Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on single-mode-multimode-thin-core-single-mode fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for measuring refractive index and temperature simultaneously. The transmission dips of the sensor will shift when the ambient refractive index and temperature change, so it is possible to measure the refractive index and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the two transmission dips due to different interference orders. The experimental results show that the sensing sensitivities of refractive index and temperature are -18.1764 nm/RIU and 0.0733 nm/RIU within the refractive index range from 1.3105 to 1.3517 and the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C, respectively. Its cost effectiveness, robustness and easy fabrication will have attractive potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:A novel optical fiber sensor based on cascade anti-resonant reflection waveguide (ARRW) and fiber ring-shaped structure (FRSS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature. The sensor is very simply fabricated by splicing ARRW and FRSS based on Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI). The FRSS interference dip is sensitive to external RI and temperature changes, whereas the ARRW structure's loss dip is only sensitive to external temperature. As a result, this sensor can be used to measure both RI and temperature simultaneously. The sensor's maximum RI sensitivity is 108.61 nmRIU and its maximum temperature sensitivity is 19 pm C in the experiment. This sensor is a good choice when it is necessary to measure RI and temperature at the same time due to its compact size, high sensitivity, low cost, and good stability.

Abstract:A solution refractive index (RI) and temperature simultaneous measurement sensor based on three-beam interferometric fiber-optic were demonstrated. The fringe contrast and the wavelength of the interference will vary with the RI and the temperature of the solution, respectively. Experimental results indicate that proposed three-beam interferometric presents a RI sensitivity of 57.24 dB/RIU in the measurement 1.3415-1.4320 RIU and a temperature sensitivity of 10 pm/°C in the range of 30 °C-70 °C. The minimum resolution of RI can be detected is 1.7×10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-4</sup> /RIU.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a novel scheme for simultaneous measurement of temperature and refractive index by using an exposed core microstructured optical fiber (ECF). The ECF allows for high sensitivity to refractive index due to the small exposed-core, while being supported by a standard fiber diameter cladding making it robust compared to optical microfibers. The sensor combines a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed into the core of the ECF and a multimode MachZehnder interferometer (MZI). Both the FBG and MZI are sensitive to refractive index (RI) and temperature through a combination of direct access to the evanescent field via the exposed-core, the thermo-optic effect, and thermal expansion. The FBG and MZI respond differently to changes in temperature and RI, thus allowing for the simultaneous measurement of these parameters. In our experiment, RI sensitivities of 5.85 nmRIU and 794 nmRIU, and temperature sensitivities of 8.72 pmC and 57.9 pmC, were obtained for the FBG and MZI respectively. We demonstrate that a transfer matrix approach can be used to simultaneously measure both parameters, solving the problem of temperature sensitivity of RI sensors due to the high thermo-optic coefficient of aqueous samples.

Abstract:An internal-and-external-cavity Fabry–Pérot interferometer (IECFPI) model was mathematically constructed. Based on the IECFPI configuration, a crosstalk-free fiber optic sensor for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The internal cavity was a silica cavity, while the external one consisted of an open cavity and silica cavity. The open cavity was formed by an offset single-mode fiber (SMF) sandwiched between two sections of SMF, and the silica cavity was formed by a well-cleaved SMF. A sensitivity coefficient (SC) matrix of the proposed sensor was used to determine the RI and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the envelope and fine fringes. The proposed sensor can be used for simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature based on the inverse of the SC matrix. Experimental results demonstrated that the RI sensitivities for the envelope and fine fringes were 1084.9 and 124.2 nm/RIU, respectively. Temperature sensitivities of 3.5 and 9.8 pm/°C were also achieved for the envelope and fine fringes, respectively. The crosstalk between the RI and temperature was thus eliminated. In addition, the proposed sensor has a compact size, simple fabrication, and an all-fiber structure, making it a potential candidate for many applications, such as the food industry and environment monitoring.

