Abstract:Spherical coverings on the S2 sphere and their algebraic numbers are given for the putatively optimal global solutions for some n-congruent spherical caps with minimal radius to completely cover the S2 sphere. A few locally optimal solutions are also examined.

Abstract:In terms of the almost complex connection and the unitary moving frame, a complex version on the theory of the nearly Kahler structure in S-6 is given. Under this framework, minimal surfaces in the nearly Kahler S-6 are studied. A complete classification for complete minimal surfaces in S-6 With constant Kahler angle and nonnegative curvature is given. Moreover, almost complex curves in S-6 are considered.

Abstract:We construct covering maps from infinite blowups of the n-dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) to certain compact fractafolds based on SG(n). These maps are fractal analogs of the usual covering maps from the line to the circle. The construction extends work of the second author in the case n = 2, but a different method of proof is needed, which amounts to solving a Sudoku-type puzzle. We can use the covering maps to define the notion of periodic function on the blowups. We give a characterization of these periodic functions and describe the analog of Fourier series expansions. We study covering maps onto quotient fractalfolds. Finally, we show that such covering maps fail to exist for many other highly symmetric fractals.
A Combinatorial Presentation for Branched Coverings of the 2-Sphere

Abstract:William Thurston (1946-2012) gave a combinatorial characterization for generic branched self-coverings of the two-sphere by associating a planar graph to them <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760</a>. By generalizing the notion of local balancing, the author extends the Thurston result to encompass any branched covering of the two-sphere. As an application, we supply a lower bound for the number of equivalence classes of real rational functions for each given ramification profile. The theorem version that we prove concerns generic rational functions, assuring that if all critical points of that function are real, then we can transform it into a rational map with real coefficients by post-composition with an automorphism of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{1}$. The proof we present is constructive and founded on elementary arguments.}

Putatively optimal projective spherical designs with little apparent symmetry

Abstract:We give some new explicit examples of putatively optimal projective spherical designs. i.e., ones for which there is numerical evidence that they are of minimal size. These form continuous families, and so have little apparent symmetry in general, which requires the introduction of new techniques for their construction. New examples of interest include an 11-point spherical (3, 3)-design for R 3 , and a 12-point spherical (2, 2)-design for R 4 given by four Mercedes-Benz frames that lie on equi-isoclinic planes. We also give results of an extensive numerical study to determine the nature of the real algebraic variety of optimal projective real spherical designs, and in particular when it is a single point (a unique design) or corresponds to an infinite family of designs.

Abstract:This paper presents some theoretical results on the sphere coverage problem in the n-dimensional space. These results refer to the minimal number of spheres, denoted by Nk(a), to cover a cuboid. The first properties outline some theoretical results for the numbers Nk(a), including sub-additivity and monotony on each variable. We use then these results to establish some lower and upper bounds for Nk(a), as well as for the minimal density of spheres to achieve k-coverage. Finally, a computation is proposed to approximate the Nk(a) numbers, and some tables are produced to show them for 2D and 3D cuboids.

On coverings by Minkowski balls in the plane and a duality

Abstract:Lattice coverings in the real plane by Minkowski balls are studied. We exploit the duality of admissible lattices of Minkowski balls and inscribed convex symmetric hexagons of these balls. An explicit moduli space of the areas of these hexagons is constructed, giving the values of the determinants of corresponding covering lattices. Low and upper bounds for covering constants of Minkowski balls are given. The best known value of covering density of Minkowski ball is obtained. One conjecture and one problem are formulated.

Minimal Arrangements of Spherical Geodesics

Abstract:We study arrangements of geodesic arcs on a sphere, where all arcs are internally disjoint and each arc has its endpoints located within the interior of other arcs. We establish fundamental results concerning the minimum number of arcs in such arrangements, depending on local geometric constraints such as "one-sidedness" and "k-orientation". En route to these results, we generalize and settle an open problem from CCCG 2022, proving that any such arrangement has at least two "clockwise swirls" and at least two "counterclockwise swirls".

Abstract:For a branched cover between two closed orientable surfaces, the Riemann-Hurwitz formula relates the Euler characteristics of the surfaces, the total degree of the cover, and the total length of the partitions of the degree given by the local degrees at the preimages of the branching points. A very old problem asks whether a collection of partitions of an integer having the appropriate total length (that we call a candidate cover) always comes from some branched cover. The answer is known to be in the affirmative whenever the candidate base surface is not the 2-sphere, while for the 2-sphere exceptions do occur. A long-standing conjecture however asserts that when the candidate degree is a prime number, a candidate cover is always realizable. In this paper we analyze the question from the point of view of the geometry of 2-orbifolds, and we provide strong supporting evidence for the conjecture. In particular, we exhibit three different sequences of candidate covers, indexed by their degree, such that for each sequence: (1) The degrees giving realizable covers have asymptotically zero density in the naturals; (2) Each prime degree gives a realizable cover.

