures on demand. As a machine learning method, deep learning has been applied to design metasurface in recent years. This work uses a deep neural network with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.03 to inverse design chiral metasurface. With the help of this approach, a chiral metasurface with circular dichroism (CD) values higher than 0.4 is designed. The static chirality of the metasurface and the hologram with an image distance of 3000 μm are characterized. The imaging results are clearly visible and demonstrate the feasibility of our inverse design approach.

Abstract:Abstract Optical metasurfaces with high quality factors (Q-factors) of chiral resonances can boost substantially light-matter interaction for various applications of chiral response in ultrathin, active, and nonlinear metadevices. However, current approaches lack the flexibility to enhance and tune the chirality and Q-factor simultaneously. Here, we suggest a design of chiral metasurface supporting bound state in the continuum (BIC) and demonstrate experimentally chiroptical responses with ultra-high Q-factors and near-perfect circular dichroism (CD = 0.93) at optical frequencies. We employ the symmetry-reduced meta-atoms with high birefringence supporting winding elliptical eigenstate polarizations with opposite helicity. It provides a convenient way for achieving the maximal planar chirality tuned by either breaking in-plane structure symmetry or changing illumination angle. Beyond linear CD, we also achieved strong near-field enhancement CD and near-unitary nonlinear CD in the same planar chiral metasurface design with circular eigen-polarization. Sharply resonant chirality realized in planar metasurfaces promises various practical applications including chiral lasers and chiral nonlinear filters.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces with high-Q chiral resonances can boost light-matter interaction for various applications of chiral response for ultrathin, active, and nonlinear metadevices. Usually, such metasurfaces require sophisticated depth-resolved nanofabrication to realize subwavelength stereo-nanostructures, posing overwhelming challenges, especially in the short-wavelength range. Here, we suggest a novel planar design for chiral metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum (BICs) and demonstrate experimentally chiroptical responses with record-high Q-factors (Q=390) and near-perfect circular dichroism (CD=0.93) at optical frequencies. The symmetry-reduced meta-atoms are highly birefringent and support winding elliptical eigen-polarizations with opposite helicity surrounding the BIC polarization singularity, providing a convenient way for achieving maximal planar chirality tuned by either breaking in-plane symmetry or changing illumination direction. Such sharply resonant chirality realized in planar metasurfaces promises various practical applications in classical and quantum optics including chiral sensing, enantiomer selection, and chiral quantum emitters.

Origami-Inspired Chiral Metamaterials with Tunable Circular Dichroism Through Mechanically Guided Three-Dimensional Assembly

Abstract:Chiral metamaterials with artificially engineered subwavelength structures can effectively couple incident waves and lead diverse electromagnetic responses to various circular polarizations. Here, we designed and fabricated an origami-inspired reconfigurable three-dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterial, whose circular dichroism can be dynamically controlled by simple mechanical stretch of its bonded elastomer substrate. The chiral metamaterial was obtained from a patterned planar achiral metasurface through mechanically guided 3D assembly based on the prestrain approach, which ensures deterministic and uniform deformations for each building block during stretching. Numerical simulations and experimental observations were carried out to illustrate the deformation mechanism and the electromagnetic response of the metamaterials under the applied strain. It is shown that the transmissions and chiroptical activities can be continuously tuned from complete spin selectivity to partial spin selectivity when the applied strain increases. The maximum circular dichroism was experimentally measured as high as 0.98, which can be even adjusted to near zero by mechanical stretching. Our work demonstrated an easily operated and promising way to control the chirality of origami-inspired metamaterial in the microwave region, which can be further extended to the terahertz frequency biosensing, imaging, and spectroscope.

