High‐Energy and Safe Lithium Battery Enabled by Solid‐state Redox Chemistry in Fireproof Gel Electrolyte

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed thriving efforts in pursuing high‐energy batteries at an unaffordable cost of safety. Herein, we propose a high‐energy and safe quasi‐solid‐state lithium battery by solid‐state redox chemistry of polymer‐based molecular Li2S cathode in fireproof gel electrolyte. This chemistry fully eliminates not only the negative effect of extremely reactive Li metal and oxygen species on cell safety but also the damage of electrode reversibility by soluble redox intermediates. The molecular Li2S cathode exhibits an exceptional lifetime of 2000 cycles, 100% Coulombic efficiency, high capacity of 830 mAh g–1 with ultralow capacity loss of 0.005 – 0.01% per cycle and superior rate capability up to 10 C. Meanwhile, it shows high stability in the carbonate‐involved electrolyte for maximizing the compatibility with carbonate‐efficient Si anode. The optimized cell chemistry exerts high energy over 750 Wh kg–1 for 500 cycles with fast rate response, high‐temperature adaptability and no self‐discharge. A fire‐retardant composite gel electrolyte is developed to further strengthen the intrinsic safe redox between Li2S cathode and Si anode, which secures remarkable safety against extreme abuse of overheating, short circuits and mechanical damage in the air/water or even on fire. Abstract:As high energy density and enhanced safety are required for the lithium-ion battery development, all-solid-state battery has attracted significant attention. Herein, we report an all-solid-state full battery consisting of a Li7P3S11 solid electrolyte coated silicon anode, Li2S/graphene composite cathode, and Li7P3S11 solid-state electrolyte. With a high capacity for the silicon anode and Li2S cathode, this battery yields a high theoretical specific energy density up to 1495 Wh kg−1, which is higher than that of lithium-ion batteries based on oxide cathodes. Moreover, Li2S cathode is used as lithium source instead of using metallic lithium, avoiding interface reaction between lithium metal anode and sulfide electrolyte Li7P3S11. This all-solid-state battery system we proposed could avoid the safety issues associated with the use of lithium metal and be a promising candidate for an enhanced energy density, which would promote their applications in the fields of electric vehicles and portable electronics.
High Energy Density Solid State Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by Sub‐5 Μm Solid Polymer Electrolytes

Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are considered as the most promising next-generation high-energy-density energy storage devices due to their ability in addressing the safety concerns from organic electrolytes and enabling energy dense lithium anodes. To ensure the high energy density of SSBs, solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are required to be thin and light-weight, and simultaneously offer a wide electrochemical window to pair with high-voltage cathodes. However, the decrease of SSE thickness and delicate structure may increase the cell safety risks, which is detrimental for the practical application of SSBs. Herein, to demonstrate a high-energy-density SSB with sufficient safety insurance, an ultrathin (4.2 mu m) bilayer SSE with porous ceramic scaffold and double-layer Li+-conducting polymer, is proposed. The fire-resistant and stiff ceramic scaffold improves the safety capability and mechanical strength of the composite SSE, and the bilayer polymer structure enhances the compatibility of Li metal anode and high-voltage cathodes. The 3D ceramic facilitates Li-ion conduction and regulates Li deposition. Thus, high energy density of 506 Wh kg(-1) and 1514 Wh L-1 is achieved based on LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathodes with a low N/P ratio and long lifespan over 3000 h. High-energy-density anode-free cells are further demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract Anode-free lithium batteries without lithium metal excess are a practical option to maximize the energy content beyond the conventional design of Li-ion and Li metal batteries. However, their performance and reliability are still limited by using low-capacity oxygen-releasing intercalation cathodes and flammable liquid electrolytes. Herein, we propose quasi-solid-state anode-free batteries containing lithium sulfide-based cathodes and non-flammable polymeric gel electrolytes. Such batteries exhibit an energy density of 1323 Wh L −1 at the pouch cell level. Moreover, the lithium sulfide-based anode-free cell chemistry endows intrinsic safety thanks to a lack of uncontrolled exothermic reactions of reactive oxygen and excess Li inventory. Furthermore, the non-flammable gel electrolyte, developed from MXene-doped fluorinated polymer, inhibits polysulfide shuttling, hinders Li dendrite formation and further secures cell safety. Finally, we demonstrate the improved cell safety against mechanical, electrical and thermal abuses.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries are flourishing due to their excellent potential energy density. Substantial efforts have been made to improve their electrochemical performance by increasing the conductivity of solid-state electrolytes (SEs) and designing a compatible battery configuration. The safety of a solid lithium battery has generally been taken for granted due to the nonflammability and strength of SEs. However, recent results have shown the release of dangerous gases and intense heat due to the formation of lithium dendrites, indicating the safety of solid-state lithium batteries may have been overestimated. In this review, we introduce a safety evaluation methodology, then focus on the garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and sulfide-based SEs, summarizing their structure, conductivity, compatibility with a lithium metal anode, electrochemical/chemical stability, and mechanical/thermal stability, which correlate closely with battery safety. We also evaluate the safety of all-solid-state lithium batteries, then conclude by discussing future avenues for improving the safety of SE-based batteries.

