Abstract:The ground entanglement and thermal entanglement in quantum mixed spin chains consisting of two integer spins 1 and two half integer spins 1/2 arrayed as ${1/2}-{1/2}-1-1$ in a unit cell with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings $J_1$($J_2$) between the spins of equal (different) magnitudes, are investigated by adopting the log-negativity. The ground entanglement transition found here is closely related with the valence bond state transition, and the thermal entanglement near the critical point is calculated and shown that two distinct behaviors exist in the nearest neighbor same kind of spins and different kind of spins, respectively. The potential application of our results on the quantum information processing is also discussed.

Abstract:We study quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic chains with dilute random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds with the modified spin-wave theory. By describing thermal excitations in the language of spin waves, we observe a low-temperature Curie susceptibility due to the formation of large spin clusters first predicted by the real-space renormalization-group approach, as well as a crossover to a pure ferromagnetic spin-chain behavior at intermediate and high temperatures. We compare our results of the modified spin-wave theory to quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of a one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic system with random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds. In the dilute impurity limit, we generalize the modified spin-wave theory for random spin chains, where local chemical potentials for spin waves in ferromagnetic spin segments are introduced to ensure zero magnetization at finite temperature. This approach successfully describes the crossover from the behavior of a pure one-dimensional ferromagnet at high temperatures to a distinct Curie behavior due to randomness at low temperatures. We discuss the effects of impurity bond strength and concentration on the crossover and low-temperature behavior.

Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of an XYZ Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which describes the low-energy behaviors of a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosonic model in the deep insulating region. The entropy and the specific heat are calculated numerically by the quasi-exact transfer-matrix renormalization group. In particular, in the limit $U^\prime/U\rightarrow\infty$, our model is exactly solvable and thus serves as a benchmark for our numerical method. From our data, we find that for $U^\prime/U>1$ a quantum phase transition between an (anti)ferromagnetic phase and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase occurs at a finite $\theta$, while for $U^\prime/U<1$ a transition between a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase happens at $\theta=0$. A refined ground-state phase diagram is then deduced from their low-temperature behaviors. Our findings provide an alternative way to detect those distinguishable phases experimentally.

Abstract:We investigate entanglement properties in dimerized and frustrated spin-one models by applying the concept of negativity. On the basis of the relation between negativity and correlators, negativities are numerically calculated. We study the effects of dimerization and frustration on entanglement. We also consider the case of finite temperature, and determine the threshold temperature before which the thermal state is doomed to be entangled.

Abstract:Combining high-temperature expansions with the recursion method and quantum Monte Carlo simulations with the maximum entropy method, we study the dynamics of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain at temperatures above and below the coupling J. By comparing the two sets of calculations, their relative strengths are assessed. At high temperatures, we find that there is a low-frequency peak in the momentum integrated dynamic structure factor, due to diffusive long-wavelength modes. This peak is rapidly suppressed as the temperature is lowered below J. Calculation of the complete dynamic structure factor S(k,w) shows how the spectral features associated with the two-spinon continuum develop at low temperatures. We extract the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 from the w-->0 limit, and compare with recent experimental results for Sr2CuO3 and CuGeO3. We also discuss the scaling behavior of the dynamic susceptibility, and of the static structure factor S(k) and the static susceptibility X(k). We confirm the asymptotic low-temperature forms S(pi)~[ln(T)]^(3/2) and X(pi)~T^(-1)[ln(T)]^(1/2), expected from previous theoretical studies.

Abstract:We present a method which combines a thermal coherent state approach with a self-consistent quantum theory to investigate the spin-1/2 dimerized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. It is found that both excitation gaps between the ground state and two lowest excited modes, the triplet one-magnon excitation and the singlet twomagnon bound state decrease monotonically with increasing temperature. Our results are consistent with those obtained from the other approximations.

