Abstract:Bimetallic motifs are a structural feature common to some of the most effective and synthetically useful catalysts known, including in the active sites of many metalloenzymes and on the surfaces of industrially relevant heterogeneous materials. However, the complexity of these systems often hampers detailed studies of their fundamental properties. To glean valuable mechanistic insight into how these catalysts function, this research group has prepared a family of dinucleating 1,8-naphthyridine ligands that bind two first-row transition metals in close proximity, originally designed to help mimic the proposed active site of metal oxide surfaces. Of the various bimetallic combinations examined, dicopper(I) is particularly versatile, as neutral bridging ligands adopt a variety of different binding modes depending on the configuration of frontier orbitals available to interact with the Cu centers. Organodicopper complexes are readily accessible, either through the traditional route of salt metathesis or via the activation of tetraarylborate anions through aryl group abstraction by a dicopper(I) unit. The resulting bridging aryl complexes engage in C-H bond activations, notably with terminal alkynes to afford bridging alkynyl species. The μ-hydrocarbyl complexes are surprisingly tolerant of water and elevated temperatures. This stability was leveraged to isolate a species that typically represents a fleeting intermediate in Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne coupling (CuAAC); reaction of a bridging alkynyl complex with an organic azide afforded the first example of a well-defined, symmetrically bridged dicopper triazolide. This complex was shown to be an intermediate during CuAAC, providing support for a proposed bimetallic mechanism. These platforms are not limited to formally low oxidation states; chemical oxidation of the hydrocarbyl complexes cleanly results in formation of mixed valence CuICuII complexes with varying degrees of distortion in both the bridging moiety and the dicopper core. Higher oxidation states, e.g., dicopper(II), are easily accessed via oxidation of a dicopper(I) compound with air to give a CuII2(μ-OH)2 complex. Reduction of this compound with silanes resulted in the unexpected formation of pentametallic copper(I) dihydride clusters or trimetallic monohydride complexes, depending on the nature of the silane. Finally, development of an unsymmetrical naphthyridine ligand with mixed donor side-arms enables selective synthesis of an isostructural series of six heterobimetallic complexes, demonstrating the power of ligand design in the preparation of heterometallic assemblies.

Abstract:Complexes featuring multiple metal centres are of growing interest regarding metal-metal cooperation and its tuneability. Here the synthesis and characterisation of heterobimetallic complexes of a 3d metal (3: Mn, 4: Co) and lanthanum supported by a (1,1,1-tris[(3-methoxysalicylideneamino)methyl]ethane) ligand is reported, as well as discussion of their electronic strucure via EPR spectroscopy, electrochemical experiments and computational studies. Competitive binding experiments of the ligand and various metal salts unequivocally demonstrate that in these heterobimetallic complexes the 3d metal (Mn, Co) selectively occupies the κ6-N3O3 binding site of the ligand, whilst La occupies the κ6-O6 metal binding site in line with its relative oxophilicity. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy supported by density functional theory analysis indicates that the 3d metal is high spin in both cases (S = 5/2 (Mn), 3/2 (Co)). Cyclic voltammetry studies on the Mn/La and Co/La bimetallic complexes revealed a quasi-reversible Mn2+/3+ redox process and poorly-defined irreverisble oxidation events respectively.

Abstract:For a long time, the small group of cationic ligands stood out as obscure systems within the general landscape of coordinative chemistry. However, this situation has started to change rapidly during the last decade, with more and more examples of metal-coordinated cationic species being reported. The growing interest in these systems is not only of purely academic nature, but also driven by accumulating evidence of their high catalytic utility. Overcoming the inherently poor coordinating ability of cationic species often required additional structural stabilization. In numerous cases this was realized by functionalizing them with a pair of chelating side-arms, effectively constructing a pincer-type scaffold. This comprehensive review aims to encompass all cationic ligands possessing such pincer architecture reported to date. Herein every cationic species that has ever been embedded in a pincer framework is described in terms of its electronic structure, followed by an in-depth discussion of its donor/acceptor properties, based on computational studies (DFT) and available experimental data (IR, NMR or CV). We then elaborate on how the positive charge of these ligands affects the spectroscopic and redox properties, as well as the reactivity, of their complexes, compared to those of the structurally related neutral ligands. Among other systems discussed, this review also surveys our own contribution to this field, namely, the introduction of sulfonium-based pincer ligands and their complexes, recently reported by our group.

