Abstract:The electron-rich germylene LGa(μ–Cl)GeAr Mes ( 1) (L = CH[C(Me)N(Dipp)] 2 , Dipp = 2,6- i Pr 2 C 6 H 3 , Ar Mes = 2,6-Mes 2 C 6 H 3 , Mes = 2,4,6-Me 3 C 6 H 2 ) shows promising potential in the σ-bond activation of unpolar molecules as is shown in oxidative addition reactions with H 2 and P 4 , yielding L(Cl)GaGe(H) 2 Ar Mes ( 2) and L(Cl)Ga(P 4 )GeAr Mes ( 3) . Compounds 2 and 3 were characterised spectroscopically ( 1 H, 13 C{ 1 H}, ( 31 P{ 1 H}), IR) and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD).

σ,π-Conjugated Bis(germylene) Adducts with NHC and CAACs

Abstract:Heavier tetrylenes attract attention for their potential in synthesis, catalysis and small molecule activation. The coordination by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) results in substantial structural and electronic differences although typically only one of these yields stable derivatives for one and the same tetrylene. We now report both NHC- and CAAC-coordination to a bridged bis(germylene) motif. The NHC-coordinated bis(germylene) exhibits pyramidal germanium centers with lone pairs of electrons, while with CAAC an unprecedented stable bis(germene) with two Ge=C bonds is isolated. Spectroscopic and crystallographic evidence as well as DFT calculations confirm the effects of σ,π-conjugation between the two germanium centers in both cases. The coordination of NHC is reversible as the reaction with BPh3 liberates the transient bis(germylene) and thus provides an alternative low-temperature route towards polymers with Ge=Ge bonds.

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic germylene LGe [L = CH{(C=CH2)(CMe)(N(aryl))(2)}, aryl = 2,6-' Pr2C6H3] 1reacts with HN(C(,175)2 solely to give the 1,4-addition product L'GeN(C6F5)(2) 2(L ' = CH(CMe)(2)[N(aryl)](2)) which contains a Ge(II)-N(C6F5)(2) moiety. In contrast, HN(SiMe3)(2) does not add to 1 but induces isomeriza lion of 1 to generate the first N(aryl)H-substituted, heteroaroma tic azagermabenzen-1-ylidene intermediate. The latter readily undergoes 1,4-addition to a second equivalent of 1 to form the unprecedented bis(germylene) 3, which contains two- and three-coordinate Ge(II) centers. The isomerization process and the nature of the six A-electron aromatic character of the C4NGe heterocycle in 2 are explored and supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract:Me NHC substituted germaborenium cation 2 was synthesized directly in reaction of bromo-substituted germaborene 1b with Me NHC. The adamantyl isonitrile substituted germaborenium cation 4 was obtained stepwise: substitution of the chloride atom against adamantyl isonitrile at the B–Cl unit in 1a , simultaneous migration of the chloride to the germanium atom followed by chloride abstraction using Na[BAr F 4 ] gives the germaborenium cation 4 . Substitution of the bromide atom in 1b against carbon monoxide followed by bromide abstraction using Ag[Al(O t Bu F ) 4 ] leads to compound 6 exhibiting a BC double bond substituted at the boron atom by a germylium cation. Treating the germaborene [GeB–Ph] ( 1c ) with selenium, a cycloaddition product 7 was characterised featuring a GeBSe heterocycle. Carbon dioxide reacts with 1b to give a four membered ring molecule 8 as the product of a B–C and Ge–O bond formation. In reaction of 1b with dimethylbutadiene, a product 9 of a [2 + 4] cycloaddition was isolated. Transition metal fragments [Fe(CO) 4 ( 10 ), CuBr ( 11 ), AuCl ( 12 )] show coordination at the germaborene double bond. Molecular structures of the germaborene coordination compounds 10–12 are presented and the ligand properties are discussed. After treating the germaborene [GeB–Br] ( 1b ) with [Cp*Al] 4 , insertion of a Cp*Al moiety into the B–Br bond was found ( 13 ).

Abstract:Reaction of a nucleophilic germylene Ge[CH(SiMe3)2]2 with the phosphanyl phosphaketene [{(H2C)(NDipp)}2P]PCO induces decarbonylation to form a phosphanyl phosphagermene [{(H2C)(NDipp)}2P]P=Ge[CH(SiMe3)2]2 (1; Dipp = 2,6‐diisopropyl‐phenyl). Addition of CO2 or MeCN to 1 results in [3+2]‐cycloaddition reactions to afford five‐membered heterocycles. This mode of reactivity is reminiscent of that observed for frustrated Lewis pairs, with the pendant phosphanyl group acting as a base and the germanium center as a Lewis acid. Contrastingly, 1,2‐addition across the P=Ge bond was observed when using ammonia, small primary amines (NH2nPr, NH2iPr), or metal complexes (e.g. Au(PPh3)Cl and ZnEt2). These latter reactions allow for the one‐step synthesis of metal phosphide complexes.

