Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the Levy density function as the limit of a generalized Mittag-Leffler density function. The fractional integral equation for the generalized Mittag-Leffler density function is also given. And the role of the Levy structure in the fractional calculus is described. Finally, a transformation is defined.

Abstract:This paper combines probability theory and fractional calculus to derive a novel integral representation of the three-parameter Mittag-Leffler function or Prabhakar function, where the three parameters are combinations of four base parameters. The fundamental concept is the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of the one-sided stable density, conditioned on a scale factor. Integrating with respect to a gamma-distributed scale factor induces a mixture of Riemann-Liouville integrals. A particular combination of four base parameters leads to a representation of the Prabhakar function as a weighted mixture of Riemann-Liouville integrals at different scales. The Prabhakar function constructed in this manner is the Laplace transform of a four-parameter distribution. This general approach gives various known results as special cases (notably, the two-parameter generalised Mittag-Leffler distribution).

Abstract:It is shown that a Mittag-Leffler density has interesting properties. The Mittag-Leffler random variable has a structural representation in terms of a positive Levy variable and the power of a gamma variable where these two variables are independently distributed. It is shown that several central limit-type properties hold but the limiting forms are positive Levy variable rather than a Gaussian variable. A path is constructed from a Mittag-Leffler function to the Mathai pathway model which also provides paths to nonextensive statistics and superstatistics.

Abstract:<p>Mittag‐Leffler functions of one variable play a vital role in several areas of study. Their connections with fractional calculus enable many physical processes, such as diffusion and viscoelasticity, to be efficiently modelled. Here, we consider a Mittag‐Leffler function of two variables and the associated double integral operator, with the goal of establishing once again connections with fractional calculus. By working from the fractional‐calculus viewpoint, it is possible to obtain many new results concerning the double integral operator, including a series formula and a bivariate chain rule. We also discover a left inverse operator, which completes this model of fractional calculus. As applications, we solve some initial value problems and use a modified Stancu‐Bernstein model to approximate the image of a Hölder‐continuous function under the action of our double integral operator.</p>

Abstract:It is noticed that a certain transform of the Mittag-Leffler function Ea is completely monotone for a in [1,2]. Using the explicit expressions of its Bernstein density, an identity in law between suprema of completely asymmetric Levy a-stable processes. In the spectrally positive case, we retrieve the exact expression of a unilateral small deviation constant which had been previously obtained by a different method by Bernyk, Dalang and Peskir.

Abstract:We consider the well-known Mittag-Leffler functions of one, two and three parameters, and establish some new connections between them using fractional calculus. In particular, we express the three-parameter Mittag-Leffler function as a fractional derivative of the two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function, which is in turn a fractional integral of the one-parameter Mittag-Leffler function. Hence, we derive an integral expression for the three-parameter one in terms of the one-parameter one. We discuss the importance and applications of all three Mittag-Leffler functions, with a view to potential applications of our results in making certain types of experimental data much easier to analyse.
Fractional Diffusion Equation for a Power-Law-Truncated Levy Process

Abstract:Truncated Levy flights are stochastic processes which display a crossover from a heavy-tailed Levy behavior to a faster decaying probability distribution function (pdf). Putting less weight on long flights overcomes the divergence of the Levy distribution second moment. We introduce a fractional generalization of the diffusion equation, whose solution defines a process in which a Levy flight of exponent alpha is truncated by a power-law of exponent 5 - alpha. A closed form for the characteristic function of the process is derived. The pdf of the displacement slowly converges to a Gaussian in its central part showing however a power law far tail. Possible applications are discussed.

Abstract:The L-fractional derivative is defined as a certain normalization of the well-known Caputo derivative, so alternative properties hold: smoothness and finite slope at the origin for the solution, velocity units for the vector field, and a differential form associated to the system. We develop a theory of this fractional derivative as follows. We prove a fundamental theorem of calculus. We deal with linear systems of autonomous homogeneous parts, which correspond to Caputo linear equations of non-autonomous homogeneous parts. The associated L-fractional integral operator, which is closely related to the beta function and the beta probability distribution, and the estimates for its norm in the Banach space of continuous functions play a key role in the development. The explicit solution is built by means of Picard's iterations from a Mittag-Leffler-type function that mimics the standard exponential function. In the second part of the paper, we address autonomous linear equations of sequential type. We start with sequential order two and then move to arbitrary order by dealing with a power series. The classical theory of linear ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients is generalized, and we establish an analog of the method of undetermined coefficients. The last part of the paper is concerned with sequential linear equations of analytic coefficients and order two.

Abstract:We derive explicit formulas for the Mellin transform and the distribution of the exponential functional for Levy processes with rational Laplace exponent. This extends recent results by Cai and Kou on the processes with hyper-exponential jumps [N. Cai and S. Kou "Prising Asian options under a general jump diffusion model", (2010)].

Abstract:Abstract Motivated mainly by certain interesting recent extensions of the generalized hypergeometric function [H. M. Srivastava, A. Çetinkaya and I. Onur Kıymaz, A certain generalized Pochhammer symbol and its applications to hypergeometric functions, Appl. Math. Comput. 226 2014, 484–491] by means of the generalized Pochhammer symbol, we introduce here a new extension of the generalized Mittag-Leffler function. We then systematically investigate several properties of the extended Mittag-Leffler function including some basic properties, Mellin, Euler-Beta, Laplace and Whittaker transforms. Furthermore, certain properties of the Riemann–Liouville fractional integrals and derivatives associated with the extended Mittag-Leffler function are also investigated. Some interesting special cases of our main results are pointed out.

