Associations of Parental Occupational Exposure to Extremely Low-Frequency Magnetic Fields with Childhood Leukemia Risk

Abstract:Previous studies on the association of parental occupational exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) with childhood leukemia risk have produced inconsistent results. To reevaluate this association, we performed a meta-analysis by pooling 11 case-control and one cohort studies. The overall results showed that neither maternal nor paternal occupational exposure was associated with childhood leukemia risk. For paternal occupational exposure, significant association was found when pooling studies with small number of cases (OR=1.96; 95% CI, 1.03-3.74) or with lower quality score (OR=1.52; 95% CI, 1.07-2.15). However, this association was not confirmed when pooling studies with large number of cases or high quality score. In conclusion, our data indicate no association between parental occupational ELF-MF exposure and childhood leukemia risk, and the elevated OR under certain subgroup analysis is likely due to chance. Further studies with precise ELF-MF exposure assessment are suggested.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between childhood leukaemia and established risk factors or other factors related to La Hague nuclear waste reprocessing plant.DESIGN: Case-control study.SETTING: Area within a 35 km radius of La Hague, Normandy, France.SUBJECTS: Twenty seven cases of leukaemia diagnosed during the period 1978-93 in people aged under 25 years and 192 controls matched for sex, age, place of birth, and residence at time of diagnosis.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Antenatal and postnatal exposure to x rays and viral infections, occupational exposure of parents (particularly ionising radiation), living conditions, lifestyle of parents and children.RESULTS: Increased trends were found for use of local beaches by mothers and children (P < or = 0.01); relative risks 2.87 (95% confidence intervals 1.05 to 8.72) and 4.49 (1.52 to 15.23) when categories were aggregated in two levels (more or less than once a month). Consumption of local fish and shellfish also showed an increased trend (P 0.01); relative risk 2.66 (0.91 to 9.51) when categories were grouped in two levels (more or less than once a week). A relative risk of 1.18 a year (1.03 to 1.42) was observed for length of residence in a granite-built house or in a granitic area. No association was shown with occupational radiation exposure in parents.CONCLUSIONS: There is some convincing evidence in childhood leukaemia of a causal role for environmental radiation exposure from recreational activities on beaches. New methods for identifying the environmental pathways, focusing on marine ecosystems, are warranted.
Association Between Parental Occupational Exposure to Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic Fields and Childhood Nervous System Tumors Risk: A Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:Previous epidemiological studies suggested association between parental occupational exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) and risk of childhood nervous system tumors, but the results were inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis of case-control and cohort studies to re-evaluate this association.METHODS:Relevant studies were identified by searching PubMed and Web of Science databases as well as by manual searching. Summary odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled with a fixed-effects or random-effects model.RESULTS:A total of 22 eligible articles (21 case-control studies and 1 cohort study) were included for the quantitative analysis. The results showed that parental occupational ELF-MF exposure was significantly associated with an increased risk of childhood nervous system tumors (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.02-1.21), and this association remained in studies on central nervous system (CNS) tumors (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.02-1.27) but not neuroblastoma (OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 0.92-1.14). Furthermore, maternal (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.05-1.23) but not paternal (OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.98-1.13) occupational ELF-MF exposure significantly increased risk of childhood nervous system tumors. Increased risk of childhood CNS tumors was significant associated with maternal (OR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.06-1.26) but not paternal (OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 0.98-1.34) occupational ELF-MF exposure.CONCLUSION:In conclusion, our results provide limited evidence for the association between maternal occupational exposure to ELF-MF and increased risk of childhood CNS tumors, which should be explained with cautions. Future studies are needed to further evaluate the association of paternal occupational ELF-MF exposure with risk of childhood CNS tumors.
Long-term exposure to air pollution at residential and workplace addresses and breast cancer risk: A case-control study nested in the French E3N-Générations cohort from 1990 to 2011