Abstract:The germylone dimNHCGe (5, dimNHC = diimino N‐heterocyclic carbene) undergoes a [2+2] cycloaddition with isocyanates RNCO (R = 4‐tolyl or 3,5‐xylyl) to furnish novel alkyl carboxamido germylenes 6 (R=4‐tolyl) and 7 (R= 3,5‐xylyl), featuring a C‐C bond between the former carbene carbon and the isocyanate moiety. Heating a mixture of 7 with 4‐tolyl isocyanate to 100 °C results in isocyanate metathesis, demonstrating reversible C‐C bond formation on the reduced germanium compound. DFT calculations suggest that this process occurs via the reductive dissociation of isocyanate from 8 that regenerates the parent Ge(0) compound 5.

Abstract:Introducing phospha-bicyclohexene (BCH)-germylenes (BCHGe's) as a novel, multifunctional compound class: the title compounds 15-18 are obtained from simple salt metathesis reactions of dipotassium germacyclopentadienediides K2[1] with phosphorusdichlorides. The BCHGe's 15-18 are stabilized by homoconjugation of the germanium(ii) centre with the remote C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond. Despite substantial thermodynamic stabilization, phospha-BCHGe's are reactive and undergo a reductive elimination of elemental germanium to give the corresponding phospholes. The elimination is a nucleophilic, bimolecular process and is prevented by large substituents. The reaction of phospha-BCHGe's with small electrophiles gives the corresponding phosphonium salts. Oxidation with chalcogens takes place at both the germanium and the phosphorus atom, and after elimination of germanium chalcogenides the corresponding phosphole chalcogenides were isolated. The introduced germylenes exhibit strong nucleophilic but also non-neglectable electrophilic properties.

Abstract:Dedicated to Emeritus Professor Takayuki Kawashima on the occasion of his 77 th birthday. We have been interested in the differences between the properties of low-coordinated carbon compounds and their heavier homologues based on elements of group 14, e.g., Si and Ge. Fundamental research on the synthesis and characterization of divalent and multiply bonded compounds of heavier group 14 elements has led to a variety of isolated low-coordinated species of heavier group 14 elements that can replace transition metals in small-molecule transformations. We have focused on low-coordinated germanium compounds with double or triple bonds between germanium atoms, as well as germanium-containing aromatic compounds. Once isolated, the reactivity of these low-coordinated germanium compounds was examined with regard to small-molecule activation. Abstract:The methylgermylene species (HGeCH3 ; X1 A') has been synthesized via the bimolecular gas phase reaction of ground state methylidyne radicals (CH) with germane (GeH4 ) under single collision conditions in crossed molecular beams experiments. Augmented by electronic structure calculations, this elementary reaction was found to proceed through barrierless insertion of the methylidyne radical in one of the four germanium-hydrogen bonds on the doublet potential energy surface yielding the germylmethyl (CH2 GeH3 ; X2 A') collision complex. This insertion is followed by a hydrogen shift from germanium to carbon and unimolecular decomposition of the methylgermyl (GeH2 CH3 ; X2 A') intermediate by atomic hydrogen elimination leading to singlet methylgermylene (HGeCH3 ; X1 A'). Our investigation provides a glimpse at the largely unknown reaction dynamics and isomerization processes of the carbon-germanium system, which are quite distinct from those of the isovalent carbon system thus providing insights into the intriguing chemical bonding of organo germanium species on the most fundamental, microscopic level.

