Abstract:Background & Objectives: Although epilepsy is one of the most prevalent diseases, it is highly surrounded by stigmatization and negative attitudes toward epilepsy. Due to numerous incorrect or insufficient knowledge attributed to epilepsy, people have negative attitudes against the disease. This study was performed to examine the knowledge levels and attitudes about epilepsy of undergraduate students studying at the faculty of health sciences in Turkey. Methods: In the study, the epilepsy knowledge level and attitudes towards epilepsy and the person with epilepsy were evaluated in 1,019 students studying at the faculty of health sciences at Konya Selcuk University. The scales of epilepsy knowledge and attitudes towards epilepsy were transformed into an online form and sent to participants’ e-mail addresses. Results: Two hundred eighty (27.5%) students read scientific documents about epilepsy. Especially those who read textbooks and scientific articles/research articles had a higher level of knowledge (p = 0.002). The least well-known issue was related to the treatment of the disease. Although most students had a high level of epilepsy knowledge, they had negative attitudes especially toward dating and marriage with epileptic individuals. Female, clinical students, those who witnessed epileptic seizures, and those who had a higher level of knowledge about epilepsy had more positive attitudes towards epilepsy (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Negative attitudes towards epilepsy patients still exist among health science students in Turkey. Health sciences faculty education programs should be designed to increase the epilepsy awareness of students. Increasing the level of knowledge and awareness may lead to better attitudes.

The relationship between parental attitude toward childhood epilepsy and spiritual orientation

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between parental attitudes toward childhood epilepsy and spiritual orientations. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted online between May and July 2022 with 417 parents residing in the eastern part of Turkey. Data were collected using a descriptive information form, the Social Attitudes Scale toward Childhood Epilepsies, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS software package, employing descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics including independent samples t-test, ANOVA, multiple linear regression and correlation tests. Results: The Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies was calculated as 45.10 ± 7.81, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score was 89.88 ± 30.30 for parents with an average age of 36.64 ± 8.26. It was found statistically significant and high (p > 0.05) for parents who are female, have a higher level of education, and have previously received education about epilepsy regarding both the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. Conclusion: According to the findings of the research, parents' attitudes towards childhood epilepsy are positive, and their spiritual orientation levels are high. As parents' spiritual orientation levels increase, their positive attitudes towards childhood epilepsy also increase.
Beliefs and behaviors of patients' relatives towards childhood epilepsy in Turkey

Abstract:Background/aim: Beliefs about health-related problems throughout history are conveyed differently. Unsafe practices based on the superstitious beliefs of patients' relatives in situations requiring emergency medical attention, such as childhood epilepsy, or in the treatment of chronic diseases may be harmful to children's health. Our study aims to determine the superstitious beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours of the relatives of children with epilepsy. Methods: A total of 252 relatives of patients diagnosed with childhood epilepsy were included in this cross-sectional study conducted between 15 September and 15 October 2019. The data collection form contained questions about the sociodemographic information of the participants and their beliefs and behaviours towards the disease. The frequency (percentage) and mean were used to summarise the data obtained through the application of the questionnaire, and Student's t-test and correlation methods were used for group comparisons; p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: In the study, 77.0% of the participants were women, 77.4% were mothers, 43.3% were primary school graduates, 71.8% were unemployed, 77.7% had a low income, 52% lived within a distance of less than 1 km, and 157 of them used folk medicine. There was no relationship between education, income, distance from health institutions, occupation, use of traditional methods, and superstitions. A relationship was found between the relatives of patients with resistant epilepsy who stated that the cause of the disease was superstition (p = 0.036). There was also a correlation between the use of traditional methods (p = 0.006), presence of resistant epilepsy, indication of the cause of the disease as superstition (p = 0.004), and use of traditional methods (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Our study shows that approximately four-fifths of the participants had superstitious beliefs about epilepsy and exhibited attitudes and behaviours suggestive of neglect that are unsafe for children. Whilst the individual characteristics of the participants did not affect negative attitudes and behaviours, the presence of resistant epilepsy in their children increased the negative attitude tendency.