Abstract:Background: An increasing evidence links air pollution to breast cancer (BC) risk. Yet, pollutant exposure estimates at the workplace location in pollution exposure assessment have not been considered. Objectives: This study investigates the association between particulate matters (PM2·5, PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) atmospheric concentrations (1990-2011), at the women's residential and workplace locations, and BC risk. Methods: This case-control study of 2419 BC cases and 2984 controls, was nested in the French prospective E3N cohort. The annual mean PM2·5, PM10 and NO2 concentrations were estimated using a Land Use Regression model (50 m x 50 m resolution) and assigned to the women's geocoded residential and workplace locations, from cohort recruitment to their index date (date of case diagnosis). Odds ratios (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using multivariate logistic regression models. Results: An increased BC risk was observed for a 10 µg/m3 increase of the 1990-2011 average PM2·5 concentration estimates (OR=1·28; CI 1·00, 1·63). An increased risk was suggested for a 10 µg/m3 increase for PM10 (OR=1·09; CI 0·92, 1·30) and NO2 (OR=1·05; CI 0·97, 1·13). No effect modification by menopausal status, nor difference by hormone receptor status were observed. Discussion: This study is the first to estimate BC risk and long-term air pollutant exposure from both, residential and workplace location histories. Results suggest that residential PM2·5, PM10 and NO2 concentrations are strongly correlated with workplace ones, indicating that residential data may serve as proxy for overall exposure. Future studies should consider exposure during commuting.
Long-term exposure to airborne metals and risk of cancer in the French cohort Gazel

Abstract:Background: The specific compounds that make ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) carcinogen remain poorly identified. Some metals contribute to ambient PM2.5 and possibly to its adverse effects. But the challenge of assessing exposure to airborne metals limits epidemiological studies. Objective: To analyze the relationships between several airborne metals and risk of cancer in a large population. Methods: We estimated the individual exposure to 12 airborne metals of ∼ 12,000 semi-urban and rural participants of the French population-based Gazel cohort using moss biomonitoring data from a 20-year national program. We used principal component analyses (PCA) to derive groups of metals, and focused on six single carcinogenic or toxic metals (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, and vanadium). We used extended Cox models with attained age as time-scale and time-varying weighted average exposures, adjusted for individual and area-level covariables, to analyze the association between each exposure and all-site combined, bladder, lung, breast, and prostate cancer incidence. Results: We identified 2,401 cases of all-site cancer between 2001 and 2015. Over the follow-up, median exposures varied from 0.22 (interquartile range (IQR): 0.18-0.28) to 8.68 (IQR: 6.62-11.79) µg.g-1 of dried moss for cadmium and lead, respectively. The PCA yielded three groups identified as "anthropogenic", "crustal", and "marine". Models yielded positive associations between most single and groups of metal and all-site cancer, with e.g. hazard ratios of 1.08 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.13) for cadmium or 1.06 (95% CI: 1.02,1.10) for lead, per interquartile range increase. These findings were consistent across supplementary analyses, albeit attenuated when accounting for total PM2.5. Regarding specific site cancers, we estimated positive associations mostly for bladder, and generally with large confidence intervals. Conclusion: Most single and groups of airborne metals, except vanadium, were associated with risk of cancer. These findings may help identify sources or components of PM2.5 that may be involved in its carcinogenicity.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the association between children's and their parents' lifestyles, household environmental exposures and risk of childhood acute leukemia (AL).METHODS:A 1:2 matched case-control study of childhood AL was conducted in Shanghai between April 2011 and January 2014. The study enrolled 66 cases aged < 15, diagnosed with AL and 132 controls matched by age, gender and residence. All of the controls had no hematological diseases or previous history of malignancy. Children who had been adopted and had congenital genetic syndromes such as Down's syndrome or a positive HIV test result were not eligible as either cases or controls. Information was obtained from standardized face-to-face interviews of their parents/guardians with detailed questions on demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and household environment. Conditional logistic regression models were used to analyze effecting factors of childhood AL, odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated.RESULTS:Among 198 cases, 66 cases were aged (5.0 ± 3.7) years old, and 132 controls were aged (6.0 ± 3.8) years old (t = 0.48, P = 0.523). The paternal drink frequencies of cases and controls were 57.6% (38/66), and 31.1% (41/132), respectively (χ² = 4.91, P = 0.027). And the frequencies of household insecticides usage in the last year in the two groups were 78.8% (52/66), and 65.2% (86/132) (χ² = 3.87, P = 0.049). Chemical exposure during childhood (OR = 4.76, 95% CI: 1.34-16.89), maternal exposure to chemicals (OR = 4.51, 95% CI: 1.65-12.33), household insecticides use during 0-3 years of child (OR = 2.90, 95% CI: 1.31-6.39), and renovating after their children's birth (OR = 3.12, 95% CI: 1.26-7.74) were associated with an increased risk of childhood AL and these differences between the cases and the controls have statistical significance. Besides, we found that frequent contaction with other children during 0-3 years old (OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.15-0.69) and ventilation during sleeping in summer (OR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.18-0.98) were associated with a decreased risk of childhood AL.CONCLUSION:Our results support the association between children's and their parents' lifestyles, household environmental exposures and childhood AL.