Spherical codes with prescribed signed permutation automorphisms inside shells of low-dimensional integer lattices

Abstract:Let $\textrm{S}(n,t,k)$ be the maximum size of a code containing only vectors of the $k$th shell of the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$ such that the inner product between distinct vectors does not exceed $t$. In this paper we compute lower bounds for $\textrm{S}(n,t,k)$ for small values of $n$, $t$ and $k$ by carrying out computer searches for codes with prescribed automorphisms. We prescribe groups of signed permutation automorphisms acting transitively on the pairs of coordinates and coordinate values as well as other closely related groups of automorphisms. Several of the constructed codes lead to improved lower bounds for spherical codes.

Random minimal surfaces in spheres

Abstract:For any dimension $n>1$, we construct a branched minimal immersion $\psi_n$ from a closed Riemann surface $\Sigma_n$ to the round $n$-sphere of radius $\sqrt{8}$, such that if $\Sigma_n$ is endowed with the pullback metric and if $K$ is its Gaussian curvature, then $\Sigma_n$ is almost hyperbolic in the sense that $$\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{1}{\mathrm{Area}(\Sigma_n)}\int_{\Sigma_n} |K+1|=0$$ and $\Sigma_n$ Benjamini-Schramm converges to the hyperbolic plane. Our proof is based on a connection between minimal surface theory and random matrix theory. The maps $\psi_n$ are obtained by applying the spherical Plateau problem to random unitary representations $\rho_N$ of the free group $F_2$.

Abstract:We show that there exists an absolute constant $c_0<1$ such that for all $n \ge 2$, any set $A \subset S^{n-1}$ of density at least $c_0$ contains $n$ pairwise orthogonal vectors. The result is sharp up to the value of the constant $c_0$. Moreover, we show that for all $2\le k \le n$ a set $A$ avoiding $k$ pairwise orthogonal vectors has measure at most $\exp(-c \min\{\sqrt{n}, n/k\})$ for some $c>0$. Proofs rely on the harmonic analysis on the sphere and the hypercontractive inequality.

Abstract:Working in univalent foundations, we investigate the symmetries of spheres, i.e., the types of the form $\mathbb{S}^n = \mathbb{S}^n$. The case of the circle has a slick answer: the symmetries of the circle form two copies of the circle. For higher-dimensional spheres, the type of symmetries has again two connected components, namely the components of the maps of degree plus or minus one. Each of the two components has $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ as fundamental group. For the latter result, we develop an EHP long exact sequence.

On Covering Radii in Function Fields

Abstract:In this paper, we shall discuss topics in geometry of numbers in the positive characteristic setting, such as covering radii. We find a closed form for covering radii with respect to convex bodies, which will lead to a proof of the positive characteristic analogue of Woods' conjecture in this setting. Then, we will prove a positive characteristic analogue of Minkowski's conjecture about the multiplicative covering radius. To do this, we shall prove a positive characteristic analogue of Solan's result that every diagonal orbit intersects the set of well rounded lattices. This implies that the Gruber-Mordell spectrum in positive characteristic is trivial in every dimension.

Abstract:We construct spherical harmonics for fuzzy spheres of even and odd dimensions, generalizing the correspondence between finite Matrix algebras and fuzzy two-spheres. The finite Matrix algebras associated with the various fuzzy spheres have a natural basis which falls in correspondence with tensor constructions of irreducible representations of orthogonal groups SO(n). This basis is useful in describing fluctuations around various D-brane constructions of fuzzy spherical objects. The higher fuzzy spheres are non-associative algebras that appear as projections of associative algebras related to matrices. The non-associativity (as well as the non-commutativity) disappears in the leading large N limit, ensuring the correct classical limit. Some simple aspects of the combinatorics of the fuzzy four-sphere can be accounted by a heuristic picture of giant fractional instantons.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, negatively curved, $n$-dimensional manifold with fundamental group $\Gamma$. Let $S^\infty$ be the unit sphere in $\ell^2(\Gamma)$, on which $\Gamma$ acts by the regular representation. The spherical volume of $M$ is a topological invariant introduced by Besson-Courtois-Gallot. We show that it is equal to the area of an $n$-dimensional area-minimizing minimal surface inside the ultralimit of $S^\infty/\Gamma$, in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchheim. Our proof combines the theory of metric currents with a study of limits of the regular representation of torsion-free hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We compute the asymptotic number of cylinders, weighted by their area to any non-negative power, on any cyclic branched cover of any generic translation surface in any stratum. Our formulas depend only on topological invariants of the cover and number-theoretic properties of the degree: in particular, the ratio of the related Siegel-Veech constants for the locus of covers and for the base stratum component is independent of the number of branch values. One surprising corollary is that this ratio for $area^3$ Siegel-Veech constants is always equal to the reciprocal of the the degree of the cover. A key ingredient is a classification of the connected components of certain loci of cyclic branched covers.

This criterion generalizes the results previously obtained by Jiang (2004), Pervova-Petronio (2006), Zhu (2019), and Wei-Wu-Xu (2024).