Abstract:Introduction: In addition to seizure care, it has been well-established that a holistic approach to the treatment of children with epilepsy that addresses the social, behavioral, and psychological dimensions also benefits their quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to investigate the patient and parental perceived stigma, seizure self-efficacy of children with epilepsy, and the relationship with quality of life in terms of sociodemographic and epilepsy-related factors. Method: The study group consisted of children, aged between 8 and 18 years and with a diagnosis of epilepsy of at least six months duration and their parents. Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), Child-Parent Stigma Scales, and the Seizure Self-Efficacy Scale for Children (SSES-C) were used for evaluation. Results: One hundred and forty-four children (mean age 12.6 ± 2.9 years) took part, of whom 48.6% were female. The mean Child Stigma Scale score was 1.77 ± 0.82, Parent Stigma Scale score 2.41 ± 0.75, SSES-C score was 3.37 ± 0.98, and PedsQL score was 72.8 ± 18.6 for children self-reports (CsR) and 73.2 ± 18.8 for parent proxy-reports. The intraclass correlation coefficient for parent-child PedsQL indicated a good level of agreement. There was a significant negative correlation between the Child Stigma Scale and the PedsQL-CsR scores. A significant positive correlation was identified between the SSES-C scores and the PedsQL-CsR scores. Discussion: Perceptions of stigma in children with epilepsy and their parents were high in this study population. Of note, the elevated stigma perception reported by the patients had a detrimental impact on seizure self-efficacy. This relationship may affect the children's QoL and further complicates epilepsy management in this patient group.
Impact of being a relative of a patient with epilepsy on the association of attitudes toward epilepsy and disease knowledge levels

Abstract:Objective: The social prognosis for individuals with epilepsy is often poorer than their clinical prognosis, highlighting the significant influence of social factors on the progression of the disease. Relatives of patients with epilepsy (RPEs) generally have more positive attitudes towards epilepsy compared to the general population. This study aimed to examine the effect of being an RPE on the relationship between attitudes toward epilepsy and levels of disease knowledge. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study included 217 adult participants, comprising 93 RPEs and 124 controls (non-RPEs), selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire that included sections on socio-demographic characteristics, the Epilepsy Knowledge Scale, and the Public Attitudes Toward Epilepsy (PATE) Scale. Path analysis was conducted using the Maximum Likelihood method. Due to the non-normal distribution of exogenous variables, the robust Huber/White/sandwich estimator method was used to calculate confidence intervals and fit indices. Results: The mean age of the participants was 34.7 ± 11.5 years, with 128 (59.0 %) being female. RPEs scored an average of 26.8 ± 9.9 on the PATE Scale, which was significantly lower than the average score of 29.7 ± 11.0 for non-RPEs (p = 0.047). Path analysis indicated that being an RPE indirectly fosters a positive attitude through increased knowledge levels. While the direct effect of being an RPE on attitudes was not statistically significant, the indirect effect mediated by knowledge was significant. Significance: This study highlights that the level of knowledge about epilepsy, a key predictor of positive attitudes, remains important even among RPEs. In kinship contexts where neurobiological and psychosocial factors are at play, the primary determinant of attitudes toward epilepsy is still the level of knowledge about the condition. Consequently, focusing on increasing knowledge about epilepsy should be the main strategy to promote positive attitudes, providing a more promising avenue for future research and interventions.

