Abstract:Classical nanofluidic frameworks account for the confined fluid and ion transport under an electrostatic field at the solid-liquid interface, but the electronic property of the solid is often overlooked. Harvesting the interaction of the nanofluidic transport with the electron transport in solid requires a route effectively coupling ion and electron dynamics. Here we report a nanofluidic analogy of Coulomb drag for exploring the dynamic ion-electron interactions at the liquid-graphene interface. An induced electric current in graphene by ionic flow with no bias directly applied to the graphene channel is observed experimentally, featuring an opposite electron current direction to the ion current. Our experiments and ab initio calculations show that the current generation stems from the confined ion-electron interactions via a nanofluidic Coulomb drag mechanism. Our findings may open up a new dimension for nanofluidics and transport control by ion-electron coupling.

Abstract:Numerical modeling of the coupled ionic and fluidic transport in field-effect gated nanopores reveals highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, including cross-over, rectification, and particularly limiting and overlimiting conductance. The limiting and overlimiting characteristics are shown to be greatly enhanced by the inherently coupled fluid flow and correlate with electrokinetic phenomena such as concentration polarization and vortex formation. The underlying reason for the observed nonlinear characteristics is explained by considering the symmetry properties of the electrical biasing.

Abstract:Gating in ion transport is at the center of many vital living-substance transmission processes, and understanding how gating works at an atomic level is essential but intricate. However, our understanding and finite experimental findings of subcontinuum ion transport in subnanometer nanopores are still limited, which is out of reach of the classical continuum nanofluidics. Moreover, the influence of ion density on subcontinuum ion transport is poorly understood. Here we report the ion density-dependent dynamic conductance switching process in biomimetic graphene nanopores and explain the phenomenon by a reversible ion absorption mechanism. Our molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the cations near the graphene nanopore can interact with the surface charges on the nanopore, thereby realizing the switching of high- and low-conductance states. This work has deepened the understanding of gating in ion transport.

Abstract:This modeling work investigates the electrical modulation characteristics of field-effect gated nanopores. Highly nonlinear current modulations are observed in nanopores with non-overlapping electric double layers, including those with pore diameters 100 times the Debye screening length. We attribute this extended field-effect gating to a descreening effect, i.e. the counter-ions do not fully relax to screen the gating potential due to the presence of strong ionic transport.

Abstract:This theoretical study investigates the nonlinear ionic current-voltage characteristics of nano-channels that have weakly overlapping electrical double layers. Numerical simulations as well as a 1-D mathematical model are developed to reveal that the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) interplays with the concentration-polarization process and depletes the ion concentration inside the channels, thus significantly suppressing the channel conductance. The conductance may be restored at high electrical biases in the presence of recirculating vortices within the channels. As a result of the EOF-driven ion depletion, a limiting-conductance behavior is identified, which is intrinsically different from the classical limiting-current behavior.

Abstract:The mass transport behavior through nanoscale channels, greatly influenced by the structures and dynamics of nanoconfined water, plays an essential role in many biophysical processes. However, the dynamics of nanoconfined water under an external field and its effects are still not fully understood. Here, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we theoretically show that the ionic current of [Bmim][PF6] through narrow pores in graphene membrane exhibits an ionic negative differential resistance effect-the ionic current decreases as the voltage increases over a certain threshold. This effect arises from the violation of traditional fluid dynamics as the assumption of continuity and homogeneity of fluids is no longer effective in ultrathin nanopores. The gradient of electric field around the atomic-thin layer produces a strong gradient force on the polarized water inside the nanopore. This dielectrophoretically compressed water leads to a hydrostatic force that repels ions from entering the nanopore. Our findings may advance the understanding of hydrostatic mechanism, which governs ion transport through nanopores.

Abstract:Porous graphene has high mechanical strength and atomic layer thickness, which make it a promising material for material separation and biomolecule sensing. Electrostatic interactions between charges in aqueous solution are a kind of strong long-range interaction which may have great influence on the fluid transport through nanopores. Here, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate ion and water transport through a 1.05-nm-in-diameter monolayer graphene nanopore with its edge charge-modified. From the results, it is found that the nanopores are selective to counterions when they are charged. As the charge amount increases, the total ionic currents show an increase-decrease profile while the co-ion currents monotonously decrease. The co-ions rejection can reach 75% and 90% when the nanopores are negatively and positively charged, respectively. Cl ions current increases and reaches a plateau, and Na+ current decreases with the charge amount in the systems where they act as counterions. Besides, the charge modification can enhance the water transport through nanopores obviously. This is mainly due to the ion selection of nanopores. Especially, positive charges on the pore edge facilitate the water transport much more than negative charges.