Abstract:A novel D-shaped fiber structure combined with a fiber Bragg grating for refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing is proposed and experimentally investigated. Thanks to the etched cladding of D-shaped fiber, the resulting interference is strongly influenced by the surrounding refractive index. By monitoring the dip wavelength of D-shaped fiber structure, the refractive index can be measured. Theoretical analysis and simulations were conducted to investigate the cladding mode propagating behavior influenced by the surrounding RI. Combined with the temperature sensing property of fiber Bragg grating (FBG), the possibility of simultaneously measuring the RI and temperature relies on monitoring the resonance dip of the D-shaped fiber modal interferometer and the Bragg wavelength of the FBG. Experimental results showed that the RI sensitivity of −31.79 nm/RIU within the range of 1.333 ~ 1.428, and a temperature sensitivity of 28.7 pm/°C can be obtained. The proposed sensor with simple configuration, low cost and easy fabrication is suitable for refractive index and temperature sensing applications.

Abstract:The majority of biology and chemistry takes place in solution, in which refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing underlie molecular detection and profiling. All-in-fiber integrated devices are uniquely suited to detecting the properties of samples, which allows liquids to flow and react in the fiber cavities. Here we use a single-hole dual-core fiber (SHDCF) based Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) to simultaneously detect the refractive index and temperature of solution, with high sensitivity enhanced by the vernier effect. The inlets and outlets are built by splicing C-shaped fiber and fiber capillary between SHDCF. A detection region inside the microscopic hole of SHDCF obtained after splicing is constructed. Our method offers high sensitivities of 6851.89 nm/RIU and 0.493 nm/degree celsius for RI and temperature in a liquid solution, respectively. Notably, the crosssensitivity of RI and temperature can be eliminated by constructing a transmission matrix. New in-fiber integrated ways of revealing properties of low-volume samples may have extensive potential for applications in the biological and chemical sciences.

Abstract:We report on multiplexing several Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavities in single-mode optical fibers for highprecision spatially resolved sensing of refractive indices (RI) of liquids. Resonators are fabricated by cutting small slots into fibers using a diamond-blade dicing saw and additional coating with thin Ta 2 O 5 layers to increase cavity reflectance. Temperature compensation of RI measurements is achieved either by evaluating the reflection signals resulting from the solid core parts between different open-cavity sensor elements, or by using a thin Si inlay glued into one of the open cavities. The multiplexing performance and accuracy of the fabricated sensors with up to four open cavities were tested on sucrose solutions over a range of temperatures.

Abstract:Dual parameter detection without cross-sensitivity is a commonly important need but challenging, as most fiber detection components have a single sensitive mechanism. In this article, an optical fiber probe based on a three-beam Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) for temperature and refractive index (RI) measurement was proposed and experimentally realized. Theoretically, such structure has three reflective surfaces, forming three FPIs, and can obtain a hybrid sensing mechanism: wavelength-sensitive to temperature and intensity-sensitive to RI. Experimentally, the chemical etching method was used to form a concave in the fiber tip. Fused together with another section of un-etched fiber, an air bubble can be formed inside the fiber. Then, a cleavage near the bubble can shape the three-beam FPI. Using the fast Fourier Transform, the first-order spatial frequency is corresponding to the air-FPI, and the ratio of the second-order spatial frequency to first-order spatial frequency can describe how many smaller interference periods have been created within one original period due to the cleavage. The test temperature range is 30-40°C with a step of 2°C. The band pass filtering method was used to analyze different frequency components. Experimental results validate that the silica-FP was dominate for temperature sensing, and the average temperature sensitivity was 8.97 pm/°C with repeated linearity over 0.95. The test RI range was 1.3333-1.3908, and average RI sensitivity was 10.05 dB/RIU with repeated linearity over 0.92. Therefore, the proposed structure is a compact and efficient sensing component with hybrid sensitive mechanism that can achieve a temperature-RI dual-parameter measurement.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a dual-channel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on the side-polished D-type optical fiber, which is available for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature. The single mode fiber (SMF) is side-polished to remove the fiber cladding and plated a layer of gold film on the polished surface to excite SPR effect. The RI sensing characters are researched by simulation and experiment. The sensitivity increases from 1543 nm/RIU to 6300 nm/RIU as RI increasing from 1.333 to 1.410. Besides, the resonance wavelength red-shifts about 40 nm as the gold film thickness increasing from 40 nm to 60 nm. Based on the above, we design the temperature compensated RI sensor by modifying the side-polished D-type fiber. One half of the side-polished region is applied for RI sensing and the other half is additionally coated a layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which is high sensitive to temperature variation, for temperature sensing. In addition, the resonance wavelengths of two sensing channels can be controlled by adjusting the film thickness to avoid crosstalk. In the range from 1.333 to 1.390, the RI sensitivity reaches as high as 2260.1 nm/RIU. In the range from 20 °C to 60 °C, the temperature sensitivity reaches as high as −2.41 nm/°C. Finally, by temperature compensation, the RI measurement accuracy can be greatly improved.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensor with a D-single mode fiber (DSMF) cascaded peanut-shaped structure that can measure refractive index (RI) is designed. In this structure, the peanut-shaped is used as an input/output coupler, and the DSMF is used as the sensing area. The sensor characteristics are enhanced by polishing the SMF in the middle. Two peanut-shaped structures are added to the spindle structure, which is more favorable to excite the higher-order cladding modes to generate more modal interference. The deeper the polishing depth, the better the sensitivity. When the polishing depth is 47.1mm with the RI concentration changes from 1.390 to 1.440, the RI sensitivity is 785.53nm/RIU. In addition, the temperature characteristics are studied. In the range of 30°C~80°C, the temperature sensitivity is 0.048nm/°C. This structure is more sensitive to high concentrations RI. This structure has the advantages of small volume, good repeatability, and high sensitivity.