Abstract:Purpose: Health-seeking behaviors of individuals who have epilepsy might affect the treatment of the disease, recovery process, and self-care activities. The present study was conducted to determine the health-seeking behaviors of individuals who have epilepsy. Materials and methods: The present study was conducted in a descriptive and cross-sectional design with 190 epilepsy patients who applied to the Neurology Clinic in the north and east of Turkey between April 2023 and January 2024. The data of the study were collected by using the Introductory Data Form, Health-Seeking Behavior Scale (HSBS). The IBM SPSS 27 software, variance analysis, Tamhane T2, ANOVA Test, Tukey Test, and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to evaluate the study data. Results: The mean score of the online health-seeking behavior sub-dimension of the Health-Seeking Behavior Scale of the individuals who had epilepsy was found to be 13.32 ± 5.40, the mean score of the professional health-seeking behavior sub-dimension was 9.92 ± 2.75, and the mean score of the traditional health-seeking behavior sub-dimension was 8.46 ± 3.29. No significant differences were detected between individuals' sex, seizure types, and health-seeking behaviors, and a significant difference was detected between marital status, educational status, place of residence, occupation, income level, seizure frequency, and medication use status and health-seeking behaviors (p < 0.05). According to the multiple linear regression analysis that was used to examine the effects of sociodemographic characteristics of individuals with epilepsy on health seeking behavior scale scores, it was found that sociodemographic characteristics such as educational status, place of residence, marital status, and age significantly affected online, professional, and traditional health seeking behavior scores. Conclusion: In conclusion, it was found in the present study that the online health-seeking behavior of the individuals who had epilepsy was higher than other health-seeking behaviors. The health-seeking behaviors of patients were affected by sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., marital status, educational status, place of residence, occupation, income level, seizure frequency, and medication use). It is of great importance to conduct larger future studies on individuals who have epilepsy and are seeking traditional treatment for epileptic seizures because the sources from which health information is obtained might affect the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery processes.
The Relationship Between Health Literacy and Diabetes Self-Efficacy and Foot Self-Care in Type II Diabetics

Abstract:This study was conducted to determine the effect of health literacy on diabetes self-efficacy and foot self-care in type II diabetics. This descriptive correlational study was conducted with 187 people. The research was conducted between 01 June 2021 and 31 December 2021 in a province located in the southeastern region of Turkey. Non-probability purposive sampling was used as the sampling method. An introductory information form, and the Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32 (THLS-32), Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale and Diabetes Foot Self-Care Behavior Scale (DFSBS) were used in the study. Data were evaluated with frequency, percentage, mean, and correlation analyses using SPSS 25 software. It was determined that the participants had a low education level and were of advanced age, and that the feet of most of the patients were not examined and there were no wounds on their feet. The health literacy level of 57.8% of the participants was found to be insufficient. The mean THLS-32 score was 22.50 ± 10.65, the Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale mean score was 72.83 ± 11.84, and the Diabetes Foot Self-Care Behavior Scale mean score was 22.60 ± 5.44. It was determined that there was a relationship between the THLS-32 and Diabetes Self-Efficacy score of those with type II diabetes, and that as health literacy increased, diabetes self-efficacy increased (p < 0.05). It was determined that the health literacy level was insufficient, whereas diabetes self-efficacy and foot self-care were at a good level. It was found that as health literacy increased, self-efficacy increased. Information on health literacy is effective in coping with the disease. For this reason, information on health literacy should be given from an early age.

Abstract:Background: Health literacy has a measure of capacity to access, understand, assess, and apply health information in individuals’ decision-making processes to maintain and improve life-quality quality of life. Research is a descriptive study aiming to determine the health literacy level of medical secretary’ students who are health professionals and the influencing factors of health literacy in the future. Method: The research was conducted between April 30 and June 1, 2018, and the study group consisted of 55 medical secretary students who study in Ankara University Vocational School of Health in Turkey. The participants were given the questionnaire which was composed of 3 sections (socio-demographic information, health status, and the Health Literacy Survey-European Union/HLS-EU scale) and 70 questions used for data collection purposes. Results: The average age of the group was 21.4±4.1. The average score of participants’ general health literacy index was calculated as 33.9±7.42 (n=55). Approximately 70% of participants (n=55) were found to have adequate health literacy. Conclusions: It is very important that the medical secretaries working as secretarial and patient orientation personnel in the health sector are health literate in terms of their own health and health service quality. Health literacy can't be considered independent of the general literacy level. Hence, in the lifelong learning process, individuals need to be supported in school and work life.
Public Perception of Epilepsy in Rural Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces: A Quantitative Study on Knowledge, Awareness, and Attitudes

