Abstract:We prove that an m-dimensional minimal variety in a Riemannian manifold cannot touch the boundary at a point where the sum of the smallest m principal curvatures is greater than 0. We also prove an analogous result for varieties with bounded mean curvature.

Abstract:The necessity of a Maximum Principle arises naturally when one is interested in the study of qualitative properties of solutions to partial differential equations. In general, to ensure the validity of these kind of principles one has to consider some additional assumptions on the ambient manifold or on the differential operator. The present work aims to address, using both of these approaches, the problem of proving Maximum Principles for second order, elliptic operators acting on unbounded Riemannian domains under Dirichlet boundary conditions. Hence there is a natural division of this article in two distinct and standalone sections.

Abstract:We define and prove the existence of unique solutions of an asymptotic Plateau problem for spacelike maximal surfaces in the pseudo-hyperbolic space of signature (2, n): the boundary data is given by loops on the boundary at infinity of the pseudo-hyperbolic space which are limits of positive curves. We also discuss a compact Plateau problem. The required compactness arguments rely on an analysis of the pseudo-holomorphic curves defined by the Gauss lifts of the maximal surfaces.

Abstract:Using a maximum principle for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow, we give new proofs of a rigidity theorem for rotationally symmetric compact self-shrinkers and a result about the asymptotic behavior of self-shrinkers. This comparison argument also implies a linear bound for the second fundamental form of self-shrinking surfaces under natural assumptions. As a consequence, translating solitons can be related to these self-shrinkers.

Abstract:Given a rational elliptic surface over a number field, we study the collection of fibers whose Mordell--Weil rank is greater than the generic rank. We give conditions on the singular fibers to assure that the collection of fibers for which the rank jumps of at least 3 is not thin.

Abstract:This note aims to give a better understanding and some remarks about recent preprint ``Spiral Minimal Products". In particular, 1. it should be pointed out that a generalized Delaunay construction among minimal Lagrangians of complex projective spaces has been set up. This is a general structural result working for immersion and current situations. 2. uncountably many new regular (or irregular) special Lagrangian cones with finite density and ``regular" (or irregular) special Lagrangian cones with infinite density in complex Euclidean spaces can be found.

Abstract:Let p be the unique singularity of a normal two-dimensional Stein space V. Let m be the maximal ideal in V O p _V{\mathcal {O}_p} , the local ring of germs of holomorphic functions at p. We first define the maximal ideal cycle which serves to identify the maximal ideal. We give an “upper” estimate for maximal ideal cycle in terms of the canonical divisor which is computable via the topological information, i.e., the weighted dual graph of the singularity. Let M → V M \to V be a resolution of V. It is known that h = dim H 1 ( M , O ) h\, = \,\dim \,{H^1}(M,\,\mathcal {O}) is independent of resolution. Rational singularities in the sense of M. Artin are equivalent to h = 0 h\, = \,0 . Minimally elliptic singularity in the sense of Laufer is equivalent to saying that h = 1 h\, = \,1 and V O p _V{\mathcal {O}_p} is Gorenstein. In this paper we develop a theory for a general class of weakly elliptic singularities which satisfy a maximality condition. Maximally elliptic singularities may have h arbitrarily large. Also minimally elliptic singlarities are maximally elliptic singularities. We prove that maximally elliptic singularities are Gorenstein singularities. We are able to identify the maximal ideal. Therefore, the important invariants of the singularities (such as multiplicity) are extracted from the topological information. For weakly elliptic singularities we introduce a new concept called “elliptic sequence". This elliptic sequence is defined purely topologically, i.e., it can be computed explicitly via the intersection matrix. We prove that —K, where K is the canonical divisor, is equal to the summation of the elliptic sequence. Moreover, the analytic data dim H 1 ( M , O ) \dim \,{H^1}(M,\,\mathcal {O}) is bounded by the topological data, the length of elliptic sequence. We also prove that h = 2 h\, = \,2 and V O p _V{\mathcal {O}_p} Gorenstein implies that the singularity is weakly elliptic.

Abstract:In the setting of fractional minimal surfaces, we prove that if two nonlocal minimal sets are one included in the other and share a common boundary point, then they must necessarily coincide. This strict maximum principle is not obvious, since the surfaces may touch at an irregular point, therefore a suitable blow-up analysis must be combined with a bespoke regularity theory to obtain this result. For the classical case, an analogous result was proved by Leon Simon. Our proof also relies on a Harnack Inequality for nonlocal minimal surfaces that has been recently introduced by Xavier Cabré and Matteo Cozzi and which can be seen as a fractional counterpart of a classical result by Enrico Bombieri and Enrico Giusti. In our setting, an additional difficulty comes from the analysis of the corresponding nonlocal integral equation on a hypersurface, which presents a remainder whose sign and fine properties need to be carefully addressed.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

Abstract:We argue that the fundamental solution corresponding to a maximal rank differential operator, where the symbol is regarded as a vector valued distribution, is not necessarily very regular. Thus, for a fundamental solution, the property of being very regular, is not invariant to change of local coordinates.

Abstract:We consider maximum principles and related estimates for linear second order elliptic partial differential operators in n-dimensional Euclidean space, which improve previous results, with H-J Kuo, through sharp Lp dependence on the drift coefficient b. As in our previous work, the ellipticity is determined through the principal coefficient matrix A lying in sub-cones of the positive cone, which are dual cones of the Garding k-cones. Our main results are maximum principles for bounded domains, which extend those of Aleksandrov in the case k = n, together with extensions to unbounded domains, depending on appropriate integral norms of A, and corresponding local maximum principles. We also consider applications to local estimates in the uniformly elliptic case, including extensions of the Krylov-Safonov Holder and Harnack estimates.

Maximal hypersurface in a D-dimensional dynamical spacetime

Abstract:In this article, we set up a variational problem to arrive at the equation of the maximal hypersurface in the interior of a spherically symmetric evolving trapped region. In the first part of the article, we present the Lagrangian and the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations that maximize the interior volume of a trapped region that is formed dynamically due to infalling matter in D-dimensions, with and without the cosmological constant. In the second part, we explore the properties of special radii, which we call Reinhart radii, that play a crucial role in approximating the maximal interior volume of a black hole. We derive a formula to locate these Reinhart radii in terms of coordinate invariants like area radius, principle values of the energy-momentum tensor, Misner-Sharp mass, and cosmological constant. Based on this formula, we estimate the location of Reinhart radii in various scenarios: (a) the case of static BTZ black holes in (2 + 1)-dimensions and for the Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-de Sitter, and Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black holes in D-dimensions. We plot the location of the Reinhart radii in relation to the event horizon and cosmological horizon in a static D-dimensional scenario, (b) cosmological case: we prove that these Reinhart radii do not exist for homogeneous evolving dust for the zero and negative cosmological constant but exist in the presence of positive cosmological constant when the scale factor is greater than a critical value. We also show the relation between these Reinhart radii and Kodama vectors.

Abstract:We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.

Abstract:Could the location of the maximum point for a positive solution of a semilinear Poisson equation on a convex domain be independent of the form of the nonlinearity? Cima and Derrick found certain evidence for this surprising conjecture. We construct counterexamples on the half-disk, by working with the torsion function and first Dirichlet eigenfunction. On an isosceles right triangle the conjecture fails again. Yet the conjecture has merit, since the maxima of the torsion function and eigenfunction are unexpectedly close together. It is an open problem to quantify this closeness in terms of the domain and the nonlinearity.