Abstract:We apply the rotation-invariant Green's function method to study the finite-temperature properties of a $S{=}1/2$ sawtooth-chain (also called $\Delta$-chain) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model at the fully frustrated point when the exchange couplings along the straight-line and zig-zag paths are equal. We also use 13 terms of high-temperature expansion series and interpolation methods to get thermodynamic quantities for this model. We check the obtained predictions for observable quantities by comparison with numerics for finite systems. Although our work refers to a one-dimensional case, the utilized methods work in higher dimensions too and are applicable for examining other frustrated quantum spin lattice systems at finite temperatures.

Gapless spin excitations in nanographene-based antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains

Abstract:Haldane's seminal work established two fundamentally different types of excitation spectra for antiferromagnetic Heisenberg quantum spin chains: gapped excitations in integer-spin chains and gapless excitations in half-integer-spin chains. In finite-length half-integer spin chains, quantization, however, induces a gap in the excitation spectrum, with the upper bound given by the Lieb-Schulz-Mattis (LSM) theorem. Here, we investigate the length-dependent excitations in spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains obtained by covalently linking olympicenes--Olympic rings shaped nanographenes carrying spin-1/2--into one-dimensional chains. The large exchange interaction (J~38 mV) between olympicenes and the negligible magnetic anisotropy in these nanographenes make them an ideal platform for studying quantum spin excitations, which we directly measure using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy. We observe a power-law decay of the lowest excitation energy with increasing chain length L, remaining below the LSM boundary. In a long chain with L = 50, a nearly V-shaped excitation continuum is observed, reinforcing the system's gapless nature in the thermodynamic limit. Finally, we visualize the standing wave of a single spinon confined in odd-numbered chains using low-bias current maps. Our results provide compelling evidence for the realization of a one-dimensional analog of a gapless spin liquid.

Bound-state confinement after trap-expansion dynamics in integrable systems

Abstract:Integrable systems possess stable families of quasiparticles, which are composite objects (bound states) of elementary excitations. Motivated by recent quantum computer experiments, we investigate bound-state transport in the spin-$1/2$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain ($XXZ$ chain). Specifically, we consider the sudden vacuum expansion of a finite region $A$ prepared in a non-equilibrium state. In the hydrodynamic regime, if interactions are strong enough, bound states remain confined in the initial region. Bound-state confinement persists until the density of unbound excitations remains finite in the bulk of $A$. Since region $A$ is finite, at asymptotically long times bound states are "liberated" after the "evaporation" of all the unbound excitations. Fingerprints of confinement are visible in the space-time profiles of local spin-projection operators. To be specific, here we focus on the expansion of the $p$-Néel states, which are obtained by repetition of a unit cell with $p$ up spins followed by $p$ down spins. Upon increasing $p$, the bound-state content is enhanced. In the limit $p\to\infty$ one obtains the domain-wall initial state. We show that for $p<4$, only bound states with $n>p$ are confined at large chain anisotropy. For $p\gtrsim 4$, also bound states with $n=p$ are confined, consistent with the absence of transport in the limit $p\to\infty$. The scenario of bound-state confinement leads to a hierarchy of timescales at which bound states of different sizes are liberated, which is also reflected in the dynamics of the von Neumann entropy.

Abstract:Spin transport properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin systems for both $S=1/2$ and S=1 are studied by applying twisted boundary magnetic field. The spin current displays significantly different behavior of the spin transport properties between $S=1/2$ and S=1 cases. For the spin-half case, a London equation for the current and the detection of an alternating electric field are proposed for the linear response regime. The correlation functions reveal the spiral nature of spin configuration for both ground state and the spinon excitations. For the spin-one chain otherwise, a kink is generated in the ground state for the size is larger than the correlation length, leading to an exponential dependence of spin current with respect to the chains length. The midgap state emerges from the degenerate ground state even for small boundary fields.

