Abstract:Indium is a critical metal in liquid-crystal displays and solar panels, and its concentration in Earth's crust is down to n×10 ppb, but it can be concentrated in sulfide up to thousands of times. Although indium isotopes have the potential for better understanding the behavior of indium in various geological processes, studies on indium isotopes for terrestrial samples are limited. Here, we developed a new method for indium purification and present a high-precision isotope analytical method of chemically different standards. A one-column method was employed to separate indium from matrix with indium recovery at 98±2%. We also analyzed indium and its isotope composition during desorbing indium from the column and found that the minimum indium recovery should be higher than 93.8%. By comparing the precision and accuracy of indium isotope data, we found that Ag-doping method is better than SSB method for correction of instrumental fractionation with indium uptake concentration down to 1 ppb. To ensure the accuracy of indium isotope analysis, the concentration match between the sample and standard should be lower than ±30%. Elemental doping shows that Te, Sb, Pb, and Cu have no impact on indium isotope analyzing when [X]/In ratios varying from 0.1 to 1; however, minor Cd and Sn in samples could significantly affect the accuracy of indium isotope analysis with Cd/In and Sn/In ratios down to 0.0005 and 0.1, respectively. It is thus important to monitor Cd and Sn signals during indium isotope analyzing. The four international standards (BCR-2, basalt; J-Zn-1, sulfide; NIST-2711a, soil; OU-3, granite) and three in-house igneous rocks, purified using our method, have Cd and Sn signals at negligible level during indium isotope analyzing, demonstrating that the method is reliable and can be used for chemically different terrestrial samples.
