Abstract:This paper proposes a novel optimization model and solution algorithm for the optimal sizing and long-term operation of a hybrid station, which consists of RES units along with a behind-the-meter BESS and acts as a price-taker in the wholesale electricity market. The ultimate goal is to determine the optimal installed capacity and storage energy of the behind-the-meter BESS that maximizes the total profits of the hybrid station arising from its participation in the wholesale electricity market in the long-term. A holistic approach is adopted, considering all RES and BESS techno-economic data and inherent operating constraints, their associated investment and operating costs, as well as the revenues/costs from the participation of the hybrid station to the full spectrum of the wholesale market segments. The BESS state-of-health and its inherent gradual degradation on a daily basis are modeled in detail, allowing for a more precise and realistic representation of the actual operating behavior of the BESS over time. A simulation analysis for three different hybrid station configurations along with two distinct hybrid station operating cases, in terms of its capability to charge directly from the network, is presented for a 20-year future period (2026-2045). The economic valuation of the long-term operation of the optimal hybrid station configuration has been made on the basis of well-known economic valuation indicators.