Abstract:We study the 1D quantum Heisenberg chain with randomly ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic couplings (a model previously studied by approximate strong-disorder RG). We find that, at least for sufficiently large spin $S$, the ground state has ``spin glass'' order. The spin waves on top of this state have the dynamical exponent ${z=3/2}$, intermediate between the values $z=1$ of the antiferromagnet and ${z=2}$ of the ferromagnet. DMRG simulations are in good agreement with the analytical results for spins ${S=1}$ and ${S=3/2}$. The case ${S=1/2}$ shows large finite size effects: we suggest that this case is also ordered, but with a small ordered moment.

Topological Phases in Half-Integer Higher Spin $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg Chains

Abstract:We study the ground state properties of antiferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ chains with half-integer spins ranging from $S=\frac{3}{2}$ to $S=\frac{11}{2}$ using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We map out the ground-state phase diagrams as a function of $\frac{J_2}{J_1}$ containing topological phases with alternating $\frac{2S-1}{2}$ and $\frac{2S+1}{2}$ valence bonds. We identify these topological phases and their boundaries by calculating the string order parameter, the dimer order parameter, and the spin gap for those high-$S$ systems in thermodynamic limit (finite size scaling). We find that these topological regions narrow down inversely with $S$ and converge to a single point at $\frac{J_2}{J_1}=\frac{1}{4}$ in the classical limit -- a critical threshold between commensurate and incommensurate orders. In addition, we extend the discussion of the Majumder-Ghosh state, previously noted only for $S=\frac{1}{2}$, and speculate its possible presence as a ground state in half-integer high spin systems over a substantial range of $\frac{J_2}{J_1}$ values.

Scaling of diffusion constants in perturbed easy-axis Heisenberg spin chains

Abstract:Understanding the physics of the integrable spin-1/2 XXZ chain has witnessed substantial progress, due to the development and application of sophisticated analytical and numerical techniques. In particular, infinite-temperature magnetization transport has turned out to range from ballistic, over superdiffusive, to diffusive behavior in different parameter regimes of the anisotropy. Since integrability is rather the exception than the rule, a crucial question is the change of transport under integrability-breaking perturbations. This question includes the stability of superdiffusion at the isotropic point and the change of diffusion constants in the easy-axis regime. In our work, we study this change of diffusion constants by a variety of methods and cover both, linear response theory in the closed system and the Lindblad equation in the open system, where we throughout focus on periodic boundary conditions. In the closed system, we compare results from the recursion method to calculations for finite systems and find evidence for a continuous change of diffusion constants over the full range of perturbation strengths. In the open system weakly coupled to baths, we find diffusion constants in quantitative agreement with the ones in the closed system in a range of nonweak perturbations, but disagreement in the limit of weak perturbations. Using a simple model in this limit, we point out the possibility of a diverging diffusion constant in such an open system.

The spin-wave spectrum on a Néel-ordered ground state is bounded as ε ( k )≤ c ∣ k ∣, where c gives an upper bound for the spin-wave velocity. Edge modes and boundary impurities in the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain

Abstract:We present a comprehensive analysis of boundary phenomena in a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain (XXZ-$\frac{1}{2}$) in the gapped antiferromagnetic phase, with a particular focus on the interplay between fractionalized spin-$\frac{1}{4} $ edge modes and a coupled spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity at the edge. Employing a combination of Bethe Ansatz, exact diagonalization, and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods, we explore the intricate phase diagram that emerges when the impurity is coupled either integrably or non-integrably to the chain. For integrable antiferromagnetic impurity couplings, we identify two distinct phases: the Kondo phase, where the impurity is screened by a multiparticle Kondo effect, and the antiferromagnetic bound mode phase, where an exponentially localized bound state screens the impurity in the ground state. When coupled ferromagnetically while maintaining integrability, the impurity behaves as a free spin-$\frac{1}{2}$, leading to either a ferromagnetic bound mode phase, where the impurity remains free in the ground state but may be screened at higher energy excitations or an unscreened (or local moment) phase where impurity remains unscreened in every eigenstate whereas for non-integrable ferromagnetic coupling, the impurity is not free. In the case of non-integrable antiferromagnetic coupling, a third phase emerges, characterized by mid-gap excitations with two degenerate states below the mass gap on top of the Kondo and antiferromagnetic bound mode phases, further enriching the phase diagram. Our findings highlight the nuanced behavior of boundary impurities in gapped antiferromagnetic systems, offering new insights into Kondo effects and impurity screening in the presence of fractionalized edge modes and bulk antiferromagnetic order.