Abstract:Although epilepsy is a common non-communicable neurological disease, lack of knowledge, awareness, and negative attitudes of it abound. This study aimed to explore public awareness, knowledge, and attitudes towards epilepsy and people living with epilepsy (PLWE). RaoSoft software was used to calculate the sample size, and 4290 respondents were included. The researchers employed a non-experimental quantitative survey method. Data were collected using a questionnaire, and descriptive and regression analyses were performed. Most respondents had a secondary education without grade 12 (45.2%); 79.6% were unemployed in Limpopo and 70.5% in Mpumalanga. This study had a 95.3% response rate. Both provinces displayed low knowledge of epilepsy (48.2%; mean = 5.99; SD = 2.38). Only 41% demonstrated awareness, and 56.7% had a positive attitude towards epilepsy (mean= 4.67; SD = 1.90). The findings revealed positive correlations between demographic factors and overall knowledge, awareness, and attitude. In addition, demographic factors, such as level of education and employment status, may be associated with an individual’s knowledge, awareness, and attitudes towards epilepsy. This study concluded that, despite individuals’ awareness of epilepsy, their levels of knowledge were low, and many (43.3%) had a negative attitude regarding the disease. In the two provinces investigated, the study highlighted the need for epilepsy education to empower the public and improve the quality of life of PLWE and their families.

Abstract:Objective The aim of study was to investigate sleep habits, quality of life (QoL), and the relationship between them in children with epilepsy. Methods In this cross-sectional study, children aged 2-18 years being followed up for epilepsy were assessed using the Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). Pearson or Spearman correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between normally distributed and non-normally distributed variables, respectively. Linear regression analysis was used to examine independent variables associated with PedsQL total scale score. Level of significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results The study included 112 children with a mean age of 10.5±4.4 years (51.8% female). The frequency of poor sleep habits was 96.4%. The mean CSHQ total sleep score was 49.3±5.9. On the PedsQL, the mean total scores were 74±15.6 according to the children's self-assessment and 75.8±14.8 according to parental evaluation. There was a good level of agreement between children's and parents' PedsQL total, physical health, and psychosocial health scores (p<0.001). Correlation analysis between QoL and sleep parameters revealed negative correlations between total sleep score and self-assessed PedsQL total scale, physical health, and psychosocial health scores (p<0.05) and parent-assessed PedsQL total scale and psychosocial health scores (p<0.05). The results of linear regression analysis indicated that the factors most significantly associated with lower QoL were high CSHQ total sleep score and exclusively daytime seizures (p<0.001). Significance It found children with epilepsy had poor sleep habits, low QoL, poor sleep habits have a negative impact on QoL.

Marriage and childbearing in patients with epilepsy in Turkey

Abstract:Introduction: For epilepsy, a common neurological disorder, brings psychosocial challenges like stigma, employment difficulties, and barriers to marriage and childbearing. Stigma often stems from misconceptions and societal beliefs, particularly in less developed regions like Turkey. However, research on the marital and childbearing experiences of epilepsy patients in such settings is limited. We aimed to research the marriage and childbearing behaviors of men and women with epilepsy. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 215 adult epilepsy patients at Antalya Training and Research Hospital between 2019 and 2022. Patients were asked questions about marriage and having children on prepared questionnaires. Result: The gender distribution of the 215 patients included in the study was revealed to be 62.3% (134) females and 37.7% (81) males. 71.6% of patients were married, and 12.7% had no children. 33.3% of these patients stated that they did not desire children because of the disease. A statistically significant correlation was observed between the duration of the disease and being unmarried. A significant correlation was observed between age at disease onset and number of children. Conclusion: Our study revealed the effects of individuals with epilepsy on marriage and childbearing, and as we know, it is the first study conducted in Turkey on childbearing attitudes in individuals with epilepsy. Despite medical and social developments, epilepsy is still one of the most stigmatized diseases, and the disease has considerable negative effects on marriage and fertility. Our study supported the findings of a small number of previous similar studies on this subject and additionally showed that the likelihood of having children decreased in patients using multiple ASM, and on the other hand, it showed that marriage positively affected patients in terms of social support.

The effect of health literacy on health behaviors in a sample of Turkish adolescents