Abstract:The anionic monocarborane alkyne [12-(HC?C)-CB11H11](-) was employed as a ligand towards Cu(i) to form terminal alkyne complexes. Spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography allowed for a detailed structural analysis of complexes with nitrogen ligands, which are the first examples featuring carborane-C?CH -> metal pi coordination. Addition of phosphines to compound 2 afforded homoleptic Cu(i) complexes [Cu(PR3)(n)](+) (4), in which case the carborane becomes a non-coordinating anion. Polymeric acetylide 5 was obtained in almost quantitative yield from 2 and proved to be a suitable precursor to heterobimetallic Cu(i)/M(ii) (M = Pd, Pt) alkynide complexes with side-on and end-on coordination to the metal centers.

Abstract:The bidentate phosphine bis(diphenylphosphino)-N-phenyl-maleimide (L1) is used to synthesize a series of complexes from coinage metals and palladium. Some of them are mononuclear species where one metal atom is coordinated by two phosphine ligands. Three of these complexes have been investigated in detail because they contain the initial ligand in an anionic, radical form (L1') i.e. [Cu(L1L1')] (1), [Ag(L1L1')] (7), [Pd(L1')2] (11). L1' in 1, 7 and 11 shows significant differences in its bonding parameters compared to free or coordinating L1. By magnetic measurements the radical nature of these three compounds could be verified. Quantum chemical calculations prove the existence of either one (1 and 7) or two (11) unpaired electrons localized on the ligand. Furthermore these calculations can explain that 1 and 7 show an asymmetric structure in solid state where one can clearly differ L1 from L1'.

Abstract:The electron withdrawing and oxidatively stable perfluorinated Cp* ligand [C 5 (CF 3 ) 5 ] − allowed for the isolation of rare and unusually stable coinage metal complexes [M(C 5 (CF 3 ) 5 )(P t Bu 3 )] (M = Cu, Ag, Au), representing the first complete and structurally comparable series of group 11 Cp coordination compounds. Full characterization and structure analysis revealed distinct and partly unknown coordination motifs with hapticities ranging from η 1 , η 3 /η 1 and η 3 /η 2 for gold, silver and copper, respectively. Quantum-chemical studies using DFT methods confirm these findings and connect them to the unique electronic structure of the given ligand system.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reactions of an ethynylferrocene complex, [eta(6)-phenylethynyl]tricarbonyl chromium and [eta(5)(1-5)-1-ethynyl-4-methoxycyclohexa-2,4-diellyl]tricarbonyl manganese with a 2-iodobenzodithiophene derivative lead to the formation of mononuclear complexes. Similarly, condensation of the iodo derivative of one of these complexes with the [eta(6)-phenylethynyl]tricarbonyl chromium and [eta(5)(1-5)-1-ethynyl-4-methoxycyclohexa-2,4-dienyl]tricarbonyl manganese complexes affords bimetallic iron-chromium and iron-manganese complexes. Upon hydride abstraction, the manganese derivatives give the corresponding (eta(6)-arene) cations. The structure of the neutral bimetallic iron-manganese complex has been investigated by X-ray diffraction study.
Synthesis and Electrochemical Studies of Nickel Complexes with a Flexidentate Bipyridine-aza-crown Ether Ligand

Abstract:Bipyridine ligands have been extensively employed in nickel catalysis, with ligand modifications focused on steric or electronic tuning. In this work, we explore modifications designed to modulate the coordination mode using a 2,2'-bipyridine derivative with an appended aza-crown ether macrocycle capable of flexidentate binding to nickel. A series of complexes varying in charge from neutral to dicationic demonstrates the flexibility of the macrocycle, with bipyridine-aza-crown ether denticity changing from к4 to к6 upon sequential abstraction of chloride ligands. The changes in binding mode can be reversed by addition of chloride ion. Comparisons between the macrocycle-containing ligand and an analogous ligand with a non-macrocyclic diethylamine donor provide insight into the role of the crown ether, including in electrochemical reductions probed via cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract:The syntheses of new linear π-conjugated building blocks, ruthenium(II) alkynyl-hydride and bis(σ-pyridylacetylide) complexes, and their application to the formation of heterobimetallic units and oligomers incorporating metal–metal-bonded complexes are reported. The structure of a tetrametallic subunit has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Thermogravimetry shows a stabilization of the tetramer and the oligomers in comparison to the least stable starting material. Spectroscopic results and cyclovoltammetry indicate an N–M donor–acceptor interaction, but no extended electron delocalization along the backbone of the tetramer.
Coinage Metal Complexes of a Sterically Encumbered Anionic Pyridylborate

