Abstract:Neisseria gonorrhoeae , a gram-negative bacterial mucosal pathogen, is the causative agent for the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea. The most common clinical manifestations comprise infections of the anogenital tract, such as urethritis, cervicitis, and proctitis. Local extension of infection results in pelvic inflammatory disease, tubo-ovarian abscess, and epididymo-orchitis. 1 Extragenital gonococcal disease may arise either from direct inoculation of other mucosal sites such as the conjunctiva and pharynx or from bacteremia producing the hallmark arthritis-dermatitis syndrome characterized by polyarthralgias associated with pustular skin lesions. 1 We describe a patient presenting with a thyroglossal duct cyst abscess due to N. gonorrhoeae , an uncommon complication of pharyngeal gonococcal infection.