Abstract:Purpose Health literacy is a strong factor in the health outcomes and behaviors of adolescents. This study was conducted to examine the health literacy levels of adolescents, their health behaviors, and the effect of health literacy on health behaviors. Design and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 649 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18. Data were collected using the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile II (ALP-R2) and the Health Literacy Scale for School-Age Children (HLSAC). A multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the effects of health literacy on health behaviors and the factors associated with health behaviors. Results The mean total ALP-R2 score of the participants was 114.35 ± 17.48, and their mean HLSAC score was 28.95 ± 5.79. Among the participants, 26% had low health literacy, 61.9% had moderate health literacy, and 12% had high health literacy. The regression analysis revealed that the health literacy levels of the participants significantly predicted all dimensions of health behaviors and total health behaviors ( p < 0.001). The health literacy levels of the participants, the community where the adolescent lived, their participation in social activities, family relationships, friend relationships, and health perceptions significantly predicted their total health behaviors (R 2 = 0.347; p < 0.001). Conclusions The health literacy levels and health behaviors of adolescents were found to be moderate, and their health behaviors increased as their levels of health literacy increased. The results showed that the health literacy and health behaviors of adolescents need to be improved. Implications for practice Nurses should provide training to increase the healthy lifestyle behaviors and health literacy of adolescents.

Abstract:Purpose: E-health illiteracy has disadvantages including misevaluation of medical information displayed on the internet. Both effective self care management and e-health literacy are important terms in order to control of the chronic diseases. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between e-health literacy and the self-care management of patients with Type-2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: The type of the study is descriptive. A questionnaire was applied to individuals who have been diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes in the endocrine policlinic of the internal medicine clinic of a tertiary state hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. The sample size was calculated as 384 by accepting the adequate e-health literacy rate among Type-2 diabetes patients as 50%, the margin of error 5%, and the confidence level as 95%. In addition to sociodemographical questions; our questionnaire contains two scales: Self-Care Management Protection scale and the E-health Literacy Scale. Number (n) and percentage (%) values were used in the expression of descriptive data. Mean, standard deviation, median and minimum, maximum values were given. For data comparison; Mann-Whitney U test was used for non-normally distributed variables. The Spearman correlation used to measure the linear relation between two numeric variables. Significance level has been accepted as p<0.05. Results: Totally 330 patients were included our study by a participation rate of 85.9 %. The mean age of the participants was 57.74±13.83 and 52.4% were female. A positive correlation was observed between scores of e-health literacy scale and self-care management scale (r=0.235, p<0.001) and self- protection subscale of self-care management scale (r= 0.345, p<0.001). A negative correlation exists between age and e-health literacy (r= -0.419, p<0.001). Conclusions: The results support the claim that individuals with a higher e-health literacy can better able to control their disease through self- management.

Epilepsy knowledge scale for parents (EKS-P): Development and psychometric evaluation in Turkish sample

Abstract:Background: Epilepsy is the most prevalent chronic neurological condition in childhood, affecting approximately 0.5%-1% of children worldwide. Objective: This study aimed to (1) develop an "Epilepsy Knowledge Scale for Parents", (2) evaluate the content validity of the scale, and (3) assess its psychometric properties. Methods: This methodological study was conducted in a tertiary hospital's pediatric neurology outpatient clinic in Turkey. The study comprised two stages involving 500 parents of children with epilepsy. The first stage included validity and reliability analyses, while the second stage involved the calculation of the scale scoring. Results: Exploratory Factor Analysis for the preliminary scale development with 36 items based on expert opinions yielded 29 items and three dimensions. The factors explained 62.83% of the total variance, and the scale exhibited high reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.885). Confirmatory Factor Analysis, it was determined that the fit indices were at acceptable (CFI = 0.957, NFI = 0.932) or good level (χ2/df = 2.32, RMSEA = 0.048, GFI = 0.951). Consequently, a final structure comprising 29 items and three dimensions was obtained. The scale score's cutoff value was set at 15.50 points, with scores above this value indicating diagnostic value with 55.6% sensitivity and 80.2% specificity. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that the "Epilepsy Knowledge Scale for Parents (EKS-P)", designed to assess parents' knowledge of epilepsy, is a reliable and valid measurement tool for the Turkish population. Implications for practice: This scale (EKS-P) developed for parents is recommended to be used in clinical settings and both experimental and non-experimental research.

