Abstract:Abstract To circumvent the ill-posedness issues present in various models of continuum fluid mechanics, we present a dynamical systems approach aiming at the selection of physically relevant solutions. Even under the presence of infinitely many solutions to the full Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid, our approach permits to select a system of solutions (one trajectory for every initial condition) satisfying the classical semiflow property. Moreover, the selection respects the well accepted admissibility criteria for physical solutions, namely, maximization of the entropy production rate and the weak–strong uniqueness principle. Consequently, strong solutions are always selected whenever they exist and stationary states are stable and included in the selection as well. To this end, we introduce a notion of dissipative solution , which is given by a triple of density, momentum and total entropy defined as expectations of a suitable measure-valued solution.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the first existence result of weak solutions to the 3D Euler equation with initial vorticity concentrated in a circle and velocity field in $C([0,T],L^{2^-})$. The energy becomes finite and decreasing for positive times, with vorticity concentrated in a ring that thickens and moves in the direction of the symmetry axis. With our approach, there is no need to mollify the initial data or to rescale the time variable. We overcome the singularity of the initial data by applying convex integration within the appropriate time-weighted space.

Abstract:We show that the Reynolds defect measure for a dissipative weak solution of the compressible Euler system vanishes for large time. This may be seen as a piece of evidence that the dissipative solutions are asymptotically close to weak solutions in the turbulent regime, whence suitable for describing compressible fluid flows in the long run.

Abstract:We consider weak solutions to the incompressible Euler equations. It is shown that energy conservation holds in any Onsager critical class in which smooth functions are dense. The argument is independent of the specific critical regularity and the underling PDE. This groups several energy conservation results and it suggests that critical spaces where smooth functions are dense are not at all different from subcritical ones, although possessing the "minimal" regularity index. Then, we study properties of the dissipation $D$ in the case of bounded solutions that are allowed to jump on $\mathcal{H}^d$-rectifiable space-time sets $\Sigma$, which are the natural dissipative regions in the compressible setting. As soon as both the velocity and the pressure posses traces on $\Sigma$, it is shown that $\Sigma$ is $D$-negligible. The argument makes the role of the incompressibility very apparent, and it prevents dissipation on codimension 1 sets even if they happen to be densely distributed. As a corollary, we deduce energy conservation for bounded solutions of "special bounded deformation", providing the first energy conservation criterion in a critical class where only an assumption on the "longitudinal" increment is made, while the energy flux does not vanish for kinematic reasons.

Abstract:Abstract We study the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations subject to stochastic forcing. We develop a concept of dissipative martingale solutions, where the nonlinear terms are described by generalised Young measures. We construct these solutions as the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions to the corresponding stochastic Navier–Stokes equations. This requires a refined stochastic compactness method incorporating the generalised Young measures. As a main novelty, our solutions satisfy a form of the energy inequality which gives rise to a weak–strong uniqueness result (pathwise and in law). A dissipative martingale solution coincides (pathwise or in law) with the strong solution as soon as the latter exists.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of dissipative measure-valued solution to the complete Euler system describing the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid. These solutions are characterized by a parameterized (Young) measure and a dissipation defect in the total energy balance. The dissipation defect dominates the concentration errors in the equations satisfied by the Young measure. A dissipative measure-valued solution can be seen as the most general concept of solution to the Euler system retaining its structural stability. In particular, we show that a dissipative measure-valued solution necessarily coincides with a classical one on its life span provided they share the same initial data.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of the inhomogeneous hyperdissipative Navier-Stokes equations on the whole space R-N, N >= 3. Compared with the classical inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes, the dissipative term -Delta u here is replaced by D(2)u, where D is a Fourier multiplier whose symbol is m(xi) = vertical bar xi vertical bar(N+2/4) For arbitrary small positive constants epsilon and delta, global well-posedness is showed for the data (rho(0), u(0)) such that (rho(0) - 1, u(0)) is an element of HN/2 + epsilon x H-delta with inf(x is an element of RN) rho(0) > 0. To our best knowledge, this is the first result on the inhomogeneous hyperdissipative Navier-Stokes equations, and it can also be viewed as the high-dimensional generalization of the 2D result for classical inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations given by Danchin [Local and global well-posedness results for flows of inhomogeneous viscous fluids. Abstract:We introduce a novel solution concept, denoted $\alpha$-dissipative solutions, that provides a continuous interpolation between conservative and dissipative solutions of the Cauchy problem for the two-component Camassa-Holm system on the line with vanishing asymptotics. All the $\alpha$-dissipative solutions are global weak solutions of the same equation in Eulerian coordinates, yet they exhibit rather distinct behavior at wave breaking. The solutions are constructed after a transformation into Lagrangian variables, where the solution is carefully modified at wave breaking.