Abstract:An all-fiber sensor based on a cascaded optical fiber device is proposed and demonstrated, and its sensor head is composed of a core-offset Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and a long-period fiber grating (LPFG). In the experiment, two dips shaped by the intermodulation between the interference fringe of MZI and the resonant wavelength of LPFG are monitored. Experimental results show that temperature sensitivities of two dips are 0.060 7 nm/°C and 0.056 3 pm/°C, and the refractive index (RI) sensitivities are −18.025 nm/RIU and −55.06 nm/RIU, respectively. The simultaneous measurement of the temperature and external RI is demonstrated based on the sensitive matrix. Its low fabrication cost, simple configuration and high sensitivity make this sensor have potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:A U-shaped double-side polished plastic optical fiber (POF) is demonstrated as a liquid refractive index (RI) sensor. The refractive index of glycerinum solutions is identified by the intensity detection on the bending and evanescent wave loss change. Heat treatment and mechanical polishing are adopted to form the symmetrical side-polished POF probe. The processing parameters are experimentally optimized on the power transmittance. The sensitivity of 1541%/RIU (Refractive Index Unit) can be obtained with a resolution of 5.35 × 10−4 in the scope of 1.33–1.39. The favorable temperature characteristic is proved to offer stable RI sensing from 20 to 50 °C. This simple POF sensor has potentials in low-cost visible light intensity RI detection.

Abstract:A fiber sensor tip was proposed for measuring temperature and liquid refractive indices (RI). The sensor tip was fabricated by dipping a solidification ultraviolet (SU-8) photoresist onto the end surface of a simple-mode optical fiber. Then the SU-8 photoresist was cured by an ultraviolet source. A Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity was formed on the end faces of the SU-8 and optical fiber, and it showed a perfect FP interference spectrum. The temperature and liquid RI can be independently measured by monitoring the shift and the loss variation of interference peaks. The liquid RI sensitivity is 96.07232 dB/RIU in the RI range of 1.333 to 1.3714, and the temperature sensitivity is 0.38052 nm/degrees C within the temperature range from 25 to 55 degrees C. The cross-sensitivities of temperature and liquid RI can be ignored. The sensor tip can be used in harsh environments, including strong acid, strong alkali, and violent vibration liquids, as cross-linking SU-8 has excellent chemical corrosion resistance capacity and mechanical strength. Abstract:In this work, we report the experimental results on optimizing the optical structure for ambient refractive index measuring with temperature changes monitoring. The presented optical structure is based on a dual-resonance long-period grating embedded inside a fiber loop mirror, where the long-period grating acts as the head of the refractive-index sensor, whereas the section of polarization maintaining fiber in the loop mirror ensures suitable temperature sensing. The optimization process was comprised of tuning the resonance and interferometric peaks by changing the state of polarization of propagating beams. Experimental results establish that the response of the proposed sensor structure is linear and goes in opposite directions: an increase in the ambient refractive index reduces the signal response, whereas a temperature increase produces an increased response. This enables us to distinguish between the signals from changes in the refractive index and temperature. Due to the filtering properties of the interferometric structure, it is possible to monitor variation in these physical parameters by observing optical power changes instead of wavelength shifts. Hence, the refractive index sensitivity has been established up to 2375.8 dB/RIU in the narrow RI range (1.333–1.341 RIU) and temperature sensitivities up to 1.1 dBm/°C in the range of 23–41 °C. The proposed sensor is dedicated to advanced chemical and biological sensor applications.