Abstract:Introduction: The analysis of the representations of the health of their students by teachers is key to the understanding of the attitudes and behaviors that, in general, take place inside the school community and the educational processes. In fact, social attitudes by teachers and individual within the school environment are often the result of simple categorization and stereotypes, which hinder the process of evolutionary change. Aims: On these premises it was necessary to investigate the level of knowledge of the epilepsy syndrome, the representations by a group of teachers of the quality of life of people with epilepsy and the representations of the interpersonal relationships between students with epilepsy and their classmates. Methodology: We used an ad hoc questionnaire, with 33 multiple choice answers, focusing on these variables: work seniority, experience with epileptic students, special education or main teacher. Participants: The sample consisted of 113 female teachers with a mean age of 44.4. Results: There aren't significant differences between the answers of special education and main teachers: a) teachers with work seniority > 11 years showed a more than adequate knowledge of information about epilepsy. Moreover, in case of seizure in the classroom, first aid is to call an ambulance rather than administering rescue drugs; b) teachers, who have had a real experience, represent the epileptic student as more limited in the possibilities of getting married, having children, finding a job, and practising a sport; c) teachers, who have had a student with epilepsy don't report interpersonal relationships with his/her classmates as being difficult. Moreover, they claim to have inadequate knowledge of the educational strategies needed to integrate the epileptic student with his/her classmates; d) there are some different answers for primary school teachers and for secondary school teachers. Conclusions: Teachers demonstrate inaccurate information about epilepsy, its impact in educational contexts and management of seizures in the classroom. Also, critical areas have emerged indicating efforts should focus on education, sharing the role of teacher, awareness and integration in the class group.
Association of electronic health literacy with health‐promoting behaviours in adolescents

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Aim</h3><p>This study aimed to determine the electronic health (e‐health) literacy level of high school students and its relationship with their health‐promoting behaviours.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>This was a cross‐sectional study conducted between April and May 2018. The study sample consisted of 409 students, who were aged between 14 and 19 years old, in three high schools located in the city centre of Denizli. Multiple regression analyses were performed to examine the predictive variables for six dimensions of health‐promoting behaviours.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>In this study, the mean (SD) e‐health literacy score of 27.89 (6.19) was slightly above moderate level. e‐Health literacy was found to significantly predict all six dimensions of health‐promoting behaviours positively, that is, e‐health literacy was determined to predict the dimensions of nutritional behaviours (<i>β</i> = 0.64, <i>P</i> < 0.001), life appreciation (<i>β</i> = 0.55, <i>P</i> < 0.001), social support (<i>β</i> = 0.72, <i>P</i> < 0.001), exercise (<i>β</i> = 0.36, <i>P</i> < 0.001), stress management (<i>β</i> = −0.22, <i>P</i> < 0.001) and health responsibility (<i>β</i> = 0.68, <i>P</i> < 0.001). </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusion</h3><p>With e‐health literacy significantly predictive of health‐promoting behaviours, nurses are recommended to consider the e‐health literacy levels of adolescents in the health‐promoting programs they design.</p></section>

Abstract:Background: Health literacy, defined as the ability to obtain, understand, evaluate, and apply health information with knowledge, motivation, and skills, is crucial for maintaining and improving quality of life. Despite the availability of health information, limited health literacy is linked to health disparities, inadequate self-management of chronic diseases, and poorer health outcomes. Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the health literacy of pregnant women who visit the Perinatology Outpatient Clinic for follow-up care. It seeks to identify gaps in knowledge and understanding that may impede effective healthcare delivery and inform targeted health education and public awareness programs to enhance health literacy. Methods: This prospective survey study included 210 pregnant women aged 18 to 40 years attending the Perinatology Outpatient Clinic at Giresun Obstetrics and Gynecology Training and Research Hospital, Turkey. Participants completed a questionnaire on health literacy, sociodemographics, and basic health status via Google Forms (Google Inc., Mountain View, CA, USA). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics version 26.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA), employing tests such as Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Student's t-test, ANOVA, Spearman, and Pearson correlation, and multivariate linear regression analysis. Results: The mean age of participants was 29.97±5.44 years, with a mean health literacy score of 29.89±7.05. Education level and living place significantly influenced health literacy scores, with higher scores among those with higher education and urban living (p = 0.014 and p = 0.038, respectively). Economic status also significantly impacted health literacy, with lower scores among those with poor economic status (p<0.001). Health literacy scores were higher among those receiving health information from healthcare professionals (p = 0.006) and lower among those finding medical information from doctors insufficient (p = 0.008). Conclusion: Health literacy is significantly influenced by education level, living place, and economic status. The study emphasizes the necessity of focused health education initiatives, especially for individuals with lower educational attainment and those residing in rural regions. Improving health literacy via efficient communication from medical professionals can benefit expectant mothers and their unborn children by lowering medical expenses and improving health outcomes.