Abstract:The syntheses of two linear oligogermanes, Ph3GeGePh2GePh2GePh2H and Ge5Ph12, were achieved using a hydrogermolysis reaction starting with HPh2GeGePh2GePh2H. The preparation of the hydride-terminated tetragermane indicates that selectivity is possible using the hydrogermolysis reaction, which had not been observed previously. The structures of both of these compounds were determined, and they were also characterized by UV/visible spectroscopy and electrochemical methods (CV and DPV). The pentagermane Ge5Ph12 exhibits four irreversible oxidation waves in both its CV and DPV, as was observed for other aryl-substituted oligogermanes. The successful synthesis of the neopentane analogue (Ph3Ge)(4)Ge was also achieved by starting from GeH4 and Ph3GeCH2CN. This material was structurally characterized; the structure of (Ph3Ge)(4)Ge is highly sterically congested and contains long Ge-Ge single-bond distances that average 2.497(6) angstrom and exhibits an nearly idealized tetrahedral geometry at the central germanium atom with an average Ge-Ge-Ge bond angle of 109.49(2)degrees. The UV/visible spectrum of (Ph3Ge)(4)Ge exhibits a broad absorbance maximum centered at 250 nm, and DFT calculations indicate that this compound has a stabilized HOMO at -6.223 eV and a large HOMO-LUMO gap relative to those in other branched oligogermanes.

Abstract:The mechanisms for the reactions of a tungsten-germylyne complex with one or two molecules of alcohols and arylaldehydes have been investigated with the aid of density functional theory (DFT). The calculation results show that a germylyne complex 1a [Cp*(CO)(2)WGeC(SiH3)(3)] (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) reacts with only one molecule of alcohol to give hydrido(alkoxygermylene) complexes through coordination of the alcohol oxygen atom to the electron-deficient germylyne germanium atom followed by hydrogen-atom transfer from the oxygen atom to the tungsten atom, whereas 1a reacts with two molecules of arylaldehydes consecutively to lead to base-stabilized alkoxy(germylene) complexes through C-H bond activation followed by hydrogermylation. In addition, two diastereomers can be formed from the reaction of a tungsten-germylyne complex with benzaldehyde. The interconversion of two diastereomers is involved in the consecutive decoordination of the C(O)Ph ligand, rotation of the germylene ligand, and recoordination of the C(O)Ph ligand to the germanium center. Our calculations are consistent with experimental observations and could provide new insights into the reactivity of the germylyne complex.

Abstract:The field of organogermanium in chemistry has recently attracted attention. Thanks to the inherent features of germanium (Ge), introducing Ge‐based substituents into organic frameworks has enhanced bioactivity and optoelectronic properties of molecules. Herein, the synthesis of multi‐functionalized organogermaniums using Ge(II) salts is reported. The germacycles having an allylboron moiety, which is derived from the (4+1) cycloadditions of the butadienes bearing a boronic ester moiety with Ge(II) salts, can be applied to further allylboration of aldehydes with perfect diastereoselectivity. The obtained allylated adducts enable access to π‐extended organogermaniums with the retention of the stereocenters.

Abstract:Phosphaalkynes are the heavier congener of nitriles which feature a polarized Cδ−≡Pδ+ triple bond. Since the isolation of the first phosphaalkyne in 1981, these compounds have become important ligands for transition metals and valuable building blocks in synthetic chemistry. The reported reactivity with germylenes is rare, to expand this chemistry, we studied the reactivity of the recently developed gallium‐substituted germylene 1 ([LPhGe–Ga(Cl)LBDI] (LPh = PhC(NtBu)2; LBDI = [{2,6‐iPr2C6H3NCMe}2CH]) with tBuC≡P. Already at room temperature, insertion of the phosphaalkyne into the Ga–Ge bond occurred, resulting a metal‐functionalized (Z)‐phosphaalkenyl complex [LPhGe{C(tBu)=P}–Ga(Cl)LBDI] (2). Complex 2 was characterized by single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis and spectroscopic methods (1H, 13C{1H}, 31P{1H} NMR and IR).

A T-shaped, Open-Shell Cobalto-Germylene Demonstrating Dynamic Covalent Bond Activation

Abstract:Reaction of chelating cationic germylene ligand [PhiPDippGe]+ (1; PhiPDipp = {[Ph2PCH2Si(iPr)2](Dipp)N}; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) with the NHC-stabilised Co0 system [IPr·Co(η2-vtms)2] gives ready access to the first example of an open-shell metallo-germylene in T-shaped Co complex 2, in high yields. Complex 2 is formed through the formal oxidative addition of the germylene to Co, giving a unique route to this compound class. The Co centre in 2 bears a high-spin density of its single unpaired electron, corroborated by SQUID magnetometry, EPR spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calcula-tions. Detailed analysis of the electronic structure of 2 establish the distinct nature of the germanium cobalt interaction as an electron-sharing covalent bond. Still, the formation of 2 is not trivial: shortening reaction times leads to the formation of three different fragments of this species (viz. 3, 4, and 5), which can be isolated and fully characterised; further, these quantitatively recombine over extended reaction times in forming 2. This is borne out by trapping of one additional species, namely cobalto-germylene complex 7, through the addition of a Lewis base to dissolved 2, highlighting the highly dynamic collection of species formed in solution from dissolved 2.