Abstract:Ionic transport through nanopores is of fundamental importance for the design and development of nanofiltration membranes and novel electrochemical devices including supercapacitors, fuel cells and batteries. Recent experiments have shown an unusual variation of electrical conductance with the pore size and the electrolyte parameters that defies conventional scaling relations. Here ionic transport through voltage-gated nanopores was studied by using the classical density functional theory for ion distributions in combination with the Navier-Stokes equation for the electroosmotic flow. We identified a significant influence of the gating potential on the scaling behavior of the conductance with changes in the pore size and the salt concentration. For ion transport in narrow pores with a high gating voltage, the conductivity shows an oscillatory dependence on the pore size owing to the strong overlap of electric double layers.

Abstract:Electrohydrodynamic ion transport has been studied in nanotubes, nanoslits, and nanopores to mimic the advanced functionalities of biological ion channels. However, probing how the intricate interplay between the electrical and mechanical interactions affects ion conduction in asymmetric nanoconduits presents further obstacles. Here, ion transport across a conical nanopore embedded in a polarizable membrane under an electric field and pressure is analyzed by numerically solving a continuum model based on the Poisson, Nernst-Planck, and Navier-Stokes equations. We report an anomalous ionic current depletion, of up to 75%, and an unexpected rise in current rectification when pressure is exerted along the external electric field. Membrane polarization is revealed as the prerequisite to obtain this previously undetected electrohydrodynamic coupling. The electric field induces large surface charges at the pore tip due to its conical shape, creating nonuniform electrical double layers (EDL) with a massive accumulation of electrolyte ions near the orifice. Once applied, the pressure distorts the quasiequilibrium distribution of the EDL ions to influence the nanopore conductivity. Our fundamental approach to inspect the effect of pressure on the channel EDL (and thus ionic conductance) in contrast to its effect on the current arising from the hydrodynamic streaming of ions further explains the pressure-sensitive ion transport in different nanochannels and physical regimes manifested in past experiments, including the hitherto inexplicit mechanism behind the mechanically activated ion transport in carbon nanotubes. Abstract:The electric transport of nanoparticles passing through nanopores leads to a change in the ion current, which is essential for the detection technology of DNA sequencing and protein determination. In order to further illustrate the electrokinetic transport mechanism of particles passing through nanopores, a fully coupled continuum model is constructed by using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. The model consists of the electric field described by the Poisson equation, the concentration field described by Nernst-Planck equation, and the flow field described by the Navier-Stokes equation. Based on this model, the influence of imposed electric field and particle length on the electrokinetic transport of cylindrical particles is investigated. It is found firstly the translation velocities for the longer particles remain constant when they locate inside the nanopore. Both the ion current blockade effect and the ion current enhancement effect occur when cylindrical particles enter and exit the nanopore, respectively, for the experimental parameters employed in this research. Moreover, the particle translation velocity and current fluctuation amplitude are dominated by the electric field intensity, which can be used to adjust the particle transmission efficiency and the ion current detectability. In addition, the increase in particle length changes the particle position corresponding to the peak value of the ion current, which contributes to distinguishing particles with different lengths as well.

Abstract:Atomically thin 2D nanopores have emerged as promising platforms from nanofluidics research to practical applications. Low-frequency flicker noise in 2D nanopores limits detection accuracy and performance of nanopore sensors. However, the physical mechanisms of low-frequency noise are still under debate and achieving its control in 2D nanopores remains challenging. Here, we report multivalent-cations-modulated low-frequency noise in graphene nanopores and demonstrate that low-frequency noise originates from surface charge fluctuations induced by reversible adsorption-desorption of ions. Unexpectedly, its amplitude can be greatly controlled up to about 3 orders of magnitude by a trace of multivalent cations (at least 0.1% of concentration in mixture solutions). Moreover, low-frequency noise can be suppressed by 2 orders of magnitude via adding organic solvents with a high dielectric constant based on suppressing interactions between surface charge and ions. Our findings will facilitate understanding of low-frequency noise in nanofluidics and design of related applications including ultrasensitive nanofluidic devices.

Abstract:Continuum simulation is employed to study ion transport and fluid flow through a nanopore in a solid-state membrane under an applied potential drop. The results show the existence of concentration polarization layers on the surfaces of the membrane. The nonuniformity of the ionic distribution gives rise to an electric pressure that drives vortical motion in the fluid. There is also a net hydrodynamic flow through the nanopore due to an asymmetry induced by the membrane surface charge. The qualitative behavior is similar to that observed in a previous study using molecular dynamic simulations. The current-voltage characteristics show some nonlinear features but are not greatly affected by the hydrodynamic flow in the parameter regime studied. In the limit of thin Debye layers, the electric resistance of the system can be characterized using an equivalent circuit with lumped parameters. Generation of vorticity can be understood qualitatively from elementary considerations of the Maxwell stresses. However, the flow strength is a strongly nonlinear function of the applied field. Combination of electrophoretic and hydrodynamic effects can lead to ion selectivity in terms of valences and this could have some practical applications in separations.