Abstract:Anovel lithiated Si-S battery exploiting an optimized solid-like electrolyte is presented. This electrolyte is fabricated by integrating ether-based liquid electrolyte with SiO2 hollow nanosphere layer to suppress the shuttle effect and fluoroethylene carbonate additive to optimize the anodic solid electrolyte interface. The prepared lithiated Si-S batteries exhibit enhanced cycle life, low flammability, and strong recovery ability against short-circuit.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries based on a solid-state sulfide electrolyte show great promise in achieving the next generation of rechargeable chemical power sources with high energy density and long lifespans. However, the poor solid-solid contacts within the electrode and at the electrode/electrolyte interface, as well as lithium dendrite formation and its interaction with sulfide electrolytes during cycling, are significant challenges that must be overcome before the full potential of sulfide electrolyte-based lithium-sulfur batteries can be realized. Here, we propose a [Li(triglyme)](+)[TFSI](-) (LiG3) solvent-salt complex with an excellent stabilizing effect towards Li10GeP2S12 electrolyte and demonstrate its application in a high-performance solid-state lithium-sulfur battery. A small quantity of LiG3 added into the cathode material dramatically enhanced the Li+ ion transfer and facilitated the transition from a solid-solid redox reaction involving sulfur species to a solid-liquid dual-phase redox reaction. Simultaneously, we achieved a stabilized solid electrolyte interphase layer at the lithium anode side by the in situ electrochemical reduction of LiG3 complex. The solid-state lithium-sulfur cells demonstrated high specific capacities of 1100 mA h g(-1) at 0.2C and 650 mA h g(-1) at 1.0C. Furthermore, pouch cells with dimensions of 4 x 5 cm(2) were successfully fabricated, indicating the promising practical application of these cells in energy storage.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries have the advantages of high theoretical energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness, and they are the most promising next-generation high-energy density secondary battery systems. Currently, liquid lithium-sulfur batteries based on organic electrolytes have some problems such as lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttle effect, electrolyte flammability and lithium dendrite, resulting in low coulombic efficiency and poor cycle stability of lithium-sulfur batteries, and there are serious safety hazards. The uses of solid electrolytes (gel polymers, solid polymers, ceramics, composite electrolytes, etc.) in place of organic liquid electrolytes are effective strategies to address the above problems. Herein, we present the research status of solid-state electrolytes of lithium-sulfur batteries, and summarize their advantages/disadvantages and improvement strategies, and focuses on the research progress of ceramic solid electrolytes. Finally, we forecast future development trends of solid lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Li metal is considered to be the most ideal anode due to its highest energy density, but traditional lithium-metal liquid-electrolyte battery system suffers from low Coulombic efficiency, repetitive SEI formation, Li dendrite growth, etc. Herein, a new battery configuration is proposed to exploit room-temperature liquid lithium solutions (Li-BP-Ether) as anodes and argyrodite sulfide as solid electrolyte. Such liquid lithium solutions can deliver high safety performance, excellent dendrite suppression capability, low redox potentials, and high conductivity of 12 mS cm−1 at room temperature. Moreover, sulfide solid electrolyte has the highest room-temperature ionic conductivity among all solid electrolytes and ideal mechanical ductility for fully compact layer simply by cold pressing. This battery configuration combines the advantages of these materials and can operate at neglectable external pressure (3 kPa) in a wide temperature range (−20∼50 °C). As a result, a high reversible discharge capacity (140.4 mAh g−1) and high efficiencies (99.7% Coulombic efficiency and >96% energy efficiency after ∼100 cycles) are achieved. Furthermore, this battery demonstrates the best cycle stability and the highest efficiency among all the liquid lithium solution battery systems using solid cathodes reported so far. Overall, this class of battery configuration may open up a promising route for high-energy-density, cost-effective and safe rechargeable lithium batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li−S) battery has been considered as one of the most promising future batteries owing to the high theoretical energy density (2600 W·h·kg −1 ) and the usage of the inexpensive active materials (elemental sulfur). The recent progress in fundamental research and engineering of the Li−S battery, involved in electrode, electrolyte, membrane, binder, and current collector, has greatly promoted the performance of Li−S batteries from the laboratory level to the approaching practical level. However, the safety concerns still deserve attention in the following application stage. This review focuses on the development of the electrolyte for Li−S batteries from liquid state to solid state. Some problems and the corresponding solutions are emphasized, such as the soluble lithium polysulfides migration, ionic conductivity of electrolyte, the interface contact between electrolyte and electrode, and the reaction kinetics. Moreover, future perspectives of the safe and high-performance Li−S batteries are also introduced.