Abstract:We present an efficient photoredox/HAT dual catalyzed arylgermylation of alkenes by using readily available alkene, germyl hydrides and (hetero)aryl nitriles under mild conditions, providing a variety of high functionality germanium-containing molecules with quaternary carbon. Control experiments and DFT calculations supported cooperative photoredox/HAT results in the generations of the germyl radical/(hetero)aryl nitrile radical anion. The in situ formed radicals can undergo sequential addition reactions with alkenes to deliver the selective 1,2-germylarylation of alkene. This protocol exhibits mild reaction conditions, good functional tolerances and broad substrate scope, complementing the observed in the transition metal-catalyzed coupling reactions.

Abstract:The reactivity of an isolable 2‐germapropadiene with acids, ketones, and amines was investigated. The reactions of 2‐germapropagiene 1 with hydrogen chloride and acetic acid afforded the corresponding dichlorogermane (2) and diacetoxygermane (3), respectively, indicating that the central germanium atom of 1 is electrophilic. The reaction of 1 with benzaldehyde proceeds via a formal [2+2] cycloaddition to afford the corresponding spiro compound (4). Moreover, 1 reacts smoothly with acetone to furnish germane 5, which contains a six‐membered ring involving two acetone molecules. Furthermore, 1 undergoes N‐H bond insertion with methylamine or aniline to afford diamino germanes 7 and 8, respectively. The reaction of 1 with urea selectively afforded the corresponding N‐H‐insertion product (8).

Abstract:The new germylene [(PhMe2Si)(2)N](2)Ge has been prepared and fully characterized, and the oxidative addition of [(PhMe2Si)(2)N](2)Ge and [(Me3Si)(2)N](2)Ge with the well-known germylene trapping reagent benzil (1,2-phenylethane-1,2-dione) has been carried out. The crystal structures of the resulting germanium(IV) benzil adducts Ph2C2O2Ge[N(SiMe2Ph)(2)](2) and Ph2C2O2Ge[N(SiMe3)(2)](2) were obtained. The two adducts are essentially isostructural and both exhibit a pseudo-tetrahedral environment at the germanium atom and a nearly planar environment at the nitrogen atoms of the bis(silyl)amido-ligands.

Abstract:Allenes are important 2π building blocks in organic synthesis and engage as 2-carbon components in many metal-catalyzed reactions. Wender and co-workers discovered that methyl substituents on the terminal allene double bond counterintuitively change the reactivities of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs). More sterically encumbered allenes afford higher cycloadduct yields, and such effects are also observed in other Rh(I)-catalyzed intermolecular cycloadditions. Through density functional theory calculations (B3LYP and M06) and experiment, we explored this enigmatic reactivity and selectivity of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with VCPs. The apparent low reactivity of terminally unsubstituted allenes is associated with a competing allene dimerization that irreversibly sequesters rhodium. With terminally substituted allenes, steric repulsion between the terminal substituents significantly increases the barrier of allene dimerization while the barrier of the (5 + 2) cycloaddition is not affected, and thus the cycloaddition prevails. Computation has also revealed the origin of chemoselectivity in (5 + 2) cycloadditions with allene-ynes. Although simple allene and acetylene have similar reaction barriers, intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions of allene-ynes occur exclusively at the terminal allene double bond. The terminal double bond is more reactive due to the enhanced d-π* backdonation. At the same time, insertion of the internal double bond of an allene-yne has a higher barrier as it would break π conjugation. Substituted alkynes are more difficult to insert compared with acetylene, because of the steric repulsion from the additional substituents. This leads to the greater reactivity of the allene double bond relative to the alkynyl group in allene-ynes.

Abstract:1,2-migration is one recurring isomerization reaction in organic chemistry. In contrast, double 1,2-migration remains rare and limited to transition-metal complexes. Herein, we describe the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of mixed heavier Sn=Ge vinylidenes. Double 1,2-carbon migration enables the isomerization of the stannagermenylidene (3) to the germastannenylidene (4). X-ray diffraction analysis and DFT calculations revealed that 3 and 4 feature a Sn=Ge double bond. The reaction of 3 with IMe2 (1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazoline-2-ylidene) results in the electron redistribution in the Sn=Ge core to give the germylone-stannylene adduct (5). Moreover, treatment of 3 with 0.25 equiv. of (AlCp*)4 produces the heteronuclear aluminyl stannagermyne (6).