Abstract:We define an analogue of the classical Mittag-Leffler function which is applied to two variables, and establish its basic properties. Using a corresponding single-variable function with fractional powers, we define an associated fractional integral operator which has many interesting properties. The motivation for these definitions is twofold: firstly, their link with some fundamental fractional differential equations involving two independent fractional orders, and secondly, the fact that they emerge naturally from certain applications in bioengineering.

Abstract:The influence functional method of Feynman and Vernon is used to obtain a quantum master equation for a Brownian system subjected to a Levy stable random force. The corresponding classical transport equations for the Wigner function are then derived, both in the limit of weak and strong friction. These are fractional extensions of the Klein-Kramers and the Smoluchowski equations. It is shown that the fractional character acquired by the position in the Smoluchowski equation follows from the fractional character of the momentum in the Klein-Kramers equation. Connections among fractional transport equations recently proposed are clarified.

Abstract:A connection between fractional calculus and statistical distribution theory has been established by the authors recently. Some extensions of the results to matrix-variate functions were also considered. In the present article, more results on matrix-variate statistical densities and their connections to fractional calculus will be established. When considering solutions of fractional differential equations, Mittag-Leffler functions and Fox H-function appear naturally. Some results connected with generalized Mittag-Leffler density and their asymptotic behavior will be considered. Reference is made to applications in physics, particularly superstatistics and nonextensive statistical mechanics.

Abstract:In the article we consider the Levy processes and the corresponding semigroups. We represent the generators of these semigroups in convolution forms. Using the obtained convolution form and the theory of integral equations we investigate the properties of a wide class of Levy processes (potential, quasi-potential, the probability of the Levy process remaining within the given domain, long time behavior). We analyze in detail a number of concrete examples of the Levy processes (the stable processes, the variance damped Levy processes, the variance gamma processes, the normal Gaussian process, the Meixner process, the compound Poisson process.)

Abstract:Fractional Levy motion (fLm) is the natural generalization of fractional Brownian motion in the context of self-similar stochastic processes and stable probability distributions. In this paper we give an explicit derivation of the propagator of fLm by using path integral methods. The propagators of Brownian motion and fractional Brownian motion are recovered as particular cases. The fractional diffusion equation corresponding to fLm is also obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a numerical method for the Lévy-Fokker-Planck equation with the fractional diffusive scaling. There are two main challenges. One comes from a two-fold nonlocality, that is, the need to apply the fractional Laplacian operator to a power law decay distribution. The other arises from long-time/small mean-free-path scaling, which introduces stiffness to the equation. To resolve the first difficulty, we use a change of variable to convert the unbounded domain into a bounded one and then apply the Chebyshev polynomial based pseudo-spectral method. To treat the multiple scales, we propose an asymptotic preserving scheme based on a novel micro-macro decomposition that uses the structure of the test function in proving the fractional diffusion limit analytically. Finally, the efficiency and accuracy of our scheme are illustrated by a suite of numerical examples.

Abstract:Abstract The multinomial Mittag-Leffler function plays a crucial role in the study of multi-term time-fractional evolution equations. In this work we establish basic properties of the Prabhakar type generalization of this function with the main emphasis on complete monotonicity. As particular examples, the relaxation functions for equations with multiple time-derivatives in the so-called “natural” and “modified” forms are studied in detail and useful estimates are derived. The obtained results extend known properties of the classical Mittag-Leffler function. The main tools used in this work are Laplace transform and Bernstein functions’ technique.

Abstract:The Klein-Kramers equation describes position and velocity distribution of Langevin dynamics, the diffusion equation and Fokker-Planck equation are its special cases for characterizing position distribution and velocity distribution, respectively. Incorporating the mechanisms of Levy flights into the Klein-Kramers formalism leads to the Levy fractional Klein-Kramers equation, which can effectively describe Levy flights in the presence of an external force field in the phase space. For numerically solving the Levy fractional Klein-Kramers equation, this article presents the explicit and implicit finite difference schemes. The discrete maximum principle is generalized, using this result the detailed stability and convergence analyses of the schemes are given. And the extrapolation and some other possible techniques for improving the convergent rate or making the schemes efficient in more general cases are also discussed. The extensive numerical experiments are performed to confirm the effectiveness of the numerical schemes or simulate the superdiffusion processes. (c) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:In this paper, we stress the importance of the Mittag–Leffler function of two parameters and a single variable in the framework of mathematical physics and applied mathematics. We begin with pseudo hyperbolic and trigonometric functions and progress to introduce an arbitrary order Mittag–Leffler-type function. We study its properties, basic relations, integral representations, pure relations, and differential relations. We then justify the relevance of the arbitrary Mittag–Leffler-type function as a solution to the fractional kinetic equation. Also, we discuss the connection with known families of Mittag-Leffler functions and elementary functions and use operational tools to analyze all associated problems from a unified perspective.

Abstract:We establish a new formula for the fractional derivative with Mittag-Leffler kernel, in the form of a series of Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals, which brings out more clearly the non-locality of fractional derivatives and is easier to handle for certain computational purposes. We also prove existence and uniqueness results for certain families of linear and nonlinear fractional ODEs defined using this fractional derivative. We consider the possibility of a semigroup property for these derivatives, and establish extensions of the product rule and chain rule, with an application to fractional mechanics.