Abstract:High-energy-density lithium metal batteries are the next-generation battery systems of choice, and replacing the flammable liquid electrolyte with a polymer solid-state electrolyte is a prominent conduct towards realizing the goal of high-safety and high-specific-energy devices. Unfortunately, the inherent intractable problems of poor solid-solid contacts between the electrode/electrolyte and the growth of Li dendrites hinder their practical applications. The in-situ solidification has demonstrated a variety of advantages in the application of polymer electrolytes and artificial interphase, including the design of integrated polymer electrolytes and asymmetric polymer electrolytes to enhance the compatibility of solid-solid contact and compatibility between various electrolytes, and the construction of artificial interphase between the Li anode and cathode to suppress the formation of Li dendrites and to enhance the high-voltage stability of polymer electrolytes. This review firstly elaborates the history of in-situ solidification for solid-state batteries, and then focuses on the synthetic methods of solidified electrolytes. Furthermore, the recent progress of in-situ solidification technology from both the design of polymer electrolytes and the construction of artificial interphase is summarized, and the importance of in-situ solidification technology in enhancing safety is emphasized. Finally, prospects, emerging challenges, and practical applications of in-situ solidification are envisioned.

In Situ Polymerization Facilitating Practical High‐Safety Quasi‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract:Quasi‐solid‐state batteries (QSSBs) are gaining widespread attention as a promising solution to improve battery safety performance. However, the safety improvement and the underlying mechanisms of QSSBs remain elusive. Herein, a novel strategy combining high‐safety ethylene carbonate‐free liquid electrolyte and in situ polymerization technique is proposed to prepare practical QSSBs. The Ah‐level QSSBs with LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 cathode and graphite‐silicon anode demonstrate significantly improved safety features without sacrificing electrochemical performance. As evidenced by accelerating rate calorimetry tests, the QSSBs exhibit increased self‐heating temperature and onset temperature (T2), and decreased temperature rise rate during thermal runaway (TR). The T2 has a maximum increase of 48.4 °C compared to the conventional liquid batteries. Moreover, the QSSBs do not undergo TR until 180 °C (even 200 °C) during the hot‐box tests, presenting significant improvement compared to the liquid batteries that run into TR at 130 °C. Systematic investigations show that the in‐situ‐formed polymer skeleton effectively mitigates the exothermic reactions between lithium salts and lithiated anode, retards the oxygen release from cathode, and inhibits crosstalk reactions between cathode and anode at elevated temperatures. The findings offer an innovative solution for practical high‐safety QSSBs and open up a new sight for building safer high‐energy‐density batteries. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Compared to conventional organic liquid electrolyte, solid-state polymer electrolytes are extensively considered as an alternative candidate for next generation high-energy batteries because of their high safety, non-leakage and electrochemical stability with the metallic lithium (Li) anode. However, solid-state polymer electrolytes generally show low ionic conductivity and high interfacial impedance to electrodes. Here we report a hybrid solid-state electrolyte, presenting an ultra-high ionic conductivity of 3.27 mS cm(-1) at room temperature, a wide electrochemical stability window of 4.9 V, and non-flammability. This electrolyte consists of a polymer blend matrix (polyethylene oxide and poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)), Li+ conductive ceramic filler (Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)(3)) and a solvate ionic liquid (LiFSI in tetra ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, 1:1 in molar ratio) as plasticizer. The introduction of the solvate ionic liquid to the solid-state electrolyte not only improves its ionic conductivity but also remarkably enhances the stability of the interface with Li anode. When applied in Li metal batteries, a Li vertical bar Li symmetric cell can operate stably over 800 h with a minimal polarization of 25 mV and a full Li vertical bar LiFePO4 cell delivers a high specific capacity of 158 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at room temperature.

Abstract:Lithium-metal batteries (LMB) are very attractive owing to their high theoretical energy density, but significant challenges such as low ionic conductivity and safety risks prevent their widespread application. Herein, we report a new design of high-safety all-solid-state LMB by using high-ionic-conductivity thermoresponsive solid-polymer electrolyte (TSPE), providing a smart and active approach to realize thermally induced autonomic shutdown of LMBs by efficiently inhibiting the ionic conduction between electrodes beyond an unsafe temperature. The as-obtained TSPE exhibits a high ionic conductivity (2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 30 °C), which enables a significantly improved capacity of 160 mA h g-1 at 0.2 C and outstanding high rate capability up to 5 C as well as a super-long cycle life of over 400 cycles for the constructed all-solid-state Li||LiFePO4 batteries. The present study opens up a new avenue for the fabrication of self-protective all-solid-state batteries with inherent intelligent thermal management to ensure battery-series safety.