Abstract:Objective To explore environment hazards of childhood leukemia and to determine hazardous suspects on childhood leukemia.Methods A case-control study of 100 cases and 96 control children was conducted in two hospitals in shanghai from Nov.2001 to Oct.2002.All the cases were diagnosed by myeloid biopsy and treated in the hospitals.The controls were randomly selected by the admission numbers from other children who hospitalized there during the same period,excluding those children who were diagnosed as blood system diseases or other tumors.Results The data showed that hazards for both the total leukemia and acute lymphocytic leukemia(ALL) were significantly associated with familial genetic disorders(OR=6.3), diagnostic x-ray exposure(OR=3.4), history of catching cold during past one year(OR=2.1), the born order(OR=2.0), home house decoration(OR=2.1), cod-liver oil(OR=0.4).The nearest distance to the high voltage electricity was significantly associated with childhood leukemia(OR=2.9).In the unconditional Logistic regression model,the histroy of familial genetic diseases(OR=4.4), diagnostic x-ray exposure(OR=3.2), the history of catching cold during past one year(OR=2.6)and the house decoration(OR=2.0)were important hazardous factors of the childhood leukemia,except the cod-liver oil(OR=0.3).Among the above-mentioned hazards,association between the house decoration and the childhood leukemia was the first reported in this study.Conclusions The familial genetic factors,diagnostic x-ray exposure,the flu history during past one year and the house decoration may be the hazardous factors for childhood leukemia.

Abstract:What's new? Little is known about the etiology of childhood hematological malignancies (CHM). Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) could have an impact on these cancers through different pathways, such as its immunosuppressive effects or photosynthesis of vitamin D. The authors investigated if ambient solar UVR exposure was associated with CHM in Switzerland, a country with varying UVR. They observed a decreased risk of 24% for acute lymphoblastic leukemia per one‐unit increase of UV Index. Still little is known about possible environmental risk factors of childhood hematological malignancies (CHM). Previous studies suggest that ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is associated with a lower risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children. We investigated the association between solar UVR exposure and risk of CHM in Switzerland, a country with greatly varying topography and weather conditions. We included all resident children aged 0–15 years from the Swiss National Cohort during 1990–2016 and identified incident cancer cases through probabilistic record linkage with the Swiss Childhood Cancer Registry. We estimated the overall annual mean UV level and the mean level for the month of July during 2004–2018 at children's homes using a climatological model of the midday (11 am–3 pm) UV‐index (UVI) with a spatial resolution of 1.5–2 km. Using risk‐set sampling, we obtained a nested case–control data set matched by birth year and fitted conditional logistic regression models (virtually equivalent to analyzing full cohort data using proportional hazards models) adjusting for sex, neighborhood socio‐economic position, urbanization, air pollution, and background ionizing radiation. Our analyses included 1446 cases of CHM. Estimated adjusted hazard ratios (HR) per unit increase in UVI in July were 0.76 (95% CI 0.59–0.98) for leukemia and 0.74 (0.55–0.98) for ALL. Results for annual exposure were similar but confidence intervals were wider and included one. We found no evidence for an association for lymphoma overall (HR 1.14, 95% CI 0.59–2.19 for annual exposure) or diagnostic subgroups. Our study provides further support for an inverse association between exposure to ambient solar UVR and childhood ALL.