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces have been widely used in sensing, imaging and other fields because they can manipulate light through the efficient circular dichroism (CD). However, its on-demand design is still a very challenging task. In this work, we propose an on-demand multiple reverse design based on deep learning, named target-driven conditional generative network (TCGN). It can reverse design the metasurface structure that meets the required CD, and its mean square error (MAE) is 0.0089. We use this method to inversely design multiple sets of metasurfaces with different structures, and all their CD values can exceed 0.36. Both simulations and experiments prove the feasibility and effectiveness of using deep learning to reverse design metasurfaces. In addition, the designed metasurface can realize chiral wavefront control under dual frequency. This design method based on deep learning can rapidly and efficiently design the chiral metasurfaces, which provides a new way for the design of metasurfaces.

Abstract:Chiral plasmonic metamaterials can amplify chiral signals, resulting in circular dichroism (CD) responses that are several orders of magnitude far beyond those of nature. However, the design process of chiral plasmonic metamaterials based on conventional methods is time-consuming. In recent years, the combination of deep learning (DL) and nanophotonics have accelerated the design of nanophotonic devices. Here, we construct the fully connected neural network (FC-NN) model for the forward prediction and inverse design of chiral plasmonic metamaterials structures and introduce the permutation importance approach to optimize the model and increase its interpretability. Our experimental results show that using the peak magnitude of CD and the corresponding wavelength instead of the entire spectrum as the output in the forward prediction improves the accuracy of the peak magnitude of CD prediction, avoids the introduction of auxiliary networks, and simplifies the network structure; The permutation importance analysis shows that the gold length of the resonator is the most critical structural parameter affecting the CD response. In the inverse design, the permutation importance method helps us to make feature selections for the input of the network. By reducing 251 inputs (the whole CD spectrum) to 4 inputs (the peak magnitude of CD and the corresponding wavelength), the network can still maintain a good prediction performance and decrease the training time of the network. Our proposed method can be extended not only to other DL models to study the CD response of chiral metamaterials but also to other areas where DL is combined with metamaterials to accelerate the system optimization and design process of nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Dynamic control of circular dichroism in photonic structures is critically important for compact spectrometers, stereoscopic displays, and information processing exploiting multiple degrees of freedom. Metasurfaces can help miniaturize chiral devices but only produce static and limited chiral responses. While external stimuli can tune resonances, their modulations are often weak, and reversing continuously the sign of circular dichroism is extremely challenging. Here, we demonstrate the dynamically tunable chiral response of resonant metasurfaces supporting chiral bound states in the continuum combining them with phase-change materials. Phase transition between amorphous and crystalline phases allows for control of chiral response and varies chirality rapidly from −0.947 to +0.958 backward and forward via the chirality continuum. Our demonstrations underpin the rapid development of chiral photonics and its applications.

Abstract:AbstractBound states in the continuum represent a captivating and significant phenomenon in the realms of photonics, materials science, and quantum mechanics. These exceptional resonant states have emerged as crucial elements in a diverse array of nanotechnology applications including chiral nanophotonics. Applying bound states in the continuum for chiral applications is a challenging problem and usually requires some additional complicated steps such as multi‐layer lithography, adding superstrate with index matching materials and geometry parameters adjusting. Nevertheless, creating a structure placed in inhomogeneous background that is capable to perfectly convert one circular polarization to the opposite one is still a challenging problem. This work presents chiral metasurface based on bound states in the continuum allowing to achieve perfect unitary circular conversion in an inhomogeneous environment. This approach is based on a coupling of two chiral but not perfect resonances which makes it possible to get one mode with chiral dichroism value of 1. A theoretical model is built, perform numerical calculation and conduct an experimental verification to prove this concept. The presented results could find many applications in sensing, optics, telecommunications, biomedical and chemical analysis.

