Abstract:Biochar has been increasingly applied in constructed wetlands (CWs) to remove heavy metals (HMs). Nevertheless, there is little information on the performance and mechanism of biochar amended CWs (BC-CWs) for HMs removal. This study therefore used cadmium (Cd) as the target HM and added biochar into different lacation of CWs to monitor physicochemical parameters, plant’ physiological responses, substrate accumulation, and microbial metabolites and community. Results showed in comparison with the biochar-free CW (as CWC), a maximum 99.7% removal of Cd was achieved in the BC-CWs associated with a stable physicochemical parameters. Mechanism exploration indicates that biochar claimed preferentially on the available Cd2+ and significantly accumulated Fe/Mn oxides-bond (increased by 6.2–9.3 mg/kg) and exchangeable (increased by 1.7–5.1 mg/kg) fraction of Cd. Moreover, biochar alleviated the lipid peroxidation (decreased by 36.4%) of plants and induced a better growth status. In addition, extracellular polymeric substances were promoted in BC-CWs (increased by 376.9-396.8 mg/L) than the CWC and microbial communities realized more turnover of N and C cycles through interspecific positive connectivity. In summary, this study explored comprehensively the performance and mechanism of BC-CWs for treating Cd-polluted water and provides a promising approach to promote the plant-microbe-substrate synergies under HM toxicity.