Abstract:Abstract Background: The aim of this study is to examine in detail the potential links between proven pathologies in the population and the atmospheric pollution to which this population is exposed, in an industrial context (Etang de Berre) and an abundant cocktail of pollutants, in connection with the diversity of emitting sources within that space (petrochemical industry, steel industry, refining, energy production, cement works, road, sea and air transport). Methods: A total of 178 variables of various natures (health, environmental and socio-economic) on a fine territorial scale (infracommunal) have been mobilised and simultaneously integrated within a Bayesian model based on artificial intelligence. Various unsupervised and supervised algorithms, and also sensitivity analyses provide the means to discover the links between these variables and the inhabitants’ living space. Results: By mobilising a high number of variables, broken up on a fine territorial scale, and by resorting to an appropriate tool to report on existing links between these variables, we were able to bring to the fore a number of relations between exposure and proven pathologies. For example, between cadmium and diabetes in the over 65 year-olds, or between vanadium and respiratory diseases. Threshold effects have also been revealed, notably for SO 2 which appears from a very low exposure threshold (6μg/m 3 ), therefore far below standard, which is set at 50μg/m 3 . It is also the case with hydrofluoric acid (HF), the effect of which is already felt from the 0.0028 μg/m 3 threshold. Also, exposure to cadmium in its particle phase, for an exposure between 0.214 and 0.250 μg/m 3 , disrupts insulin metabolism in the over 65. Finally, as soon as Benzo[k]fluoranthene (particle phase) exceeds the 0.672 μg/m 3 threshold, it results in a higher number of hospital stays for respiratory diseases in the 15-65 age group. A vulnerability differentiated according to age groups also appeared. Comorbidities known in literature have been found (respiratory and heart diseases). Also found was the influence of socio-economy on some pathologies (single-parent families and those without qualification at 15). Finally, diffuse PCBs pollution has been observed in the study area. Conclusion: The study has brought forward differentiated health profiles between the various IRISes 1 constituting the Pays de Martigues territory, and this should lead to the deployment of health services better suited to the needs of the population from a prevention perspective, and even to promote consultations with some specialists. For example, with a cardiologist, in those IRISes where the number of unqualified 15 year-olds is significant, since a relation has been found at that level, a relation most probably due to more difficult living and/or working conditions for these people. Likewise, prevention and social support measures should be taken to the benefit of single-parent families. At the same time, companies should go ahead with the desulfurization process of their installations, and even reduce their emissions concerning some noxious pollutants. Parental occupations at birth and risk of adult testicular germ cell tumors in offspring: a French nationwide case–control study

Abstract:Background: Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) are the most frequent cancer in young men in developed countries. Parental occupational exposures during early-life periods are suspected to increase TGCT risk. The objective was to estimate the association between parental occupations at birth and adult TGCT. Methods: A case–control study was conducted, including 454 TGCT cases aged 18–45 from 20 French university hospitals, matched to 670 controls based on region and year of birth. Data collected from participants included parental jobs at birth coded according to the International Standard Classification of Occupation—1968 and the French nomenclature of activities—1999. Odds ratios (OR) for TGCT and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using conditional logistic regression, adjusting for TGCT risk factors. Results: Paternal jobs at birth as service workers (OR = 1.98, CI 1.18–3.30), protective service workers (OR = 2.40, CI 1.20–4.81), transport equipment operators (OR = 1.96, CI 1.14–3.37), specialized farmers (OR = 2.66, CI 1.03–6.90), and maternal jobs as secondary education teachers (OR = 2.27, CI 1.09–4.76) or in secondary education (OR = 2.35, CI 1.13–4.88) were significantly associated with adult TGCT. The risk of seminoma was increased for the above-mentioned paternal jobs and that of non-seminomas for public administration and defence; compulsory social security (OR = 1.99, CI 1.09–3.65); general, economic, and social administration (OR = 3.21, CI 1.23–8.39) for fathers; and secondary education teacher (OR = 4.67, CI 1.87–11.67) and secondary education (OR = 3.50, CI 1.36–9.01) for mothers. Conclusion: Some paternal jobs, such as service workers, transport equipment operators, or specialized farmers, and maternal jobs in secondary education seem to be associated with an increased risk of TGCT with specific features depending on the histological type. These data allow hypotheses to be put forward for further studies as to the involvement of occupational exposures in the risk of developing TGCT, such as exposure to pesticides, solvents, or heavy metals.

