Abstract:Extensive research has explored the association between heavy metal exposure and various health outcomes, including malignant neoplasms, hypertension, diabetes, and heart diseases. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between patterns of exposure to a mixture of seven heavy metals and these health outcomes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to explore the relationship between mixed exposure patterns of seven heavy metals in the blood (cadmium Cd, manganese Mn, lead Pb, mercury Hg, selenium Se, copper Cu, and zinc Zn) and several health outcomes (malignant tumors, hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes). The study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2016, analyzing the levels of heavy metals in blood samples from 7,236 adult participants and identifying three distinct heavy metal exposure patterns through cluster analysis. Specifically, the study found: - **Pattern 1** (low Cd-Pb-Hg-Se): Compared to Pattern 2, it showed a higher incidence of malignant tumors during 2011-2012 and 2015-2016; it also displayed higher rates of hypertension and heart disease across all time periods. - **Pattern 2** (low Cu & high Hg-Se): Served as the reference group for comparison with other patterns. - **Pattern 3** (high Cu-Cd-Pb): Associated with a lower incidence of malignant tumors during 2013-2014; linked to lower rates of hypertension and heart disease during 2013-2014 and 2015-2016. The study results suggest that combined exposure to different heavy metals may have complex effects on health, particularly concerning hypertension and heart disease. This provides a new perspective for understanding the potential health impacts of mixed heavy metal exposure and aids in public health management and promotion efforts.