Abstract:Biological ion channels exhibit exceptional gating capabilities for regulated transport and filtration across cell membranes. This study explores similar gating functions in artificial nanopores using graphene membranes. By applying direct voltage, we can dynamically control ion distribution around nanopores, allowing for real-time triggering, dynamic flow control, and adaptability to varying pore sizes. We investigate electrostatic modulation of ion transport in a stacked nanoporous graphene configuration, which mitigates defects from growth and transfer processes. Nanopores are created using oxygen plasma, enabling fine-tuning of ion transport. External voltage enhances ion conductivity at positive voltages and reduces it at negative voltages, demonstrating significant modulation by the surface potential-induced electric double layer (EDL). Voltage-dependent ion enrichment and depletion within the nanopores affect the effective surface charge density, facilitating controllable ion sieving. Results show that nanopores, with sizes comparable to hydrated ion diameters, achieve high and tunable voltage-gating functionality, enabling efficient on-demand ion transport. Voltage-gating effectively tunes ion selectivity in multilayer stacked graphene membranes, with negative voltages impeding divalent cations and positive voltages mimicking biological K+ nanochannels. This research lays the foundation for developing nanopores with tunable ion selectivity for applications in energy conversion, ion separation, and nanofluidics.

Abstract:Superfast water transport discovered in graphitic nanoconduits, including carbon nanotubes and graphene nanochannels, implicates crucial applications in separation processes and energy conversion. Yet lack of complete understanding at the single-conduit level limits development of new carbon nanofluidic structures and devices with desired transport properties for practical applications. Here, we show that the hydraulic resistance and slippage of single graphene nanochannels can be accurately determined using capillary flow and a novel hybrid nanochannel design without estimating the capillary pressure. Our results reveal that the slip length of graphene in the graphene nanochannels is around 16 nm, albeit with a large variation from 0 to 200 nm regardless of the channel height. We corroborate this finding with molecular dynamics simulation results, which indicate that this wide distribution of the slip length is due to the surface charge of graphene as well as the interaction between graphene and its silica substrate.

Abstract:Biological ion channels possess a remarkable ability to selectively modulate ionic flux and play an irreplaceable role in many life processes. The modulation of ion transport through nanopores or nanochannels has received considerable attention due to the similar transport mechanism of biological ionic channels. Graphene has become the most promising membrane material because of its good permeability, mechanical strength and chemical stability. Based on its excellent electrical conductivity, it is possible to apply the gate voltage on the graphene to modulate ion transport through the graphene nanopore. Herein, the graphene/polyethylene terephthalate (G/PET) composite nanochannel was prepared by swift heavy ion irradiation, and gate voltage was applied on it. The results exhibited that the transport of cations (K+, Na+, Li+, Mg2+) can be electrostatically modulated by the applied gate voltage. The G/PET nanochannel imitated the K+ ions biological nanochannel and impedes the transport of divalent ions with K+/ions selectivity up to ∼4.2. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the applied gate voltage can change the electric potential around the graphene nanopore and the surface of the graphene through simulation. Therefore, the changed potential caused the accumulation and depletion of anions and cations near the graphene nanopore and has the ability to modulate cations transport through the graphene nanopore. This work demonstrated that the graphene nanopore with applied gate voltage can effectively modulate ion transport and exhibit significant selectivity of monovalent and divalent cations.

Abstract:Electrokinetic phenomena in nanofluidic system result in many unique properties and applications due to overlap of electrical double layers. As well known, the streaming current is linear proportional to the pressure gradient of a channel. However, in this Letter, we report a non-linear streaming conductance phenomenon in a single nanopore by addition of ionic surfactants in KCl aqueous solution. The streaming conductance decreases at about 0.8 bar applied pressure in high concentrated surfactant solution that was attributed to the slip of surfactant layer, and the slip length was theoretically estimated. Abstract:Nanofluidics has a very promising future owing to its numerous applications in many domains. It remains, however, very difficult to understand the basic physico-chemical principles that control the behavior of solvents confined in nanometric channels. Here, water and ion transport in carbon nanotubes is investigated using classical force field molecular dynamics simulations. By combining one single walled carbon nanotube (uniformly charged or not) with two perforated graphene sheets, we mimic single nanopore devices similar to experimental ones. The graphitic edges delimit two reservoirs of water and ions in the simulation cell from which a voltage is imposed through the application of an external electric field. By analyzing the evolution of the electrolyte conductivity, the role of the carbon nanotube geometric parameters (radius and chirality) and of the functionalization of the carbon nanotube entrances with OH or COO− groups is investigated for different concentrations of group functions.

Abstract:Electrolyte transport in nanochannels plays an important role in a number of emerging areas. Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations, the fundamental transport behavior of an electrolyte/water solution in a confined model nanoenvironment is systematically investigated by varying the nanochannel dimension, solid phase, electrolyte phase, ion concentration and transport rate. It is found that the shear resistance encountered by the nanofluid strongly depends on these material/system parameters; furthermore, several effects are coupled. The mechanisms of the nanofluidic transport characteristics are explained by considering the unique molecular/ion structure formed inside the nanochannel. The lower shear resistance observed in some of the systems studies could be beneficial for nanoconductors, while the higher shear resistance (or higher effective viscosity) observed in other systems might enhance the performance of energy dissipation devices.