Abstract:Due to the high specific capacity, low cost, and environmental friendliness, lithium-sulfur batteries hold great potential to become the mainstay of next-generation energy storage system. Regarding the composition of sulfur/carbon in cathode, flammable organic liquid electrolyte, and lithium metal anode, great concerns about the safety have been raised. Hence solid-electrolyte-based lithium-sulfur batteries, as one alternative route for safe batteries, are highly interested. This review highlights the recent research progress of lithium-sulfur batteries with solid electrolytes. Both sulfide solid electrolytes and oxide solid electrolytes are included.The sulfide solid electrolytes are mainly employed in all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries, while the oxide solid electrolytes are applied in hybrid electrolyte for lithium-sulfur batteries. The challenges and perspectives in this field are also featured on the basis of its current progress.

Abstract:All-solid-state Li metal battery has been regarded as a promising battery technology due to its high energy density based on the high capacity of lithium metal anode and high safety based on the all solid state electrolyte without inflammable solvent. However, challenges still exist mainly in the poor contact and unstable interface between electrolyte and electrodes. Herein, we demonstrate an asymmetric design of the composite polymer electrolyte with two different layers to overcome the interface issues at both the cathode and the anode side simultaneously. At the cathode side, the polypropylene carbonate layer has enough viscosity and flexibility to reduce the inter-facial resistance, while at the Li anode side, the polyethylene oxide layer modified with hexagonal boron nitride has high mechanical strength to suppress the Li dendrite growth. Owing to the synergetic effect between different components, the as-prepared double layer composite polymer electrolyte demonstrates a large electrochemical window of 5.17 V, a high ionic conductivity of 6.1 × 10-4 S/cm, and a transference number of 0.56, featuring excellent ion transport kinetics and good chemical stability. All-solid-state Li metal battery assembled with LiFePO4 cathode and Li anode delivers a high capacity of 150.9 mA h/g at 25 °C and 0.1 C-rate, showing great potential for practical applications.

Smart Solid‐State Interphases Enable High‐Safety and High‐Energy Practical Lithium Batteries

Abstract:With the electrochemical performance of batteries approaching the bottleneck gradually, it is increasingly urgent to solve the safety issue. Herein, all‐in‐one strategy is ingeniously developed to design smart, safe, and simple practical pouch‐type cells, taking full advantage of liquid and solid‐state electrolytes. All the fundamental findings open up a new direction to develop high‐performance batteries. With the electrochemical performance of batteries approaching the bottleneck gradually, it is increasingly urgent to solve the safety issue. Herein, all‐in‐one strategy is ingeniously developed to design smart, safe, and simple (3S) practical pouch‐type LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2||Graphite@SiO (NCM811||Gr@SiO) cell, taking full advantage of liquid and solid‐state electrolytes. Even under the harsh thermal abuse and high voltage condition (100 °C, 3–4.5 V), the pouch‐type 3S NCM811||Gr@SiO cell can present superior capacity retention of 84.6% after 250 cycles (based pouch cell: 47.8% after 250 cycles). More surprisingly, the designed 3S NCM811||Gr@SiO cell can efficiently improve self‐generated heat T1 by 45 °C, increase TR triggering temperature T2 by 40 °C, and decrease the TR highest T3 by 118 °C. These superior electrochemical and safety performances of practical 3S pouch‐type cells are attributed to the robust and stable anion‐induced electrode‐electrolyte interphases and local solid‐state electrolyte protection layer. All the fundamental findings break the conventional battery design guidelines and open up a new direction to develop practical high‐performance batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and Lithium-selenium (Li-Se) batteries are considered as promising candidates for next-generation battery technologies, as they have high energy density and low cost. However, due to the use of a solid Li-metal anode and a liquid organic electrolyte, the current Li-S and Li-Se batteries face several issues in terms of Coulombic efficiency and cycling stability, which seriously impeded their development. Here, we report solid-electrolyte-based liquid Li-S and Li-Se (SELL-S and SELL-Se in short) batteries. The batteries use a Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) ceramic tube as electrolyte and work at temperatures higher than the melting point of Li; thus, polysulfide or polyselenide shuttle effects and Li dendrite growth are effectively prevented, and high energy density, together with high stability, fast charge/discharge capability, high Coulombic efficiency, and high energy efficiency, can be achieved. The SELL-S and SELL-Se batteries provide broader platforms for constructing high-energy, high-power, long-lifetime, and low-cost energy storage.