Abstract:Sterically loaded, anionic pyridine has been synthesized and utilized successfully in the stabilization of a homoleptic series of coinage metal complexes. The treatment of [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]K (Trip =2,4,6‐iPr3C6H2) with CuBr(PPh3), AgCl(PPh3) or AuCl(PPh3) (Py = pyridine) afforded the corresponding [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]M(PPh3) (M = Au, Ag, Cu) complexes, via salt metathesis, as isolable, crystalline solids. Notably, these reactions avoid the facile single electron transfer chemistry reported with the less bulky ligand systems. The X‐ray structures revealed that they are two‐coordinate metal adducts. The M‐N and M‐P bond distances are longest in the silver and shortest in the copper adduct among the three group 11 family members. Computational analysis revealed an interesting stability dependence on steric bulk of the anionic pyridine (i.e., pyridyl borate) ligand. A comparison of structures and bonding of [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]Au(PPh3) to pyridine and m‐terphenyl complexes, {[2,6‐Trip2Py]Au(PPh3)}[SbF6] and [2,6‐Trip2Ph]Au(PPh3) are also provided. The Au(I) isocyanide complex, [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]Au(CNBut) has been stabilized using the same anionic pyridylborate illustrating that it can support other gold‐ligand moieties as well.

Abstract:A diprotic bis(β-thioketoimine) ligand featuring a flexible 4,4’-methylbis(aniline) linker, H22, was synthesised via treatment of the corresponding bis(β-ketoimine) with Lawesson’s reagent. Utilising a bulky mononucleating β-thioketoiminate ligand, [3]–, the analogous series of heteroleptic monometallic complexes, [M(3)2] (M = Fe, Co and Zn), were prepared and characterised by spectroscopic, analytical and X-ray diffraction techniques. A comprehensive DFT study of all complexes reveals a stronger M–S bonding compared to M–N due to a higher degree of covalency. Solution magnetic studies and Natural Bonding Orbital calculations are consistent with high-spin tetrahedral Fe(II) and Co(II) centres, and cyclic voltammetry reveals both oxidation and reduction processes are accessible.

Abstract:Mono- and polynuclear complexes containing 3-(1,10-phenanthrolin-2-yl)-1-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-imidazolylidene (L), [NiL2](PF6)(2) (2), [CoL2](PF6)(3) (3), [PtLCl](PF6) (4), [PdAgL2](PF6)(3) (5), [PdCuL2](PF6)(3) (6), [Pd2L2Cl2](PF6)(2) (7), and [Pd3L2Cl4](PF6)(2) (8)have been prepared and fully characterized by NMR, ESI-MS spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. In complexes 2-4, the ligand binds to metals in a pincer NNC fashion with the pyridine group uncoordinated. Complexes 5 and 6 are isostructural to each other in which the palladium ions are surrounded by two pyridines and two imidazolylidenes and Ag(I)or Cu(I)is coordinated by two 1,10-phenanthroline moieties. In the trinuclear palladium complex 8, one palladium ion has an identical coordination mode as in 5 and 6, and the other two palladium ions are bonded to the 1,10-phenanthroline. Complex 6 exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the tandem click/Sonogashira reaction of 1-(bromomethyl)-4-iodobenzene, NaN3, and ethynylbenzene in which three C-N bonds and one C-C bond are formed in a single flask.

Abstract:Controlled formation of mixed-metal bimetallics was achieved via two derivatised 1,10-phenanthroline ligands bearing an imino- or amino-phosphine appendage at the 5-position. Selective coordination of the phen group to the [Re(CO)3Cl] core was achieved enabling precise construction of bimetallic complexes with a second rhenium centre or with gold. The mixed Ru/Au complex was similarly obtained with the imino-phosphine but access to the heterobimetallic iridium systems required prior formation of the P-bound gold complexes subsequent to the introduction of the [Ir(Ppy)2]+ fragment. The Re/Pd, Re/Pt, Ir/Pd and Ir/Pt compounds were prepared from the combination of κ-N'',P-Pd(Pt)Cl2 and the appropriate rhenium or iridium precursors. Spectroscopic and theoretical analyses have been employed to investigate the structural and electronic impact of the second metal.