On the well-possedness of time-dependent three-dimensional Euler fluid flows

Abstract:We study the mathematical properties of time-dependent flows of incompressible fluids that respond as an Euler fluid until the modulus of the symmetric part of the velocity gradient exceeds a certain, a-priori given but arbitrarily large, critical value. Once the velocity gradient exceeds this threshold, a dissipation mechanism is activated. Assuming that the fluid, after such an activation, dissipates the energy in a specific manner, we prove that the corresponding initial-boundary-value problem is globally-in-time well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. In particular, we show that for an arbitrary, sufficiently regular, initial velocity there is a unique weak solution to the spatially periodic problem.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new kind of hyperbolic geometric flows - dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow. This kind of flow is defined by a system of quasilinear wave equations with dissipative terms. Some interesting exact solutions are given, in particular, a new concept hyperbolic Ricci soliton is introduced and some of its geometric properties are described. We also establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for the dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of the flow defined on the Euclidean space of dimension larger than 2. Wave character of the evolving metrics and curvatures is illustrated and the nonlinear wave equations satisfied by the curvatures are derived.
Dissipation enhancing properties for a class of Hamiltonian flows with closed streamlines

Abstract:We study the evolution of a passive scalar subject to molecular diffusion and advected by an incompressible velocity field on a 2D bounded domain. The velocity field is $u = \nabla^\perp H$, where H is an autonomous Hamiltonian whose level sets are Jordan curves foliating the domain. We focus on the high Péclet number regime ($Pe := \nu^{-1} \gg 1$), where two distinct processes unfold on well separated time-scales: streamline averaging and standard diffusion. For a specific class of Hamiltonians with one non-degenerate elliptic point (including perturbed radial flows), we prove exponential convergence of the solution to its streamline average on a subdiffusive time-scale $T_\nu \ll \nu^{-1}$ ,up to a small correction related to the shape of the streamlines. The time-scale $T_\nu$ is determined by the behavior of the period function around the elliptic point. To establish this result, we introduce a model problem arising naturally from the difference between the solution and its streamline average. We use pseudospectral estimates to infer decay in the model problem, and, in fact, this analysis extends to a broader class of Hamiltonian flows. Finally, we perform an asymptotic expansion of the full solution, revealing that the leading terms consist of the streamline average and the solution of the model problem.

Abstract:The existence of dissipative solutions to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations was established in this paper. This notion was inspired by the concept of dissipative solutions to the incompressible Euler equations of Lions (\cite{Lions-1996}, Section 4.4). Our method is to recover such solutions by passing to the limits from approximated solutions, thanks to compactness argument.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for a damped Euler-Maxwell system with no ionic background. For smooth enough data satisfying suitable so-called dispersive conditions, we establish the global in time existence and uniqueness of a strong solution that decays uniformly in time. Our method is inspired by the works of D. Serre and M. Grassin dedicated to the compressible Euler system.

Abstract:We investigate a dissipative hyperbolic geometry flow in two space variables for which a new nonlinear wave equation is derived. Based on an energy method, the global existence of solutions to the dissipative hyperbolic geometry flow is established. Furthermore, the scalar curvature of the metric remains uniformly bounded. Moreover, under suitable assumptions, we establish the global existence of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem, and we show that the solution and its derivative decay to zero as the time tends to infinity. In addition, the scalar curvature of the solution metric converges to the one of the flat metric at an algebraic rate.

Abstract:Abstract We introduce the new concept of maximally dissipative solutions for a general class of isothermal GENERIC systems. Under certain assumptions, we show that maximally dissipative solutions are well-posed as long as the bigger class of dissipative solutions is non-empty. Applying this result to the Navier–Stokes and Euler equations, we infer global well-posedness of maximally dissipative solutions for these systems. The concept of maximally dissipative solutions coincides with the concept of weak solutions as long as the weak solutions inherits enough regularity to be unique.

Abstract:We show anomalous dissipation of scalars advected by weak solutions to the incompressible Euler equations with $C^{(\sfrac{1}{3})^-}$ regularity, for an arbitrary initial datum in $\dot H^1 (\T^3)$. This is the first rigorous derivation of zeroth law of scalar turbulence, where the scalar is advected by solution to an equation of hydrodynamics (unforced and deterministic). As a byproduct of our method, we provide a typicality statement for the drift, and recover certain desired properties of turbulence, including a lower bound on scalar variance commensurate with the Richardson pair dispersion hypothesis.

Abstract:We consider a model for an incompressible visoelastic fluid. It consists of the Navier–Stokes equations involving an elastic term in the stress tensor and a transport equation for the evolution of the deformation gradient. The novel feature of the paper is the introduction of the notion of a dissipative solution and its analysis. We show that dissipative solutions exist globally in time for arbitrary finite energy initial data and that a dissipative solution and a strong solution emanating from the same initial data coincide as long as the latter exists.