Abstract:Manipulating circular dichroism in chiral metasurfaces has been increasingly important for a wide range of polarization-sensitive photonic applications. However, simple methods for presenting chiral nanostructures with tunable and considerable chiroptical responses in near-infrared-I regime remains underexplored. Here, two sheets of suspended symmetric bilayer metagratings fabricated via single-step electron beam lithography are stacked into a moiré metasurface with the circular dichroism value reaching up to 20.9°. The chirality of the moiré metasurface can be fully tuned in both the sign and the magnitude by the in-plane twisted angle between the two sheets of metagratings. The multilayered design is accessible to the coupling of hybridized plasmons for governing the chiroptical properties in near-infrared-I. The ratio between the resonance wavelength and the grating period is about 1.65, which is much lower compared to the ones in most of existing moiré metasurfaces with strong chiroptical responses. Furthermore, the superchiral fields in the inter-sheet region are further exploited for label-free enantiodiscrimination with the ultrahigh sensitivity of 10.1 nm per fmol mm-2. The proposed moiré metasurfaces with strong near-infrared-I chirality hold great potential for supporting polarization engineering and bimolecular detection, paving a way for advanced applications in medical diagnosis, biomedical imaging, and display technologies.

Abstract:Three-dimensional chiral optical metamaterials have attracted tremendous interests due to their enhanced chiroptical responses. Here we report an S-shape based folded metamaterial which can realize the tunable chiroptical property of multispectral effects in the mid-infrared region. This folded S-shaped metamaterial exhibits distinctive chiroptical responses under the irradiation of circularly polarized light with different spin states and it achieves two strong circular dichroism signals at 5μm and 7.9μm, respectively. We attribute the spin-selective chiroptical characteristic to the intrinsic mechanism of the parallel and antiparallel coupling modes between induced electric dipoles and magnetic dipoles. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the chiroptical response is easily regulated by tuning its structural parameters. These properties promise various strong application potentials, such as spin-selective optical wavelength multiplexing, circularly polarized spectral filters, and ultrasensitive chiral sensors.

Abstract:Strong optical rotation accompanied by very low circular dichroism is observed in visible range with a chiral dielectric metasurface. The peculiar optical chirality is explained by the coupled‐mode theory of combining two chiral resonant modes in opposite handedness and further corroborated by multipole decomposition analysis. A polarization rotation power of 54 degrees is experimentally demonstrated at the 643 nm wavelength. Enhanced chiral optical responses of metamaterials have widespread applications in chiral biosensor and polarization optics. Metamaterials with intrinsic chirality are commonly composed of complicated 3D structures, which leads to significant fabrication challenges. Recent works involving planar chiral metasurfaces have demonstrated chiral optical response by symmetry breaking, but the intrinsic optical chirality at normal incidence is usually weak. Here, a dielectric chiral metasurface is designed and fabricated, and its strong intrinsic optical chirality in visible spectrum is experimentally demonstrated. Particularly, giant optical activity with zero circular dichroism can be obtained, implying that linear polarization of the incident light passing through the metasurface can be rotated. A phenomenological model is proposed to explain the chiral optical response of the metasurface based on the superposition of two chiral optical resonances in opposite handedness. The multipole decomposition of the electric fields corroborates how the high‐order multipoles are related to the chiral optical response. These results enable the development of flat compact devices to manipulate the polarization of light flexibly.

Abstract:Chiral photonics opens new pathways to manipulate light-matter interactions and tailor the optical response of meta-surfaces and -materials by nanostructuring nontrivial patterns. Chirality of matter, such as that of molecules, and light, which in the simplest case is given by the handedness of circular polarization, have attracted much attention for applications in chemistry, nanophotonics and optical information processing. We report the design of chiral photonic structures using two machine learning methods, the evolutionary algorithm and neural network approach, for rapid and efficient optimization of optical properties for dielectric metasurfaces. The design recipes obtained for visible light in the range of transition-metal dichalcogenide exciton resonances show a frequency-dependent modification in the reflected light's degree of circular polarization, that is represented by the difference between left- and right-circularly polarized intensity. Our results suggest the facile fabrication and characterization of optical nanopatterned reflectors for chirality-sensitive light-matter coupling scenarios employing tungsten disulfide as possible active material with features such as valley Hall effect and optical valley coherence.