Spin chain on a metallic surface: Dissipation-induced order vs. Kondo entanglement

Abstract:We explore the physics of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with Kondo interaction, $J_k$, to a two-dimensional electron gas. At weak $J_k$ the problem maps onto a Heisenberg chain locally coupled to a dissipative Ohmic bath. At the decoupled fixed point, the dissipation is a marginally relevant perturbation and drives long-range antiferromagnetic order along the chain. In the dynamical spin structure factor we observe a quadratic low-energy dispersion akin to Landau-damped Goldstone modes. At large $J_k$ Kondo screening dominates, and the spin correlations of the chain inherit the power law of the host metal, akin to a paramagnetic heavy Fermi liquid. In both phases we observe heavy bands near the Fermi energy in the composite-fermion spectral function. Our results, obtained from auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations, provide a unique negative-sign-free realization of a quantum transition between an antiferromagnetic metal and a heavy-fermion metal. We discuss the relevance of our results in the context of scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments of magnetic adatom chains on metallic surfaces.

Abstract:Understanding universal aspects of quantum dynamics is an unresolved problem in statistical mechanics. In particular, the spin dynamics of the 1D Heisenberg model were conjectured to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class based on the scaling of the infinite-temperature spin-spin correlation function. In a chain of 46 superconducting qubits, we study the probability distribution, $P(\mathcal{M})$, of the magnetization transferred across the chain's center. The first two moments of $P(\mathcal{M})$ show superdiffusive behavior, a hallmark of KPZ universality. However, the third and fourth moments rule out the KPZ conjecture and allow for evaluating other theories. Our results highlight the importance of studying higher moments in determining dynamic universality classes and provide key insights into universal behavior in quantum systems.

Abstract:We consider the spin-1/2 XXX chain weakly perturbed away from integrability by an isotropic next-to-nearest neighbor exchange interaction. Recently, it was conjectured that this model possesses an infinite tower of quasiconserved integrals of motion (charges) [D. Kurlov et al., Phys. Rev. B 105, 104302 (2022)]. In this work we first test this conjecture by investigating how the norm of the adiabatic gauge potential (AGP) scales with the system size, which is known to be a remarkably accurate measure of chaos. We find that for the perturbed XXX chain the behavior of the AGP norm corresponds to neither an integrable nor a chaotic regime, which supports the conjectured quasi-integrability of the model. We then prove the conjecture and explicitly construct the infinite set of quasiconserved charges. Our proof relies on the fact that the XXX chain perturbed by next-to-nearest exchange interaction can be viewed as a truncation of an integrable long-range deformation of the Heisenberg spin chain.

Thermodynamic behavior of the XXZ Heisenberg s = 1/2 chain around the factorizing magnetic field

Abstract:We have investigated the zero-and finite-temperature behaviors of the anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain in the presence of a transverse magnetic field (h). The attention is concentrated on an interval of magnetic field between the factorizing field (h(f)) and the critical one (h(c)). The model presents a spin-flop phase for 0 < h < h(f) with an energy scale which is defined by the long range antiferromagnetic order while it undergoes an entanglement phase transition at h = h(f). The entanglement estimators clearly show that the entanglement is lost exactly at h = h(f), which justifies different quantum correlations on both sides of the factorizing field. As a consequence of zero entanglement (at h = h(f)) the ground state is known exactly as a product of single-particle states which is the starting point for initiating a spin wave theory. The linear spin wave theory is implemented to obtain the specific heat and thermal entanglement of the model in the interested region. A double-peak structure is found in the specific heat around h = h(f), which manifests the existence of two energy scales in the system as a result of two competing orders before the critical point. These results are confirmed by the low temperature Lanczos data which we have computed.