Abstract:Acetelyenediide (C-2(2-)) species have been encapsulated in bimetallic and trimetallic clusters: [(AuL)(6)Ag-7(C equivalent to C)(3)](BF4)(7) (2) and [(AuL)(6)AgCu6(C equivalent to C)(3)](BF4)(7) (3), L=phenylbis(2-pyridyl)phosphine (PPhpy(2)). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that they are isostructural and six silver atoms in 2 are replaced with copper in 3. Both clusters have a trefoil skeleton, which can be viewed as three trigonal bipyramidal (LAu-C equivalent to C-AuL)M2Ag (M=Ag/Cu) motifs sharing a common silver atom. TDDFT calculations showed Cu-doping significantly increases the energy level of (C-2-Cu)-involved occupied orbital, thus inducing interesting transition coupling of dual-emission at low temperature. This work not only provides a strategy for constructing heterometallic clusters, but also shows the prospect for pursuing novel thermochromic luminescent materials by incorporating multi-congeneric metal components.

Abstract:ConspectusLow-valent, low-coordinate 3d metal complexes represent a class of extraordinarily reactive compounds that can act as reagents and catalysts for challenging bond-activation reactions. The pursuit of these electron-deficient metal complexes in low oxidation states demands ancillary ligands capable of providing not only energetic stabilization but also sufficiently high steric bulk at the metal center. From this perspective, pincer ligands are particularly advantageous, as their prearranged, meridional coordination mode scaffolds the active center while the substituents of the peripheral donor atoms provide effective steric shielding for the coordination sphere. In a T-shaped geometry, the transition metal complexes possess a precisely defined vacant coordination site, which, combined with the often observed high-spin electron configuration, exhibits unusually high selectivity of these compounds with respect to one-electron redox chemistry. In light of the intractable reaction pathways typically observed with related electronically unsaturated 3d transition metal complexes, the pincer coordination mode enables the isolation of low-valent compounds with more controlled and unique reactivity. We have thus investigated a series of T-shaped metal(I) complexes using three different types of pincer ligands, which may be regarded as "metalloradicals" due to their selectively exposed unpaired electrons.These compounds display remarkably high thermal stability and represent rarely observed "naked" monovalent metal species featuring both monomeric and dimeric structures. Extensive reactivity studies using various organic substrates highlight a strong tendency of these paramagnetic compounds to undergo one-electron oxidation, leading to the isolation of a plethora of metal(II) species with reduced organic ligands as unusual structural elements. The exploration of C2 symmetric T-shaped Ni(I) complexes as asymmetric catalysts also shows success in enantioselective hydrodehalogenation of geminal dihalogenides. In addition, this specific class of low-valent, low-coordinate complexes can be further diversified by introducing redox-active pincer ligands or building homobimetallic systems with two T-shaped units.This Account focuses on the discussion of selected examples of iron, cobalt, and nickel pincer complexes bearing a [P,N,P] or [N,N,N] donor set; however, their electronic structure and radical-type reactivity can be broadly extended to other pincer systems. The availability of various types of pincer ligands should allow fine-tuning of the reactivity of the T-shaped complexes. Given the unprecedented reactivity observed with these compounds, we expect the studies of T-shaped 3d metal complexes to be a fertile field for advancing base metal catalysis.

Twinned versus Linked Organometallics - Bimetallic "Half-Baguette" Pentalenide Complexes of Rh(I)

Abstract:The application of Mg[Ph4Pn] and Li·K[Ph4Pn] in transmetalation reactions to a range of Rh(I) precursors led to the formation of "half-baguette" anti-[RhI(L)n]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] (L = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, norbornadiene, ethylene; n = 1, 2) and syn-[RhI(CO)2]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] complexes as well as the related iridium complex anti-[IrI(COD)]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn]. With CO exclusive syn metallation was obtained even when using mono-nuclear Rh(I) precursors, indicating an electronic preference for syn metalation. DFT analysis showed this to be the result of π overlap between the adjacent M(CO)2 units which overcompensates for dz2 repulsion of the metals, an effect which can be overridden by steric clash of the auxiliary ligands to yield anti-configuration as seen in the larger olefin complexes. syn-[RhI(CO)2]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] is a rare example of a twinned organometallic where the two metals are held flexibly in close proximity, but the two d8 Rh(I) centres did not show signs of M-M bonding interactions or exhibit Lewis basic behaviour as in some related mono-nuclear Cp complexes due to the acceptor properties of the ligands. The ligand substitution chemistry of syn-[RhI(CO)2]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] was investigated with a series of electronically and sterically diverse donor ligands (P(OPh)3, P(OMe)3, PPh3, PMe3, dppe) yielding new mono- and bis-substituted complexes, with E-syn-[RhI(CO)(P{OR}3]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] (R = Me, Ph) characterised by XRD.