Abstract:We conducted a hospital-based case–control study to explore the association between proximity to various land use types and childhood leukemia and lymphoma. This research involved 428 cases of childhood leukemia and lymphoma (2016–2021), along with a control group of 428 children aged 1–15 in Tehran. We analyzed the risk of childhood cancer associated with land use by employing logistic regression adjusted for confounding factors such as parental smoking and family history. The odds ratio (OR) for children with leukemia and lymphoma residing within 100 m of the nearest highway was 1.87 (95% CI = 1.00–3.49) and 1.71 (95% CI = 1.00–2.93), respectively, in comparison to those living at a distance of 1000 m or more from a highway. The OR for leukemia with exposure to petrol stations within 100 m was 2.15 (95% CI = 1.00–4.63), and for lymphoma it was 1.09 (95% CI = 0.47–2.50). A significant association was observed near power lines (OR = 3.05; 95% CI = 0.97–9.55) within < 100 m for leukemia. However, no significant association was observed between power lines and the incidence of childhood lymphoma. There was no association between bus stations, major road class 2, and the incidence of childhood leukemia and lymphoma. In conclusion, our results suggest a possible association between the incidence of childhood leukemia and proximity to different urban land uses (i.e., highways and petrol stations). This study is the first step in understanding how urban land use affects childhood leukemia and lymphoma in Tehran. However, comprehensive studies considering individual-level data and specific pollutants are essential for a more nuanced understanding of these associations.

Abstract:Background: The effects of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields, especially their long-term health effects, including childhood leukaemia, remain elusive. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the exposure to magnetic fields >0.4 μT as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans (group 2 B)' for childhood leukaemia. However, the number of exposed individuals, particularly children, remains poorly documented in international literature. The objective of this study was to estimate the number of individuals living near a high or very high voltage line in France (≥63 kV), among the general population and children under the age of five years. Methods: The estimate considered different exposure scenarios depending on the line voltage and the distance of the housing from it, and whether the line is overhead or underground. The exposure scenarios were obtained using a multilevel linear model created from a measurement database published by "Réseau de transport d'électricité", the operator of the French electricity transmission network. Results: Between 0.11% (n = 67,893) and 1.01% (n = 647,569) of the French population and between 0.10% (n = 4712) and 1.03% (n = 46,950) of children under five years of age were estimated to be living in an area potentially exposed to a magnetic field, depending on the exposure scenario (>0.4 μT and >0.1 μT, respectively). Conclusions: By making it possible to estimate the total number of residents, schools, and health institutions near high-voltage power lines, the proposed methodology can help identify potential co-exposures near high-voltage power lines, which are regularly cited as a possible explanation for contradictory results from epidemiological studies.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between parental exposure to chemicals and the risk of childhood acute leukemia.METHODS:An exploratory case-control study was conducted among 201 new cases of childhood acute leukemia under 15 years old who went to 3 children's hospitals in Shanghai, China from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010, as well as 201 sex- and age-matched children (as controls) who went to the child health care clinic or department of orthopedics in the above hospitals. A survey was performed by face-to-face interviews with children's mothers.RESULTS:The risk factors for childhood acute leukemia might include maternal exposure to total chemicals (diesel oil, gasoline, paints, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers) from 3 months before pregnancy to the end of pregnancy (OR = 2.9, 95%CI = 1.1 ∼ 7.8), paternal exposure to insecticides (OR = 10.1, 95%CI = 1.2 ∼ 82.9) and chemical fertilizers (OR = 9.5, 95%CI = 1.1 ∼ 79.6) within 3 months before pregnancy, maternal working experiences in agriculture and forestry before pregnancy (OR = 8.4, 95%CI = 1.4 ∼ 50.2) and in spinning, leather processing, decoration, and vehicle repair before pregnancy (OR = 3.0, 95%CI = 1.2 ∼ 7.9) and during pregnancy (OR = 3.2, 95%CI = 1.1 ∼ 9.6), and paternal working experiences in agriculture and forestry (OR = 9.6, 95%CI = 2.1-44.8) and in spinning, leather processing, decoration, and vehicle repair (OR = 2.3, 95%CI = 1.1-5.0).CONCLUSION:Parental exposure to chemicals may increase the risk of childhood acute leukemia in their offspring.