Abstract:Artificial chiral materials and nanostructures with strong and tuneable chiroptical activities, including sign, magnitude, and wavelength distribution, are useful owing to their potential applications in chiral sensing, enantioselective catalysis, and chiroptical devices. Thus, the inverse design and customized manufacturing of these materials is highly desirable. Here, we use an artificial intelligence (AI) guided robotic chemist to accurately predict chiroptical activities from the experimental absorption spectra and structure/process parameters, and generate chiral films with targeted chiroptical activities across the full visible spectrum. The robotic AI-chemist carries out the entire process, including chiral film construction, characterization, and testing. A machine learned reverse design model using spectrum embedded descriptors is developed to predict optimal structure/process parameters for any targeted chiroptical property. A series of chiral films with a dissymmetry factor as high as 1.9 ( g abs ~ 1.9) are identified out of more than 100 million possible structures, and their feasible application in circular polarization-selective color filters for multiplex laser display and switchable circularly polarized (CP) luminescence is demonstrated. Our findings not only provide chiral films with the highest reported chiroptical activity, but also have great fundamental value for the inverse design of chiroptical materials.

Abstract:This work presents a technique for fabricating robust 3D chiral metamaterials by projecting arbitrary planar chiral metasurfaces onto customizable and height‐adjustable 3D silicon structures. By altering the height of the spherical crown silicon substrate, the degree of cross‐coupling between the electric and magnetic dipoles can be regulated, thus allowing the CD response of the structure to be effectively controlled. Chiral metamaterials possess unique optical chiral responses, and the attainment of remarkable intrinsic chirality typically necessitates the disruption of their mirror symmetry to facilitate cross‐coupling between electric and magnetic dipoles. However, achieving such symmetry breaking in a flexible and controllable manner remains challenging due to the limited range of applications afforded by available methodologies. Here, a method is proposed for fabricating robust three‐dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterials by projecting arbitrary planar chiral metasurfaces onto on‐demand height‐tunable 3D silicon structures, thereby effectively modulating their optical chiral responses through continuously tuning the degree of cross‐coupling between dipoles. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate this approach's ability to precisely control circular dichroism (CD) from a non‐chiral state to various activated and enhanced chirality. Enhancing CD with high precision and continuous control manners can naturally provide an advanced opportunity and platform for the future design and actual applications of chiral optical systems.

Chiroptical phenomena inspire wide interdisciplinary investigations, which require advanced designs to reach strong chirality for practical applications. The development of artificial intelligence provides a new vision for the manipulation of light-matter interaction beyond the theoretical interpretation. Here, we report a self-consistent framework named the Bayesian optimization and convolutional neural network that combines Bayesian optimization and deep convolutional neural network algorithms to calculate and optimize optical properties of metallic nanostructures. Both electric-field distributions at the near field and reflection spectra at the far field are calculated and self-learned to suggest better structure designs and provide possible explanations for the origin of the optimized properties, which enables wide applications for future nanostructure analysis and design.
Controlling the broadband enhanced light chirality with L-shaped dielectric metamaterials

Abstract:The inherently weak chiroptical responses of natural materials limit their usage for controlling and enhancing chiral light-matter interactions. Recently, several nanostructures with subwavelength scale dimensions were demonstrated, mainly due to the advent of nanofabrication technologies, as a potential alternative to efficiently enhance chirality. However, the intrinsic lossy nature of metals and inherent narrowband response of dielectric planar thin films or metasurface structures pose severe limitations toward the practical realization of broadband and tailorable chiral systems. Here, we tackle these problems by designing all-dielectric silicon-based L-shaped optical metamaterials based on tilted nanopillars that exhibit broadband and enhanced chiroptical response in transmission operation. We use an emerging bottom-up fabrication approach, named glancing angle deposition, to assemble these dielectric metamaterials on a wafer scale. The reported strong chirality and optical anisotropic properties are controllable in terms of both amplitude and operating frequency by simply varying the shape and dimensions of the nanopillars. The presented nanostructures can be used in a plethora of emerging nanophotonic applications, such as chiral sensors, polarization filters, and spin-locked nanowaveguides.