Abstract:There is a lack of robust information for research assessing the association of various socio-demographic factors and digital technology use in the e-Health context in Turkey among the general population. The aim of the study was thus to examine the sociodemographic determinants of e-Health literacy in the general population in Istanbul, Turkey. The study sample consisted of 806 individuals aged 15 and over who participated in a cross-sectional survey conducted between October 2019 and February 2020. ed data included age, gender, education level, income, occupation type, Internet use, self-perceived health status, regular medication usage, and visits to healthcare professionals. The e-Health Literacy Scale was used to measure e-Health literacy. This study indicated that the e-Health literacy of the general population was at a medium level and most variables reflecting the sociodemographic and economic status of the individuals were significantly associated with e-Health scores.

Abstract:Background: Caregivers' knowledge and attitudes influence help-seeking behavior and treatment decisions of patients with epilepsy, which in turn significantly impacts epilepsy care. In Ethiopia, epilepsy is often misunderstood, associated with misconceptions and accompanied by persistent negative attitudes. The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of caregivers of children with epilepsy. Methods: We conducted a hospital-based survey at the Yekatit 12 Hospital Pediatric Neurology Clinic, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, between May and July 2022. We invited caregivers of children with epilepsy taking one or more daily anti-seizure medications to participate. Caregivers were invited to complete a structured questionnaire with guidance from a trained nurse to estimate knowledge and attitudes towards epilepsy and its treatment. Knowledge and attitudes were categorized as "good" and "favorable" (correct answers to ≥ 50% of questions) or "bad" and "unfavorable" (< 50% correct answers), respectively. Attitudes towards standard care versus non-standard (e.g., spiritual) care were also estimated. Results: A total of 120 caregivers completed the questionnaire. Many caregivers were familiar with the term 'epilepsy', with more than half (51.7%) having heard or read about it previously. The reported causes of epilepsy varied, with birth injury being the most common cause (44 out of 120 caregivers). Notably, there was association between the caregiver's gender and their knowledge score, with a p-value = 0.05. Caregivers exposed to information about epilepsy through hearing or reading demonstrated significantly higher levels of knowledge, with a p-value < 0.001. Additionally, knowing someone with epilepsy other than the index child was significantly associated with higher knowledge scores (p-value < 0.001). The study also revealed negative attitudes toward epilepsy: for example, 56.7% of surveyed caregivers believed it is unlikely that a child with epilepsy has normal cognitive abilities and 39.1% believed they should never be allowed to attend regular school. Additionally, a high proportion of caregivers (70%) sought alternative treatments (e.g., spiritual help) alongside standard medical care. Conclusions: A significant knowledge gap was identified among caregivers, revealing prevalent misconceptions and negative attitudes. Improving epilepsy awareness, attitudes, and practices among caregivers will potentially contribute to overall improved quality of life for children with epilepsy.

Abstract:Background The study aimed to investigate the effect of health literacy and patient activation on health‐seeking behaviour. In addition, the role of general health status and age variables in this effect was also addressed. Methods The research using quantitative methods is cross‐sectional. The participant information form, health literacy scale, patient activation scale and health‐seeking behaviour scale were used in the study. In addition to descriptive analyses, difference analysis, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used in the study. The study participants consisted of 1045 adult individuals living in Turkey. Results According to the correlation analysis results, it was determined that health literacy and patient activation were significantly positively associated with health‐seeking behaviour. According to multiple linear regression analysis, the independent variables of health literacy, patient activation, age and general health status significantly affected health‐seeking behaviour. Accordingly, patient activation and general health status positively affect health‐seeking behaviour, while health literacy and age have a negative effect. Conclusion To positively improve individuals' health‐seeking behaviours, it is thought that it would be appropriate to focus on individuals whose general health status is not good, who are not actively involved in their treatment, who have high health literacy and who are elderly. Patient or Public Contribution Since the research examines the effect of patient activation and health literacy on health‐seeking behaviour, it is of great importance for the research that the public and patients are included in the study from the design of the research to the presentation of the findings.