Abstract:Metabolic polymorphisms may influence the risk of childhood leukaemia related to maternal tobacco, coffee or alcohol consumption. The data were extracted from a case-control study including 280 cases of acute leukaemia and 288 controls. Blood sampling was obtained for a representative subset of 219 cases and 105 controls. Gene-environment interactions were estimated using both case-control and case-only analyses. The polymorphisms of CYP1A1, GSTM1, GSTP1, GSTT1 and NQO1 were not associated with the risk of leukaemia. The slow EPHX1 allele was negatively associated with childhood leukaemia while an inverse non-significant association was observed with the fast EPHX1 allele. Maternal smoking during pregnancy was not related to leukaemia, but an interaction was observed in the case-only analysis with CYP1A1*2A variant allele (odds ratio (OR) 2.2 [1.0-4.9]) and with GSTM1 deletion (OR 2.3 [1.2-4.4]). Conversely, coffee drinking interacted negatively with NQO1 polymorphism in the case-only analysis (OR 0.6 [0.3-1.2] and 0.4 [0.1-1.0] for light and heavy coffee consumptions, respectively). This study suggests that maternal smoking may be a risk factor for leukaemia in children who carry CYP1A1 or GSTM1 genotypes, which might increase reactive metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Background: While many studies have concluded that local traffic density is positively associated with childhood leukemia, the results are inconsistent. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia. Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from January 1979 to December 2013. We selected and assessed journal articles evaluating the relationship between local traffic density and the risk of leukemia in children. The analysis was carried out using STATA version 12.0. Results: A total of 11 articles, including 12 estimates of effect, were included in our meta-analysis. The summary effect size from the random-effects model, expressed as an odds ratio, was 1.03 (95% CI: 0.98-1.09, p=0.002). No significant association between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia was found. Similar conclusions were found on subgroup analysis. Conclusions: The results of our meta-analysis suggested no association between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia. This implies that living in close proximity to roads with heavy traffic may not increase the risk of childhood leukemia. However, further high-quality prospective trials are needed to support these results.
Screening for Elevated Blood Lead Levels in Children: Assessment of Criteria and a Proposal for New Ones in France

Abstract:The decline in children's Blood Lead Levels (BLL) raises questions about the ability of current lead poisoning screening criteria to identify those children most exposed. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the performance of current screening criteria in identifying children with blood lead levels higher than 50 µg/L in France, and to propose new criteria. Data from a national French survey, conducted among 3831 children aged 6 months to 6 years in 2008-2009 were used. The sensitivity and specificity of the current criteria in predicting blood lead levels higher than or equal to 50 µg/L were evaluated. Two predictive models of BLL above 44 µg/L (for lack of sufficient sample size at 50 µg/L) were built: the first using current criteria, and the second using newly identified risk factors. For each model, performance was studied by calculating the area under the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve. The sensitivity of current criteria for detecting BLL higher than or equal to 50 µg/L was 0.51 (0.26; 0.75) and specificity was 0.66 (0.62; 0.70). The new model included the following criteria: foreign child newly arrived in France, mother born abroad, consumption of tap water in the presence of lead pipes, pre-1949 housing, period of construction of housing unknown, presence of peeling paint, parental smoking at home, occupancy rates for housing and child's address in a cadastral municipality or census block comprising more than 6% of housing that is potentially unfit and built pre-1949. The area under the ROC curve was 0.86 for the new model, versus 0.76 for the current one. The lead poisoning screening criteria should be updated. The risk of industrial, occupational and hobby-related exposure could not be assessed in this study, but should be kept as screening criteria.