Abstract:A sensor on the basis of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of hollow core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) with an alternating distribution of cladding tubes is proposed to realize concurrent detection of refractive index (RI) and the temperature. Two cladding tubes are plated with gold wire and silver layer inside, respectively. The liquid analyte is packed into the core of the fiber, and the silver layer is filled with liquid toluene which has a negative thermo-optical factor, thus forming a two-parameter detection channel for the RI and the temperature. The sensitivity crossover is resolved by using a dual wavelength matrix method. The outcome indicates that the optimum sensitivity of RI detection from 1.4850 to 1.5550 is up to − 55,000 nm/RIU, and the optimum sensitivity of temperature detection between − 20.0 and 40.0°C is up to − 85 nm/°C. The figure of merit (FOM) of 625 RIU −1 can be achieved with RI of 1.5000 and the temperature of 20.0°C. Comparison with other reported sensors demonstrates that our sensor has novel and simple fiber structure, ultrahigh sensitivity, and broad measurement range, which has an extensive prospect of application in dual-parameter detection that provide solid support for sensing area.

Abstract:A miniature fiber sensor tip with both high refractive index (RI) and temperature sensitivities was proposed for measuring the temperature and liquid RI simultaneously. A two-photon polymerization technique was used to fabricate a Pi-shaped polymer micro-structure on the end-face of an optical fiber. A three-wave Fabry-Perot interferometer was formed. The size of the proposed FPI can be precisely controlled and the total height is less than 30 mu m. Temperature and RI variations can be detected simultaneously using the sensitivity matrix method. The sensor tip can be used in harsh environments, as cross-linking SU-8 has moderate acid and alkali resistance and good mechanical strength.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a simple fiber sensor for simultaneous measurement of liquid refractive-index (RI) and temperature. Design/methodology/approach The sensor structure is formed by a long period fiber grating cascaded with a section of thin-core fiber. The long period fiber grating is fabricated on single mode fiber, followed by a section of 20-mm length thin-core fiber which is a modal interferometer. Findings Cladding mode interference between long period fiber grating and thin-core fiber modal interferometer is weak in the experimental investigation. Both of these two cladding mode type fiber devices are sensitive to surrounding RI and temperature. So the RI and temperature can be measured simultaneously by monitoring the spectral characteristics of the compound sensor. The sensitivity is calibrated and sensor matrix is provided in the experiment. Originality/value This proposed fiber sensor is simple, tough, cost-effective and suitable for discriminate the liquid RI and temperature with high sensitivity.

The theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the ambient liquid RI and temperature can be simultaneously determined by the intensity and shift of the resonant wavelength in the reflection spectrum. Our proposed device has the highest RI sensitivity of ~216.37 dB/RIU at the RI value of 1.30; a high spatial resolution owing to its compact size (with dimension <400 μm) makes it promising for high precision bio/chemical sensing applications.

Abstract:A single-optic-fiber sensor is proposed to simultaneously detect the refractive index (RI) and temperature (T) at a single wavelength band. This sensor is based on the mixed effects of Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR), where MZI is excited by a tapered-fiber structure, and SPR is stimulated by a 45 nm gold film on the tapered-fiber surface. The detection signal of an SPR spectrum superimposed on interference stripes was obtained. After fast Fourier transform and filter processing, the MZI and SPR signals were separated. Experimental results indicate that our sensor can improve the RI sensitivity to 2021.07 nm/RIU (21-fold greater than that of the original tapered-fiber MZI sensor) and detect T simultaneously. Additionally, this highly integrated sensor simplifies the detection system, with potential applications in portable biochemical sensing. (C) 2021 Optica Publishing Group
